Dogs can be considered to be clean animals. They would rather not dirty the area where they eat and sleep. They also have tendencies to eliminate on grass or dirt rather on concrete or gravel. With this natural tendencies of your dog, you can train them rapidly and successful at your home.
To start training your dog, you need to set up a few things in your house. One, you will need to have an established living area for your dog. It can be a bathroom, a part of the kitchen or a garage. You will also need to spend time with your dog in its area. It should also be able to play, eat and sleep in this area. And make sure that you have a special bed placed in his den. It can be an open crate or a large cardboard box. Do not get frustrated if your dog eliminates in its area. It will only do this in the beginning, but once he figure out that this is its own space, it will avoid dirtying the place.
When the time comes that your dog gets comfortable with his own bed, you can now move his bed anywhere you want inside the house. As owner, you can also strap your dog in the house so it will follow you where you want to go. Thus you can recognize his habits.
Another thing you need to set up is a toilet area for your dog. But you have to make sure that this area is easily accessible to your dog. During the first few days or weeks, you will have to accompany your dog while it is eliminating. But it will eventually develop a habit of eliminating in the specified toilet area. Having an established toilet area will make it easier for a regular feeding schedule. Note that a healthy adult dog can control its bladder and bowels for 8 hours, so you will also know when it's time for your dog to eliminate.
It is very important that you won't confine your dog without access to his toilet area. If your dog happens to soil herself, her bed or her den, it may become a habit and it will be hard for you to train him.
One way to speed up the natural house training process is to praise and reward your dog every time he eliminates in his toilet area. It is also important not to shout at your dog for accidents and mistakes. This usually confuses a dog and can slow down house training process.
Too large den can sometimes make your dog eliminate in that area. Try making his den a bit smaller and take your dog more frequently to his toilet area. Also, urinary problems and medical conditions can cause your dog to dirty his bed while he sleeps. And lastly, dogs eliminate frequently if he drinks too much water out of boredom or habit. Try to limit his water and give him activities so that he isn't bored. Remember that if a den is not properly introduce to your dog, he might feel as if he is a prison and will show signs of anxiety, barking, chewing and whining. So, make sure your dog is enjoying his den.
