It doesn't matter if you've found a new pet rabbit, bought one from the store, or one that has escaped and returned, you need to learn more about rabbit pregnancy if you're an owner.
However, you have to know when she is pregnant in order to help her take the proper course. The only way to do it is by understanding all the symptoms that give off tell-tale signs that she's going to have babies. We're going to go over a few of them today, in hopes that one of them may give you a clue in the beginning stages.
You won't have to worry about it for a long time, because rabbits only go through a 35 day pregnancy. Just keep in mind if you believe she's pregnant, and then keep track of the time. If forty days rolls around and there aren't any kits, then you may have to try again if you're breeding.
Once she hits around two to three weeks, you'll start feeling the developing kits. While the first reaction is to touch the belly, you want to refrain from doing it. Even though you may think you're being gentle, the slightest touch could actually injure the kits or even kill them. The babies are so small at this time you could actually lay one on the end of your finger.
One of the most obvious signs that your rabbit is pregnant is that she will start nesting. She will find a small, closed off area of her cage and she will start to line it with very soft materials. Be aware that she will most likely start to pull out fur from her own body to create the lining that she likes. Of course, this behavior is not always certain. Some does will do this regardless of whether they are pregnant or not; when they do, this is called false pregnancy. You may want to find soft materials for her to use.
Also remember that your rabbit's mood can tell you a lot. If your doe has always been docile and amicable and she suddenly turns aggressive or aloof, it can be a sign that she is going to have babies. Pregnant does are frequently agitated and easily annoyed and she might be resistant to touching or petting. Also watch for does that might be scratching or chewing more often than she was before. This can make a lot of difference when you are curious to see if she is pregnant. Take some time and make sure that you watch her closely.
The only way to tell for sure if your rabbit is pregnant is to go to a veterinarian and to get some x-rays. This will safely allow you to figure out whether or not she has kits and you will find that this can be very helpful when you are looking to know for sure.
Make sure that you are aware of the signs that your rabbit might be pregnant; it can be very important for her health that you are aware of this fact!
