One of the major selling points for GPS pet tracking devices is that pets are family members too and you would want to be able to locate a family member if they happened to get lost. Pet owners are often so attached to their pets that they feel the animal is just as important as one of their children or siblings. The very idea of the animal becoming lost and not returning home upsets them so much the pet owner rushes right out to buy a GPS pet tracking collar.

Another form of pet tracking is a microchip, which a veterinarian will inject into the pet this microchip contains information like the pet owner's name and address and any illnesses the pet has. There can be other information placed on this chip on a need to know basis. All this information actually can be found by the pet's registration number, which is found on the tracking chip being run through the pet registry.

Animals that wear collars, such as dogs, ferrets, goats, and cats are easily found by the help of a pet tracking mechanism that attaches to the collar, although you don't have to place the tracking mechanism there. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to keep a GPS pet tracker on a frog, lizard or snake? It is very difficult due to the fact there really isn't any area to attach it to and a collar would slide right off.

GPS pet tracking devices come in all shapes and sizes and have recently begun to get smaller and smaller. The more portable the device is the easier it is to use to locate the lost pet and get it home safely.

Wireless phones play a key role in one of the methods of GPS pet tracking. By using a cell phone the pet owner can log into the selected search interface as long as there is a cellular tower somewhere close by. Sometimes there may be additional charges for using a cell phone but the best thing about it is no matter where you are you can track your pet from your phone as long as there is a tower close by.

The handheld GPS device with a screen that gives the owner the location and data needed to find the missing pet is another of these GPS pet tracking methods available. This method is somewhat more expensive due to the equipment you receive but once the pet lover buys this device there is no more expense involved. The covered area is limited to an one-mile radius but with the magnificent screen and information it provides you will have your pet home in no time.

GPS pet tracking has the basic Internet web-tracking site as well to track the lost animal. The problem with this is no mobility, so unless there is a wireless notebook computer or internet access on the animal lovers cellular phone then it would take multiple people to pull off this type search.

Making the decision to buy a GPS pet tracking method that suits your needs is the only way to find the peace of mind you so desperately crave. The only way you are going to feel secure in the knowledge that your precious pet is going to be coming home every night one way or the other is by making that decision. Weigh out your options and find the solutions that fit best for you and your pet, then go out and buy the GPS pet tracking equipment that is right for you.

When the kids brought that darn little puppy home in a box you swore that you would not get attached to her. Now she seems almost as much a part of the family as they are. You just went to get her out of her kennel and now she is gone. If only you had bought that GPS pet locator you saw at the pet store last time you were there.

Another story of the usefulness of this device is found in with a pet who spends most of her day in the house with you. One day as you answer the door to let in a guest your precious pet runs out the door and disappears. Before you can call her back into the house, she is gone.

A GPS pet locator uses the same technology of a GPS unit in your car. It can give the location or your pet to within fifty feet.

While some of the units come attached to their own collar, others will fit onto your pets own collar. This allows them to be used on any sized dog. Earlier units worked best on medium sized dogs. The newer ones have solved this problem. As long as the dog has it's collar, you can find its location almost anywhere.

There are two types of services available for your pet. One allows you to set a boundary within which to pet can roam freely. If the pet crosses the boundary, then you will be alerted, either by cell phone call or by e-mail if you are not available on the cell. You will have the pets location and immediately be able to start your search.

The second unit type does not use the set boundary, but allows you to send the system an alert if your pet is missing. The service sends a signal to start the GPS unit and then the location is relayed to you.

You may find a few limitations to these units. There are some terrains where the units do not work well. Additionally, you must make sure that the collar fits your dog so that it does not slip off.

For most areas and medium to large pets, a GPS pet locator is a great device.

Some pet locators even have a button that a good Samaritan can push to let the company know that a pet has been found away from its home. This additional security measure is a great option for your pet.

Why not take a one hundred dollar preventative step rather than have to offer hundreds of dollars in rewards in hopes of getting your pet back. The GPS locator is a great investment that involves only a small monthly service charge.

Today we not only have to worry about a pet getting out, we are also plagued with pet thieves. Believe it or not, there are people that will steal your pet in order to sell it to someone else. The GPS pet locator makes it much easier to recover that stolen pet.

Why not give the best protection available to make sure that you can find a lost pet. That dog will come home with its tail wagging.
