Obesity in cats and dogs can cause health problems. The pet owner may not be aware of the health risks associated with obesity. Pet owners may even think that their pets look cuter being overweight and that there is no cause for concern.

The risks of diabetes and arthritis are increased by obesity in cats and dogs. Losing weight can often make these conditions less severe. Obesity should be considered a reason to consult a veterinarian.

Certain medical conditions can cause obesity. The veterinarian may do blood tests or other tests to check for these conditions.

One example of a medical condition that can cause obesity is a thyroid condition. Hyperthyroidism and other metabolic conditions can cause the pet to put on weight and can cause other symptoms as well. If the metabolic condition is treated, it may help with the pets obesity.

Certain pet owner behaviors can contribute to the pets obesity. Free range feeding, where food is left out for the pet at all times, makes it difficult to tell how much food the pet is eating. Therefore, the pet could eat too much and the pet owner may not realize that is what is causing the obesity.

Feeding a pet too many pet treats or table scraps can cause the pet to become overweight. Many times, when a pet owner is giving table scraps to a pet, the pet owner gives foods that are high in fat or carbohydrates. Fat and carbohydrates are problematic for pet weight management.

If a pet does not get enough exercise, it is at risk for obesity. Neglecting to take a dog for a daily walk can contribute to obesity in dogs. Increasing the physical activity of the pet can help reduce the pets body weight and improve the pets health.

The pets food should be low in fat and carbohydrates. The pet owner may want to consult a veterinarian for suggestions on pet food and meal serving sizes.
