You know that you have found a good litter mat when your cat actually uses it, because if he does not.. then what is the point?

You have seen it before, again and again; your little feline is a big time digger. In fact, he seems to think he can make it to the other side of the globe. Where is he trying to go?

The litter eventually gets tracked all over you floor and carpet and who else knows where... and it is even worse with the fine types of litter.

Since you like to try and keep the house clean and tidy you get out the old mop, broom or vacuum to clean up his scattered litter, only to find he has dug out some more litter after a few hours.

Our feline friends just naturally dig and cover up their excrement... some with more zeal than others.

The easiest way to solve this headache is to buy a cat litter mat. No.. not just any cheap, ugly thing you can find.. but one that he will put to use.

Their are plenty of fancy mats out there. What you need to concern yourself with is texture. Their are mainly 2 types. Textured (projections or bumps) and non-textured (soft).

The non textured is like a regular rug that you might even walk on barefooted. You need to be wary of the type with texture on it.

There are some felines, that will not like stepping on those mats with texture.

If it feels funny to you then guess what? Your picky cat will have none of that!

A cats little paw pads are very sensitive to touch ( a lot like the soles of your bare feet) and quite a few may outright refuse to step on the mat upon exiting their litter box. Many might even go through the trouble of jumping their way out of the litter box to avoid stepping on the mat which will then scatter more litter around your home.

This is pretty aggravating.

This is not what you envisioned when you purchased the mat.. now is it? Lucky for you, not all cats are this finicky. Let us hope for your sake your cat will not care about the texture.

However, if you discover that you still have litter spread all over your house then check your litter mat. It may just be the type he does not like.

Give one of the softer mats a try (non textured). If you can imagine walking over it barefoot then chances are your cat will use it as well.
