Typically, your pet's veterinarian or trainer can recommend the best dog collar that you should use for your particular size and breed of dog. However, knowing what different types of dog collars are available on the market today can help you decide on your own what is best for your pooch. There are three popular collars dog owners choose, based on use and functionality.
Buckle collar. This seems to be the most popular variety of collar. It features a ring on a belt to which you can attach dog identification tags. You can also use it to attach a copy of your dog's license or immunization verification. If you don't want to use the traditional metal tags, then a leather tag pouch is also offered for these sorts of collars.
Muzzle collar. These sizable dog collars are a cup-like apparatus or mesh cover that is placed over your dog's mouth and nose and is fastened to its head by means of straps that go behind the ears.
Head collar. The head collar is not unlike the muzzle collar, yet has some notable differences. It keeps your dog's head set in place and does not allow the animal to pull against the force you bring to bear on the neck.
Aside from the previous three styles mentioned, there are the metal choke chain and chain link type of collars. When dealing with large and heavy dogs, the chain type is the best dog collar to use; especially during intense training sessions or while taking your dog for a walk in open and public areas. This is the only pet collar that is sold by the length of chain you need.
Of course, over and above utility, you shouldn't make your dog wear a collar that doesn't fit his personality, size or breed. A choke or spiked dog collar on a toy breed may seem funny and novel, but it is not necessary and can be traumatic for the animal. Something more appropriate to the dog's small size and breed is in order, such as a ribbon collar or something similar. The best dog collar is one that fits your dog well and keeps him safe.
There are many different types of dog collars for you to choose from. You can go with something that is purely ornamental, such as a designer dog collar, or something that actually serves a purpose. Click here to find more information on the best dog collar for your needs.
