There is one thing that you will need to realize before we move onto the important parts of potty training puppies. This is that a puppy or dog does not use a potty or a toilet to do its business. So, they will opt to take their business outside.

The first thing you have to note is that there are many different types of dogs. The process will go a lot smoother if you realize early that some dogs learn quicker than others. When it comes to potty training this is no different. If you have a choice of the dog you get, make sure to do a bit of research. This is so that you can know the dog you get and if you can handle the dog before you get it.

There is one very important thing you want to keep in mind before you get started with the training process. You should not get upset with your dog. They are a bit like children, in that they always want to play, eat and get a lot of attention. So, if he does not get it right the first time around, be calm and try again later.

Step one - The first and most important part of the potty training puppies process, is that you should have a good schedule. You do not want your puppy to get confused with what you are doing. Dogs are good time keepers, just like babies. If you wake a dog at a certain time every morning to do its business, it will start to wake up on time every morning.

There is nothing better than getting a new puppy. But with that comes the task of training. And when done properly you will have a well behaved dog that you can be proud of. There are many techniques of dog training and the one we will discuss first is Recall Training.

Recall means that the dog responds when called. If your pet is going to come when called you have to make sure they are paying attention. To begin with you have to make sure that the dog "checks in" with you periodically and to pay attention when you ask for it.

Reward plays a big part in this type of training, reward every time they pay attention. Every time your pet stops what it's doing and comes over to reward them with a treat.

When outside reward him when he comes up to say hello. And reward him when he responds to his name. Repeat his name several times before you feed him in his dog dish or give him a new toy to play with. If you say his name and he looks at you give him a treat. One of the hardest places to train is outside where there are a lot of distractions. When your pet is outside there are a lot of other things to be interested in other than you. When you call your pet and he comes reward him. Make it enticing to come when called, have him check in with you often even if you haven't said a word. This will reinforce the habit that coming translates to mean good things will happen every time.

Make sure you choose the right treat to use for training. You could use little pieces of cheese, chunks of hot dog or sausage. You want the dog to think that you are the best choice when they have many things to choose from. That you are the better choice over everything else that is going on outside. If your pet is the type that likes to play fetch you might reward him with a game of fetch for coming when called. Know your dog and understand what is the most rewarding thing you can offer. Make the experience a positive one.

House training is another thing you want to get a handle on right away. If you allow bad habits to develop they will be very hard to break later on. Untrained dogs should never be let to roam around the house, you should employ the crate training method and contain them when you are not in control. Don't put much in the crate except for newspaper, a water bowl, a bed and a toy.

When you have established an area of your house to keep him in spend a lot of time with him there and keep all of his things in this one area. After your dog gets used to this area you can move him around to other areas. By moving his bed he will get the idea. Puppies chew as a way to explore and relate to the world around them. The activity is instinctive to them. Unfortunately, if chewing behavior is focused in the wrong direction, it can result in damaged clothes, shoes, and furniture.

It's important to realize that adult dogs also chew, but do so for a variety of reasons that extend further than mere exploration. For example, your pooch might feel separation anxiety if you leave him alone for long periods. Or, he might be bored. This happens often when canines lack an outlet through which to expend their pent-up energy. Your pooch may also chew on your belongings as a way to get your attention.

Whatever the reasons for the destructive behavior, you can control the problem. Below, we'll provide a few tips for training your dog to avoid chewing on your possessions.

Use A Crate

Crating your puppy is an ideal strategy for confining him when you're unable to watch him. Not only will he come to see his crate as his personal space, but you'll prevent him from ruining your furniture and clothes when you're not home. If you plan to keep him crated, be sure to give him a few toys with which he can entertain himself.

Provide Chew Toys

The goal is not to eliminate your pooch's penchant for chewing; again, that's his way of relating to the world around him. Instead, redirect the behavior toward objects that are acceptable for him to chew.

Offer A Swap

Teaching you new puppy not to bite is one of the most important first steps you will need to take. This behaviour if not stopped can become an act of aggression in your adult dog, possibly leading to a situation where he would seriously injure a child, even if unintentionally.

Be Consistent

It is important that everyone trains the puppy in the same way. Teach your children to treat your puppy exactly as you do. Biting is a natural act in a puppy. It is natural for them to bite their litter mates as an act of playing and so they will want to do exactly the same with you or you children.

Act Just Like A Puppy

Becoming abusive with your puppy will do nothing but have an adverse effect in the relationship as time goes on between you and your pet.

Imagine a new born baby. Will it make a difference if you smack it when it cries and screams? Of course not! Like babies, puppies just do not get it and applying this type of punishment will only cause your pet to stay away from you whenever possible.

The psychology behind this is that dog when young, do not make the distinction between the pain it receives when you hit it, and the reason that you are having it punished. If it was biting on your shoe and you gave it a smack, all you did was to instill terror and distress into the poor puppy, without it knowing what it had done wrong. I don't know anything about you but I'm sure you've had days when you just want to get away and spend some quiet time alone relaxing. You hear crate training a puppy and you think it is a cruel and inhumane treatment of dogs. Not really. This is actually a useful dog training method many experts employ. Canines do not sleep in an area which they have previously eliminated on so a crate trained puppy will restrain from soiling himself until he is released from his crate. Make sure the enclosure is small enough. After an hour or two inside the crate, take him out for toilet activities.

This crate should be placed inside your bedroom or living room. Never forcefully push the puppy inside this place, he should enter willingly. Put in interesting dog toys and some favorite treats. Begin to feed him inside the crate. Remember the secret is to make this place as pleasant as possible. This should be his haven from all the busyness of a dogs life so do not take him here as punishment for wrong behavior.

Now the puppy is already accustomed to being inside the crate, close the enclosure for a few minutes at a time. Make sure he hears you and knows you are still in the room. If he gets upset for no pressing reason, do not let him out until he quiets down. If you do, he will use crying to get what he wants in the future.

If all goes well, the puppy will now be accustomed to a closed crate and is probably not noticing you as much anymore. Begin to go out of the room for longer periods of time. With the puppy toys distracting him, he is now at ease and even enjoying this time of play and quiet time. Keep in mind your puppy's physical limitations and do not leave him alone for more than four hours at a time without going potty.

These are few puppy training tips that when followed, will do so much to increase your leisure time significantly. Crate training aids potty and sleeping habits without much hard work. Sounds good right? You also have the freedom to take longer trips and vacations without undue stress of worrying about your puppy. For times you need space you can leave him be. The dog will be happy in his own world and you in yours. When you are successful in crate training a puppy-- your former lifestyle will be as forgotten as a buried bone.

Besides food, water, exercise, and plenty of love and attention, your dog will rely upon you to manage his health. Your pooch is not like a person, even though he occasionally seems so. He is susceptible to a number of ailments, including worms and parasites. If these little bugs are allowed to fester inside your canine's body, they can cause severe health problems.

Below, we'll explain how the issue starts and why parasitic infections are so problematic, especially for puppies. You'll also learn to recognize symptoms that suggest your puppy has a few stowaways inside his body. Lastly, we'll describe how the condition is treated.

How The Infection Begins

Many owners would be surprised to know their puppies are likely to already have parasites and worms when they adopt them. Most pups will experience them at some point during their young lives. The mother is often the root cause.

If your dog has developed a parasitic infection, he may begin to lose weight. It's common for canines who are suffering from parasites and worms to lose their appetite and experience diarrhea. If the infection is serious, your dog may start to tire easily and display low energy levels. The quality of his coat might also decline and he'll likely develop a pot belly.

How The Problem Is Resolved

Treating a parasitic infection involves several stages of deworming. The reason is because the medication that is used is only effective on adult parasites. Your puppy may ingest eggs and larvae, but the medication will not be effective on them until they mature. That can take months.

Experts recommend deworming be performed every two weeks for the first two months of your puppy's life. Then, your dog should be dewormed again at three months. If the infestation is serious, plan to deworm him once a month for three additional months. It's also important to clean any area in your home that your pup frequents. Otherwise, he may become infected again after having been dewormed.

It's worth underscoring that your puppy will likely endure one or more health issues at some point before he reaches adulthood. Plan for it. Training dogs has many methods and one of these methods is called Dog Clicker Training. It is used to train dogs, but was first introduced to train dolphins. It allowed the use of a clicker or a clicking sound to communicate to the dolphins as they swam under the water. The clicker method was found to be useful for other animals as well, including puppies, fish, elephants and other animals.

The clicker used to teach the dog is small and usually metal. It produces a quick, loud sound that delivers a message to the dog that the behavior is good and acceptable. It is a gentle method in training a dog or puppy and does not hurt the dog or injure its hearing in any way.

With the sound of the click the dog instantly knows what behavior was commendable and will associate the click with the good behavior. When a treat is given without the click a puppy or dog can get confused as the treat is given when the dog has already changed behaviors. If the click is given immediately and then a small treat, this will help the dog know immediately what exactly he was doing to deserve the click, and then the treat.

At first, the trainer or owner will start clicker training by rewarding the dog with a click and a small treat for behavior that it is already doing. For example, if the dog is on a leash, and needing to walk slowly beside the owner, a quick click and treat will teach the dog that this behavior is good. If the dog starts to run ahead, or starts to chase a squirrel, the dog is not going to receive a click and a treat until the behavior is calm and walking next to the owner again.

Similarly, if the dog jumps up on the couch or people he would be held back from the clicker sound and the treat. If the dog calms down and waits to see what the trainer is going to do, he would be given a quick click as the calmness is rewarded with the click and treat.

Once the dog learns to wait for the positive reinforcement of the clicker, he will learn at a quicker rate than just with voice commands or treats. Dog clicker training, voice commands with body language can all be used together to help the dog learn at a faster rate.

These methods of using dog clickers help teach the dog good behavior and to reject bad behavior. Chewing and barking are among the negative behavior clicker training can deter. Good habits and happy dogs are not just the responsibility of the dog, but the owner has a responsibility to teach their dog just as one would feel the responsibility to teach their children to be positive members of the community. The dog will grow up happier and healthier too.

There are a lot of misconceptions concerning crate training. Many mistakenly believe that it is negligent and even cruel and that you are in essence locking your pet up in a cage. It is in reality a safe, humane, and effective way to train your dog.

Far from being "locked up in a cage," crates provide a needed sense of safety for dogs. And they are multi-purpose. From helping with house training to quelling separation anxiety, crate training is one of the most effective training methods available.

Dogs have lived in small dens for centuries. Having a "den" of his own will help your dog feel safe and secure. Everyone likes a place of their own - especially dogs.

Crate training allows your dog to develop a sense of security, even when you are not there. Instead of coming home to find evidence of his anxiety on your chewed up shoes, you can find a dog who is happy and well-adjusted. Don't worry; he'll still be happy to see you!

As your dog begins to feel more comfortable with your home and with you being away, you may feel confident in leaving the dog out while you're gone. Some dogs, though, actually prefer the crate.

If you introduce your dog to his crate for short periods, it will be tremendously helpful in house training. They learn to wait until they are let outside in order to relieve themselves. Until they perfect this, however, limit the time spent in the crate.

Puppies want to please you, but their bodies may not be developed enough yet. When you keep your puppy in his crate at night and for periods during the day, ample exercise will help with house training. They need enough time and opportunities to relieve themselves. They also need to stretch their legs and expend some energy.

A dog crate can be a great tool in training your pet - just never use it for punishment. It can really help your dog feel secure and safe while you're away.

So how do you get started with crate training?

First, choose a good crate. They can be plastic or metal and should be only large enough for your dog to turn around in. If it is too big, then the dog will have enough room to eliminate and then return to his sleeping area.

If a dog has more space than that, he can create a separate area for going "to the bathroom." If he has room only for sleeping, the puppy house training process will be much more effective.

Now, you have to acclimate your pet to his new crate. If you keep it in the living room or kitchen, he can feel free to explore it while not isolating himself from you and your family. Keep the door open so he can come and go. Don't force him in at this point.

Once he has had a chance to explore a little, urge him to go inside. You can guide him in with a treat or a toy. Food is a good way to get him in because it allows him to form positive associations with the crate.

Allow him to explore and get used to the crate. Then, you can guide him in and close the door. He may whine to be let out, but have him stay in for a few minutes. He needs to get used to it; you are not abusing him, you are teaching him. Babies fuss when they are put into cribs - this is the same type of situation. They will adapt very quickly.

They will whimper because they want to be picked up. If you let your dog out, he'll continue that behavior. Stand firm and have him stay in there. Don't let him out until he stops whining. Start with short periods and let him out to play or walk.

At first, if your dog continues whining, you will have to encourage him to get in with a treat. When he is in, sit by the crate for a few minutes. Then go into another room for ten or so minutes.

Stay in the next room for about ten minutes, and then come back and resume your position near the crate. Increase the time you are in the next room until your dog is comfortable with about thirty minutes. At this milestone, you can begin leaving him in his crate while you are not home.

Your dog should adapt relatively quickly. Most really like the comfort of the crate. Your dog may take to it right away or may need a little extra training. Be prepared to spend some time working at it because it really will help with his overall training.

After inviting Grandmother to the house, she enters. Your dog joyfully bounds up on her, causing her to lose her balance and crack her head on the wall. Careful there, Grandma!

Your dog is so keen to see you and be with you when you get home, she jumps up on you. The main reason that dogs jump on people is simply that they're excited to see you. If you want to break your dog of this habit (and you should) don't give her any attention when she does this.

Many dogs have an aggressive side, and you often see this when they are on leashes. Dogs that are normally well-behaved can lunge and snarl at other dogs and people as you walk down the street. While he needs exercise, you do not want to put others at risk. What can you do about leash aggression?

However, there are some ways to deal with leash aggression so you can both get some good quality time and exercise outdoors.

If your dog seems like he is about to become aggressive, divert him with a command like sit or down. This will keep him occupied and should reroute his attention.

If you are about to pass another dog, don?t tense up or pull the least taut. Your pet will be able to tell and he will think that you are scared, so aggression is much more likely. Animals pick up on our signals ? just remain calm and relaxed.

Some dogs may require a gentle leader harness or muzzle. These should only be used temporarily until your dog learns not to lunge. If you have a dog who is a danger, they can keep others safe. This is the first priority.

If you have tried to curb leash aggression and your dog still misbehaves during walks, it is time to find a good trainer. You need professional help to stop this at once: not only is it disruptive to your own walks, it is dangerous to everyone and every animal you pass on the sidewalk.

Many dogs pull and lunge when on a leash. If your dog displays this very natural reaction to being on a leash, it is vital that you take action as soon as possible so it doesn't become either an irritating habit or a dangerous one.

The stay command is one of the most useful for your dog. While indicative of a well-trained dog, the stay command can also keep your dog safe in different settings. To help facilitate teaching this command, use treats and praise liberally.

To learn to stay, your dog first needs to know how to sit and/or lie down. When he masters this, staying is the next step. Begin by telling him to sit or lie down. As he does this, put your hand out and say, "Stay." Make sure you use a firm yet calm voice.

Your dog may only be able to stay for a second or two at first. No matter how long he stays, remember to praise him and give him a treat. He will be able to stay longer as he practices.

Give the release command ? say "Ok," or "Come" - so your dog knows he doesn't have to lie down any longer. Give him a treat and lots of praise.

As you work with your dog, you can lengthen the time your dog stays. Demand a little more each time before you give him his treat.

At the same time, make sure you're not extending your training sessions too long. Five minutes is enough to get great results.

Another way that dogs are like children is that they have short attention spans! If you require him to train for longer than ten minutes, he is likely to become obstinate and disobedient. Also keep in mind that he'll have to have a lot of practice in order to perfect the command. Repeat "Stay" several times and be prepared to reteach him the command a few times.

As you continue training, your dog will be able to stay longer, even when you are not in the room. You will not always have to provide a treat, but do always praise your dog and his accomplishments.

Bark! Bark!! BARK!!!

The dog barked the neighbor boy right off of his bicycle last week, and they complained. Other people have complained about his barking, and it's getting hard to sleep through the night without getting woken at least once by his barking fits. GRRR! WOOF!!

Can't anything be done?

Some problem behaviors are more straightforward to deal with than others. Learning how to deal with your dog's excessive barking problem can seem difficult on several levels. It's absolutely possible to correct and deal with this type of behavior, but you have to take a few things into account. There are a lot of reasons that dogs bark, and you can't stop them from ever barking. You wouldn't want to stop your dog from barking when it's appropriate.It's important to be aware of the possible causes of excessive barking so that you can approach and correct it in the right way. There are 3 or 4 reasons that dogs will bark.

BOREDOM

Dogs that don't get enough mental or physical stimulation will sometimes bark. She gets bored, and starts to bark. Try to give her the attention and exercise that she needs. But when she does bark from boredom, don't give her attention. Positive or negative attention could well reinforce her idea that barking is the way to get her boredom ended.

TYPE OF BREED

Certain dog breeds bark more than average. Because of the job that they were bred to do, many herding dogs and hounds are like this. In spite of this, you can train her to bark a great deal less, almost a normal amount.

SEPARATION

Dogs are pack animals. Your dog may bark too much when you leave him home alone because he's separated from his pack and doesn't know how else to find you again. This can be one of the most difficult excessive barking problems to address, but it can be done when you know what is causing the problem.

There is one major pitfall to avoid. When you arrive home and he's barking, don't give him positive or negative attention. If you do, he may think that it was his barking that caused you to come back. If he's barking when you get home, ignore him, no eye contact, and turn your back. As soon as he stops barking, pet him and praise him to show him that he can get attention by NOT barking.

STRANGERS

Anytime a stranger comes near the house, dogs usually perceive them as being an intruder to the pack. It's tricky to eliminate this because strangers generally unwittingly reward barking behavior. The mailman comes, makes intruder type noises with the mail slot, the dog barks, the mailman retreats. Good Boy!

These are just a few of the reasons that dogs may bark excessively. It is an annoying problem, but it's good to keep in mind that there are times when you'll want your dog to bark. Barking can be a healthy way for your dog to express himself. He just needs to know when it's appropriate, and when it's not.

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing they all have in common is the love of digging. From burying bones to making cool dens for shelter, dogs in yards will inevitably turn to this favorite past time.

While it is a natural instinct in dogs, digging can be detrimental to your yard and to your dog's discipline. How can you get your living breathing shovel to stop?

As with children, dogs do things for a reason. Why is your dog digging? If you can figure this out, you are halfway to a solution. Does he just love to fling dirt?

Some dogs do enjoy the act of digging, but others use it to communicate with you. They may be crying out for attention or more exercise. They may need a shelter to stay warm or cool. They may be burying food. If you've recently put down fertilizer or dug in your garden, your dog may be responding to the scents.

Knowing the reason behind the digging can help you stop the behavior. For instance, if it is due to boredom or lack of attention, you can start to offer your dog more play time with you.

If this doesn't help, you can give one of the following techniques a try:

1. Bury inflated balloons in places where your dog likes to dig. One popped balloon can be a great deterrent.

2. When you refill the holes, add in some of your dog's own feces. The next time he digs there, he will be repelled by it. This may not be a fun way for you to teach your dog, but it is effective and humane.

3. Chicken wire is another thing you can bury in your yard to deter your dog from digging. He'll hate the feeling of his claws against the wire and will be prompted to stop.

4. When you catch your dog digging, give him a spray from a water bottle or hose. They hate this (but it is not harmful). They will learn to associate the punishment with the crime. Only do this when you catch him digging or he will not connect the behavior with the consequence.

Digging doesn't have to be a part of your dog's normal routine. With a little work and training, you can get past this behavior and have a hole-free yard

Clicker Training for Great Dog Behavior

The use of clickers in dog training has increased in recent years. It is a gentle way to condition your dog to repeat good behavior.

Clicker training works on the principle of operant conditioning. This is when a behavior is repeated because a reward is associated with it. Here is some more on how clicker training works:

A clicker is a small plastic box with a metal strip. When you push and release the metal strip, it makes a sharp clicking sound.

When you first start click training, you pair the click with a reward, such as a dog biscuit. When the dog performs a command well, you click immediately and offer the treat.

This teaches your dog to connect the behavior with the click. Since the click is associated with the treat, he'll be more apt to perform the good behavior. Eventually, you can phase out the treat, and he will respond to the click. After successful training, you won't need the clicker either.

Clicking is immediate. Dogs need to know exactly what they are being praised for, and the clicking sound helps let them know. This is why the clicker method is so effective for training.

Trying the clicker method can lead to more effective, quicker training. It works with your dog?s natural urge to please you and earn a reward.

Puppy Instruction: Housebreaking is a matter of you keeping track of your dog around the house and looking for hints they may need to go out and potty.

Puppy Training: HELP!! My Puppy is BITING EVERYTHING!!

-This is actually extremely simple to fix. Go to your local pet supply store or walmart, kmart, or wherever and buy your puppy a chew toy. A chew toy that makes some type of noise when bitten is best for puppy training.

-The best way to let your puppy know that they are not supposed to chew on anything except their new toy would be to either, catch them in the act, firmly tell them "no", and give them their toy to chew on. The other way to train your puppy would be to sit with them in the floor and put something in front of them that they have been caught previously chewing on, along with their new toy. When they begin to chew on the item they were previously chewing on, firmly tell them "no", take that item away, and give them the toy. Repeat this process several times and you will almost immediately begin to see results. Eventually, they won't even think about chewing on anything but their toy.

Crate training your puppy can be very beneficial to you and your puppy. Many people mistake the crate as being a place to punish the puppy, when actually this is the safest spot for the puppy to go once the puppy gets used to it.

Most puppies love to spend time in crates, but you should not let the puppy spend countless hours in the crate as he will also need to get out around the house to play and go outside to potty. The crate is the place for the puppy when he is confused or scared.

As you are teaching your puppy to get used to his crate, you have to make sure that you do not let him out if he is barking or going crazy. Wait until the puppy calms down before you let him out. Before you know it your puppy will greatly appreciate the crate.

So if you are planning on buying or getting a puppy, you should have already invested in a crate. No dog owner likes to manage a dog that has a biting problem. Many breeds of dogs, big and small, Pitt Bulls and Rottweiler most prominent among them, have reportedly attacked children or other dogs, or chased a delivery boy who had to walk into the house. Though the reported cases may be extreme ones, getting bitten by a dog is not something unheard of. The onus is upon the dog owner to take sufficient preventive measures to forestall the problem before the dog actually bites someone.

This training program should be ideally undertaken when the dog is very young, by letting it mix with those other dogs which have impeccable behavior credentials. These dogs will help you in training your dog against developing a biting habit, because they correct it in their natural way. Even though biting comes naturally to dogs, if you would like to own a pooch that does not easily bite people, it has to be trained sufficiently early to understand that biting is taboo.

Since puppies remain with their biological family only for their first two months, the onus is upon the dog owner to play the mothers role in a dogs life. A pups main behavior training period is the four months from its birth, and that is why rescue dogs as well as dogs which are products of puppy mills are more likely to bite than those that are cared by breeders who are conscientious and reliable.

Puppy mills are often horrific places where dogs are kept in cramped overpopulated pens, by owners who could care less about their mental well being so long as the puppies fetch them a profit. Pups which come from such conditions are basically wild with major emotional, mental, behavioral, and sometimes health issues. These dogs have never been exposed to proper etiquette and simply dont know any better.

Even those, who own a rescue dog that easily bites others, can train the dog to give up its biting habit. It is definitely easier to train a young dog, but that does not mean that it is not possible to train an adult dog to be rid of its tendency to bite.

The method of training a big dog is not all that different from training a young one, the only requirement being that it should be done a little mildly. If a grown dog has biting tendencies, it cannot be left unleashed among other dogs, hoping that it would get trained the natural way, taking the cue from the other dogs; nor can it be allowed to roam free in a playground if it has a tendency to bite children. That will just be sticking your neck out to be caught in a lawsuit.

Do the training in increments, walk the dog on the outskirts of the park until it gets used to the idea of other dogs being nearby, and gradually bring it closer and closer. Patience and dedication are the key ingredients to solving a dog biting problem.

Asking your pet not to be able to go out to relieve himself for eight to ten hour stretches is a lot to ask. If you're a pet owner and work outside the home I'm sure you already understand this. This only creates stress for both pet and owner.

If you own a dog and you love him very much, you may want to take some time to strengthen the relationship between you two. Playing is a great way of doing this. Especially playing fetch.

There are dogs that play fetch without having to go through training. Other dogs don't understand it when you're waving a ball around in their face. For this last group of dogs, a small investment of time and energy is required. Below, I describe three steps of training your dog to play fetch with you.

1. Your dog needs to pay attention to a ball that you want him to fetch. After all, if he's not paying attention, he'll never chase after it. In order to teach your doggy to become interested in a ball, praise him whenever he sniffs it or pays attention to it in any way. The objective is to teach your dog he will get a reward every time he follows the ball.

2. After your doggy learns paying attention to the ball, he needs to learn to pick it up. Should your doggy pick up the ball all by himself, simply continue petting and praising him. If your doggy doesn't pick up the ball by himself, smear some peanut butter or meat paste on there. Then, every time he picks up the ball, continue praising him and give him a dog treat.

3. After your dog knows how to follow a ball and pick it up, it's time that he learns he needs to take it back to you and drop it. You can do this by throwing the ball ten feet away until your dog follows it and then picks it up. Now you call him and show him a dog treat in your hand. This will make him run back to you with the ball still in his mouth. He will probably drop the ball in order to make place for the dog treat.

Once you have gone through this simple process a few times, you can do some tests to see if your doggy has gotten it. Toss the ball a short distance away and order your dog to fetch it. Keep increasing the distance with every time you toss the ball away. Once he gets it right, praise him and give him a dog treat.

If you stick to these simple training steps, your doggy should learn to play fetch in a matter of days or weeks. In time, your doggy will likely gain a better understanding of what playing fetch is all about. The game then becomes its own reward and you won't have to stock up on dog treats anymore.

Puppyhood is the "formative" period for your dog. What you teach him during this time will most likely stick with him the rest of his life. One of the most important things you will be teaching him is where to potty.

We need to realize that puppies are like children in that they are needy for attention and require a routine. The best thing you can do to ease the potty-training process for your pup is to make sure that you establish the "sleep-eat-potty" routine.

There of course will be times when accidents happen-which is completely normal. There will be times when we don't always hear our pup's whimper in our sleep or are unable to let him outside at the exact moment when he needs to go. It could really help out to have a newspaper pallet on the floor. If your pup begins to potty inside, run him over to the newspaper. This is a good alternative option to use until your pup develops better bladder control.

The sooner you get to know your puppy's "eat/potty" routine, the easier potty-training will become. A good rule to go by is to estimate that your pup will be ready for a trip outside around 15 - 20 minutes after he has been fed/watered. If you can, try to have your puppy outside at this time so he will familiarize himself with the proper "potty surroundings."

It's a good idea to separate play time from potty time very early on. If you've taken him out to potty and he goes, take him straight back indoors, wait a bit, and then take him out to play. Allowing him to potty and play in the same time period can send mixed signals as to what he's supposed to do. You wouldn't want him waking you up for play time in the wee hours of the morning!

Now would be a great time to teach your puppy the praise and discipline phrases you intend to use throughout training. Many people use terms such as "good boy/girl" and "no." Just remember that while puppies require a firm hand and patience, this is also a time to enjoy your puppy while he's young and full of energy!

Many of us love the idea of a cheerful, playful puppy, but reality often checks in when we're cleaning up puppy mess. While potty training difficulty differs between dog breeds, there are a few tips that can often be applied to potty training any dog breed.

We need to realize that puppies are like children in that they are needy for attention and require a routine. The best thing you can do to ease the potty-training process for your pup is to make sure that you establish the "sleep-eat-potty" routine.

Although some people are adverse to the idea, others find that keeping a pallet of newspaper near an exit (one your puppy will soon associate with the outdoors). Not everybody agrees on the benefits of crate training.

With crate training the dog is put in a cage, usually made out of plastic or metal that?s about the size of your dog, for shorter periods of time over the day.

Advocates of crate training think that the crate will offer the dog a little home for himself where he can rest and feel at ease. This little room for him makes him feel save. He?ll have a blanket for a familiar smell and comfort and his toys for entertainment.

Supporters of crate training will tell you that it is much easier to potty train your puppy. As dogs don?t like to soil their nest they will wait until they?re set lose before doing a pee or a pooh.

On the other hand, opponents argue that locking your dog into a cage with just enough space to turn around undermines his nature to explore. The dog can?t wander around and isn?t stimulated by new experiences.

People against the use of crates argue that puppies do play in their own waste as can sometimes be seen in pet shop windows. Locking the dog away, they say, is more for the convenience of the owner than for the well-being of the dog.

As always there is something to say for both points of view. There are not many scientific studies done on this subject and opinions differ evenly. Provided you don?t let your puppy to long in the crate and you walk him regularly, crate training probably is a good way to train your dog.

Even proponents recognize that excessive time in a crate is bad for the dog. Any dog locked up in a small space is not getting the exercise he needs and may be restrained from evacuating for longer than is healthy. So I recommend to keep the crate time to no more than two hours maximum.

Opponents worry that dogs in their crate can harm themselves when they make attempts to open the crate to escape, or because they?re bored. Always use a safe crate, one that?s designed especially for dogs. The crate should be sturdy enough, so it can resist your dogs? attempts to get out. And above all make sure the crate can?t fall over.

People in favor of crate training say that a crate trained dog is much easier to travel with. They?re used to the crate, that is also used for car, train and air travel. They are comfortable in their crate, above all if they have some of their own toys with them.

On the other hand critics state that it?s better to leave your dog at home and ask someone else to take care of him when you?re traveling. Apart from their walks and other short trips, dogs feel best when they are on familiar territory.

But after all you should decide. You might want to give crate training a try and see for yourself. You?ll be the judge and decide if this is for your dog or not.

Everyone loves a doe-eyed golden-haired puppy, who doesn't? You bring them home and everyone is vying for the most puppy time. Then after a few weeks when you need to house train the little guy you look around and nobody is there. Yes, it's time for the less than popular puppy potty training.

This special time will also be the beginning of many unique bonding moments you will share with your furry friend. Sure, potty training can sometimes be inconvenient, but it is small change compared to years of cleaning up the surprises your dog will leave in the future. Here are some puppy training tips to help you and your home stay poop free.

Understand that the young puppy has limitations that are not his fault. One of them is the inability of controlling bodily wastes well for long periods of time. There will be a couple of nights wherein you will need to wake up twice to bring him out to his toilet spot. This may be a little irritating but do not rush the puppy to go when he is not ready yet. What is important is setting of good habits he will carry as he grows older.

Have a schedule for their meal times daily and do not vary from it as much as possible. His body needs to be accustomed to a certain pattern of eating and eliminating. Take him outdoors to discharge early in the morning and late at night. After meals, bring him to his designated potty place to do his business. Keep repeating a phrase the puppy will associate with toilet activities like 'go potty' until he does.

After he finishes eliminating on the right spot and with the right phrase, lavish him with praise. Let the puppy know how pleased you are and that he is the best dog in the whole world. Do the same thing again in an hour just in case another round is in order. Remember, right now the most important aspect of puppy potty training is the establishing of good habits.

Good. Now the puppy knows that going outside is what he needs to do when he wants to discharge. Now it is time to teach him how to ask permission to go out. You will need a rope, a bell and a bag of patience for this. Attach the bell at the end of the rope and hang it by the door. When you take him out for toilet activities, nudge the bell and say go potty out loud. Do this for around two weeks; at the end of this time, go to the door with him after meal times and say go potty and refrain from jingling the bell. If the puppy touches the bell praise him enthusiastically. If not, guide him to push the bell as you say go potty.

Repeat this process every single time the puppy uses his toilet privileges. Your dog will catch on and understand this as his signal to want to go out. Before long, he will know enough to tap the bell or door by himself whenever he needs to unload.

That wasn't too hard was it? When done correctly and consistently, these puppy training tips should have a well-mannered dog to show for itself. Now on to the next puppy adventure!

Dogs, like humans, can both be more or less tolerant to other dogs. Some dogs get easily acquainted to a new dog, cat or other animal. Others even have problems with the opposite sex of their own breed. Considering that dogs are social animals by nature this is strange, but still we have to deal with it.

Normally dog lovers like to have other dogs around or other pets like cats, rabbits and the like. To make sure no animal gets hurt isn't always easy to achieve. Especially when the neighbours' dog or other animals enter your dogs' territory, keeping the peace can be a challenge.

You should start the process of socializing your dog as early as possible. Like children, puppies are much more open to accept strangers. They don?t distinguish yet between friend and foe and everything is a new experience to be explored rather than feared or chased.

Your vet will tell you when you can start socializing your puppy (usually at 13-15 weeks of age). Let him meet as many other dogs, animals and people as possible. Also explore his sensitive zones like the ears, paws and eyes regularly. This way you get a well behaved dog, not only when meeting other dogs, but also when going to the vet or when you receive human friends at home.

Dogs like to explore the world by scent. When two dogs meet they like to sniff each other out. Be on your guard and make sure that both dogs know the rules of proper dog socializing.
