While you are going to need some stacks of newspapers to house train your puppy, other items are needed as well. Paying attention, patience, consistency and commitment are a part of it as well.
A guide for training your puppy is listed below. Remember that accidents will happen even if you have a full grown dog.
Be patient and consistent when training your puppy as this training period can last a couple of weeks or more.
Develop a routine.
As with babies, puppies learn faster with normal schedules. This helps the puppy learn that there is a time for going to the bathroom, playing and eating.
Normally, a puppy can control their bladder one hour for each month of age. If the puppy is four months old, he can hold it for about four hours. To keep accidents to a minimum, be sure to take your puppy out on regular breaks. For those who do not work from home, hiring a dog walker may be necessary.
Your puppy should be taken outside after or during playing, after he eats or drinks and as soon as he gets up. Find a spot outside that will be the designated bathroom area. Use a leash and take him to that area. Using phrases or words like go potty while he is using the bathroom will teach him that this means go to the bathroom.
Rewards are one way to teach your puppy. When he has finished using the bathroom praise him or give him a treat before he goes back into the house.
Using a regular feeding schedule will help with the bathroom schedule. Normally, puppies will eat three or four times a day. Feeding him at the same time every day will make him more consistent when potty training.
To keep your puppy from needing to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, put his dishes up about two hours before bedtime. If he does wake up in the middle of the night, stay calm, so he won't think it is time to play. Don't turn on a lot of lights or play with him. Take him outside and then go back to bed.
Supervise.
Keep an eye on your puppy when he is inside so he will not soil in the house.
When the puppy is not being trained or played with, have him on a six foot leash beside you. If he begins sniffing, barking, circling, scratching at the door or becomes restless, he may need to use the bathroom. Take him outside immediately if you notice this behavior. Use praise or treats to reward him when he is done using the bathroom.

Dog harnesses are used to secure a dog in a similar fashion that a dog collar would. They are a simple, but effective, tool to use with dogs. Collars are meant to be used around the neck, but a harness goes underneath your dog's chest for even distribution.
Dog harnesses are good for dogs that are hyper-active and tend to choke themselves when on a collar. Choking can lead to serious problems, such as gagging, vomiting, damaging their neck, and breathing problems. Switching to a harness will eliminate the choking problem because the harness isn't around their neck but their torso.
Dogs can sometimes get free of collars that aren't tight enough. Dogs cannot, however, slip out of a harness easily. Since a harness is placed around your dogs chest it is very difficult for even smaller dogs to wiggle out of.
Harnesses can be used in more than one way. They are helpful for walking, but also for other functions such as dog sledding. A harness allows the dog to run and pull the sled at the same time, all with out any discomfort.
Harnesses allows you to support your dog while they are walking, standing, climbing stairs, etc. A dog harness can be used to help your dog recover from an injury. Some dog harnesses will let you to lift up your dog's front and the back at the same time to help pets that are handicapped.
Dog harnesses can be used similarly to collars still. For example you can still connect a lead to the back of the harness when you leave them out in the yard. Your dog can still be secured to the lead, and he will be able to move around the yard freely.
Harnesses work well when traveling with your dog. Harnesses can be used as a dog seat belt. Adjustable nylon harnesses can attach to seat belt clips to keep your dog secure during your drives.
There are many options to choose from when deciding on a dog harness. They come in many different sizes, styles, and types. With so many options there is a good chance you will be able to find a harness that works for your dog.

As a dog owner you may be wondering whether the dog collar or dog harness is best. There always seems to be a question of which tool is best for walking, training, etc. They both have benefits, but which one is the superior of the two?
There are several factors when deciding which of these is better. A dog harness and collar can be used in similar ways to compare the two. However, they are also very different so the best of the two really depends on the goal you are trying to achieve.
Dog collars are best to hang identification tags. They also are the best for teaching your dog commands. They are very helpful for training.
For teaching dogs to walk on a leash without pulling on it, harnesses can be the best choice. Dogs are often fitted with a choke collar by owners, and it is used incorrectly. Choke collars can cause a lot of damage to your dog's throat, so if you choose to use a dog collar with training be sure to use a sturdy nylon collar that is fitted to the right size of your dog.
You have little to worry with them pulling on a leash with a harness, however. Harnesses allow the pull to be spread evenly across their chest, so you don't have to worry about damaging your dog's neck on accident. You can find no-pull harnesses made specifically for training dogs to walk on a leash.
Some dog harnesses can be difficult to get your dog in to. Dog collars are easier to put on. If you are turned off by all the straps and clips of a dog harness, invest in a step-in dog harness so all your dog simply has to do is step in to it and you are ready to go.
Dog harnesses can also double as a seat belt for your dog. If you travel a lot, a dog harness can prevent your dog from moving around your car or jumping out the car. Your dog harness can be connected to your car's seat belt to keep them safe and secure.
Both dog collars and dog harnesses can irritate your dog if he has sensitive skin. It is important to find a soft dog harness or collar. Also be sure that you fit them with the right size collar so they fit correctly.
There seems to be some argument about which works best for training your dog. Is a dog harness or a dog collar better? Which dog training and walking tool works best? For some people, taking care of pet birds is both a rewarding and therapeutic experience. By having the right bird supplies at hand, anyone can keep birds as pets at home. These supplies will depend on the bird species you have as a pet. It is important that you secure the necessary bird supplies to ensure good health and comfort for your feathered friends.
Why buy a bird cage stand
One of the most important things to secure for your feathered friend is the bird cage. The cage is where your pet will feed, play, and stay for most hours during the day. The placement of the cage is also important to avoid suffocating your pet and using up unnecessary space. A stand for your bird cage can easily solve your dilemma. Here are the reasons why:
Most birds want to be at eye level with people since this gives them more chances for interaction. A good bird cage stand can give them this advantage. A cage stand keeps your pet from feeling isolated and also provides it with better ventilation. Also, if your pet birds love interacting with people, they can easily do so at a more comfortable level. Placing the cage on the floor may expose your pets to certain dangers.
A stand for your bird cage helps you achieve organization within your home. Having pets around can add clutter to your home, especially if you don't have any designated places for the cage and other essentials. This is why keeping the bird cage in a specific area is recommended. You can achieve this by having the right stand.
Shopping for a bird cage stand
You can find most of these stands in stores that readily sell bird supplies. Most of these stands come in a variety of styles, colors, and sizes so take into account the size of the cage and the room first of all. A stand that is way too small may not provide enough balance. If you choose a stand that is too big, this may take up more space within your home.
Before buying a stand for the cage, make sure that you have an idea about the floor size of the living room or any other area within your home. Some cage stands have additional shelving compartments where you can keep supplies such as food, water, and toys.
A space- saving alternative is choosing a hanging bird cage stand. Slim and minimalist in style, hanging stands are perfect for small rooms or for hanging bird cages in corners. Hanging stands are also available in pet stores and may be painted according to specifications.
It is important that you find a cage stand in the right size to accommodate the bird cage you have at home. Also, it is important to choose cage stands that are made from durable materials, as this gives you more value for your money. This will also allow you to keep your pets comfortable while keeping your home organized.

The other week my mother-in-law asked me to walk her dog. While her dog is a relatively small dog, I ended up spending the majority of the walk struggling to get her dog to go where I wanted her to go. It was a frustrating experience, and somewhat embarrassing when others saw our struggle.
If this sounds familiar to you, there is something that can be done about a dog constantly pulling away from you on their leash. First, check to see that you are using the correct leash or walking equipment. Some leashes are useful for walking dogs, while others are useless.
It is good to remember that a dog naturally walks faster than humans do. They don't like having to stand around while we visit with neighbors either. This is a normal, natural tendency that all dogs have so it is up to you to train your dog how to use the leash and keep slack in it.
The best type of dog collar for training would be a standard nylon buckle collar or a Martingale Collar. Nylon collars don't slip off your dog's neck and are better quality dog collars. Don't try to use a choke collar because they can actually hurt your dog and damage his throat.
A retractable lead will do a good job if your dog is constantly pulling away from you. A body harness doesn't do a good job if you own a large dog. Body harnesses are not to be used when you train a dog how to use a leash, so don't use them for that reason.
The best way to train is to positively reinforce the good times. When they keep slack in the leash let them know they are doing a great job. Training collars can also be a good training device.
Be sure that your dog has very little distractions. It may be good to start training your dog inside. If you can't do that, find somewhere where your dog will be able to listen to you without being distracted by animals or people walking by.
It is best to start your training with a puppy. If you aren't that lucky, however, don't fret. You can still teach old dogs new tricks.
Being walked by your dog as opposed to walking your dog can be very frustrating and sometimes embarrassing. Jim Witt is an authority on dog training equipment. Jim recommends browsing to Country Brook Design for an excellent selection Dog Training Collars and Dog Leashes.

So you want to set up a fish tank, well the first thing that I will tell you is that you have to be patient and should not jump right into putting fish in your tank. In this article I will be explaining all of the steps to setting up a fish tank for tropical fish only.
When you are selecting an aquarium to buy you must know what kind of fish that are going to be living in it and how big the fish will get. As a simple rule, for every inch of fish that there is there should be 1 gallon of water.
The items that you will need to set up a fish tank are the aquarium, filter pump, heat pump. Optional items that you should get also are gravel, thermometer, lamp, decorations, and a back up filter pump in case the main one goes bad.
Now that you have all the items you need next is to set up the stand and put the tank on it. Make sure you choose a good spot that will not be blocking anything you will need to get to later on like receptacles, air vents, etc.
Now that your tank is positioned right it is time to leak test it. Do this by filling the tank up completely with water and let it sit for a day or two. Inspect the surrounding area for any signs of water, nothing is worse than a leaky aquarium, bad for your home and the fish. Once you are sure there are no leaks go ahead and empty the tank.
While you are leak testing your aquarium you can start filling up jugs of tap water. Mix the tap water with water conditioner as fish do not like plain tap water. I also add bacteria supplement to the water also. Make sure you follow the directions on the water conditioner bottle exactly.
Next you can start adding gravel, make sure that you rinse the gravel very good. Since the tank is still empty you can start putting in the gravel and decorations. It is very important to make sure that everything that you put into your fish tank is washed well, as it only takes a little bit of dish soap to kill fish.
Start setting up the filter pump and the heating pump. Add the water solution from the jugs that you already pre-mixed, fill the tank up to about an inch from the top. Put the overhead lamp on if you have one and turn on the heater and the filter pump, you now want to be patient and let the water cycle for a week at the minimum.
Let the fish tank cycle the water for at least one week. After that one week you can add a couple of fish to get the tanks ecosystem in action, but do not add anymore fish for at least 5 weeks. Be patient and your fish will be healthy and live for a long time.

Aquariums are known to give people a perfect opportunity to beautify their houses or offices with fish. There are several varieties of aquariums available but this mainly depends on the size and shape. The styles of aquariums are also known to largely depend on materials that are used during their production. For example, types of aquariums available can either be glass or acrylic. Since there are so many aquariums that are being sold, it is a hard task to decide on a perfect one. The following are a few factors that an individual should consider when purchasing aquariums.
Location of the Aquarium
The first consideration that needs to be taken into account before buying an aquarium is where the aquarium will be placed. Take into account what the weight of the aquarium will be when it is filled with water. Ensure that the stand or table where it will be placed is strong enough to support it. It is also important for the aquarium to be placed in an area that is not exposed to direct sunlight. Consider also the room's dcor; if the surrounding dcor will be able to complement the aquarium's presence.
The Size of the Aquarium
Once the perfect location has been identified, the next step is to choose the appropriate size of the aquarium. The aquarium size will depend on the number of fish the individual intends to have. To be able to obtain the size of the aquarium, measure the location where the tank will be placed. The larger the fish aquarium the easier the maintenance will be. It will also be much easier for the person to maintain the correct water balance for the large aquarium than with smaller aquariums. Large aquariums also prevent the fish from overcrowding. Lastly, the size bought will depend on the finances available.
Shape of the Aquarium
Aquarium tanks come in several shapes but the most common shapes that are available are tanks that are rectangular in shape. However, it is also possible to find other fish tank shapes such as round, cylindrical and hexagon. When one puts the shape of the aquarium into consideration, then tanks that have larger surface areas should be purchased. This is because the surface is very important especially since oxygen enters into the tank through it. It is also advisable to choose long tanks but not tall ones. This is due to the fact that long tanks enable the fish to have easy movements in the aquarium.
Glass or Acrylic
Aquariums can be made from either acrylic or glass. Acrylic aquariums are not as heavy as glass tanks. With acrylic fish tanks, one is able to get clear images of the fish without any distortions compared to glass tanks. On the other hand, glass aquariums are easy to clean since they do not easily scratch.

Rearing of pet fish is increasingly becoming a common occurrence and as a result increasing the popularity of obtaining pet fish. There are various fish types that can be reared. Apart from keeping them as pets, the idea of staring at the colorful display of the fish as they swim in the aquarium is a relaxing experience. The elderly, disabled as well as sick people who are under the animal therapy system utilize pet fish in addition to other types of pet.
Freshwater fish is the most popular among the pet fish. These fish attracts many people and can be found in most aquarium shops as well as various retailers dealing in different types of fish such as guppies, angelfish and goldfish.
Other than guppies, angelfish and goldfish, there are other well known fish types. The first popular fish type is known as Damsel. This kind of fish is aggressive and loves in salt water. Due to this aggressiveness, this fish will not agree with others especially when the aquarium holds too many of them.
Having two of the less aggressive types such as blue damsel or the yellow-tailed damsel is a good choice for an aquarium with saltwater. The two types are also easy to maintain as compared to the other damsel types, the three-striped damsel and the domino. The damsel can survive in tough conditions.
The mollies are a popular type of fresh water fish. Although mollies can survive in marine or salt water, it is recommended for them to be left in their natural habitat. Their ability to live in both salt and fresh water has made them very popular. The flexibility of the fish allows them to adapt to life in salt water although the process is long and tough.
This kind of fish is first kept the water bag; thereafter saltwater is slowly drenched into the bag for eight hours. One other fish type that is popular is the clown fish, which became very famous after the release of a popular animated movie especially loved by children.
Although maintaining the clown fish is not a hard task, they are not flexible and thus cannot adapt to different habitats like the mollies do. The shrimp is the fourth popular type of fish. Among the different types of shrimp available, the clean shrimp is the most popular.
This fish has a stripe down the center that is red and white in color. The fish are very popular due to their easy maintenance. However, this type of fish should not be put in the pond with many other fish.

In their natural surroundings, it is common for fish to eat only when they are hungry. Whenever there is an abundance of food, fish eat much food however, when there is not much food they can go for several days without eating. This trend has made fish to become opportunistic in that whenever they get much food they make sure they have eaten to their full.
The type of food fed to fish depends on whether they are herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. Before getting the fish, it is important to find out from the pet supplier what type of fish they are. If the fish resembles a catfish, then it is likely that they are fresh water fish meaning they feed on fish flakes, wafers as well as algae pellets.
Saltwater fish are often herbivores and their favored food is sea weed and veggie clips will also need to be purchased and placed in the tank. Some form of emerald entry and plankton could supplement the herbivorous diet.
The carnivorous types of fish often need various meat types which require chopping into tiny pieces. For this, chopped fish, clams and shrimp are the best. Frozen food such as brine shrimp and mysis can be given to the fish as well. All these food kinds can be obtained from the assorted pet stores.
Immature fish like mollies or guppies require baby fish food, which is also available in pet stores. This food is small enough to fit inside the mouths of these minute fish. If fed with flakes they have to be crushed to reduce their size.
The diet favored by goldfish is very specific and it includes flakes or pellets of high quality as well as veggie diet consisting of zucchini, cucumber green peas, water lettuce, shrimp pellets, bloodworms and duckweed. Tropical fish should not share an aquarium with goldfish.
This is because they have a different diet that cannot complement each others nutritional needs. Goldfish further release a high amount of ammonia, which cannot be handled by the tropical fish species. To find out just how much to feed the fish, try and distinguish just how much the fish are able to eat in five minutes time and that is sufficient amount.
There is no set frequency for the feeding of the fish but they may be fed up to five times a day. It is important to note that it is not just the amount but also the quality of food that matters for fish.

Dogs and puppies enjoy social interaction, much as humans do. Dogs are generally friendly and do enjoy interacting with other types of animals from canines to reptiles. Of course, dogs are different just like people are different. Some dogs can be hostile with other animals including other dogs.
If you are an animal lover, then you know the value of having several dogs, regardless of their species. This makes it very difficult to keep your house in order, and then you have the fact that your dogs will want to defend their territory. If you have ever seen a canine territorial conflict, then you know what a headache can be. We've all had the experience of walking the dog in the middle of the night, and watching a rival dog wander into the yard. Have you ever managed to make it back inside without the entire front of your body covered in wet grass?
There are ways to remedy this. Your dog needs to be taught social behavior as soon as humanly possible. They're like children, and as children, their minds are more susceptible to learning. You remember how easily you accepted things when you were a child, right? They have not established the line between a friend and an enemy; they're just trying to learn, and you need to take advantage of that.
If you have decided to have just one dog, then in it's young years you need to introduce it to other dogs. This way it will understand that not all dogs are enemies. It also needs to become used to being touched. This will make it friendlier around other people, and of course will keep it from biting every hand it happens to see.
Make sure you have and keep a tight grip on the leash, when you introduce your dog to other dogs, at least until you are positive that they will not fight one another. It may seem controlling, however, it is your job to teach the puppy right from wrong as well as keep it safe from harm.
Puppies and dogs love to play, which includes biting, jumping and shoving one another. However, you can teach them not to do such things. They do these things while playing with one another; it is part of their nature. You just want to be sure that they are not really, hurting one another while playing together. Another distraction is having your dog or puppy jump on you continually, whether or not it is a lap dog.
You might find that your dog likes to bark. All dogs love to bark, it is quite natural, but it becomes a bit nerve racking if your dog is standing in the house barking at all times. You can try to distract them with a treat, or teach them to stop barking all the time. It might not work at first, and if that is the case you will need to keep trying. Perhaps you can teach them that you will provide them a treat, but only if they will stop barking. If you use this method then over time they will learn only to bark when absolutely necessary.
One method of teaching a dog to be quite, and it's going to sound strange, is to put them on their back and yell in their faces. Okay it's not going to look good if someone walks by and sees it, but many professional dog trainers use this method. Also remember that if you have rescued an animal from either the street or an animal shelter, because they probably have not been taught from an early age. That does not mean it's impossible to train them however.
Just remember to train your dog as early as possible. Trained properly he or she can be a worthy companion and friend for years to come. Keep this in mind next time you decide to raise a four legged companion.

Bringing a new puppy home is such an exciting event for everybody! The whole family gathers around and dotes on their cute and cuddly new companion. Then something happens. The new puppy goes and pees on the carpet. Suddenly you realize that training a puppy is the price you have to pay for having a puppy in your home.
Many people find toilet training a puppy to be a frustrating and maddening experience, but it needn't be. If you educate yourself about dogs and their behavior, you can learn how to train your dog without causing either the puppy or yourself too much anxiety.
All animals, including ourselves, do what they do through a mixture of instinct and learned behavior. You may notice that your puppy will experience some anxiety before it relieves itself anywhere in the house. That is because dogs instinctively know that they don't want to soil their own dens, but your new puppy has just come to a new home and doesn't know where its "den" is.
Your puppy will be instinctively hesitant to relieve itself inside the house, but will not be able to control itself. It will sniff around the house, trying to find the place where others relieve themselves before it finally gives up and does it on the floor. It is important not to punish it for this, because it hasn't done anything wrong. It is just as important to teach it that the place it chose is not the right place and to show it where the right place is.
Do not teach it by punishment. Rubbing its nose in the poo and yelling at the dog aren't going to do any good at all. Instead, remove the waste and take it outside, where it belongs. Leave it there so the puppy can sniff out its location the next time. Clean the area indoors where the puppy relieved itself and remove all traces of odor using an appropriate cleaning solution.
Now you will have to keep an eye on your puppy and catch it before it goes, rather than after. You will easily notice the signs of distress and the times it needs to go. Take it outside as soon as it is clear that it is time. After the puppy has "done its duty, " offer it a reward and an encouraging pat. Let it know that you, the leader of the pack, approve of its good behavior.
Teaching the puppy who is boss is as important as toilet training itself. Dogs are pack animals, which means that they either follow the pack or lead the pack. Your puppy must know from the beginning that it is living in your home and that you are the leader of the pack. You need not be a harsh leader. In fact, benevolent leadership is a far better way to lead.
Training a puppy from an early age is best for everyone. You will have a happy, well-adjusted pet and your life together will be satisfying for both of you.

There are various types of goldfish and which can be distinguished by their different head shape, colors and looks. Some goldfish have eyes that are bulged up or face upwards. The position of the fins on the fish is another factor that is used to identify the type of fish. The tail can also be used to classify fish; there are some fish that have double tails, others split tails while some have only one tail.
Fantail goldfish have exceptional unique tails. Making a distinction of the different types of goldfish is important since, the fish responds to diverse factors such as water temperature and breeding methods.
There are four different goldfish groups that ought to be considered when identifying the classification categories.
Single tail goldfish: These have quite slender bodies and come in various colors from orange to variegated. Examples of this kind of goldfish are Commons, Bristol or London Shubunkis as well as Comets.
Double Tail goldfish have bodies that are slender, although coming in different colors such as white, white with a mixture of orange, orange, white though red lipped, as well as gill covers and fins.
Dorsal fin double tail goldfish consist of egg shape bodies that have long fins and billowy. The colors of the fish are diverse and these fish include Pearlscales, Demekins, Telescopes, Orandas, Veiltails, Pompoms, Ryukin and Moors.
Goldfish that are double shaped but lack dorsal fins are similar to those having dorsal fins because they come in various colors, their bodies are egg shaped inclusive of fins that are long and billowy. Fish in this category include Eggfish, Bubble Eye, Celestial and Lionhead.
Comet Goldfish are capable of thriving in conditions of extreme cold and are available in diverse colors especially orange, red as well as yellow with black spots. The tail fin is the main thing that differentiates it from other types of goldfish. The tail fin has two lobes that are positioned above each other. Comet goldfish are hardy and do well in garden ponds. They need large space because they are fast swimmers. They socialize well; thus should be kept with other fish.
Lastly, the Oranda goldfish is an attractive fish variety that is well recognized by the skin growth that surrounds its head taking the shape of a hood or cap. The growth is also present at the sides of the fish's body. The popularity of the fish has increased mainly due to its appearance and its different colors. The Oranda goldfish is available in different colors such as white and red, red and black, calico, white and black, tricolor, bronze, calico, blue, silver, white, chocolate and black. This fish variety detests cold water and is susceptible to water temperature changes.

There is still some disagreement about whether or not crate training dogs is the right way to go. Crating a dog involves keeping them in a cage just slightly larger than themselves, usually a plastic or metal one for a time, either at night or during the day.
The proponents of crate training maintain that a dog which has been crate trained is easier to housebreak, since crating a dog teaches them to hold off on elimination until they are allowed outside. Since animals instinctively are reluctant to do this in the place where they lie down, the thinking goes, this helps to speed along housebreaking. They also point to crates as a place which a dog can consider as its own private space where it can escape from the antics of children in the household and be comforted by its familiar smell.
There are of course crate training detractors as well. Their view is that restricting a dog's movement by keeping it in a cage which offers barely enough room to turn around robs dogs of the opportunity to act on their natural inclination to roam and explore its surroundings.
Those against argue with the position held by crate proponents that crating makes housebreaking a dog easier and that despite a dog's abhorrence of soiling its own space, puppies are especially prone to doing so; which makes it more difficult, not easier to housebreak them.
Both sides want only the best for their pets and the arguments made by both sides have merit. There has been some research into crate training, but there is no hard and fast answer, other than that if done with care and common sense crate training can be beneficial to some dogs and has no ill effect.
No one, not even the biggest backers of crate training would say that keeping a dog in a crate for an extended period of time is a good thing. You should never keep your dog in a crate for more than four hours " any longer than this is really too much time to deprive an animal of the ability to move freely and to take care of nature's call.
There is also the concern that a caged dog can accidentally injure itself. It's important to make sure that the dog's collar will not snag on the cage and that the cage is free of sharp edges, as well as that the cage is sturdy enough not to tip over or break when pushed by your dog.
There is one benefit to crate training which bears mentioning here, which is that pets which have been crate trained tend to have far fewer problems with travel. They'll be used to staying in a small space and they'll also have familiar smells when in their crate " which goes a long way towards keeping them comfortable during the somewhat stressful experience of travel.
Of course, there are many pet owners who say that unless absolutely necessary, your pets should be left at home while you travel. Most pets will be more comfortable in the familiar surroundings of their home (with a responsible person to care for them in their owner's absence, naturally). If you do need to travel with your pet, however, make sure to keep them in a sturdy crate which will prevent anything from getting in as well as out.
It's hard to imagine this issue being settled soon if ever, so it's up to pet owners to use their own judgment here about whether crate training is right for their dog. One good way to make a decision is to crate train your dog for a few weeks and then start leaving the door of the crate open. Let your dog decide for themselves; see if they avoid the crate or choose to spend time in it.

Puppy potty training may very well be one of the most difficult aspects of bringing home a new puppy. It requires vigilance and a dedication to constant supervision. It also requires a great deal of patience. No one enjoys the idea of a puppy going potty in the all the wrong places. We work hard to keep our homes clean and we do not enjoy those surprise methods.
Most of us develop a pretty good attitude about puppy potty training in the first week. Over time we can lose out patience and expect more than our puppy can deliver for us. It's not a personal affront when your pup makes an error. We can't expect him to get it perfect right away. He is learning, and your consistency will have a lot to do with how successful he may or may not be at his new task.
Don't let your new puppy out of your sight. If you are busy in one room, keep him with you. If you have rooms that are devoid of other people chances are this will become his room of choice when it comes to finding an indoor solution. The more you can see him while you are busy with other aspects of life the fewer accidents you will experience.
This also allows you to keep a better eye on him. If you realize that accidents are actually your mistake rather than his in the beginning, you tend to have fewer accidents in the house. Set him up on a reasonable schedule. Take him out when he wakes from a nap, after a play period, five minutes after eating, and of course before bed. This way he can start learning when to expect your next trip outside. These are also natural times when a puppy is likely to go.
When your puppy is successful you will encourage new success by having an all out treat laden party ever single time. Make sure you fuss and give him treats when he does well so that he understands without a doubt that he has done the right thing. Avoid disciplinary behaviors like hitting or nose rubbing as this doesn't really do much other than make him afraid and confused. Snatch him up while he is the middle of an accident with a strong vocal correction and march him out to where it's appropriate to go.
The more you stay on top of his movement through the house, time your outings, and reward his good behavior the more you will see improvement. It is important to remember that a few successes in a row doesn't mean he totally has it. Don't let your guard down.
Puppy potty training can be complicated by health factors. It can also become more complex if your dog starts to sexually mature. Often nearing the sexual maturity mark can mean a return of accidents in the house.
Crate training can help a great deal with puppy potty training. He can learn to hold it better when it means he has to sleep with it while you're gone. Puppies do not like to have to live and eat where they take care of business, and thus crate training can be a wonderful tool in breaking the accident cycle.

Periodically the distinction between management and restraint is lost. Using commands and hand gestures, with harnesses or food rewards, to stimulate wanted behavior is discipline. Using choke or shock collars, electronic boundaries and related devices is for control of unwanted behaviors.
Control isn't of necessity harmful. Dogs instinctively have the need for and gravitate to the continuity of a community in which someone is the 'alpha wolf' and in a dog and a human relationship the human has to take that job. To allow the dog to establish himself as the alpha dog means property destruction, potentially threatening conditions for other dogs and humans, human dissatisfaction and a maladjusted dog.
Correction collars were developed to give a hand in gaining the ability to manage. Dogs, like humans, are individuals. Some are by nature more assertive or slower to be trained. For ones that don't react positively to a typical leather or nylon collar, a metal choke collar can provide for extra discouragement from tugging and jumping up.
The immediate negative is that when correcting collars are used inappropriately - as is all too possible - they can give you results you didn't want and also be potentially unhealthy. Choke collars fit only one way and when correctly fitted should make allowance for a one to three fingers distance between the neck and the collar; three fingers for bigger dogs, one finger for smaller. By and large a collar two inches longer than the circumference of the neck will be ok.
Used inappropriately, by-the-way, choke collars can chafe the skin - resulting in wounds that scratching will make worse. They can also inadvertently compress the trachea. A quick jerk and then loose lead isn't harmful, however in accordance with its purpose it does create unpleasant pressure. But for dogs that persist in trying to resist the leash this device may not be enough to do the job. Generally, it is not approved of, especially for smaller dogs.
Prong collars are not as hazardous as they appear, but - from this handler's prospective - have almost no positive properties. The only good aspect of this devices' design is their limited diameter - they can only close down so far. Nonetheless, a critter with such an unyielding proclivity to pull that prongs are meaningless must have more than a quick fix consisting of choking and 'pronging'. That kind of dog most likely needs to have tenacious and persistent behavior modification training.
Halter collars, which encircle the neck and the snout, but don't hamper panting or impair drinking, can give further restraint. The downside is they don't assuage biting if that's a problem. If biting is not a concern an ordinary leash and collar, or perhaps a chest halter might be preferred.
'Stop-barking' collars on occasion work when training those dogs that continue in a barking mode way past the reason to do so is gone. Barking is natural and an ordinary response to potential danger and is also used to draw attention when one becomes removed or separated from the group. But, for reasons not all that well comprehended, some individuals continue barking day in and day out or are set off by the most minor events.
Electronic collars that deter barking come in two main varieties: Shock producing collars and noise producing collars. Noise collars create a brief, uncomfortable noise that acts as a diversion and helps to prevent unrelenting barking.
Shock collars generate a temporary but unpleasant electric shock that is repeated during long-continuing or obstinate barking. Nonsubjective evaluations of their efficiency disclose mixed results, however. As with prong collars, any dog who is a candidate for one would profit more from knowledgeable, experienced training to determine the psychological reasons for excessive barking.
At times the perceived quickest route to solving a problem seems attractive and doable... until they become an overused alternative to more appropriate (both to trainer and dog) long-term training. Putting in the time to comprehend how to gain your dog's undivided attention and compliance without inordinate amounts of reliance on control equipment is definitely the better way to go. The results are happier dog handlers and more stable dogs.

You may call your dog dumb, but how many times have his soulful eyes and beseeching paw made you pass him a treat under the table? The truth is that even dogs who are a little short on brains can be very clever!
One of the reasons why the thousands upon thousands of years of love between people and dogs has lasted so long is because we communicate in a way that they understand. When a dog comes to you with his frisbee and drops it at your feet, you know without being told that he thinks it's time to play fetch.
These are just two ways that your dog can tell you what he wants and what he is thinking and this shows that indeed, he can learn!
Through language and body posture, they communicate with us, but remember that they process it very differently from the ways than we do.
Just to start off with, they see in low light much better than we do, their eyes respond to color differently, and they can rotate their ears very quickly, letting them figure out where sounds are coming from. Don't forget that famous nose, either!
These differences will equal difference in the way that their minds work. Their ability to understand cause and effect relationships is quite different from ours.
When it comes to classic consideration, where the subject figures out the connection between cause and effect, we can beat it pretty easily if it was just a coincidence. On the other hand, dogs create a very persistent relation between cause and effect.
Operant conditioning is where we learn about cause and effect through positive and negative reinforcement and is something that is even more different between humans and dogs.
Whenever I am going to go play fetch with my Golden Retrievers, I go out the back door. Whenever I do this, we always play fetch. On the other hand, when I let them out the side door, I never go with them, and I just let them go outside for half an hour or so. Because of this, they know to go to the back when it is time to play games.
When I train my dogs, I always use a certain tone and a unique hand gesture with every command, and this lets them learn a wide range of behaviors. They will lie down, roll over, release their jaws, come, sit, fetch, drop it and even eliminate on command.
However, remember that if too much time passes between cause and effect, they are going to lose it. For instance, how many times can you tell them that eating something off the ground is bad for them? The stomachaches that result have no connection in their heads to the food because it was too long ago!
Whether your dog is a Retriever or a Shepherd, a Basset Hound or a Dachshund, you'll find that you can get him to learn a lot of different things, as long as you know what is possible and what to expect
For instance, consider people on the show circuit who can teach their dogs to go through a complex dance routine, or search and rescue dogs that can pull children from avalanches of snow and flooded rivers. Service dogs can fetch a container of water without spilling a drop, or open a door or pull a wheelchair.
Remember, though, that they are not people, and that even when they try to act like us and communicate like us, they are still going to do things like eat little dead critters they find in the yard and turn around three times before they sleep!

Dogs come in a wide variety of breeds, so much so that sometimes it is best to not even consider them all of the same species. The only reason that biologists do is that they have the ability to interbreed with other dogs. Dog owners however, have various goals and it is better to highlight the differences in dogs than their similarities.
A Great Dane looks different and thinks and behaves and much differently than a Jack Russell. The former is usually calmer. A Collie is very different from a Golden Retriever, who is very excitable and fun loving. A Chihuahua and a German Shepherd have very little in common other than being a dog.
Because of these basic differences, you should customize the training to the breed you intend to train. All dogs require patience while training, however some will require more patience than others will. German Shepherds are an intelligent breed that enjoys performing with obedience commands. Jack Russell's are intelligent; however, they have a strong sense of willpower and deserve a variation of technique.
One highly active, high-energy dog is a terrier, distraction techniques work well for them. They have the ability to spot movement and then they quickly go after the animal making the movement. It can be a challenge to keep their attention while training them. You may consider using dog treats, toy and other objects to keep their attention on you, by wiggling the object in their face to do so.
Collies are very mellow and are trainable as well; however, they are very loyal and protective animals, which is a good thing. However, it can be a problem if your collie continually barks and tries to attack anyone they consider a threat to the family. This may be desirable at night for a watchdog; however, it can be very annoying each time someone passes your house on the sidewalk in daylight.
Bark collars are can be useful under these circumstances. However, once darkness falls you should remove the collar. This will help the dog associate discouragement from barking in the day, while it can function as a watchdog during the night.
Dalmatians are very strong and highly energetic they make great companions. For a dog like this to have to spend hours alone in, a small backyard with no one to play with can cause problems. You will need to take the time to help this dog use up its excess energy.
The only speed Dalmatians understand is full speed ahead. They do require a large area for running and playing. They require a master who can toss the ball far, far away and still be able to command them fully. They are loyal dogs that need a strong hand, since it takes a forceful master to be the alpha dog as far as a Dalmatian is concerned.
Your training method will need revising to fit the nature of the dog you are training. You will need to consider both aspects concerning the breed and the individual character of your dog. Similar to humans, dogs are individuals as well.

If you have a dog and you need to train it but you don't have the energy, patience or time to devote to it, you aren't alone. This is an undertaking that requires a lot of all of these things, and what you want is a safe, well adjusted dog and for you to be happy with the results, too. What may help you get there is to hire a professional dog trainer.
When it comes to hiring a trainer, quality and cost are going to vary as with any profession. Training philosophies are also probably going to differ significantly depending on the trainer, too, especially because it involves interacting with animals. Therefore, take the following things into consideration as you make your selection.
Take a look at your budget and what you need in terms of obedience training services. In some cases, training may even be free, supplied weekly by volunteers who work in shelters or parks. In other cases, you may pay up to $100 or more per session. A "reasonable fee" will vary, depending on where you live, the trainer's experience, how long the program is, and what goals you have for your pet.
Take a look at your schedule. Some training programs happen every week, while others happen more often. Some training programs have you leave the dog at the facility, while others will want you to stay and participate in the training. Regardless, though, most trainers will want you to spend some time training your dog every day, either at the trainer's facility or at home.
In some cases, you may want to consider so-called "boot camp" training programs. In that case, your dog will go away to a special facility for quite awhile, up to several weeks. The training the dog receives is intensive, happens over the training period of time, and it happens very regularly, too. However, don't be concerned that this is too hard on dogs. Dogs love this type of treatment. Near the end of this type of training, you, too, will usually have to participate so that the dog's obedience is "transferred" from the trainers to you.
The results of these programs are often amazing, though. For those dogs who graduate, even if they're not involved in "special service" types of functions, they are actually eager to follow instructions, and are very disciplined besides. Paradoxically, though, these dogs show no signs of repression and in fact are usually very playful and happy.
Next, take a look at your goals. Do you want your dog to be able to enter dog shows, or do you just want him to be well behaved enough to not chase the cat or chew on your furniture? Either way, you'll need to have your dog training so that these types of misbehaviors don't happen and good behavior is the result. How you do this and what type of training program you undertake is going to differ depending on individual temperament and your dog's breed.
Take a look at your dog's temperament; for example, is your dog fearful, either because he was mistreated before or just because it's submissive? Or, your dog may be assertive, either because it's been abused previously and has had to fight back, or simply because it wants to be "leader of the pack." The training you choose is going to depend on how you want to influence your dog and the characteristics you want to mold.
No matter what your goals are, and no matter your budget or commitment to time, you'll want to choose a trainer who has a lot of patience and a lot of energy, in addition to a deep affection for dogs in general. Most have these characteristics in abundance, or they wouldn't be in that profession.
Besides these things, though, you want a trainer who agrees with you in terms of philosophy and who wants to achieve the same goals for your dog that you do. Some trainers feel that dog training is just as much or even more about training the owner than training a dog, and there may be some truth to that, sometimes. Some trainers are friendly, lenient, and seek to "connect" with the dog, while others are almost military in their bearing and expect to be able to "command" the dog. Many trainers utilize a mix of both styles.
Your training style preferences will vary, but regardless, training style is not usually entirely subjective. Even if you have disagreements with your trainer, you'll usually have some areas of agreement, too. Consistency, persistence and patience, as well as your need (as the pack leader) to lead are just a few of these commonly held principles.
When you look for your own trainer, ask for recommendations from friends and family who share similar philosophies, and shop around. You may have to change trainers at least once if you aren't happy with whom you've picked at first. Don't change on a whim, though. One of the most important parts of obedience training is that consistency is key, and a regular environment is necessary so that the dog can integrate what's being taught.

Saltwater tanks are aquariums that mimic an ocean atmosphere to support salt water fish as opposed to fresh water fish. Saltwater tanks are seen to be more difficult to maintain compared to freshwater tanks because they do not have much tolerance for fluctuations that are known to occur inside the closed environments of aquariums. If saltwater tanks are set up in the proper way, they operate like a self-supporting ecosystem.
Within this ecosystem that was artificially created, the various components depend upon each other to achieve stability. The moment a person commences fish keeping in saltwater they get involved in a balancing act that entails monitoring and maintaining a number of perimeters to keep the entire system's stability.
Stability is quite crucial inside saltwater tanks because any changes can cause illness for the fish. Among the factors known to significantly contribute to a saltwater tank's stability is the temperature it entails. In case of any temperature fluctuations the fish can get affected. Another significant factor to consider is the tank's size and for the fish to have stability, the saltwater tank needs to be big. Three different types of tanks exist for one to choose.
Among the three kinds is the saltwater tank that entails fish only and comes with a usually longer nitrogen cycle. Another frequent practice to take place inside a tank that has only fish is water testing.
Another type is the tank that combines live rocks and fish. The rocks within these tanks play a big part in speeding up the process of nitrogen production as well as easing the control of the general environment of the saltwater tank easier. Essentially, the rocks become the tank's filtration system. Reef tanks are the third type and this tank's main focus is the coral as well as other reef formations that are included in the tank.
Fish have the ability to keep the life going in these tanks but are not the main focus of the tank. Reef saltwater fish tanks need hard work and are quite costly as well. However, many people know the fish to be most beautiful. When choosing a saltwater fish tank, the exact place where the tank will be placed in the home is among the important considerations as the fish tank to be bought's size depends on it. Another important consideration is the surface area of the tank.

If you are in the process of getting a dog, thinking of having a dog or if you already have a dog, one important thing to ask yourself is - what does my dog need? Although it may seem like a very easy question, you'll soon come to terms with the fact that your dog needs a lot of things.
The best thing to do when it comes to this is to make a list of things that your dog needs. We are not talking about an imaginary list that you just have in your hand. You have to actually get a pen and paper and write these things down so you won't forget, but also so you can figure out what items or accessories to prioritize.
You will also have to choose the right kind of bedding for him. He would require his own bed and that will be his safe zone in the house. You should get a bed that is soft and easy to clean and the length of the bed will depend on the breed and size of your dog.
It is also important to consider your dog's exercise and daily activities on your list by adding doggie toys and a leash to the items that you already have listed down.
It is also important to consider your dog's exercise and daily activities on your list by adding doggie toys and a leash to the items that you already have listed down. When thinking of a leash, make sure that it fits your dog properly so it does not strangle him, but allows you to control him while you are taking a walk or a jog. As for doggie toys, make sure that it matches the mood and personality of your dog.
Is your dog an active dog or a sedentary dog? There are many options available for both and they need to be considered before you opt to purchase one toy over the other. Every dog has a strength and weakness, just like their human counter-parts
Although that is perfectly fine, you have to make sure that you are not simply splurging by impulse and that the items you are buying fits your dog's needs.

Aquariums give people the prefect opportunity to decorate their homes with aquatic organisms. There are various types of aquariums depending on their shapes and sizes. The type of aquarium also depends on the material used in making it, for instance aquariums are available in a choice of either acrylic or glass. With the various aquariums available, deciding on the perfect type can be a difficult task. Below are some factors that one needs to consider when buying aquariums.
Placing the Aquarium
As mentioned above, there are several factors that should be considered before buying any type of aquarium. The first thing that should be considered is the area where the aquarium will be located. Take into consideration the aquarium's weight as well especially once it is full of water. It is a fact that the aquarium will become heavy after it is filled with water. Thus, one should make sure that the table and stand where the aquarium will be placed is strong and can support it. Another crucial factor is that the aquarium should be located away from direct sunlight. The dcor of the room should also be put into consideration. The existing room's dcor should complement the aquarium.
Aquarium Size
The next step after identifying the best location to place the aquarium is choosing the most appropriate aquarium size. The size of the aquarium largely depends on the quantity of fish that a person intends to keep. To determine the size of the aquarium, the area where the aquarium's tank will be positioned should be measured. However, it is much easier to maintain a bigger fish aquarium. Furthermore, it is much easier to keep a balanced water level in a bigger aquarium than in a small one. It is even advisable to choose larger aquariums because they prevent overcrowding of the fish. Finally, the aquarium size to be bought still depends on the person's budget.
The Aquarium's Shape

Have you ever come home to find your dog lounging in what we may consider unusual positions such as on his back or draped over furniture or pillows on your couch? No matter what the size of your dog, by measuring him when he is lying down and adding 9" to 12" you will establish the size he needs. It's that effortless.
Another consideration to help determine the best kind of dog beds for sale for your friend is where he spends most of his time. Is he an inside or outside dog? Having a dog is a big responsibility. You may not have realized it when you first decided to get a new puppy as a pet but they come with a lot of work. You need to house, freed, groom and care for your pet on a daily basis.
One of the most frustrating things about being a dog owner is not being able to communicate with your pet. You can't understand them and they can't understand you. This can make training your dog to understand the boundaries of you property very hard.
This is why you keep your pet on a leash at all times when they are in the backyard. Have you ever watched your pet outside chained to a post or a dog house. No matter how many times you untangle their leash it always seems to get caught up again. They don't have much room at all to run around and play like dogs do.
It would truly be a wonderful thing if you could somehow explain to your pet that they need to stay in the backyard. You could then let them roam freely. They could run and play and be happy. They could be left alone, without supervision and without any need to worry. If this sounds good to you I may have the answer to your problem.
If you are interested in being able to let your dog be truly free on your property you should consider wireless dog fences. These fences are completely invisible and will not blemish your backyard, all while teaching your dog not to run off. You can leave your dog alone, unleashed and not have to worry.
There are two different parts that go to the wireless dog fence. The transmitter sends the signal and the dog collar receives it. Whenever your pet begins to stray past the transmitters set boundaries, they will hear a warning sound. If your dog continues on that path they will get a corrective shock. There is no need to worry as this shock is mearly a warning and is not painful for the animal.
The "shock" is only to remind your dog that they have passed to far away from home. Over time your dog will learn the boundaries of your property and automatically stay within them. This is one of the easiest and most effective way to train your dog.
This is a fairly priced and very effective way to teach your dog not to wander off of your property. Think of how nice it would be to be able to let your pet roam freely on your property without having to worry about their safety.

A canine collar can be constructed of plastic, leather or a cloth and is to be put around a dog's neck to keep the pup from running away. A dog collar is used by many for a number of unique uses. Some owners use a dog collar to tie up the dog and take him/her on a stroll; individuals love canines and so they want to keep them from running. It can be devastating to deal with the death of a pet for this reason.
Owners who have bigger dogs (Great Danes, Bulldogs, or German shepherds, for instance) would want to get a leather collar because leather is can withstand a lot of abuse. Furthermore, many prefer the appearance of leather over other materials. As long as the canine does not tug the chain, which is bound to the collar, the leather collar should not break. Also people who have smaller dogs like a Pomeranian would be better off with a cloth or nylon-webbed canine collar. These are usually cheaper and available in smaller sizes for smaller breed pups such as the Pomeranian. Because most small canines do not have enough strength to rip through a collar, for smaller dogs, these nylon or cloth collars are one of the better choices. These collars come in different colors, designs, and sizes. Not only are there a myriad of colors but also available are florescent collars that shine in pitch black so that the individual can see his/her canine without fail.
Collars are not limited to specific styles and sizes unique to certain breeds; they are also constructed to take on other reasons. Some collars include studs or other decorations that can add a sparkly look; especially if the canine is a female. These studs, however, are not just for decoration purposes. Studs are sometimes used to provide safety for the canine in case another dog tries to bite the dog that has the studded collar on.
Beside the colors and decorations, dog collars can also come with pest killing agents on them. Typically, these medicated collars are dunked in a solution that causes fleas to die. Additionally, medicated collars are used to help a dog's suffering from several dermal conditions. The medication that are distributed through the color is in low doses and hangs on for a few months.
Canine collars may be used for educational purposes. These collars are normally used exclusively for coaching and removed when not in training. These collars should always be worn lose; there have been mortal cases due to an over-tightened collar circling the dog's neck. It is essential that this collar be used specifically for training, and for no other reason. If you have questions about how to utilize the collar, you should get advice from a dog trainer online or at a specialized training program.
Dog collars are one of the most important parts of dog ownership. Not only is it a good idea for your dog to be on a leash, it is also not dangerous for others. Often, collars are manufactured to attach a tag on the dog that has on it their owner's home location and phone number if the dog gets lost. This very feature has made it possible for many pups to be placed back with their owners after getting disoriented.

Canine collars are an essential component to keeping man's best friend. Not only is it not dangerous for your dog to be on a leash, it is also safe for other people. Often, collars are made to attach a tag on the pup that displays their owner's home location and phone number if the dog gets lost. This very benefit has given the ability for many pups to be reunited with their owners after being lost.

Dogs have a natural proclivity to jump on people. How often they do this will vary with breed and personality. It's been suggested that dogs jump up on people to get a better look at someone's face -- not to attack that person, but to interact with him or her. Dogs interact with each other this way, too. Especially if they're of similar breeds, their faces are close to each other and they use their senses of smell and vision to explore.
Therefore, one way to get your dog to stop jumping is to remove his or her need to reach out to you. Instead, kneel down and "get on the dog's level." Let your dog explore your face safely, at the same time watching for too much assertiveness on the dog's part. Most dogs won't bite their owners this way, especially if the owner has assumed the "alpha" position, or leader of the pack position.
There are some caveats to this, though. If you have adopted an older dog instead of a puppy, use this technique with caution. You can protect yourself from any potential injury by putting a collar on your dog and then inserting your thumb underneath it behind the dog's neck. If the dog appears to be getting overly aggressive, simply jerk your thumb sideways to stop the dog's actions.
If at all possible, jerk your dog sideways instead of sharply backwards, because you can bruise your dog's throat very easily with a sudden backward motion. This is true even though a dog's neck muscles are very strong. In addition, this "sideways jerking" movement is meant to protect you and educate your dog, not to punish him or her.
You can also train your dog off leash not to jump. To do this, wear a pair of sturdy pants and place your dog, standing, in front of you. You can train your dog to "sit" as a means to avoid jumping, but the dog is not going to be able to sit all the time. A dog usually jumps when he or she has been running or standing. Therefore, you'll want to train your dog from a standing position.
Your dog will have a certain body tension if he or she is about to jump. Watch for this and when it happens, tell your dog to "sit." If the dog still jumps, pick your leg up just slightly and nudge your dog in the chest with your knee or thigh. As you do so, put your hand palm out near your dog's face and say, "Off!" as you do so. (Don't say "down," since that indicates a different behavior.)
Again, when you do this, be gentle. Don't knock your dog in the chest overly hard, and don't push your hand into his or her face. Your raised knee or thigh simply blocks the dog from jumping and puts it slightly off balance. You're putting your hand palm up and outward as you do so to block the dog's vision and discourage him or her from jumping again.
If you can work with a partner, you can try leash training if your dog simply isn't responding properly with the other method. When the dog begins to jump, have your partner jerk the dog sideways as you say, "Off!" Make sure it's you and not your partner saying, "Off!", since you are the one the dog should be focusing on and obeying.
If you don't have a partner and you are working outside, you can wrap the leash (assuming it's long) around a post or tree. This is somewhat more difficult, because the dog will be jerked backwards instead of sideways, which is less desirable than a sideways jerk.
You can use positive reinforcement to teach your dog, too. In that case, take a favorite toy or treat in one hand, and when your dog begins to jump, hold the treat/toy above and slightly behind your dog's head. This will distract your dog and slightly unbalance him or her. It also encourages the dog to sit, just when he or she wanted to jump.
It's important to be consistent and to practice repetition when you're training your dog, whether it's in avoiding this behavior or for anything else. You should be firm but patient when you are training your dog. Over time, most dogs will learn to avoid jumping, as is their natural tendency, unless and until you give them permission to do so.

Francis Bacon once said, "Nature to be commanded, must be obeyed." When it comes to training a dog, this saying is very wise indeed. Dogs, as a species, are accustomed to a hierarchy structure of command and leadership. That's the way they naturally function and would continue to function if we had not domesticated them to be pets. So they are accustomed to a structure where everyone-or every dog-has his place in the pack-from the alpha leader to the bottom or omega dog. When you teach your dog the "down" technique, you are asserting your place as the alpha in the dog's world.
Functionally, it is good for your dog to know and obey the down command. This can save your furniture from getting battered about and small children from getting knocked down. It's also a good start for your dog to learn additional commands such as "crawl" or "roll over" or even tricks.
It is advantageous that such behavior is more often than not quite straightforward to teach. That is why it is most fitting to get mileage out of such unprompted behavior whenever possible. This can be done by keeping an eye on the dog and reacting when there is a clear movement from standing to a sitting position orsensations4 from a sitting position to a down posture.
When this happens, you want to speak a specific command and use a unique hand gesture simultaneously. This gesture should be something you would not normally do, so you must make a special effort to do it. Every single time the dog goes into this position, you should clearly issue the command and make that hand gesture. Always use the same tone of voice.
After the command and as soon as the point of completion of the behavior is arrived at, praise the dog lavishly. At the start, the dog will not have a clear conception of why it is getting praise. In fact, this does not matter. With the repeating of these maneuvers, the dog's behavior will follow the command. Don't forget, it is the correct behavior you are after.
At first your dog probably won't obey as commanded because he's not certain what you want. So you will need to be patient and consistent. The best way to teach a new behavior is to work with the dog alone, away from other people and voices and distractions.
Another way to help your dog learn the down command and reward him is to do the following. When your dog is in a sitting position, place a toy or treat on the ground right near the front of the dog's nose where he will naturally want to lie down to engage with it. At the same time, simultaneously give the down command and then reward the dog with praise when he complies.
Helping to focus your dog's attention with the toy or snack, use a 'waving down' hand movement, with your palm towards the floor position. Be sure to avoid rewarding any dog with praise or a treat unless the behavior is accomplished and exactly correct. Be that as it may, if things don't go the way you want them to, take care not to become upset with the dog.
Some dogs require complementary training with a leash and collar to assist. To do this, get a short leather or nylon leash-a maximum of 4 feet long. Place the dog in the sitting position and kneel so you are in front of the dog facing him.
Now make the command and unique hand gesture you will use for this command while also moving the toy or treat from a spot near the chin of the dog down to the ground. At the same time, calmly and slowly pull down on the leash to nudge the dog into the downward position you desire. Do not jerk on the leash or punish the dog or give any negative feedback. Again, follow up with praise when the dog completes the desired behavior.
In those really hard cases where the dog does not do what is expected immediately, kneel down and put the leash under one foot and then slide the loop under the knee of the dog's opposite leg. Do this while facing the dog at a slight angle. The goal is to pull the lead loop with your other foot gently pulling the dog down. At the same time, you should gently take each of the dog's forelegs and pull them towards you while you give the vocal command.
When the dog is in the correct position, you should praise the dog profusely even though you were the one who initiated the movement and not the dog. You always want the dog to couple such a position with good feelings: both his feelings and yours.

Enjoying the outdoor sun is a natural activity with beautiful summer. Many of us love the water just like some dogs love the water. Even dog breed that don't normally enjoy getting wet will enjoy a swim if they are encouraged or don't want to miss the fun!
There are canines that enjoy swimming with people, retrieving toys or simply just running around in the water. Certain dog breeds have been bred to be around water. Some of these breeds are: Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundland, Golden Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, Portuguese Water Dogs, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Some Poodles and Spaniel breeds also enjoy the water. Don't rule out many mixed breeds that are always ready to dive in!
Dogs need exercise daily. Exercise will not only improve their health, but make them calmer when indoors. Taking your dog along on your day at the beach can provide hours of fun for you and your dog.
Float toys can also bring hours of exercise and pleasure to your dog. Many floating dog toys have ropes attached for handles that make it easy to launch into the water.
Drowning can be a side effect of dog swimming when they are exhausted. Therefore, pet life preservers are available at many pet stores and come in a range of sizes and styles. This will help dog owners enjoy their day at the beach, knowing their dog will not drown
If you don't want to travel outside of your own backyard, your dog can take a dip in your pool. This is really a personal preference since some pool filters can't handle dog hair. Even if your dog doesn't shed, pool owners have differing opinions about pets in the pool. Sometimes dogs can rip the liner or damage the pool equipment.
A simple solution is to purchase a separate pool made specifically for dogs. A durable dog pool is transportable, easy to fill and empty and made of tough PVC for long lasting use. These pools are ideal for a quick dip in the pool in the backyard, deck or patio. These types of pools fold down completely making it easy to take on a summer vacations and easy to store during the winter.
The Dog Days of Summer are here. Give your dog cooling relief from the heat. Have a wonderful summer and share your love of the water with your pet.

Do you like brightly colored fish in your aquarium? Then, chances are that you would like to have betta fish because they have bright and beautiful colors and you can choose from a wide range, including green, blue, turquoise, yellow, orange, and red. However, you might have to buy separate betta fish tanks and supplies because it is hard to keep this tropical fish in the same aquarium with other fishes due to its aggressive tendencies.
First of all, you cannot use decorative vases as betta fish tanks because the space available for the fish is too small. You might see this kind of display in some of the pet shops that you visit in which a water lily is often placed on the top of the vase. Many people have the misconception that because betta fish can survive in tight spaces like in the rice paddies of Cambodia and Thailand where they came from, they can be made to live in confined spaces like a vase.
The betta fish can live in tight places but this does not mean that your fish tank has to be small. It requires some room to swim and you are able to prevent it from damaging its scales or fins by providing the right amount of space. A volume of approximately two gallons of water is often recommended for betta fish tanks.
The betta fish has the advantage of not requiring as much dissolved oxygen in the water compared to other tropical fish but it still needs oxygen-rich and clean water. Therefore, it would be advisable to employ a filtration system to prevent contamination by bacteria, ammonia, decaying plants, and other harmful substances. Many filtration systems also create some kind of aeration and this could be adequate for the two-gallon tanks.
Luckily, you can save some money by not having to buy a separate aeration system because the filtration device can also provide this. It can cause bubbles on the water surface and this is enough for the purpose of introducing more oxygen into the water.
There are many kinds of available food for betta fish and you can buy them in the form of flakes or pellets for your convenience. You can also purchase those that have been frozen or freeze dried but sometimes, it would also be advisable to buy some brine shrimp, glass worms, and blood worms to satisfy the betta fish's carnivorous appetite.
For medicine, you will have to search for a local expert who can recommend the proper medications for you to buy. Ask him or her for some tips on how to determine if your betta fish has some health problems because this may be evident through its physical appearance and behavior. Sometimes it may choose to remain in hiding, it may refuse to eat, or its color may change.
With regards to ornaments, you can really have some fun with this because the betta fish is colorful and you can play with various combinations of decorations that are also colorful. While gravel is not really needed, you can add an inch-thick layer of gravel to provide some interesting contours. Just remember to avoid putting in those that have sharp edges because these can injure your betta fish.

Setting up a fully functional aquarium does not merely require a fish tank and a stand. There are a few accessories you need to set up, and among the most important are fish tank heaters. Aquarium heaters help maintain the right temperature in the water, which is important if you want your fish and aquatic plants to thrive in an ideal environment.
Fish tanks need to be able to provide the right temperature for the right kind of fish, since not all fish types necessitate the same level of water temperature. During the winter months, your fish needs sufficient heating for optimum health. In their natural habitat, the water temperature typically varies from 18 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. Before buying any heater, make sure that it provides the kind of heating needed by your fish.
The size of your fish tank needs to be considered too, if you must buy a heater. Generally, a small fish tank would require a low-watt heater, such as one with only 25 watts of power. If you have a 75-gallon tank for example, you will require a more powerful heater, such as a 300-watt aquarium heater.
If you must put some aquatic plants in your fish tank, setting up the right heater is highly necessary. Fish tank heaters do not merely keep the fish alive especially during wintry months; they provide enough heat for the plants too. In line with this, both the fish and the plants should require the same temperature in order to thrive.
The fish cannot breed successfully in low water temperatures, so heating is always a requirement for fish tanks when breeding. Different fish species normally require various temperatures in order to breed effectively, but the normal temperature ranges from 25 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is below 20 degrees, the breeding success rate may not be as high as expected
You need to take note nonetheless that there are many other factors which contribute to the success rate of fish breeding. It is important that you monitor the pressure and current of the water too. The temperature of your tank is just one of the more crucial factors which you should keep an eye on. Using a thermometer will help you do this with ease.
Fish do not produce body heat by themselves, which is why they thrive best in an environment where there is adequate heating. Fish tank heaters are also necessary even during warmer seasons. The water temperature could vary between night and day, making it uncomfortable for your aquarium fish. Fish normally dont like being placed in fluctuating environments. A heater distributes an even temperature throughout the tank, so the fish can grow and breed in comfort.
Heaters can take some time before being able to fully warm the tank. Placing a lid on your fish tank allows for faster and more thorough heating. There are many types of heaters available in the market, so it is best to choose a top quality product. Placing the heater properly helps prevent any accidents or damage. Fish tank heaters play a crucial role in maintaining the health of your fish and aquarium plants, so it is always best to choose them with care.

The brightly colored betta fish from the tropical countries of Cambodia and Thailand is a favorite of people who like to have fish as pets. The betta fish, which originated from fresh waters, may be bought in a variety of colors including turquoise, red, orange, blue, yellow, and green. Here are some tips on looking for the best betta fish supplies and tanks for your home.
Even if you find betta fish being shown in beautiful vases at pet shops, this is not the best arrangement for this tropical fish. This kind of fish is known to be able to survive in tight places such as in rice paddies, but this does not mean that this is the best way to care of it.
The betta fish can live in tight places but this does not mean that your fish tank has to be small. It requires some room to swim and you are able to prevent it from damaging its scales or fins by providing the right amount of space. A volume of approximately two gallons of water is often recommended for betta fish tanks.
Because the betta fish is not that delicate when it comes to dissolved oxygen in the water, some people think that betta fish tanks do not need aeration and filtration systems. However, you may want to put in a simple kind of filtration system to make sure that harmful elements, such as bacteria, rotting plant material, or ammonia, do not pile up.
Luckily, you can save some money by not having to buy a separate aeration system because the filtration device can also provide this. It can cause bubbles on the water surface and this is enough for the purpose of introducing more oxygen into the water.

The heating in your fish tank should be properly distributed throughout, so you need to pick a heating device that fits the requirements of your tank. You also need to avoid placing a high wattage aquarium heater in a small fish tank, so you can keep the temperature at the ideal levels. Likewise, if you have a bigger tank, choose a heater that can accommodate its needs better.
Fish breeders need to note however that heating is just one of the many factors that affect the outcome of fish propagation. You also need to take into account the water current and pressure, as well as the chemistry in the water. The best way to monitor the water temperature successfully is to use a thermometer on a regular basis.
Fish are unable to produce their own body heating, so your aquarium should have quality heating accessories. In fact, setting up aquarium heaters is also needed even for places with warmer climates. The temperature can vary between the day and night, and since most fish do not like fluctuations in temperature, it is best to choose the appropriate heating device.
Keeping a lid on your aquarium will allow it to heat fast, so if you want faster and more even heating, you can place a lid on the tank. The proper placement of the heater needs to be taken care of at all times, depending on the type of heater you have chosen. Whether you plan on installing an aquarium for hobby purposes or you want to get into fish breeding, choosing the right fish tank heaters should be one of your priorities.

Dogs are usually high strung and are eager to do whatever the owner wants. Dogs are happiest when they have something to do, and even more so when they actually receive some sort of treat for having done it. These are things that you're going to want to use to your advantage as you try to teach them to do different tricks. The things that they do naturally can be very useful in teaching them to do new things. These habits that they have developed along with the treats that you give them make it a lot easier to train a dog.
Watch what your dog does for his own enjoyment. Does he leap into the air pursuing butterflies? Does he like to turn in circles chasing his tail? If some kind of impromptu behavior can be cultivated into an entertaining trick, that will shorten the training process. Be at the ready to use a fitting hand signal and voice command when this behavior is shown and then carry through with an immediate reward.
Some dogs have weight or diet concerns so don't go overboard with the food treats. Training with treats may be a reasonable way to get started and to reinforce your dog's attention and focus but eventually you want your dog reacting and doing tricks as a result of verbal directions, hand signs, and praise for a a completed and well done trick. Once the appropriate signal-command/reaction-trick interrelations are rooted and habitual the use of treats can be limited or finally stopped.
Most dogs don't take very long to get the hang of it because they recognize quickly that when they do the trick they get the treat. This makes the training pretty simple, and you can use simple commands as a gateway to other tricks. One example might be using the command 'down' instead of 'play dead'. This will be a good starting point, and eventually you can move on to 'play dead'. 'stay', 'come', and 'sit' will also come naturally to the dog once a little bit of practice is done.
An alternative way to get your dog's undivided attention when working on some tricks is to use a favorite toy. Using a tug toy or a ball your dog likes to play with, just outside of his reach, rapidly move it up and down encouraging him to jump while giving him the "jump" voice command. After repeating until he relates the command and hand signal with the act of jumping, dispose of the toy and use just your hand and the vocal command.
Capitalize on your dog's keen sense of smell... his capacity to recognize smells close up and at long distance is unbelievable. This incredible faculty can be used in teaching many types of "hide-and-seek" tricks and games. Again, using a favorite plaything or chew ball, hide it under a box or other object. Start-off just a few feet away and little by little extend the distance or raise the difficulty in stages, for example placing the box in a different room or up on a shelf.
What about giving you five? That's a great trick for a dog, and it's actually pretty easy. Most dogs have a tendency to give you their paw immediately, and you can show them your hand or "paw", and then say 'high five' as they give you theirs. After a while this will become second nature to them, but at first you will need to reinforce this behavior using a treat.
The dog will usually have no hesitation to hand you their paw, and because of this you will sometimes be able to do the trick without saying anything. Sometimes you might actually have to lift their paw up for them, and even if this is the case then you'll still need to give the dog some praise so that they'll be willing to do it on their own next time.
Once a trick has been learned it's usually no trouble to augment it. "Give me five" can without difficulty be expanded into "sit up" by slowly lifting the paw so that the other paw will naturally raise up. By then haging on to both paws so that the dog is in a "sit up" position, vocalizing the command and rewarding with praise or a treat, he will, with repetition, draw the association.
Training a dog can be fun, and it has a few other benefits as well. By training your dog and spending time with him or her you will create a strong bond. You and your dog will become very close and you both will be a lot happier!

For the most part dogs are enthusiastic to do what their owners want and try their best to please when it comes to receiving a reward for doing so. These are dog tendencies that need to be used when it comes time to teach them tricks. It makes sense to take advantage of their natural predilections. By building on these natural 'dog' attributes and behaviors in combination with rewards to develop pet tricks, the operation becomes easier than trying to teach a trick from square one.
Watch what your dog does for his own amusement. Does he spring into the air pursuing butterflies? Does he like to lay on his back with his feet in the air? If some kind of instinctive behavior can be fostered into an enjoyable trick, that will quicken the training process. Be ready to use a fitting hand motion and verbal command when this behavior is demonstrated and then follow with an instantaneous reward.
For most dogs there are dietary requirements that you'll need to pay mind to, and bearing that in mind you shouldn't actually give your dog an excessive amount of treats. Treats are a great way to get started, but later on the hand signals and some praise will suffice. When you get everything down pat, you can decrease the amount of treats or stop giving them period.
For the most part dogs learn very fast and they'll understand that a treat waits for them so long as they perform the trick when you give the command. Sometimes you might have to improvise, so for example after you teach them "down" you might from that position teach them "play dead", and you'll have to get the dog to associate the new command with the additional trick. After a bit of training you can use other commands such as "stay", "come", and even "sit" and add on tricks from those starting points.
Another way to get your dog's undivided attention when working on some tricks is to utilize a favorite toy. Using a tug toy or a ball your dog likes to play with, just out of his reach, rapidly move it up and down coaxing him to jump at the same time giving him the "jump" vocal command. After repeating until he relates the command and hand motion with the act of jumping, dispose of the toy and just utilize your hand and the vocal command.
Your dog's ability to smell is a huge factor in the training. One thing that you can do is play a little game with your dog that involves hiding a favorite toy or treat and then having them find it. You can start out by putting the toy in a close location so that it's easy for them to find the object, and when they become more adept at that you can hide it farther away so that they have to work for it. After a while you will be able to use this as a viable trick to entertain your dog as well as any guests that you might have.
Having your dog give you a high five is also great, and the good news is it's not a hard trick for a dog to pull off. The majority of dogs will just hand you their paw as soon as you show them your hand, but for those that don't there might be a little more work involved. You may need to teach them several times, and make sure you give them a treat every time they do it properly so that they know there's an actual reason to do it for you!
Quite often the dog will present you his paw at once. With some dogs you will have to help them get the idea by elevating their paw whilst using the verbal command. Bear in mind the need to praise even if you have to elevate his paw into position, then lower the paw back down and repeat.
After a trick has been taught it's simple to augment it. "Give me five" can without difficulty be expanded into "sit up" by slowly elevating the paw so that the other foot will spontaneously raise up. By then holding both feet so that the dog is in a "sit up" position, vocalizing the command and rewarding with praise or a treat, he will, with repetition, connect the dots.
Training a dog can be fun, and it has a few other benefits as well. By training your dog and spending time with him or her you will create a strong bond. You and your dog will become very close and you both will be a lot happier!

Asking your pet not to be able to go out to relieve himself for eight to ten hour stretches is a lot to ask. If you're a pet owner and work outside the home I'm sure you already understand this. This only creates stress for both pet and owner.
We all love our pets. But we both know that sometimes they can get under our skin. Think about all the times you've been home trying to get something accomplished when your pet is persistent in trying to get you to let him out. It's can be a hassle to stop what you're doing and take him outside.
There is a way around all these problems. A way that can lead to a better relationship between you and your pet. Yes, a pet door may be the answer to your problems. Just think, if your pet has the means to go out and come in when he pleases you won't have to worry about coming home and cleaning up a mess he left on the floor. Once he has the freedom to go and come as he needs, interruptions will be a thing of the past.
Pet doors are relatively easy to install but you must follow directions and be handy with tools. You can always have a handyman do the installation fairly cheaply.
Before getting your pet door you will need some basic information. The height and width of your pet, What type of pet door is best for you. Patio pet door, electronic, or wall. There are many varieties available for you to choose from.
While looking for your new pet door keep in mind how difficult it will be to install as some are more difficult than others. In any event you may just want to ask for the help of a neighbor or friend or the services of a handyman.
As with most everything pet doors are designed to fit individual needs and desires. Your final decision should take your own needs into consideration. While doing my homework I found the electronic pet door offered many advantages other types just couldn't match.
Some pet doors do not allow for the safety and security of an electronic pet door. With the latter the door is sealed except when your pet needs to go in or out. Thus strays and other undesirables are kept out saving you a lot of headache should a squirrel or possum get in. Because it is tightly sealed it also saves energy consumption.
Once you've trained your pet to use the pet door both you and your pet will enjoy a whole new world of freedom.

A dog is not naturally stubborn, but he definitely does not understand what he needs to do. That is the reason why it is necessary for the owner to establish that he is the alpha in the house. This enforcement of proper behavior can be done by being firm and patient. And that can be seen when trying to enforce the command of 'come'.
It's in their nature for dogs to probe their surroundings. They will smell anything and everything, dig up, turn things over, and snatch little items. When doing a teaching session diminish any distractions by trying to be as far away from other people, aninmals, and voices as practical. It's a good idea to use an area that is clear of obstructions or a room without small objects on the floor.
Be sure to take full advantage of any spontaneous behavior you see. For instance when you observe the dog coming toward you, give a voice command along with a hand gesture to reinforce this behavior. Try to use a word and signal that you don't normally use during your training sessions.
Put the dog in a sitting position facing you. Reinforce the command of 'stay' as you move away. Use hand gestures and voice commands. Praise the dog if the behavior is correct. Do not reward the dog for an incorrect or partial response.
Keep repeating this, as you move back. If your dog comes towards you too quickly, use 'sit/stay' commands again. If the dog does not move try coaxing with treats or toys.
Reluctant or slow learners might need collar training or leash training. Put the dog in the sit and stay position. Start moving away, letting the leash go slack. If the dog does not obey you, tug the leash gently with the appropriate hand and voice command.
For a dog that comes too early, use a long rope or leash and wrap it around a stake or a tree. If the dog starts to respond too early pull the cord as you vocalize the "stay" command. If there are no trees available, use a friend to help with the session. The detrimental part about using someone else during the session is the dog can become confused about who they should listen to. It's always best if they just focus on one person.
Consistence as well as patience is necessary during training sessions. Human induced commands like sit, stay and come are not naturally understood by dogs. Yelling at the dog when it makes errors or does not obey your orders is quite a counterproductive exercise. You have to establish your alpha status by your body posture, a firm voice, and your patience while you wait for it to obey you. Physical leading and restraint is not such a helpful technique.
Many dog breeds are quite willing to be trained, and respond very positively to quick praise, for proper and correct behavior. If necessary, you have to show that you are the stubborn one waiting for them to 'come', instead of your going to them.

It is the ambition of every dog owner to have a well-trained dog. However, many dog owners do not take into account the amount of effort and time which is needed to train a dog properly. That is the reason why a number of mistakes are made which could be easily avoided with a little bit of common sense and effort.
Dogs are definitely not furry babies and children. Even though an average dog has an IQ of a 2-year-old human child, there are fewer similarities and more differences between dogs and humans. A dog does not understand reasoning, cause and effect, and processing language systematically.
That is why plenty of new dog trainers are extremely frustrated when they suppose the dog is ignoring their command, which is being repeated again and again. Many owners consider a dog to be stubborn on one day when he obeyed his master's commands the previous day. But the owners do not take into consideration that the dog does not understand the command so he does not know how to respond.
Many times, humans are surprised at dogs acting stubbornly. But their pet may have failed to associate yesterday's rewards for obeying the call, "come" with today's "come" because he did not connect the two in his mind. Some possible reasons and explanations based on how dogs learn have been suggested.
A dog trainer is going to need a lot of patience. You will need to repeat those commands continuously and again and again. Be ready not to get 100% results every time. Many dogs need more than 2 years of training to get past the simple basic and easy to understand commands.
Don't forget that patience means that you restrain your temper when what you really want is to smack or yell at your dog. It's common to think about taking the easy route of physical punishment as the first option for altering the dog's behavior. However, this should be reserved for only the most severe situations. The dog doesn't really understand why they're being swatted. This will not result in confidence, but to the contrary fear.
Dogs, like humans, are more ready to follow people whom they like and trust instead of people whom they fear. It is only when they have no choice that they follow a person whom they fear. A dog is going to endure its punishment without understanding the reason behind it. And that is just one important reason why physical punishment should not be used for training dogs.
Here's how NOT to Instruct your dog: - Fail to remember that your dog has a nature different from yours and speak to them like they were people. - Believe that a dog can connect events across time and circumstances and come to the same conclusion as you. - Get angry and irritable when they don't behave as you expect them to. Swat them for not behaving the way you want.
These methods are completely useless and are going to result in a frustrated dog owner and an unstable and fearful pet. So, to make sure that you do not get these results, change YOUR behavior before you try changing your dog's behavior.

As a dog owner you want to provide as best you can for him and make appropriate decisions for his ultimate comfort and safety. This should also include picking quality dog bedding from amongst all the options that are open to you.
There are many things to consider together with the size of your dog, the age, and fitness of your k9 friend and his resting routines.
After playing fetch, running with or walking your dog does he seem excessively fatigued or sore? If so you many want to consider buying him orthopedic dog bedding. These types of beds provide the most cushioning and bracing for old or tired joints.
Dogs who like to spread out, sleep on their backs or in other strange positions will often enjoy the exceptional relieve and support of the memory foam found in some orthopedic beds. These dog beds cushion your canine companion's joints comforting him and helping him to have a better rest.
Sofa or couch types of dog beds, like orthopedic beds are great for dogs who can never seem to find a place that is comfortable for them. Some times they need the extra thick padding that this dog bedding provides. These beds also allow plenty of room for lounging and stretching out the way many dogs are prone to.
Have you ever found your dog sleeping with his chin propped up on a pillow, a balled-up throw rug, or the couch arm rest? What he needs is a Bolster bed style of dog bedding. The bolster is just a higher pillow attached to and enclosing the dog bed that gives him support for his head.
Observe your dog, his habits, likes an dislikes, his resting and sleeping positions, etc. This will help you to decide what type of dog bedding design to buy. To come up with the best size to buy simply measure your dog when he is sleeping and add nine to twelve inches to his length and width.
Don't forget to think about where your dog most likes to relax. If he's an outside dog much of the time there are also outdoor dog beds available. Outdoor dog beds offer weather proof fabric protecting them from the rain and are also excellent for those pets with urinary problems or when camping, hunting, boating, on the patio, deck or in the garage.
Having taken the time to prepare yourself with this advice, it is time to acquire the proper dog bedding for your dog. Your dog looks to you for its health and comfort. Purchase a well made dog bed for your k9 friend, as it is money well spent that will help in maintaining the comfort, happiness, and health of your closest bosom buddy.

The jaw muscles of a dog are some of the strongest muscles in the animal kingdom. The Golden retriever, which is just average sized can strip and tear apart a thick Rawhide bone in just a couple of minutes. And that is why it is a pity that they can treat furniture the same way.
Different breeds will have different tendencies to chew and that is why owners need to know their own breed's behavior patterns. However, mostly all dogs will chew on objects in and about the house. This is why it is important to focus their attention on objects intended for them. Still, making the dog do this can be very difficult.
Puppies and younger dogs definitely do not discriminate between whatever they chew. However, owners can train dogs in such a manner that they do not chew on objects which Owners want them to keep away from.
This can be done by making sure that an object that might cause temptation is put away from the dog's reach. That is also why dogs should not gain easy access to laundry and items like shoes to chew upon. Another good idea is to keep the dog's toys away from children's toys.
One can also keep a large number of attractive toys at different locations, both indoors and outdoors, which can be chewed by the dog. Some of these items may include hard rubber, plastic bones, and rawhide bones according to the breed one has. It is not suggested to give a real bone like a chicken bone to a dog, because it might splinter and cause internal injuries.
Nevertheless, there are plenty of toys made especially for dogs and some of them have treats in hollow interiors. A dog needs to work really hard to get to the treat and not only is it going to have a good physical and mental workout, but it is going to get a treat reward at the end of the activity.
One can also admonished the dog firmly especially when it decides to chew upon unsuitable objects. However, yelling or sharp physical punishment is not desirable. So instead of yelling at one's dog, one needs to vent that anger and frustration somewhere else. That is not easily done, but has to be followed, for a harmonious relationship between the pet and the master.
The development of specific habits can be done by leashing the dog. Then an unsuitable object has to be placed near the dog. The moment, the dog approaches it, the leash should be jerked sideways, and No said very firmly.
Remember that the leash always has to be jerked sideways, instead of the neck being yanked back. The muscles of the neck are strong, but the throat can be bruised easily. The jerking movement is not a punishment, but reinforcement.
A dog may have the tendency of chewing objects found outside like fences, chairs, plants and other items. Such behavior can be contained by coating homemade mixtures like cayenne pepper, upon the surfaces which the dog likes to chew. Some commercial products also have bitter apple, which discourages the dog from chewing any surface.
Successful dog training can only be done with consistency, patience and a lot of persistence. The idea behind stopping chewing is not to start a new behavior pattern, but to "suppress" a natural behavior pattern.
Often, redirecting the dog to acceptable objects is the best bet since it is impossible to eliminate the dog's instincts. That is why it is necessary to be calm and vigilant. Keep your cool even when the dog chews on the new carpet. Objects can be replaced. A good relationship with a pet cannot.

Have you been entertaining the thought of bringing a guinea pig home to stay? Are you curious about the things you'll need for your new pet? Could it be that your looking to make some improvements to an existing habitat? Whatever the case may be, this article will not only lend some simple and smart ideas and about guinea pig supplies, but also some tried and tested techniques that get favorable results.
Cavys(another name for guinea pigs) are often thought of by some as being difficult to care for. Don't believe it for a minute! Looking after your guinea pig(s) can be trouble free with the right set-up and day to day care.
This article is aimed at raising your first pet(s), but perhaps the current or seasoned owner will learn something new to aid their pet(s).
A good place to begin would be with:
Habitat. Hutches and cages with six sides are best. Well ventilated wire types with large access doors and a slide out bottom panel will make cleaning duties a snap. Guinea pigs require about 7 1/2 square feet of living space, and at least 10 square feet if your raising two. A cage that measures 4 feet by 3 feet would be ideal for two piggies. Hutches with wired floors or bottoms are not recommended as they can cause injuries and are very difficult to maintain. Closed in dwellings such as wooden crates or aquariums are subject to rapid growth of bacteria and should not be used. A good cage or hutch can be purchased from pet stores that stock guinea pig supplies.
Litter material. Timothy hay, care fresh, crown pellets and aged newspaper shredding work best. Mixing two or all of this bedding is fine. An even layer should be spread about the catch tray to absorb urine and feces. Day to day spot cleaning of soiled areas is best. Change the entire bedding every ten days. Wash and disinfect the catch tray at least every three weeks. Maintaining a clean cage will greatly reduce the risk of health issues for your cavy.
Water container. Bottles that attach to the cage with the dispenser at the bottom work best. A single cavy should have a quart sized bottle available. Larger bottles for two cavys, or 2 separate bottles will keep your little fur balls hydrated. Keep it filled and change it often. Using a bowl as the only option for water is not a good idea, as waste will quickly contaminate the drink.
Food Bowl. A variety of shapes and sizes are available. A 32 ounce bowl will suffice for most. You may choose to use two bowls, one for dry food, and one for wet. Hanging pellet dispensers are a good idea as well.
A hiding space. An important part you need to include with your guinea pig supplies is a safe spot where your cavy can duck out of sight. This is an absolute must and provides a sense of security for your pet. Whether it be a shoe box with a hole in it or a fancy three level guinea pig penthouse.
Food. A rule of thumb for a proper cavy diet should be 75% dried food and 25% wet food. Dried foods are mostly hay and guinea pig food pellets that consist of 20% crude protein and 16% fiber at the minimum. These pellets should also contain vitamin C. Wet foods are fruits and vegetables.I will list just a few of the wet foods that are safe for piggies. Spinach, tomatoes, kale, loose leaf lettuce, broccoli, parsley, alfalfa, apples, oranges, kiwi and bananas. Some things you should never feed your pet include all meats, dairy products, potatoes, corn, never sugar, beans, celery, tomato leaves, iceberg lettuce. A surplus of fruit and veggies can lead to the dreaded diarrhea, and diarrhea can kill your pet quickly. Adhere to the 75/25 rule for proper digestive health.
First Aid Supplies. Small injuries can be easily dealt with, while larger wounds should be examined by a trained Veterinarian. For small injuries you will need hydrogen peroxide, tweezers, a flashlight, cotton balls and swabs, and a saline solution for minor eye irritations.
This should give you an idea of what guinea pig supplies you need to get started. I hope you found this useful. I wish you and your cavy all the best!

Have you ever thought of owning freshwater fish? Before you go out buying freshwater fish, you will need a freshwater fish aquarium set up. You do not want to just buy any freshwater fish aquarium either. There are many factors you must consider.
You need to do some research before you buy a freshwater fish aquarium. For example, you need to know the right size aquarium, what to put in your aquarium, and how to clean your aquarium.
The first step in buying a freshwater fish aquarium is to figure out the right size of the aquarium. Not only do you need to consider how much swimming area your freshwater fish will need, but you also have to consider how much space in your house is available for installing an aquarium. Do not just estimate the amount of space you need. Get a ruler and measure the exact space needed.
Figure out what you will put in your freshwater fish aquarium. Put some plants and other small figures for eye appeal. Make sure the fish you buy will not eat the plants.
Research into the type of fish you want to put in your freshwater fish aquarium. You have to be very careful and not put predator and prey fish in the same tank. It would be a great waste of money if your fish ate all the other fish.
You should also research on how to clean your freshwater fish aquarium. Algae can grow in your aquarium and you have to have a method for getting rid of that. You could put algae eating fish in your freshwater fish aquarium to take care of the issue. You can also use a filter.
Another way you can clean the tank is by putting in plants. Not only will the plants help make the freshwater fish aquarium look good, but it will clear out the nitrates in the tank.
Setting up a freshwater fish aquarium is not simple task. If you do your research you should be able to set one up easily though.

Betta fish are a perfect start for anyone who wishes to own tropical fish. They are beautiful and taking care of them is far from difficult. Another great thing about the Betta Splendens is that they do not require too much space, which means you won't need to buy a large tank, at least in the beginning.
To ensure the well being of your betta the water's temperature should be kept at the level of about eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Specific betta fish food will also have to be provided. The food usually comes as pellets or flakes, and may also contain special additives meant to improve the color of the fish.
You will probably have to change the water in the tank approximately once a week, though with a filter installed that period may be a bit longer. As betta fish do not require large tanks, the process of replacing water does not take too long most of the time.
A great many people believe that betta fish cannot be retained with other fish or marine life, but this is not the case, even though you do have to be mindful what type you decide to join your betta in its tank. Naturally, setting a female betta in the aquarium with the male is not likely to produce a problem and other good fish include tiny fish that don't have large or flashy tails. You can even add a snail, for instance, the large apple snail.
It is important to remember nonetheless that setting a male in the same tank with a female will result in a large number of extra bettas. It is the truth though, that you cannot keep two male bettas together - even placing them in bowls close to each other creates exhibits of hostility.
You can add different ornaments to the tank, as well as crushed rock if needed. The betta should feel comfortable in the aquarium, which should be a place where it can swim around, play or hide whenever it wants to.
Betta fish are perfect for anyone who is hoping to begin in tropical fish maintaining as they are simple to look after and do not call for a lot of care. Nor do they call for a big amount of room and can manage without a lot of items that other varieties of tropical fish can't do without. When thinking of a betta or creating a habitat, consider having additional kinds of smaller fish that that don't have display signals such as flashy tails.
