There are times when you are faced with an emergency and it's necessary for you to take a trip. Pets, unfortunately, aren't very accommodating in times like these. Who will take them in at such short notice? Toting your pets along with your should pose no problem, in fact it's a lot better than leaving them for a few days at some unknown shelter.
Most airlines are not averse to having pets on board. If you're lucky, you can even bring your pet along with you inside the aircraft, provided they're small enough to fit in a cage and can be stowed under the seat. It's actually alright if your pet has to be stowed in the cargo area, you don't have to worry that they'll be uncomfortable because the temperature and pressure in these areas are frequently monitored. Although very few airlines don't allow pets anymore, it would be wise if you could confirm this fact with the airline in case you may have to find another one. If you normally book your tickets online, make it a point to call the airline to confirm arrangements for your pet.
Although it is quite common now for airlines to allow pets on board, there's still a limit to the number they can accommodate. Since an aircraft can carry only a certain number of animals, make sure you reserve a seat for your pet as soon as possible. Don't forget to bring your pet's health certificate when you go to the airport. A health certificate is effective for 10 days and can be procured from your local vet. But for longer trips, you may have to secure another one for your return home.
A kennel or carrier is definitely necessary. Animal carriers or kennels are easily available at any pet shop. Buy a good one with enough room to keep your pet comfortable, the padded walls are an added bonus as well. Not all animal carriers are suitable for air travel, so inquire at the store which one you should buy. The people in the pet store should be able to provide you with the right one.
There's no reason to sedate your pet as well. The long flight would just make your pet sleepy. Prepare your pet for the flight by training it to stay in a crate for a long period of time. But other than that, you don't need to worry about anything! We bid you and your pet "Bon Voyage!
