Dogs and other canines are susceptible to a parasitic worm called heartworm. This parasite lives in the blood, lungs and heart, and can cause death if not treated. The treatment is also long and arduous, so it is much better to concentrate on prevention. Keeping your dog from ever having to deal with the parasite is easily done by employing a preventative such as generic heartgard.
The parasite that is responsible for heartworm is called Dirofilaria immitis, and is a worm like roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms. Dogs are infected via the bite of a mosquito that is carrying the larvae, and the worms then grow in the blood and lungs. Once they reach adulthood, they take up residence in the heart, thus the parasite's common name.
Sometimes, symptoms of heartworm do not become apparent until years after infection. This is because it may take this long for the worms to grow into adulthood and begin to cause problems. Coughing is the first, often-overlooked symptom. If left untreated, the dog will progress through bloody coughing, congestive heart failure, and onto death.
A blood test that looks for the larvae of heartworms is available and commonly used. If there is any concern that the dog might be carrying adult worms in the heart, an x-ray can be used to look for them. Some dogs do carry adult worms without having larvae in the blood, so this is a good tool that many vets use.
Treatment for heartworm is not as dangerous as it used to be, but it is still extremely taxing on the dog's system. For this reason, and the fact that damage done by heartworms can be permanent even after they are expelled, prevention is the most important measure to take. If treatment is necessary, the vet will run tests to make sure that your dog is healthy enough to withstand the medication used to kill the worms, and the expulsion of the worms.
Heartgard Plus for dogs is only one of several different types of heartworm preventatives on the market. These drugs usually come in a tablet that is flavored in some dog-friendly manner, such as beef or liver. Ivermectin is the active ingredient in Heartgard and generic heartgard, but this drug can have negative effects on some breeds, so do some research first. If your dog is from a potentially susceptible breed, consider using a brand with a different active ingredient.
Several types of preventatives are now available that help repel mosquitoes and prevent bites from occurring. These types of pet medicine, like K9 Advantix, are helpful in lowering the spread of diseases such as heartworm, but should not be solely relied on. Occasionally, a mosquito might slip past the preventative and bite your dog, and if the dog does not take a heartworm preventative, they will be unprotected.
Healthy, happy pets are our reward for being responsible pet owners. There is little simpler than making sure that your dog gets an easy K9 advantix blood test and a monthly dose of preventative, and if you do, the risk of them contracting a terrible disease will immediately go way down. Do your part to keep your furry friend healthy.
Generic pet medications are just as safe and effective as brand name medications, Save money on Generic heartgard at Royal Pet Meds.

After buying the new cat for the certain reasons you decide whether to declaw your cat or not. To declawing your cat may be due to different reasons. Let's take a look at a few of those reasons before making any type of decision.
One of the reasons to declaw your cat is the scratching problem that may occur. It has been observed that by the natural phenomenon cats have the habits of scratching. Even the declawed cats have the habit of the scratching. Due to this habit, the people declaw their cats to save their walls and the furniture.
Trying to get a cat's attention off of the furniture, may just prove to be the hardest thing, since you actually haven't provided them any alternative. In order to be successful, make sure that you give them something else to be playing with.
The materials, which are handed back to the door, for instance, are not able to satisfy. The post that you have must have a wide heavy base and fixed at its position.
These should be wide so that the cat will be able to fit both paws. If you have a scratching post, leave your cat alone as your cat can figure out that what is needed to do. If it finds ignoring then make a try with the catnip spray.
Do even scratch it, yourself or even by your cat because it will decrease the possibilities to be used by the cat.
After placing the scratching post if your cat continues to scratch the furniture, and then spray the grapefruit on the furniture and on the wall for them so they can taste and smell it. In this way, your cat will keep away from it because they no longer want to deal with the smell.
You can also use the strong citrus cents to keep your cats away from the furniture and the wall. This is a very easy trick to pull on the cat if they are giving you a bit of a hard time.

You can count on fingertips the number of people who would not like to have pets at home. Those who have grown up with pets will love to have them even when they have grown up and have their own home. If you have moved into your new home and settled down, maybe it is time to get a pet home.
If you are ready to welcome home your new pet, let us remind you that you haven't still decided on what pet you want. Are you a dog lover or a cat lover? Do you want a parakeet or a rabbit, better still a monkey may be. Think of the following before you choose what you wish to have.
First of all imagine the pet at home and see how many people in your family have the time to spend with it and may be take it around for walks a couple of times in the day. Also check out in the neighborhood to see what kind of pets the others have, so that you will not have a problem by getting one home.
Ask yourself frankly if you can afford to bring home a pet and look after it. It is not for a day but for several years that you would need to spend looking after the pet just like you look after your family members. You would have to incur expenses on food, medical care etc. So having a budget for a pet is one thing that needs due consideration.
The kind of pet you will want will depend upon the kind of space you have in your home for the pet to generally roam about. Smaller pets like cats and Pomeranian dogs will need very little space and are comfortable in a cozy small home but if you wish to have a great Dane or Doberman, you would need to have a huge compound around the house.
Finally once you have worked out the answers to all above questions, the last thing that you have got to choose from where you would like to buy the pet. You have choice of buying either from a breeder or pet store or the local animal rescue shelter. We would recommend that you buy from the local animal shelter because generally the dogs would have been domesticated and trained already. They would be used to living with families and would have been vaccinated as well as neutered while in the shelter.
Finally you have also got to check and see if anyone in your family is allergic to pets. If not, then the road is clear for you to go and get one right away.
A pet can bring a lot of cheer and sunshine to your life.

A lot of people nowadays are getting turtles as pets. One of the kinds of turtles that people love to have is the soft shell turtles. Agressiveness is innate among soft shell turtles yet, they can also be great pets. Soft shell turtles look like pancake because of their soft shells and flat bodies. In this article, you will know the basic things about these species.
Soft shell turtles belong to family Trionychidae. Soft shell turtles have more or less than thirty species. The most common species of these turtles are Apalone mutica, Trionyx axenaria, Apalone spinifera emoryi, Apalone spinefera and the Florida soft shell turtle or Apalone ferox.
Almost all soft shell turtles live in fresh waters such as lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. This type of turtles loves to live in rivers which waters move so slow and has sandy or muddy bottoms. Like ants, soft turtles also live in colonies and they love relaxing on sand bars and rocks that are located at the edge of the water. They also like staying under the sand or mud. May is the breeding month of these animals and they lay their eggs some time in month of June and July. Like other turtles, female soft shell turtles also make nest on the sand.
The most prominent characteristic of these turtles are their soft shells. Apart from these, they have oval-shaped bodies that are flat and flexible. Usually, the color of the turtles' shells is almost the same with the sand's color or mud. This allows them to hide and difficult to find. When they hide under the sand, they allow their snouts or long necks to pop out so that they can breathe. The shells of full grown soft shelled male turtles come in gray or brown color with dashes and dots. Shells of females on the other hand, are in dull color and have dark markings.
Soft shelled turtles are meat eaters of carnivores. Depending on the kind of species, they are capable of devouring larger fish that they can hold using their powerful long necks. Part of these turtles' diet is fishes, insects, worms, caterpillars, crustaceans and some amphibians. They also eat some carrion and selected plant material.
Soft shell turtles are great display animals. However, they are delicate and they need extra care when planning to have them as pets. They have soft covering that can be damaged easily by bites and scrapes. Their tank should be filled with sand enough to bury them and they should be kept in an area that is low in house traffic and noise. The water should be kept clean using proper water filtration since they are susceptible to diseases.
These are the basic information about soft shell turtles. If you want to know more about their health, diet and reproduction, you can make little search over the internet. Remember that these turtles make great pets if fed and cared for properly.

Things You Must Know Before Taking Your Dog to the Beach - Before you take your dog to the beach, you should know first the rules and regulations since not all beaches permit dogs. There are some beaches that permit it though it requires that they should be on-leash at all times. You are accountable for the actions of your dog and of course treat other humans and pets with courtesy on the beach.
Before departing, check with your veterinarian for any sun-related products for dogs like goggles and sunscreen. Although all pets enjoy some sunshine and fresh air, some are more sensitive to the heat than others. Dogs may also get a sunburn! Consult your veterinarian as to what would be recommended for your pet. Consider available shady areas at the beach you will be visiting. It's wise to carry an umbrella or portable shelter for your dog. Your pet needs a little break from the sun and the heat and might enjoy a nap out of the direct sunlight, particularly if this will be a long day.
Dogs will become lethargic with over-heating which means that extreme drooling can lead to dehydration. Dogs cool off by panting and puffing rather than sweating. For you to know if your dog is dehydrated or not, you just need to pull up a pinch of skin and if it takes longer than normal to fall in place this can be a sign be a sign that your pet needs to cool off. Be sure to carry plenty of water and give your dog a drink regularly. You can use a dog pack or vest to carry the water and the cup as well as a collapsible bowl is ideal for a tour to the beach. You might also want to think about adding your cell phone number to a water-resistant label in the collar of your dog. In case you become separated from your dog, you can be contacted sooner rather than later.
Consider your pet's paws and how hot sand and beach debris can be burning or irritating. You might want to think about using dog boots or paw-pad covers to protect your pet from the heat. Dogs take up and discharge heat through their paws as well; the boots can protect them from heat as well as in cold. Many beaches have sand fleas so talk to your veterinarian concerning flea care. Remove the flea collar if you normally use one. Most flea collars will not work once wet and can irritate your dog's skin. Sea lice and jellyfish may be a risk to dogs. Sea lice can cause itching and red bumps on the skin of your dog. If jellyfish are in the area, you and your dog should stay out of the water!
If you're taking your dog to a beach where she/he will be off leash, be sure you can be in command of your dog. Particularly for dogs that do not get to go to the beach very frequently since different attractive scents can take them away from you. Make sure that you know the actions of your dog when off leash. But keep in mind to not let your dog get tired. As your pet gets older, their strength and stamina is not the same as they once have. Keep all this in mind as you and your best friend enjoy a day or two at the beach!

If you have ever been to a Reading Vets practise with your pet then you will no doubt be aware of how harrowing this journey can be for both you and your beloved pet. Somehow, they just manage to have their sixth sense telling them exactly where they are headed and so your happy hound turns into a frightened mass on four legs.
Speak to any cat owner and they are likely to tell you that their normally sleepy feline will immediately disappear under the bed as soon as their cat box appears. They will then spend the next 10 minutes or so trying to coax them out without becoming too scared in the process. One way of avoiding this is to ensure that the cat box remains in full view and open at all times. This way your furry little kitty can come and go as she pleases. By furnishing the box with a blanket and some pleasant smelling catnip your cat will then stop associating this box with nasty vet trips and see it more as a pleasing place for a snooze. So when it is time to load her into the box she will feel a whole lot happier and not do a vanishing act.
Animals can and do notice our thoughts. They know when we are happy or sad, so if we are giving out anxious or stressed vibes then our pet will feel these also! Therefore, one way to try and calm down the situation is for us to be calm about the whole trip to the vets.
Some animals really do get rather het up upon visiting the Reading vets. If this happens then have a chat to the vet for there are many calming products on the market, which help sooth your pet and aid in the relief of nerves, fear and for those that need it aggression!
Ensure that your animal gets used to having rides in the car. By taking them on a quick spin around the block every now and again, they are less likely to associate the car solely with a trip to the Reading vets. Open the window, put the radio on, and make it a soothing pleasant experience for you both. Then when you get home again reward your pet with a treat.
In order to get your pet used to being handled by the vet, touch them as much as possible. It is also a good idea to get them used to being handled by strangers as well. So try and get as many people as possible to pet them. In addition, regularly handle their feet, ears, and mouth as if you were inspecting them. This will make it easier for the vet to do a thorough physical examination.
Following the trip to the Reading vets, ensure you reward your pet. Make a fuss of them and give them a treat.

Weimaraners tend to be more prone to separation anxiety than many other breeds, but a lot of breeds suffer from this and kind of disorder. This breed is known to become very attached and protective of their owners, and lack of the proper attention can lead to a huge ordeal. Weimaraner training to alleviate separation anxiety, can with time, and a whole lot of patience help your pet can find happiness and a calm state of mind in which to live out his or her life.
Dogs are pack animals. Pack animals thrive on the comfort they feel in groups, even if the group is nothing more than one person belonging to the animal. However, it's not always possible for people to spend twenty four hours a day giving their the attention it craves.
It's natural for dogs to feel a bit panicky when their owners leave them alone, especially if they're not used to being left alone. It's best to begin training as a puppy, so the dog grows up knowing that sometimes it's going to be left alone, but if the problem is with an adult dog there are still some things you can do to help the situation.
Developing a routine can help to ease the task of training your Weimaraner, but to make the process go fast and smooth the routine must be adhered to diligently. Finding your house in shambles can lead to a lot of anger and frustration, but with a positive attitude and a kind patient hand, anything can be achieved. Yelling at your dog may seem like the way to go at first, but this reaction will not help alleviate the problem in any way. In most cases, it will only end up making it worse. Scolding often scares the animal and encourages poor behavior. Although it may be tough, keeping a level head will pay off in the long run. To stop the repetition of bad behavior, you have to be the calming influence, and in return you will be rewarded with a calmer pet.
Your dog doesn't know it's doing anything wrong, and it will not understand why you're so upset. Trying to reason with your dog and explain to it that it has been very bad and better not do it again, will go in one floppy ear and right out the other.
The whole process of Weimaraner training to alleviate separation anxiety will happen in many steps. First with tiring the animal out thoroughly with exercise like jogging and running or even a vigorous game of fetch. Wearing the dog out will help it to become peaceful and at rest, this is a good time to give a treat to a bit of affection. Don't underestimate the use of toys and chewy items to stave off boredom and loneliness. In time your Weimaraner will become more at ease and comfortable with being alone. The entire home will be a more joyous and happy place to be once training is complete, but these changes do take some time.

The pets you keep also desire your attention and depending on how much of this you can give them, they will be more perceptive to you and be at your beck and call. Dogs are always willing to please their masters, and are keen to see that the masters are happy with them. This is why you need to know some of the ways to show your appreciation and love to your dog.
For starters, the dogs should be patted on the back and be held lovingly by the owner. The best way to do this and show the dog that you love him is by hugging or just patting him on the back.
Touch is not just a simple feeling, it goes beyond a mere stroking of the dog, it connects to deep emotions that help the dog to know that he is loved and appreciated. This is far reaching effects in that it can connect the humans to the dogs to express love in a way that words cannot since the canines do not talk anyway.
You can show the dog your love and appreciation which will endear him to you by letting him rest beside you and even letting him sit on your laps; particularly when the dog is still young. Pat the dog and hold him with friendly touch and he will always trust you and be obedient to you as his master.
It is always good to let the dog know that you are a true friend by patting him on the back even when he has not done anything special. This means you should not just wait for the dog to do a good deed before rewarding him with a pat; and make the point of stroking the dog when you arrive home from a trip.
Another wonderful way of appreciating your dog, even though most pet owners do not see this as important, is to take him for a walk constantly. Dogs love to go for walks, so they will really love their masters for taking them for walks. Let the dog go for jaunts and playful activities outdoors that you can do together.
Then the third thing is to give some dog treats to your own dog since they also get bored doing the same things day in day out. So surprise your dog by taking it out for some outdoor games, go out to visit friends who have dogs that your dog like. Also you could buy for them some special diet or dog bones to play with.
To really go an extra mile, you could one day think of getting a partner for your dog.
