Reevaluation is being done for portrait photography. An artist whose work is currently being displayed at the Pittsburgh gallery tells us that his work is driven by his reaction toward the nature of traditionally being confrontational in portraiture. It took a team effort to create 13 portraits of creative people living in the city of Pittsburgh. Each sitter is given a large degree of independence in choosing where he or she is to be photographed and is free to make any number of suggestions. This already differs from the usual practice in the profession.

There are no ideas for a project that are preconceived by this artist. Essential to the collaborative effort is a preliminary in which the photograph is conceptualized. A suitable setting is the next thing an artist looks for, often aided by the sitter. Sets are usually constructed, and they resemble confined cell like structures.

For the photograph, a writer chose a bar scenario and a sculptor chose to be seen with his work. Bridges was a suggested site for a photograph, but in the actual photographs, it came out too weak.

He is able to create complex and difficult lighting effects in his photographs, which displays his great skill. The effects are not extra features added to the photograph during developing and printing. The spellbinding effects of color he makes are produced by combining colored gels with lighting equipment. The duration of exposure for these photographs is tedious. The exposure time for the nocturnal portrait of someone outside a bar was long enough for the sitter to actually walk in and out of the camera's range.

He could come back tracing letters with a wand of light in the air, eerily captured by the camera. During the exposure people entered and left the bar, leaving little or no trace of their presence on the film. Photographs taken at night in the garden of a factory show that much can be appreciated in the simplicity of lighting.

There is a sense of professionalism that he brings out of his work, never mind that he actually just learned photography on his own. Sometimes it seems that he wants to exert control over his work and this becomes an obstacle to collaboration. The artist still decides on the final outcome. No amateur printing was done for these reversal prints which are now on display.
