In an attempt to rid of the fleas off my cat, I used a bit of an over the counter flea remedy. I by mistake used the remedy made for my dog, and for the next three days was not certain if, my cat would live. Fleas are a huge bother, and also having fleas can influence the health of your animal. You have to be cautious, nonetheless, to respond appropriately.

WHAT KIND OF DISEASES DO FLEAS CAUSE? The most common result of fleas is FAD. This is abbreviated for flea allergic dermatitis. The most difficult time I had was getting rid of the fleas in my carpet. I tried everything! Nothing worked, but the good news is the least expensive solution finally gave me relief. Simply mix half table sale with half borax in a baggie (borax is found by the laundry soap), sprinkle on your carpet and any fabric furniture, leave for 24-48 hours and vacuum. Magic. I never saw another flea.

Sarcoptic Mange - Causes, Identification, and Treatment Among the conditions that can trouble dogs, mange is one of the more unsavory and distressing conditions. The most prevalent form of mange - sarcoptic mange - is due to miniature mites that eat under the skin of the dog and feed on the base of the hair follicles.

It is this destruction by an excess of sarcoptic mites that is the root of the discomfort, and treatment needs to be applied to the cause in order to attack the problem. Believe it or not, cats can get diabetes just like people do. It is just as life-threatening and requires just as much care. This is not to say it's hard to care for a diabetic cat; it isn't.

You may not notice the symptoms at first but as soon as you do, get him in to see his veterinarian right away. The first thing you may notice is excessive water consumption with frequent urination. He will also have an increased appetite, yet dramatic weight loss. You may also see lethargy.

After time, he may also develop neuropathy. This is a common side effect of diabetes. With neuropathy, a cat will walk on his haunches instead of his paws. This will distort his posture and give him a hunch back. He will also have difficulty making what used to be simple jumps.

In essence, what is happening with neuropathy is that the signals being sent from the brain to make the muscles move do not make it back to the muscles. So, your cat will begin his jump but the muscles will fail before the jump is complete. He will miss the target and fall. It is scary to witness. If you have not noticed other symptoms of diabetes but see this behavior, get to the vet as soon as possible.

The good news is that once the diabetes is under control, the neuropathy will correct itself. Controlling diabetes will require giving the cat insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. A failing pancreas raises blood sugar levels. Insulin is usually given via injections twice per day. There are insulin pills available but most cats will not respond to these. There are different types of insulin that use certain types of syringes. Your vet can determine which type is best for your cat.

Type and amount of insulin is determined with a series of tests. First there is an initial 'glucose curve.'This is just testing the blood every four hours to monitor the blood sugar throughout the day. Different insulin doses will be given and more curves will be done over time to establish which dose keeps your cat's blood sugar stable throughout the day.

Once the right dose is determined, the injections must be given regularly, usually twice a day. Missing a dose is not generally an issue, although several missed doses will cause sugar levels to stay elevated. The most important thing to keep in mind regarding insulin is that too much is even worse than too little. Too much insulin is extremely dangerous. Seizures and even death can occur instantly. Keep a record of shots given to ensure that he is getting his insulin an also that he isn't inadvertently given shots by two different people.

Be sure to keep up with regular check-ups recommended by the veterinarian. This is always important but it is especially important in the case of diabetes. Unlike humans or even dogs, the pancreas of a cat can actually 're-learn' to function properly over time. What this means is that a cat's pancreas may actually start to produce insulin on its own. If you continue to give insulin, your cat will get too much and overdose. Again, this can lead to death.

Living with a diabetic cat is not complicated. It just takes care and dedication to proper care. In most diabetes cases cats may not even require a special diet. Just stay on top of the situation. A little ear scratching will be appreciated too.

Mange is a problem that many animals experience in particular dogs and cats. It is surprisingly often seen, but is also easy to diagnose. Here we take a look at the way in which mange occurs, how to understand mange in pets and how it should be dealt with.

The value of knowing how mange occurs cannot be dismissed. Mange is caused by miniature mites that live in the animal's fur, and the female mange mite will bite into the skin of the animal in order to lay her eggs. This can cause an unwanted reaction in the dog or cat, and leads to persistent pain and rashes as well as other symptoms that we will look at later. The mites themselves have a life span of a short period but they reproduce at a rapid rate. It is when the mite population increases rapidly that the pet can become susceptible to mange.

Recognizing mange is relatively easy as the signs are visible and unusual. The first thing that may be noticed is more noticeable scratching, particularly in areas where the hair is at its shortest - these are where the mange mite likes to live - and this may be accompanied by loss of hair in these areas. While in only certain spots in the first instance it is often the case that mange spreads and in the worst cases can cover the body of the animal entirely.

Further symptoms can include lack of appetite, lack of enthusiasm and red areas on the skin - so called red mange - that are harmful and present great discomfort for the animal.

If mange is detected it is best to commence treatment straight away, as keeping the illness under control is vital to removing the condition. Mange is rarely a killer but can be dangerous if allowed to get out of control. It is also very painful for the animal, whose welfare should be considered at all times. Instances of mange transferring from pets to humans are known to have occurred and the most common form of mange - known as sarcoptic mange - is very contagious and occurs in humans as scabies.

It is so that mange mites are specific to different species - a dog mite will live best on dogs only, a cat mite on cats - but they can live for short periods on other than their natural host. For this reason it is best to keep uninfected people and animals away from those with the mange to be safe and sound.

If you are a pet owner and your pet is either a cat or a dog you probably already know these things. Most of the time pet owners tend to forget how important these things are so I am here to remind you.

If dog fleas are ruining your life, and no doubt ruining the life of your dog, you need a plan to get rid of them and keep them from coming back. Flea infestations have to be one of the most stubborn and frustrating things to deal with, but it is possible to rid your home and dog of these annoying little animals. To get your plan off to a good start, lets talk about the steps you will need to perform to be effective in killing fleas.

Before you even start, it's a good idea to get an idea of the scope of problem you are dealing with. Most people don't realize that the fleas living on and biting your dog (and you), are only about 5% of the total population of fleas in their various life stages that are in your dogs living space. This living space includes all areas that he normally frequents, including your yard, patio, basement, garage, car etc. If you fail to rid fleas in these other areas, or in the other life stages, then you are going to fail at getting rid of the fleas.

1 -Rid your house of fleas - first, take your dog outside so that he won't be spreading fleas back to the areas that you have just cleaned. Second, pick up anything and everything that is on the floor in all of your living spaces, including bedrooms, bathrooms, closets ? everywhere your dog has access to fleas will exist. Wash EVERYTHING - launder your clothes, sheets, dog toys, dog bedding, blankets etc. Anything that can't be dried, hang up to dry outside in the sunlight.

Go through the entire house and vacuum as thoroughly as possible, making sure to get under all beds, as close to the walls as possible, under and behind furniture. Also vacuum any upholstered items in the areas your dog frequents. Once this is done, throw out the vacuum bag so fleas don't re-emerge or hatch and re-emerge. Use soap and water to clean all hard surfaces, including closet floors, garage floors, and patio decks. Once everything has been thoroughly cleaned to get rid of obvious fleas, arrange to leave the house while you have a flea treatment. Make sure not to come back until the recommended time has passed and the treatment has been allowed to dry thoroughly.

2 - Rid your outdoor spaces of fleas - any fleas that are outside the home are a problem as well, since they will be brought back into the house again the first time you dog visits these areas. At the same time that you are having your house treated for fleas, it is a good idea to have your yard and any other outdoor space treated as well. Remember to pay special attention to dark humid places where fleas typically like to hide, such as corners, cracks, and underneath things like your patio deck.

3 - Get rid of fleas on your dog - now is the time to get rid of the adult fleas on your dog. Give your dog a bath with dog shampoo, and then thoroughly dry him. Once he is dry, double check that all fleas have been killed by going over your dog with a flea comb. It's probably a good idea to throw your dog washing clothes in the laundry, just in case some fleas jumped to you for safety during the bath.

4 - Kill fleas for the next 2 weeks to prevent re-infection - 2 weeks after the initial treatment, any fleas in the larvae stage which were impervious to the chemical treatment will now hatch and reinfest your home. After the initial treatment, make sure to follow up with vacuuming, floor washing, laundering and pet bathing regularly over the next two weeks, and your chances of catching young fleas before they have a chance to re-infest will be greatly increased.

It is vitally important to rid your environment of fleas. Failure to get fleas out of your home will result in consecutive flea infestations on your pet. Fleas will be living everywhere your pet has been. That means attention must be paid to every bed, every sofa, and every carpet that may have played host to even the briefest pet nap. Be methodical. Start with the bedding and work your way to the living spaces of your main floor. The more effort you put into cleaning your home, the more likely you will be successful in solving your flea problems.

Once you have eliminated fleas from your pet and your home you can think about taking steps to prevent further flea problems. There are commercially available flea prevention solutions and natural flea prevention solutions. For an avid dog-lover, the loss of his pet is the single most traumatic experience. If this occurs due to an illness, it becomes even more tragic. Kidney disease is one such killer. It can manifest itself in two ways. One is acute kidney disease and the other is chronic kidney disease. The former strikes suddenly whereas the latter takes effect over a period of time. Either way, the result if fatal for the canine and heartbreaking for the owner.

Kidneys are an important organ for the body - human or canine. They are responsible for ridding the body of toxins by filtration. Kidney disease causes the kidneys to function at only about thirty percent of their capacity. If the kidneys stop working, the toxins accumulate in the blood and get deposited in other organs. Subsequently, the dog dies.

Kidney failure in dogs stops the ability of the body to function properly. Toxins begin to build up in their bodies and once this starts, a number of symptoms and warning signs will more than likely become apparent. These two chronic diseases show different symptoms, the acute form can appear more suddenly. Often, dogs suffering from this type of kidney disease will possibly have become dehydrated. For the owner to test for hydration, gently pull on the skin of your dog's stomach. This should spring back. If it doesn't, there may be a possibility that your dog is dehydrated.

You may have noticed your dog not wanting to pass urine or no urine production at all. This is also is a warning sign that your pet may be a victim of acute kidney disease. This disease can lead to your dog having extremely painful kidneys; or you may notice the animal moving with stiff legs or an arched back. These symptoms are signs for any dog owner to watch out for.

In the case of chronic kidney disease, the symptoms are different and they occur over a period of time. The first indicator is an increase in thirst and consequently water consumption. This is a constant indicator of the disease. The dog might lose his or her desire to eat resulting in excessive weight loss over time. Contrary to the acute kidney disease, in the chronic version, the canine loses control over its bladder function. As a result, it urinates very frequently. As time passes, the process of urinating will cause extreme discomfort and become very painful. It is possible that there might even be blood in the urine or it may become impossible for the dog to urinate completely. Since the chronic kidney disease is a fatal illness, it is advisable to rush your pet to the veterinarian as soon as you see any of the warning signs such as problem in urination, vomiting, lethargy and depression. Any combination of these signs is a sure shot reason to go to the vet. If caught in time, there is hope for cure of this malady.

Kidney disease in dogs is serious and if the veterinarian suspects this he will normally follow four steps to determine if the dog has the disease or not. Firstly he will conduct a thorough physical examination. Secondly he will speak to the owner about their dog's relevant history, regarding symptoms and behavior at home. After completing the first two steps he will conduct two steps, a blood test and urinary test. Both of these are necessary as to do one without the other will give a less certain diagnosis. Both of these tests will confirm whether your dog has the acute form or chronic kidney disease.

Veterinary medicine has limited answers for treating kidney disease in dogs, but there are natural alternatives that can even reverse canine kidney failure.

An all natural flea collar can be created by rubbing a few drops of citronella, lavender eucalyptus oil, Tea Tree Oil, or geranium essence on to your pet's ordinary webbing, rope or cloth collar. A fashionable bandanna also works wonderfully. Re-apply this essence or oil every 3 days or as needed.

Another common sense and very helpful suggestion is to reduce your dogs exposure to fleas. You may want to begin by reducing the dog fleas outside your home. A failure to deal with these fleas will result in your pet continually getting infested. One method to reduce fleas outside is to install a Purple Martin bird house. Purple Martins like to dine on dog fleas, thus controlling the outdoor flea population.

Remember, fleas make your loved pet uncomfortable and they are no picnic for the dog owner. The best cure is an ounce of prevention. The best all natural flea remedy is to use an all natural flea control techniques.

Arthritis in dogs can be due to several different factors, particularly common are injuries, congenital defects and simply getting older, just as in humans. In dogs, even a minor injury can lead to arthritis later in life. The conditions to which some breeds of dogs are predisposed, such as hip dysplasia can also mean a predisposition to developing arthritis as the dog ages. Even dogs who have never suffered an injury in their lives may well develop arthritis as they age.

There are many forms of arthritis in dogs that can create pain. As in the case of humans, dog arthritis is an inflammation of a joint or joints. Anywhere a dog has a joint they can have arthritis. The cartilage in the joint may be inflamed, but it can also be joint fluid causing the issues within the bones. The main types of arthritis in dogs are osteoarthritis, immune mediated, infective, and idiopathic arthritis.

Arthritis in dogs is usually first manifested as a slow and gradual limpness in the limbs. Lameness will be the result and may reach the point where the dog has a hard time walking. This will lead in most cases to the dog being less active in play, walks and even moving about the home. Stiffness is likely to be more severe in the morning or after a nap but the stiffness is often minimal in the daytime, however.

A dog afflicted with arthritis will tend to feel pain if their limbs are touched near to where the joint is inflamed. There is usually swelling as well, and you may be able to feel this.

There is arthritis medicine for dogs that will help treat the inflammation. However, many dog owners find that natural treatments for arthritis in dogs are more helpful. Glucosamine for dogs and MSM for dogs are two popular natural ingredients for dog arthritis treatments (and arthritis treatments for humans, as well). In fact, many experts are of the view that there are three essential ingredients for an effective natural arthritis treatment - glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM.

Can you really cure your pets' flea problem using only organic remedies? This is one pet-care myth that has been circulating for many years and depending on who you ask you'll find a whole variety of different points of view regarding this question. The basic theory argued is that you can easily treat your pets for fleas without having to use any type of synthetic chemicals or medications. This theory originates from the notion that commercially available flea-care products can potentially harm your pet instead of help with removing fleas and ticks.

When first confronting your dogs' flea problem, you can actually find some success by taking an all out organic attack on the pests, though results will vary dependent on the level of infestation, the breed and health of your pet and also the environment that your pet lives in. Many pet owners think that going organic simply means limiting your options to giving your pet an organic-based flea shampoo bath followed by manually removing fleas from your pet using a comb + brush combo.

While it is true that using organic based products is typically a safe bet you can make when purchasing products you need to keep in mind that sometimes it might not be enough. If you only buy all-organic pet products, you may be worsening your dogs' flea problem considerably by setting these limitations. While an all-organic based flea shampoo bath is a good start, your pet will need more than just a bath to keep the parasites away for good. Besides, in order for this approach to work you'd need to give your pet a bath on a pretty regular basis which is a strain on spare-time not to mention water resources.

If you really want to keep fleas away for good you will need to combine an organic flea shampoo bath with other natural means to repel parasites as well. This means keeping the environment that your pet lives in flea/parasite free. You'll only find yourself frustrated with your dogs' flea problem if fail to rid your home of all possible flea eggs and larvae that are scattered about.

Important steps for a successful 'natural' flea prevention starts with washing your pets bedding with hot water, letting it dry in the sun completely before putting it back where it belongs. Make sure to vacuum your carpets and/or rugs, steam cleaning them if possible, to kill any growing flea larvae. You might hate to read this next part but another key step in preventing flea and tick attacks involves keeping a clean lawn, so don't skimp on your weekly lawn-mowing. What mowing does is it removes all possible flea or tick breeding grounds that might be lurking just outside your backdoor.

As far as manually removing any visible flea and ticks using a special brush or comb, this will only temporarily help ease any discomfort your pet is going through, it won't actually prevent it from quickly returning because the larvae and eggs will still be there. Those fine toothed flea combs never really pick up anything smaller than the half-grown bugs. I'd be a fool by not also adding that the amount of effort involved in keeping your pet flea-free by hand really gets tiresome by the third and fourth day of manual flea-removal (Yes, they really can come back that fast without proper treatment). Instead something to try is to add other organic solutions (e.g. applying diatomaceous earth) to prevent the possibility that the fleas will be able to lay any new eggs in combination with the flea-shampoo bath. Raising a puppy doesn't only mean providing food and loving attention to your puppy. You will be responsible for teaching the puppy how to behave well as it grows up. It just doesn't grow old and understand you on its own. You have to be teaching him manners that become his habit so that he would be able to live a good life with you in your neighborhood. There are many training methods out there that are written about. The general principles are simple and these should guide you to having the right idea in how to teach your dog right.

The most common way a dog owner would train the dog is to keep it company and let it do whatever it wants as long as the dog owner isn't bothered by it. This is sadly not enough and the owner is taking on a very passive position. The dog must realize that the owner can assert his authority and assume responsibility so it listens to him. Many owners tend to think that it's needless especially when they have small dogs. Even small dogs need to be taught some manners and often enough, the small ones are nasty and would nip at a child. You can't let the dog lead you. It should be following your cue, although not all the time. You should be the one dictating which behavior is appropriate in what situation. To do this, you can't just let your dog be around other people or animals when it hasn't learned how to behave well.

The other kind of thinking is reinforcing good behavior by giving the dog praises. It's nice of course. It does work, but you should also not overdo it. When you're training your dog, you are giving a clear signal that it did a good job but you're still in training. Excessive praising would come across as an invitation to start play time. That just takes away the focus from training. Other people also use treats as positive reinforcement. This works fine for dogs that are receptive to such a reward.

Giving treats is a classic and works pretty well with animals that exert a lot of energy doing tricks such as seals and dolphins but you're only teaching a dog to sit or behave a certain way around people or other dogs. It may not have a voracious enough appetite to find the treats rewarding especially when you're training it after dinner.

To get the best results in training your dogs, you have to let the dog know that you are the master. Dogs have an innate sense of social ordering. Once you are considered the top dog, it will follow you better. You should be able to give verbal or non-verbal commands and make your dog comply. To do this, it must be clear to your dog that you are the one that determines its welfare. You are the one granting it privileges in the house.

Diabetes is not just a human disease. It is also prevalent in canines. In general, the most afflicted with diabetes are older dogs and certain breeds such as Poodles, Old English Sheepdogs, Golden Retrievers, Daschunds, Miniature Pinscher, Schnauzer and Beagles.

Diabetes is defined as the non production of insulin with increased glucose levels in the blood. In order to remedy this situation, insulin must be given. Luckily, there is specific insulin produced for canine use.

Two forms of Diabetes:

Diabetes Insipidus: Is the lack of the anti-diuretic hormone called Vasopressin. Vasopressin controls how the kidneys absorb water.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM): Is insulin insufficiency. It is the most common and the most dangerous for dogs.

Diabetes is comprised of two types:

Type 1 - Is insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas is not making insulin at all. Type 1 is seen mostly in younger dogs.

Type 2 - Is non insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas is making insulin but the body is resistant to it. This type is mostly seen in older dogs.

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can be passed from parent to puppies. In addition, big dogs have a higher risk for onset of diabetes than smaller dogs.

If your dog is showing symptoms of this disease, a visit to the vet is in order. The vet will conduct blood tests to check your pet's glucose level. He will also do a urinalysis to check for kidney function and urinary tract infection. If your pet is positive for diabetes, changes in diet and getting more exercise will aid in reducing the symptoms and prevent complications.

Treatment:

Treatment generally consists of a high fiber and protein diet with fats and carbohydrates no longer being allowed. This may require that you feed your dog prepared meals. In addition, feeding your dog at the same time every day helps regulate glucose levels at a consistent normal range. If insulin is needed, it is always given after meals. It is very important to note that your dog must be allowed to have ALL the water they want.

Exercise:

Regular daily exercise at the same time each day helps to keep blood glucose down, thus preventing a detrimental effect of up and down glucose levels. Glucose needs to be consistently within normal levels.

Another risk factor for diabetes in dogs is hormonal changes experienced by female dogs. This can be alleviated by having your dog spayed.

Put on those running shoes and grab the leash, your dog needs exercise. All dogs, regardless of age, sex, or health level, require some sort of exercise every day. All ear infections, regardless of the cause, may have the same symptoms. Some symptoms to watch for at home that might mean your dog has an ear infection are:

Shaking of the Head

Scratching at the head or ears

Constant rubbing of the head and ears on the floor or ground

A prominent redness or irritation in the ear canal

Discharge coming from the ears

A brown or yellowish discharge present in the ears

Foul odor coming from the ear

Pan when ears are petted or touched

Veterinarian Visit - The Diagnosis

At the first sign of symptoms an appointment should be made with a veterinarian. It is also important to remember that you should never put anything into your dogs ears before seeing the veterinarian. This could result in additional symptoms including neurological which include head tilting and walking in circles.

For dogs that get repeated ear infections or have infections that will not go away with treatment, it is important to find the underlying cause of their problems. Some things are easy to figure out just from a physical examination. If a dog has a lot of hair in its ears, floppy pinnae, or small ear canals, a visual examination will show this. Tumors and foreign objects in the ear can usually be seen during a physical examination, too.

In order to rule out an allergy to food, the veterinarian will put your dog on a hypoallergenic food for a period of about eight weeks. During this time you will monitor your dog and keep a journal of any receding symptoms, increasing symptoms or no change in symptoms at all.

Atopy can be ruled out with either blood tests or with skin testing, similar to allergy testing in people. These tests will usually tell specifically what things a dog is allergic to.

Blood tests for endocrine related diseases will be performed. These tests show the veterinarian if a certain endocrine organ is functioning properly. If there is an endocrine problem, other symptoms will present themselves besides ear infections.

Treatment for Ear Infection

Once the underlying cause is determined, the treatment can begin. For dogs with food allergies, avoiding these foods is paramount. In dogs with seasonal and inhalant allergies, a combination of medications including antihistamines, omega-3 fatty acid supplements and cyclosporine will be prescribed and your dog will most likely be required to take them for the rest of his/her life.

Periodic treatment of skin and ear infections with antibiotics, antifungals, shampoos and topical rinses is usually necessary. The course of treatment varies for each dog and depends on how severely allergic they are and how well they respond to therapy.

For the most part, ear infections can be treated with oral medications and a topical medication placed in the ear. This treatment usually lasts two weeks, however some cases may take longer. It is highly important to note that you must also clean your dogs ears once or twice a week to remove medication buildup. This can collect debris which then impedes the healing process. If after the medication is completed the ear infection is not gone, an ear swab or culture may be needed for further testing.

Dog Ear Infection Prevention

Treat any underlying diseases that might be present.

Dry your dogs ears out after a bath.

Dry your dogs ears completely after swimming

Do not use water or cleanser in your dogs ears unless absolutely necessary and always make sure to dry them completely when you do.

Always remember: Keeping dogs ears dry is the key element to prevention and treatment of ear infections.

Certain breeds, especially smaller dogs like Yorkies are known to be more challenging when it comes time to housebreak them. House training puppies can be time intensive, and requires focus, but it will be well worth the investment. With the smaller breeds sometimes it takes a wee bit longer to develop perfect potty habits.

You should begin by first determining if the potty spot will be located inside the home or outside. People who live in condos and apartments tend to favor Yorkies since they don't need much space. You might find that your Yorkie prefers an indoor potty if he is resistant to going outside during cold weather. Another consideration to remember is that these dogs have small bladders, so they can only hold so much! if you are regularly out of the house each day for more than a few hours, you cannot expect your dog to be able to control his bladder for extended periods of time. In this case, choose a discreet area of your home for the puppy training pads. Otherwise, any small strip of grass should do the trick, as long as you use that same spot all the time.

Starting and ending the walk with an opportunity to go potty is the best approach until you begin to understand your little one?s potty schedule. Going to the same location is important to help your Yorkie associate that location as the potty area and if he can smell urine, that sends a signal that this is the place to go. Being a good neighbor is important, so always carry litter bags so you can scoop the poop. It's fine if your Yorkie happens to go while you are out on the walk, this is not considered an "accident" since it didn't happen on the floor or other unwanted area.

It's not uncommon to find that your pup refuses to go outside in cold weather, and then goes on the floor inside the home. Adapt to poor weather conditions by having a warm little sweater available. Otherwise, an indoor backup location may be needed.

Don't be afraid to heap lots of praise and affection on your puppy in order to help him learn proper potty habits quickly. Verbal praise should be given immediately and enthusiastically after they are done with their business. A favored treat such as a small piece of cooked chicken or dried liver offered as a reward may give him just the incentive needed!

In the same way that millions of people cope with diabetes, so too, does the disease affect canines. Specifically, the disorder is called diabetes mellitus (DM). An insulin deficiency prevents your pooch's body from metabolizing glucose effectively. There are two varieties of DM: Type I and Type II. The former is the most prevalent type (99% of dogs with DM suffer from this type) and occurs when the body doesn't produce enough insulin. The latter occurs when insulin is manufactured but your pooch's body isn't able to use it properly.

In this article, we'll describe the warning signs that may suggest your canine has developed diabetes mellitus. It's a potentially life-threatening condition, so catching it early is critical. We'll also explain how the disease is diagnosed and treated as well as what you can do at home to help your dog manage the disorder.

Possible Warning Signs

The most common symptoms of DM include a marked increase in the amount of water your canine drinks and as a result, the frequency with which he urinates. You might also notice that he is losing weight even though he maintains a strong appetite. Other signs include a general apathy or decrease in physical activity and the sudden onset of blindness.

Treatment After Diagnosis

The health of your pooch can decline rapidly once diabetes mellitus develops. His body's inability to process glucose effectively can lead to severe dehydration and other health issues. It is important that you have a veterinarian perform a full physical exam if you notice any of the warning signs described in the section above.

The veterinarian will ask you about your dog's eating routine as well as his elimination activity. You'll also be asked to describe any changes in his weight and disposition. Then, a urine analysis is performed to identify possible infections and review glucose levels.

Once diabetes mellitus has been diagnosed, your veterinarian will teach you how to administer daily insulin injections for your pooch. He or she will also create a diet and exercise routine that will help your canine manage his weight. During the first several weeks of treatment, the amount of insulin administered will likely change. Most veterinarians prefer to start cautiously with small doses and increase them gradually.

What You Can Do At Home

Providing care for your dog involves administering daily insulin shots (sometimes, twice daily) as well as any other medications that your veterinarian has recommended. You'll also need to be vigilant regarding your canine's eating and exercise routine in order to ensure he maintains a healthy weight level. If your dog experiences an insulin overdose (he might seem weak or disoriented), give him food right away.

As noted, diabetes mellitus can be potentially deadly. However, once it has been diagnosed, you can help your dog live a healthy, happy, and problem-free life.

For many dogs with mild diarrhea that are still eating, drinking and acting normal, home treatment may be all that is required. This can be done by providing your dog with a bland diet such as white rice and boiled, skinless, boneless chicken breast. Implementing this food in small portions every two to four hours during the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours of the onset of diarrhea will allow the intestines to resume a normal balance of enzymes. Once the diarrhea has resolved, you can then begin re-introducing their normal food in small amounts. If the diarrhea does not resolve or it returns after re-introducing the dogs regular diet, this can be an indication of something more serious and warrants an immediate visit to the veterinarian for testing and further treatment options.

Simple diarrhea in dogs is usually treated in several ways.

The first method is by antibiotics. Metronidazole is the most frequently used. This antibiotic helps remove any abnormal bacteria.

Medications such as Kaolin and Pectin can be used with metronidazole. They help firm the stool and stop diarrhea more quickly than it would stop on its own.

In some cases, Probiotics may be used in order to restore the balance of good bacteria in the intestines. There are several versions of which some are used to stop diarrhea and others are solely for prevention.

A bland diet is another option. By feeding your dog foods such as boiled chicken and white rice, the intestines are given the opportunity to calm down and readjust to normal.

Do not give your dog over the counter medications such as Immodium, Kaopectate, or Pepto-Bismol without checking with your veterinarian first. Most cases of simple diarrhea respond to treatment within a few days. If your dog continues to have diarrhea, you may need to re-visit the veterinarian for more testing or a change in therapy. Tar like stool or blood stool, additional symptoms and a dog that just doesn't feel well must be taken to a veterinarian immediately. If gone untreated, the condition can become worse rapidly, leaving your dog vulnerable to more serious and dire consequences.

Preventing Diarrhea

Here are some easy things you can do to prevent many cases of diarrhea:

Keep trash, human food, and medications locked up and out of reach of your dog.

Never feed your dog human food or table scraps.

Always supervise your dog while he/she is outside in order to make sure they are not eating something they shouldn't.

In order to implement a change to your dogs regular diet, you must mix small amounts of the new food with the old, gradually working your way up to only serving the new food. This gradual introduction allows the intestines time to adjust. In most cases a period of about seven days is all that is needed, however some dogs may need longer.

If you must board your dog or have them stay with family or friends, always bring your own food.

Deworming. It is important to do this every month. Most heartworm medications will also deworm your dog.

Pet owners everywhere are at one time or another faced with the issue of how to get rid of fleas! When your pet gets infested with fleas it can be a terribly frustrating experience for both the owner and pet. Our local pet food store sells an assortment of flea collars, flea powders and flea shampoo including Frontline for fleas. Even though the staff are helpful, it is pretty hard to know which product to use and almost impossible to know all of the active ingredients of these dog flea products. There can be some hazardous side-effects of those well known but potentially highly harmful dog flea products. The chemicals used in some of the household name products and major national popular brands on the market may be poisoning our pets and marginalizing our own family?s health at the same time. So the question is, how to get rid of fleas safely?

More often these days, pet owners are seeking natural or homeopathic alternatives to the issue of dog fleas. Some of the most commonly used natural dog flea remedies are outlined below:

1. Household salt. Sprinkle it all over the house and let it sit for a week or more. Apparently fleas don?t seem to like salt. Your dog will lay on the carpet and the salt will get on his coat. A short time thereafter the fleas are gone.

2. Talcum powder to treat dog fleas. Cover your dog or cat with baby powder and this will smother the fleas. This remedy is often recommended for puppies or kittens who are too young to be treated with any flea chemical. You can also use baking soda.

3. For the dog fleas on adult dogs, you could try an olive oil bath. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the fleas just drown in it and fall out. Start from the dog?s head and work your way back so the fleas don't move to the face where it's really hard to pluck them off. Then you just shampoo the oil out and the dog fleas will wash down the drain.

4. The Garlic solution. Some people swear that garlic is the best all-natural dog fleas remedy. Some people use a garlic pill supplement while others use freshly chopped garlic and mix it into the dog food. The fleas don?t like the scent emitted through the skin of the dog after he ingests garlic.

It would appear that there are many natural alternatives to treating dog fleas. These treatments will likely work best at the point of initial infestation. It is very common for any dog over the age of three to have some form of dental disease such as tartar or gingivitis. In fact, statistics state 85%. This is why dental disease is one of the most common canine afflictions. The most common symptoms include:

Bad Smelling Breath or Halitosis

As the progression of gingivitis and dental disease progress, other symptoms will appear. These include:

Bacteria from advanced dental disease can spread to other organs of the body such as the heart, kidneys and brain causing severe infection.

The Vet Visit - Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis of dental disease is based on physical examination. By opening a dogs mouth and examining its teeth, it is easy to tell whether or not calculus and gingivitis are present. While calculus and gingivitis above the gum are easy to diagnose, tartar accumulation and infection below the gum line cannot be diagnosed with a physical examination. They are usually diagnosed with x-rays of the jaw. Normally this is done during treatment because it requires general anesthesia.

To treat tartar buildup and gingivitis, your dog will need a professional veterinary cleaning. Performed as an outpatient procedure, it is simple and easy, but does require general anesthetic.

While under sedation, a dog's teeth are cleaned and polished both above and below the gum line much like a human dentist does for people.

When severe dental disease is present, a veterinarian will perform x-rays while the dog is under sedation in order to check for severe infection or abscesses. This allows the veterinarian to determine if a tooth or teeth must be pulled. In most cases, dogs do very well after tooth extraction and can still enjoy solid food.

There are some owners who choose not to have their dogs teeth removed. Instead, they prefer to visit a veterinary dental specialist to salvage a broken or infected tooth.

Dog Dental Disease Prevention

The best way to prevent tartar accumulation and gingivitis is with daily brushing. Use special toothpaste made only for dogs along with a soft toothbrush when brushing your dogs teeth. Crate training puppies is the quickest way to get your puppy house trained. The reason it works is because when crate training puppies, it's very easy to understand your puppy's eating and potty schedule, while at the same time making it very clear to your puppy where the toilet area is.

Many inexperienced dog owners are uncomfortable with the idea of crate training, as it might seem harsh or cruel. Dogs enjoy having a private den area, and the crate becomes a safe space for your puppy that he knows is his "home" and he can go to when he's tired. The way crate training basically works is that a puppy is resistant to going to the toilet in his own space, and will try to hold off on relieving himself until he can get to another location-this is why crate training works.

The crate needs to be large enough so your puppy can comfortably walk around in a circle and then lie down. As he gets older, upgrade to a larger crate if necessary. Crate training puppies works basically because dogs want to avoid lying in their urine so they hold off on using the toilet when in the crate for as long as possible.

Throughout the day, keep track of the times each day your puppy drinks, eats and goes to the bathroom. This way you can put together a schedule for toilet breaks around the times of day your dog might need to go. Typically, toilet times tend to happen first thing in the morning, after playtime, 30 minutes after eating, and before bedtime. For younger puppies a few nighttime time trips may also be needed.

The first thing you do when you take your puppy out of his crate is take him right to the toilet area. If he gets easily distracted, simply carry him straight there and set him down in the toilet area. Be prepared to watch and wait for 10-15 minutes, especially in the beginning. Once he has finished his business, immediately give lots of verbal praise and offer him a treat. If nothing happens, take him back to the crate, and try again in about 20 minutes. Repeat until successful, and then reward the good behavior with playtime, as well as lots of praise and affection. It is important to teach your dog that he needs to go potty first, then he can have playtime. This sets him up to expect and understand that he should get his business done and then he gets playtime.

Crate training puppies can take a lot of time and effort in the initial stages of house training puppies. However, if you do it properly you will be results soon. Your puppy will need frequent breaks for stretching and playing, but for the most part stays in the crate during the day during the training process.

Whenever your dog is out of his crate, keep your eyes on him at all times. If you catch him about to have an accident on the carpet, shout No! and whisk him up and take him immediately out to the right area. This can be messy and chaotic, but it is really the only chance you have to help him understand where to go.

When you are house training puppies, understand that accidents will happen. Clean it up quietly and quickly without letting your dog watch you. Use urine odor remover type cleaning products so your dog will not sniff out that area as the toilet next time. Overall, just remember that it will take time to get your puppy properly potty trained, so have patience and be consistent.

The Anatomy of the Canine Ear

Dogs, just like humans have ears that function to hear sounds in the environment. The difference is that while the outside of a human ear is straight, a dogs ear can be floppy or straight. This area is referred to as the Pinna. Its main function is to funnel sound into the ear canal. A dogs ear canal is "L" shaped while a humans is straight. A dogs ear canal is made up of the descending canal or vertical canal and the horizontal canal which ends at the eardrum or tympanic membrane. A canine eardrum is clear and separates the external, middle and inner ear.

Common Causes of Dog Ear Infections

The most common is an infection of the outside of the ear including the horizontal and vertical canals. This infection is referred to as Otitis Externa and is caused by three main reasons; ear mites, bacteria and yeast.

Ear mite infections are caused by the mite Otodectes cynotis. Ear mite infections are seen more in puppies than adult dogs, but any dog can get ear mites. A dog gets ear mites from other infected dogs. Ear mites can live in the ear and on the head and neck.

The bacterium most commonly involved in ear infections is Staphylococcus and the yeast most commonly seen is Malassezia. Bacterial and yeast infections are more common in dogs than ear mite infections. Even though there are only a few causes of ear infections, many things predispose a dog to getting an ear infection. Some of the most common predisposing factors are:

Malformed Ear Canal - When a dogs ear canal is too long or too small, this provides ample opportunity for moisture and debris to become trapped leading to an infection.

Excessive Ear Canal Hair - When there is too much hair in the ear canal, it tends to trap debris and retain water which leads to ear infections.

Swimming and Humid Areas - If a dog loves to swim, he/she can have water trapped in the horizontal and vertical canals which leads to infection. In addition, if a dog resides in a humid climate, the ear can retain moisture from the air, thus resulting in an infection.

Floppy or Folded Over Ears - Pinnae that cover the vertical canal can trap debris and retain water which results in ear infection.

Food allergies - An allergic response to a particular food ingredient can change the environment of the ear canal leading to moisture build-up and an ear infection. Dogs with food allergies may have other skin problems, too.

Seasonal or Inhalant allergies (atopy) - An allergic response to grass, trees, mold, dust, etc. can change the environment of the ear canal leading to moisture build-up and an ear infection. Dogs with seasonal allergies will usually have other skin problems, too.

Systemic Disease - Hypothyroidism or other diseases that affect the endocrine system hamper the immune systems ability to fight infection. When both of these afflictions occur, an ear infection is inevitable.

A growth or foreign object in the ear - A growth or foreign object in the ear can trap water and debris in the ear canal leading to an infection.

Over Ear leaning - If a dog's ears are cleaned too often, excess water and cleanser can be left behind. These two things can trap debris and eventually lead to an ear infection.

Premium dog foods are definitely better than your garden variety economy counterparts. But how do you tell the difference between the two? Is price the only indicator of how healthy the dog food is? Does a premium pet food have a different kind of label? How do you know what is premium?

Grains: Premium dog foods will use better grains (rice, oats) than economy foods (corn, soy, wheat). Why are these better? Because your dog can digest and metabolize the nutrients from these grains better. Grains are top ingredients in the economy dog foods, not in premium ones.

Some grains, such as soy, wheat, and corn, are also common sources for food allergies in dogs.When utilized as by-products, such as corn wheat gluten, they are nothing more than cheap fillers. Their main purpose is to fill up your dog's stomach so that he feels full. It's kind of like human junk food - fill your tummy with no nutrition.

Animal meat by-productsare another top 2 ingredient that just are not found in the best premium dog foods. Meat by-products are what is left from a slaughtered animal after all the human-grade meat has been removed - bones, feed, heat, lungs, brain, etc.

Meat by-products, like grain by-products, just do not have the quality and quantity of nutrients your dog needs. It is used as a cheap substitute for meat, with the dog food companies hoping pet owners don't really inquire about what a by-product is.

Premium dog foods almost always have a meat or meat meal as the first ingredient, unless it is a special need dog food. This is because dogs need animal protein - plain and simple. Meat by-products just don't cut it.

Will the price tell you if it is a premium dog food? Premium dog foods are not inexpensive - they just can't be, the quality ingredients used will cost more. What are premium dog foods and are they really any better for my dog than your garden variety dog foods? How can you tell what a premium dog food is? Is it listed on the bag somewhere? Is it more expensive? What makes a premium dog food premium?

The main difference between premium and economy dog foods is the quality of the ingredients and the amount of actual nutrients digestible by your dog. Ignore any of the fancy wording or delicious looking pictures on the bag of food. Look, instead, at the dog food ingredients first.

Look at the first 2 ingredients to see if you are purchasing a premium dog food. Economy dog foods use a lot of low quality grains and meat by-products. Premium dog foods list an animal meat as the first ingredient.

Grains/Carbs: Dogs are better able to digest certain grains better than others. Rice, oats, lentils, and barley are all easily digestible for dogs. Corn, soy, and wheat are not. This means less nutrients for your dog. And since economy foods list grains as top ingredients, this means the dog food as a whole is less nutritional than premium dog foods.

Another problem with the type and quality of grains/carbs used by the economy dog foods is that they are common sources of food allergies for dogs. They are also usually the by-products of the grain, not the whole grain itself, and thus has virtually no nutritional value to your dog. The grains/carbs really turn out to be nothing more than a way to make your dog feel full.

A meat by-product is not a top 2 ingredient in premium dog foods. Meat by-product is just what is left over after all the usable meat has been removed. This includes the bones, head, intestines, and blood.

Again, like cheap grain by-products, meat by-products are just not an equal substitute for real animal meat for your dog. They are used to boost the protein percentages in the dog food and make pet owners feel like they are feeding their dogs animal meat.

Most premium dog food brands will have a animal meat or meat meal as the first ingredient. This means the major ingredient in the food is an actual animal protein which will have the most usable nutrients available for your dog.

Is price an indicator of premium dog foods? You certainly won't find any 'cheap' premium dog foods - quality ingredients cost more money. However, you will find some 'expensive' economy dog foods. These dog foods have high prices to make you think you are feeding a premium dog food, when in fact, all you are doing is increasing their profits. Always look at the ingredients list to see what you are paying for.

Dental disease is one of the most common problems that dogs have. Up to 85% of dogs over the age of three years usually have some degree of tartar and gingivitis. The symptoms that owners notice most frequently include:

Halitosis or Bad Breath

Bleeding of the Gums

Display of blood on chew toys

As the progression of gingivitis and dental disease progress and become more severe, other symptoms will surface. These include:

Unwillingness to Eat

Excessive Drooling

Difficulty picking up food or chewing hard food

Discomfort when opening mouth

Enlarged lymph nodes under the jaw

Swelling on the face underneath the eye

With advanced dental disease; it is possible for bacteria from the mouth to spread to other organs and cause infections. Organs which may be affected include the heart, kidneys, and brain.

The Vet Visit - Diagnosis and Treatment

A general physical examination can tell a veterinarian if your dog has dental disease. The procedure is simple consisting of a simple viewing of the mouth, gums and teeth. However, tartar below the gum line cannot be seen so an x-ray will need to be taken. This procedure is generally performed during treatment as they both require anesthesia.

The best way to treat gingivitis and tartar accumulation is with a professional veterinary cleaning. This procedure is usually an outpatient procedure that is done in the veterinary office. It requires general anesthesia.

While a dog is under anesthesia, the teeth are cleaned and polished in the same manner that a human dentist cleans and polishes peoples teeth. The teeth are cleaned both above and below the gum line.

If severe dental disease and gingivitis are present, x-rays of the teeth and jaws should be taken while the dog is under anesthesia to have its teeth cleaned. This allows assessment of the health of the jawbone and root of the tooth and helps in preparing a treatment plan. In some cases, where there is an abscess or severe infection under or around the tooth root, a tooth may need to be pulled. X-rays of the jaw allow the veterinarian to decide which teeth may or may not need to be pulled. Most dogs do very well after having teeth pulled. A great many of them can even continue to eat dry food after losing a large number of teeth.

In some cases, owners may wish to not have teeth pulled. In this case, it is wise to see a board certified veterinary dentist. Root canals and other procedures may be done which might salvage a broken or infected tooth.

Preventing Dog Dental Disease

Brushing your dogs teeth is the best and most effective way to prevent dental disease. Always use a soft brush and toothpaste made especially for your dogs. What defines a Hot Spot?

In the simplest of terms, a hot spot is an area of skin that has an infection. Typically, dogs with thick, long coats, dogs who swim and dogs who live in moist, humid environments are the most likely to have these localized skin surface infections. In addition, flea or bug bites can bring on these infections as well. Initially, these hot spots occur when an excess amount of moisture remains on the skin changing the environment of the skin and allowing bacteria to be present and grow. The bacteria release toxins which then inflame the skin and cause it to be itchy. As a result the dog will chew, bite and lick the area searching for relief. This action unfortunately causes the infection to get worse. This becomes a vicious cycle that can enlarge the spot quickly. It is amazing to note that these spots can appear quickly, usually within twenty to thirty minutes. As mentioned earlier, flea and bug bites can initiate this process as well.

Hot Spots - What to look for

Hot spots are usually easy to identify. They consist of a well-defined area of skin that is very red and inflamed, hairless, and may be oozing or scabbed over. Hot spots are most frequently found on the rear legs and around the neck but can be found in any location that a dog can reach with its teeth or rear claws. A dog is usually unable to leave this area alone and will seem to chew, lick, and scratch at it constantly. It may be so itchy and inflamed that it will be painful to the dog if touched.

Dog Hot Spot Diagnosis

Generally, all that is needed to diagnose a hot spot is a visual inspection or physical examination.

If a dog seems to get many hot spots, some diagnostic tests may be needed to find out why. These include:

Scraping of the Skin: This rules out Mange

Fungal cultures to rule out ringworm

Blood Tests - These are used to rule or seasonal or inhalant allergies.

Skin and Blood Test - These are performed in order to rule out an allergic reaction to fleas.

Invasive treatment for fleas even if none are present.

Dietary food trials to test for food allergies

Dog Hot Spot Treatment

Things to remember when providing treatment include:

Stop the itching

Clear up the infection

Stop the dog from biting or itching the area

Keep the infected area dry

Initially, the remaining hair on the hot spot and the surrounding hair are clipped. The spot is then cleaned well with an antibacterial soap and dried. Clipping and cleaning can be so painful that a dog may have to be sedated for the procedure. This depends on how bad the hot spot is.

The infection is treated with a combination of oral and topical antibiotics. Usually, the topical antibiotic that is used also contains a corticosteroid to help with inflammation. To stop the itching, a short course of oral corticosteroids is used. It is important to be aggressive in stopping the itching. This makes the dog more comfortable and stops it from continuing to chew on the spot. This breaks the itch-chew-infection cycle, which speeds healing.

If your dog is unable to stop licking the area, an Elizabethan collar or lamp shade like collar may be needed. This is generally only needed for a short period of time as most dogs become comfortable within 24 hours. Within one week, the hot spot is usually healed.

Methods to Prevent Hot Spots

To prevent hot spots, several things can be done:

Use effective flea control on a dog and in the environment

Trim the hair of long and thick haired breeds during the summer months

If you can, prevent your dog from swimming

If a dog does swim, dry it well afterwards

Guinea pigs can be fun pets. To keep your pig in tip top shape it is important to know what makes up a balanced guinea pig diet. There are so many different diets available on the market especially if you include the different products that are marketed as treats. Guinea pigs do have specific nutritional requirements and it is a good idea to educate yourself a bit about what those are so you can feed your pig a balanced diet.

Young guinea pigs should be given as much hay as they can eat. They will need to be introduced to it but once they are most pigs love it. There are numerous different hay varieties on the market. Three varieties are timothy, alfalfa and mixed grass. Making sure that it is intended for food and not bedding is important. You want to make sure that there are no pesticides in the hay as they can make your guinea pig very sick. Hay is high in fibre and will help keep your pig?s digestive system in good shape.

Young pigs also need an unlimited supply of pellets. Older guinea pigs do not generally overeat but some may need to have a restricted diet if they are gaining too much weight. Younger guinea pigs need the chance to build up a healthy body weight and offering them the chance to eat freely is important for good health.

Pellets should make up the majority of any pig?s diet. You need to look for one that is nutritionally complete. The most important nutrient is vitamin C. Many pellets have added vitamin C but it can unfortunately lose its? strength over time. Always make sure you use pellets before the best before date so you can make sure that your guinea pig is getting as much vitamin C as it needs.

One vegetable to avoid is iceberg lettuce since it is not very high in nutrients. Leafy green vegetables including spinach, kale, romaine lettuce and parsley are good choices as they are nutritionally rich. Vegetables should be introduced one at a time and you should watch for any sign that there are loose stools. If this happens, you should not feed it to your guinea pig. Although vegetables are an important part of the overall diet you should still feed them in moderation.

Fruits and vegetables can be good for your guinea pig. They can add nutrients that cannot be found in pellets, and provide roughage and fibre that is good for your pig. You need to make sure that if you are introducing any new vegetables that you do so one at a time and watch for any negative side effects such as wet or soft stool. Any that do cause this problem should be taken back out of the diet. You should also be careful feeding fruit to your pig. They can be wonderful additions to the diet, but guinea pigs do have a sweet tooth and they may opt to eat only fruit if given the chance.

Fresh water is the other important factor in maintaining a healthy guinea pig. There should be fresh water that your guinea pig has access to at all times and if you notice that there is any dirt or debris in the water dish it should be cleaned and refilled. An alternative to the water bowl is a water bottle which is suspended from the side or top of the cage. It features a gravity fed spout which the guinea pig can use to get a drink. Keep in mind that if you opt to add vitamin supplements to the water the altered taste can keep the guinea pig from drinking and you should watch out for this.

Guinea pigs can be quite easy to take care of. They can live for years if you take care of them properly. A good guinea pig diet can be a critical step in ensuring the health and long life of your guinea pig.

My dog and I have a great weekend schedule. First thing each weekend morning we get up, have a snack, grab a latte at the coffee shop on the way, and end up at the dog park. I just love bringing my dog to the park, since it's pretty obvious that this is one of the highlights of his week.

At the dog park, my dog gets to have loads of exercise and socialize with other dogs. I, on the other hand get to sit on a bench, enjoy my coffee, chat with my friends or leaf through a newspaper. We both like the dog park. However, the dog park does have one distinct drawback. My dog has been known to get a good dose of dog fleas after a morning of playing at the dog park.

I can't remember exactly when I made the decision to stop going to the dog park, but it was an unconscious decision over about a month I think, as I was just dreading having to go through the inevitable process of ridding fleas from my dog and my house. Well, after a few months, I began to rethink that decision. Yes, my dog got rid of the fleas, but we have both noticeably missed the dog park. I decided that maybe it was worth trying to re-establish the dog park routine.

I called my dog groomer for advice. How could we enjoy our weekend trips to the dog park and avoid getting fleas? The dog groomer was full of good ideas. She knew that I was a believer in non toxic and organic living so I needed an all natural flea prevention solution. Thankfully, those solutions are pretty common and easy to apply.

I started to feed my dog a wee bit of garlic with his wet food every morning. The groomer told me that in a matter of days the garlic will start to be emitted through my dogs skin and saliva. The smell is imperceptible to humans but acts as a significant flea deterrent. She was right. At least, I have not noticed any fleas after going to the dog park. As an added precaution, I dosed a bandanna in some citronella oil and tied it around my dog's neck. My dog doesn't seem to mind the smell and it helps to repel fleas.

Fleas can be a nuisance. If you are going to bring your dog to places where they can socialize with other dogs, fleas are going to be a problem. Fortunately getting rid of fleas naturally and all natural flea repellents are safe and easy to apply.

The safe bet is to buy from a Breeder, but it's no guarantee that the mother was properly fed and supplemented, so that her milk provided your puppy with a strong immune system. The importance of real food and supplements is just as likely to be overlooked by a Breeder as is by the majority of MDs and Veterinarians in this country.

Just how high is the risk when you buy from a Pet Store and Rescue Facility? Most of the animals sold in rescue facilities were poorly cared for.
