To make having a pet hamster more exciting, you may want to train them to do some tricks. Just like dogs, cats, birds, and other animals, hamsters can also be taught to do certain things. Training your hamster is easy if you have patience.
You'll need patience as your hamster must be very relaxed with you for this to succeed. So if you've just recently adopted your hamster, you'll have to wait for it to get used to its new home before you even attempt any training.
On the first day that you bring your hamster home, just put it in the cage and allow it to adjust. Don't go near the cage at all except to feed your hamster.
On day two, go up to the case briefly a few times but don't attempt to hand feed your hamster yet. The day after that, you can feed by hand but provide some distance so it gets used to you.
Each day, gradually move a little closer until your hamster starts to trust that it can take food from your hand without harm. Once you have tamed it, you may then handle your hamster.
Make sure that you attempt training while your hamster is still a baby as they are more easy-going when they're young. The perfect age for training your hamster is between 4 to 7 weeks.
Make sure you name your hamster and say its name when you are talking to it. This helps reinforce its name to your hamster so it knows you're speaking to it.
After you've started the training process, you can offer your hamster treats as a reward for doing what you ask it to do. Use something that it likes to eat, such as sunflower seeds.
A simple way to teach your hamster to stand on its legs is to hold a treat over its head and make it extend upwards for it. Then reward your hamster with the treat to show it that you're thankful for what it did. Once you've done this a few times, your pet will come to know that it should stand when you place a treat above its head.
Make sure your hamster has mastered one trick before moving on to another one so you don't overwhelm it.
Tricks that your hamster can be trained to do include shaking hands, jumping and potty training. Training your hamster to use a certain spot for a potty can be a bit of a challenge but it can be done.
Just remember, having a patient attitude is critical to success. Allow your hamster some time to adjust and encourage it to do each trick until it understand it.
So, just by using some treats and fair amount of patience, you can soon be training your hamster to be lots of fun to be around.
