Since you cannot foresee when your puppy needs to use the bathroom, what can you do to avoid your dog habitually using the bathroom in the house? Potty training your dog is one of the first and most important in training your puppy. The lesson should be taught as soon as the puppy arrives at its new home.

A puppy can be toilet trained when it is 6-8 weeks old. You need to be very patient, as the dog may take several weeks.

Puppy's have a certain behavior when they want to use the bathroom, it is important to pay attention to this behavior. Recognizing this behavior will let you know when to command them and eventually reward them when it is doing what you want it to do.

Some signs that your puppy need to go is that it will move around in circles, squatting often. At this point you need to tell it to "go" in a firm voice. Over time, the puppy will associate the need to excrete/urinate with going out, and will ask to be let out on its own.

Puppies can't hold it very long and you may have to do this several times a day as. Also, be careful not to scream or shout at the puppy because it may cause unhealthy confusion and delay or impair the training.

To make the training effective, take the puppy out often, before it has to actually do the job. Once outside encourage your puppy to try to do its potty or urinate. Use the same words and gestures each time. Eventually it will start associating the words and gestures correctly and start responding.

Each time the puppy does as it is told, shower it with praise and petting. This will reinforce the good behavior.

Potty training is most effective if the puppy is taken out each and every time. Using a crate or a litter box indoors is not a good idea as it not hygienic, and the dog will not feel the need to go out.
