The Awaited Moment of Alpaca Breeding

Add comments

This is the most awaited part of Alpaca Breeding. The reward you have been waiting for is here, the birth of a cria!

At the start of this process, ensure accurate records are kept. The date of conception is important to note as the gestation period can predict a probable birth date. The gestation generally lasts 11.5 months, but some females can give birth two weeks prior to their expected delivery date.

It is vital a watchful eye is kept on the female using a maternity paddock. A relaxed and calm elder alpaca may be placed in the same vicinity as the female pregnant alpaca. Since alpacas require company, it is important to acquire company from other members of the alpaca family, while keeping an eye on the behavior of the alpaca.

Prepare a birthing kit that can be located easily in the barn. Things that should be in your birthing kit are as follows:

- Paper towels and towels - This can be used if there is a need to dry off a cria, clean your hands or any other cleaning up that needs to be done.

- Rubber gloves - The rubber gloves ensure a clean and helpful entity during the cria's birth.

- Betadine or Iodine - Iodine and betadine ensure a clean and safe birth upon lubrication to the navel.

- Sling scale - The birth weight of the cira will be measured using a scale. In any birthing and breeding endeavor, keeping track of the weight is vital.

- Feeding bottles and milk refills - Many cira's require milk on hand in the event the mother is unable to produce sufficient milk products.

Before birth, call your local veterinarian to stay on standby. Alpacas are known to have fairly safe births, however, the occasional complication is common. At the start of the birth, clear signs of labor will become obvious. The dam will appear clenched, and may begin to kick around the paddock. A drop of a jelly-type liquid may be seen clear on the female's vulva. The mammary glands will also feel and look swollen. Signs can be seen up to two weeks before birth.

Alpacas followed evolutionary patterns, which play a large role in the time of birth. Typically, a female will give birth between 10 o'clock and 3'clock in the early afternoon. It is believed this is due to the cold temperatures once experienced atop the mountains where their origin began. As birth draws near, the fluid-like substances flowing from the vulva will increase. The mother and other alpacas may sniff her rear area. The mother will be unable to relive herself as the dung pile becomes more frequent. Her appetite will decrease to the point of no food consumption, as she grows restless.

The female is now going to experience labor, which lasts between 1 and 6 hours in a typical cria birth. The average birth occurs in the span of 2 hours. Keep in mind notes should be taken during this time, so that patterns can be traced in the event you decide to breed again. The female may exhibit the same birthing traits in her next birth.

Routinely, the front toes and nose will appear first. The dam will break, lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Your assistance to deliver the cira is not yet needed in this procedure. The cria needs ample time for the fluids to leave the airway. If the rear end of the cria delivers first, the veterinarian needs to immediately be called. Additionally, if the cria is not in the proper position, troubles with breathing may occur, along with umbilical issues. When the female alpaca ceases pushing, it is your job to begin assisting her. Pull downwards (NOT straight out) and steadily on the cria, while remembering to time her contractions. After the cria successfully moves out of the dam, the placenta will break naturally within an hour of birth. The entire placenta needs to be freed from the mother.

The dam does not and will not need cleaning through licking, unlike other animals. If applicable, you may lightly dry the cria using the towels provided in your birthing kit, but be weary of the naval area as this can be easily damaged. To avoid infections, apply betadine to the navel area. Note: make sure to record the cria's birth weight. At this time, allow for bonding time between the mother and the newborn.

The waxy plus, located below the dam's teats, can be removed if allowed by the mother. The newborn will engage in its first drink of milk at this time, as it is important to the survival of the cria. The first taste of milk is rich in colostrum.
