Although some dogs are natural swimmers, not all are, which makes it important that you take the time to teach your dog to swim. Not only is it good for bonding but can be fun for both of you. Here are some useful tips on teaching your dog to swim.
1. Making use of a life jacket.
Using a dog life jacket serves two main purposes. Firstly it will give your dog buoyancy. This buoyancy will help your dog to float and make learning to swim a lot easier for him. It will also reduce the amount of fatigue your dog experiences and keep him warm in the water. Most dog life jackets also have a carry handle at the top. This enable you to grab the handle and help lift your dog out of the water. This is vital if your dog gets panicked or becomes fatigued.
2. Getting in the water with your dog.
Being in the water with your dog helps you with keeping a close eye on him whilst in the water. it very much the same way as if you were teaching a young child to swim. Being in the water at the same time allows you to encourage your dog more and guide them. It also enable you to quickly lift him out of the water if he runs into difficulties. Large dogs may need more than one of you in the water at the same time to help lift him out.
3. Start small initially.
If you have your own swimming pool, then this is an ideal way of introducing him to water. He can go in feet first and slowly move out until all his body becomes wet. Throwing your dog into water and hoping for the best is a very bad idea. This can lead to a life long fear of water in your dog.
4. Short periods of time.
When swimming, a dog uses a lot of energy and also loses a lot of heat in the water. Dogs that are bred to spend a lot of time i water usually have thick fur and a large. This minimizes their heat loss. To prevent your dog from developing hypothermia, keep swimming sessions short, dry your dogs fur afterwards and follow up by wrapping in a blanket.
5. Have fun.
Dogs love nothing more than joining in with his family, jumping and playing about in the water. Make the whole water experience fun. This can be achieved by playing games in the water, giving encouragement and even giving treats. This will encourage him to spend time in water as he will associate the experience with having a good time.

Choosing South American Cichlid tank mates is not difficult at all. There are a few things that you need to consider before you make any quick decisions while at your favorite pet store.
The first thing that you must consider is the size of your cichlid species. Obviously, don't choose fish or invertebrates that appear to be able to fit in their mouth. It is not fool proof, but it makes for a good rule of thumb.
Next, don't pick a tankmate that has the potential to be more aggressive than the dominant species in your cichlid tank. Take this for example. Angel fish and Oscar fish will make great tankmates when they are small. But as they start to get bigger, the Oscars will beat up the docile Angels.
Those are a few obvious points about choosing tankmates for your cichlids, but lets get to the issue of this article. So what are the best tankmates for cichlids. Catfish, that's right, Catfish. But lets get a little bit more specific. What about Corydoras. These little guys are some of my favorite tropical fish, and they make great tankmates for all sorts of cichlids.
When choosing corys , make sure you consider the size of your Cichlids. If you have a mature Oscar tank, choosing the smaller types of corys is bad idea. Your Oscars will love the snack and vacuum them up like skittles. Choose one of the larger varieties like Corydoras aeneus.
The larger types of corys like the bronze and green varieties, will reach full size at about three inches. So they should make good tankmates for even the larger types of American Cichlids.
Here is a very important thing that you must consider if you choose corydoras as tankmates for Oscars. Sometimes they simply don't follow the rules and do as they please. For the best results with pairing Oscars and corys, it is best to raise them together so they are used to having each other around. Here is a cory tip. Keep your corys in groups of at least six or seven. They are much happier in a group.

For any household which has a pet, you already know how significant they can grow to be in your family. One of the more common varieties of pets which you can acquire for your family is a bird. If yours is a family that has a lot of responsibilities and not a lot of time to devote to a pet such as the amount that it takes for a dog or a cat, then having a bird is perfect, because as long as you do just a few things for them they are fine.
However, like all animals, birds might get sick, and because they are less common than cats and dogs, and because you are going to interact with your bird much less than your cat or dog, you might find it difficult to tell when your bird is sick. Fortunately though, there are some things that can be done to help you to pay closer attention to the bird that will help you to be aware if it becomes ill.
If you are familiar with the song that your bird sings, then you'll know without a doubt when the bird is not feeling well. he method that a bird uses to communicate with the world it lives in is through singing. Depending on the time of the day and how the bird is feeling it will make separate sounds accordingly as you will see by paying attention to it. There are birds who have various songs for both the morning and the evening. Birds will often react differently with the diverse members in your family and make different sounds accordingly.
There will be noises that it makes when you change its food or water, or when you put something in the cage. You need to make yourself become aware of these differences in your pet as it is your responsibility as their caregiver. This will allow you to know immediately when something is various. If your pet bird starts making sounds that it has never made, or if it is reacting differently than it normally does, it could be a sign that it is getting sick.
Movements are also something that will change with a birds behavior patterns. The bird will develop patterns of the places in the cage that it likes to perch the best and the types of activities that it enjoys doing.
If you see that your bird isn't moving as much as it usually does, or is sitting on the floor of the cage instead of on its perch, it might be sick, and you should pay some attention to it. Also, if it is moving much more than usual, and trying to fly out of the cage, it also might be sick, and there should be something done about it. Don't hesitate to take your bird to the vet if you are in doubt.
It seems that it is all about getting to know your bird, and the single method that you could really accomplish that would be to spend a sprinkle of time in attending to it. A very wonderful means for you to interact with and get acquainted with your bird is through training your bird. Believe it or not, cats can get diabetes just like people do. It is just as life-threatening and requires just as much care. This is not to say it's hard to care for a diabetic cat; it isn't.
You may not notice the symptoms at first but as soon as you do, get him in to see his veterinarian right away. The first thing you may notice is excessive water consumption with frequent urination. He will also have an increased appetite, yet dramatic weight loss. You may also see lethargy.
After time, he may also develop neuropathy. This is a common side effect of diabetes. With neuropathy, a cat will walk on his haunches instead of his paws. This will distort his posture and give him a hunch back. He will also have difficulty making what used to be simple jumps.
In essence, what is happening with neuropathy is that the signals being sent from the brain to make the muscles move do not make it back to the muscles. So, your cat will begin his jump but the muscles will fail before the jump is complete. He will miss the target and fall. It is scary to witness. If you have not noticed other symptoms of diabetes but see this behavior, get to the vet as soon as possible.
The good news is that once the diabetes is under control, the neuropathy will correct itself. Controlling diabetes will require giving the cat insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. A failing pancreas raises blood sugar levels. Insulin is usually given via injections twice per day. There are insulin pills available but most cats will not respond to these. There are different types of insulin that use certain types of syringes. Your vet can determine which type is best for your cat.
Type and amount of insulin is determined with a series of tests. First there is an initial 'glucose curve.'This is just testing the blood every four hours to monitor the blood sugar throughout the day. Different insulin doses will be given and more curves will be done over time to establish which dose keeps your cat's blood sugar stable throughout the day.
Once the right dose is determined, the injections must be given regularly, usually twice a day. Missing a dose is not generally an issue, although several missed doses will cause sugar levels to stay elevated. The most important thing to keep in mind regarding insulin is that too much is even worse than too little. Too much insulin is extremely dangerous. Seizures and even death can occur instantly. Keep a record of shots given to ensure that he is getting his insulin an also that he isn't inadvertently given shots by two different people.
Be sure to keep up with regular check-ups recommended by the veterinarian. This is always important but it is especially important in the case of diabetes. Unlike humans or even dogs, the pancreas of a cat can actually 're-learn' to function properly over time. What this means is that a cat's pancreas may actually start to produce insulin on its own. If you continue to give insulin, your cat will get too much and overdose. Again, this can lead to death.
Living with a diabetic cat is not complicated. It just takes care and dedication to proper care. In most diabetes cases cats may not even require a special diet. Just stay on top of the situation. A little ear scratching will be appreciated too.
It is critical to be aware of what you should look for regarding diabetes symptoms and the impact on your health. The Diabetes Advice Online services gives you information and details on the steps you should take when you might have diabetes. Training a dog takes loads of time and patience. This is not something that you can achieve in a matter of days or weeks - it will take months. The trick to getting the most effective results from your little pup is to be firm with it but not deal out any physical punishment.
Becoming abusive with your puppy will do nothing but have an adverse effect in the relationship as time goes on between you and your pet.
Imagine a new born baby. Will it make a difference if you smack it when it cries and screams? Of course not! Like babies, puppies just do not get it and applying this type of punishment will only cause your pet to stay away from you whenever possible.
The psychology behind this is that dog when young, do not make the distinction between the pain it receives when you hit it, and the reason that you are having it punished. If it was biting on your shoe and you gave it a smack, all you did was to instill terror and distress into the poor puppy, without it knowing what it had done wrong. It might be a different case for adult dogs.
You might think that punishing your dog with a light smack is fine. It might not hurt so much but it will terrify the life out of the infant dog and if you continue to do this, it will eventually learn to stay away from you at all costs, and you'll never form a close bond with it.
Yelling at it is the next thing you should avoid doing as well. While yelling doesn't inflict pain, it does instill fear (if you shout loud enough) which is scary enough for a baby dog.
Besides being vocally loud, a more effective training method you should employ would be to speak to your dog in a very firm tone to get it to cease doing what it was doing. Then pick up your pup and give it a huge to give it reassurance and some love.
Teaching your puppy should be no different from teaching a child. Control your frustrations and never shout, instead be gentle and give it time to learn the difference between right and wrong. This is the only way to develop a great relationship with your dog

As many an animal lover would know, dogs are generally a happy, loyal, and lovable breed. Sometimes we hold off adopting a puppy because training her would require too much of an effort. Fortunately, there are simple dog training tips available that cover the basics and help get you started to a colorful and rewarding relationship with your dog.
First of all, you will have to set your leader status in the dog's eyes. Once he recognizes you as his authority he will follow you without much trouble. Establish this daily with regular routine that mirrors the animal world's system. Allow your dog to watch you eat first and feed him only after you're done. Don't walk around him if he is obstructing your path. Gently force him to leave his position by pushing him out of the way. As he acknowledges you to be the leader of the pack, the easier it is to teach him in the future.
Dogs can pick up your emotions even as you handle them. Use a firm and authoritative voice in training. However, it is also important to note that dogs respond well to positive reinforcement. Give him doggie treats every time he correctly accomplishes a command. If he makes a mistake, you have to correct him during the time it happens not after. Train him for ten to fifteen minutes several times a day and be effusive in your praise with his performance.
You will find that all dogs have consistent behavioral patterns that are a reliable index to their state of mind, so to speak. Happy dogs have wagging tails, a joyful bark and an open expression. Angry dogs will bare their teeth, snarl and tense up, ready to attack. Recognizing particular signs and correctly responding to it will help you in training him successfully.
You will need patience in training your dogs tricks. Dogs are best taught at around six weeks of age but if he's been around the proverbial block a few times, there is still hope. Remember, you need to be cool and collected even when he messes up, especially in the beginning. Your patient guidance will see him progress sooner or later. Be consistent in your teaching patterns and training schedules. Confused dogs will forget what you want them to learn.
When teaching your dogs tricks, do so in an area you will least likely be interrupted. A more interesting object may be a better source of entertainment for him than the present training session. You will be hard-pressed to keep his attention when that happens. A backyard free from commotions, or any quiet fenced-in area will be a good classroom for him.
More than anything, keep in mind the reason you got the dog in the first place. Enjoy his doggie company! When training is beginning to seem like a chore, take five and just play around with him. Dogs will lavish you with unconditional love whatever may have happpened to you this week. And at the end of the day, it's not how well he rolled over but how he got you to smile that makes him the perfect pet to have.

To any aquarium hobbyist, the exciting and creative time to be had building your own little underwater fantasyland often can feel let down by what follows: watching a week's pall of dirt and dullness settling over everything that you prized for its clear color and healthful liveliness. The joy of building and owning a beautiful aquarium asks of only a small sacrifice: the will to work some regular time for cleaning into your schedule, as you would to walk your air breathing pets. Aquarium maintenance as it happens, deals with more than merely a good scrubbing for everything in sight that is slimy; you need to know any little about water chemistry and the biological requirements for healthy fish life as well.
The typical aquarium needs a little hands-on time about twice a month. The maintenance routine usually begins with switching off electricity to the tank, for safety's sake. Aquarium maintenance shops typically get a lot of business from first-time hobbyists who scrub their tanks without thinking about how today's tanks mostly come in acrylic and not glass. Replacing sccratched panes can be a tidy business. Acrylic needs special cleaning techniques. A good way to go, cleaning the algae film off the front of your aquarium would be to use an improvised plastic scraper, an old credit card for example. Cleaning the salt deposits off the front window in a saltwter aquarium, is important too. When you clean out your aquarium filter, do no more thorough a job than rinsing it in any water you took out of your tank. The filter's medium holds a valuable collection of friendly bacteria; if you just took it out to clean under the tap, you would waste a lot of it.
Most of the uneaten fish food and water, bodily waste and other debris collects in the gravel and substrate that lines the bottom of your tank. There are special aquarium vacuum cleaners available that can help you with this part of your aquarium maintenance routine. Cleaning your aquarium each time, you'll find that you need to bail out and replace no more than about a quarter of its water capacity to keep things fresh. If you have a saltwater aquarium, you will need to put on your chemist's hat and make sure that you have exactly the right level of saltiness to the water.
But freshly-made saltwater can sometimes sicken your fish, and you need to use water prepared a day in advance. You need a hydrometer to check for the right level of saltiness, you need to make sure that you use water with no chlorine in it; your aquarium supplies dealer will have the chemicals you need to clean the chlorine up out of the water that comes out the tap. It doesn't take much more than that to keep your aquarium clean and your fish happy. Aquarium maintenance is not really difficult; it's just that there's just something about it that upsets even the most stable among us.

Can you really cure your pets' flea problem using only organic remedies? This is one pet-care myth that has been circulating for many years and depending on who you ask you'll find a whole variety of different points of view regarding this question. The basic theory argued is that you can easily treat your pets for fleas without having to use any type of synthetic chemicals or medications. This theory originates from the notion that commercially available flea-care products can potentially harm your pet instead of help with removing fleas and ticks.
When first confronting your dogs' flea problem, you can actually find some success by taking an all out organic attack on the pests, though results will vary dependent on the level of infestation, the breed and health of your pet and also the environment that your pet lives in. Many pet owners think that going organic simply means limiting your options to giving your pet an organic-based flea shampoo bath followed by manually removing fleas from your pet using a comb + brush combo.
While it is true that using organic based products is typically a safe bet you can make when purchasing products you need to keep in mind that sometimes it might not be enough. If you only buy all-organic pet products, you may be worsening your dogs' flea problem considerably by setting these limitations. While an all-organic based flea shampoo bath is a good start, your pet will need more than just a bath to keep the parasites away for good. Besides, in order for this approach to work you'd need to give your pet a bath on a pretty regular basis which is a strain on spare-time not to mention water resources.
If you really want to keep fleas away for good you will need to combine an organic flea shampoo bath with other natural means to repel parasites as well. This means keeping the environment that your pet lives in flea/parasite free. You'll only find yourself frustrated with your dogs' flea problem if fail to rid your home of all possible flea eggs and larvae that are scattered about.
Important steps for a successful 'natural' flea prevention starts with washing your pets bedding with hot water, letting it dry in the sun completely before putting it back where it belongs. Make sure to vacuum your carpets and/or rugs, steam cleaning them if possible, to kill any growing flea larvae. You might hate to read this next part but another key step in preventing flea and tick attacks involves keeping a clean lawn, so don't skimp on your weekly lawn-mowing. What mowing does is it removes all possible flea or tick breeding grounds that might be lurking just outside your backdoor.
As far as manually removing any visible flea and ticks using a special brush or comb, this will only temporarily help ease any discomfort your pet is going through, it won't actually prevent it from quickly returning because the larvae and eggs will still be there. Those fine toothed flea combs never really pick up anything smaller than the half-grown bugs. I'd be a fool by not also adding that the amount of effort involved in keeping your pet flea-free by hand really gets tiresome by the third and fourth day of manual flea-removal (Yes, they really can come back that fast without proper treatment). Instead something to try is to add other organic solutions (e.g. applying diatomaceous earth) to prevent the possibility that the fleas will be able to lay any new eggs in combination with the flea-shampoo bath. You can find more information on flea treatment products at Flea Treatment Reviews

Raising a puppy doesn't only mean providing food and loving attention to your puppy. You will be responsible for teaching the puppy how to behave well as it grows up. It just doesn't grow old and understand you on its own. You have to be teaching him manners that become his habit so that he would be able to live a good life with you in your neighborhood. There are many training methods out there that are written about. The general principles are simple and these should guide you to having the right idea in how to teach your dog right.
The most common way a dog owner would train the dog is to keep it company and let it do whatever it wants as long as the dog owner isn't bothered by it. This is sadly not enough and the owner is taking on a very passive position. The dog must realize that the owner can assert his authority and assume responsibility so it listens to him. Many owners tend to think that it's needless especially when they have small dogs. Even small dogs need to be taught some manners and often enough, the small ones are nasty and would nip at a child. You can't let the dog lead you. It should be following your cue, although not all the time. You should be the one dictating which behavior is appropriate in what situation. To do this, you can't just let your dog be around other people or animals when it hasn't learned how to behave well.
The other kind of thinking is reinforcing good behavior by giving the dog praises. It's nice of course. It does work, but you should also not overdo it. When you're training your dog, you are giving a clear signal that it did a good job but you're still in training. Excessive praising would come across as an invitation to start play time. That just takes away the focus from training. Other people also use treats as positive reinforcement. This works fine for dogs that are receptive to such a reward.
Giving treats is a classic and works pretty well with animals that exert a lot of energy doing tricks such as seals and dolphins but you're only teaching a dog to sit or behave a certain way around people or other dogs. It may not have a voracious enough appetite to find the treats rewarding especially when you're training it after dinner.
To get the best results in training your dogs, you have to let the dog know that you are the master. Dogs have an innate sense of social ordering. Once you are considered the top dog, it will follow you better. You should be able to give verbal or non-verbal commands and make your dog comply. To do this, it must be clear to your dog that you are the one that determines its welfare. You are the one granting it privileges in the house.

Diabetes is not just a human disease. It is also prevalent in canines. In general, the most afflicted with diabetes are older dogs and certain breeds such as Poodles, Old English Sheepdogs, Golden Retrievers, Daschunds, Miniature Pinscher, Schnauzer and Beagles.
Diabetes is defined as the non production of insulin with increased glucose levels in the blood. In order to remedy this situation, insulin must be given. Luckily, there is specific insulin produced for canine use.
Two forms of Diabetes:
Diabetes Insipidus: Is the lack of the anti-diuretic hormone called Vasopressin. Vasopressin controls how the kidneys absorb water.
Diabetes Mellitus (DM): Is insulin insufficiency. It is the most common and the most dangerous for dogs.
Diabetes is comprised of two types:
Type 1 - Is insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas is not making insulin at all. Type 1 is seen mostly in younger dogs.
Type 2 - Is non insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas is making insulin but the body is resistant to it. This type is mostly seen in older dogs.
Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can be passed from parent to puppies. In addition, big dogs have a higher risk for onset of diabetes than smaller dogs.
Symptoms:
You may notice that your dog is:
Eating more Drinking more Weighing less Diagnostic Testing:
If your dog is showing symptoms of this disease, a visit to the vet is in order. The vet will conduct blood tests to check your pet's glucose level. He will also do a urinalysis to check for kidney function and urinary tract infection. If your pet is positive for diabetes, changes in diet and getting more exercise will aid in reducing the symptoms and prevent complications.
Treatment:
Treatment generally consists of a high fiber and protein diet with fats and carbohydrates no longer being allowed. This may require that you feed your dog prepared meals. In addition, feeding your dog at the same time every day helps regulate glucose levels at a consistent normal range. If insulin is needed, it is always given after meals. It is very important to note that your dog must be allowed to have ALL the water they want.
Exercise:
Regular daily exercise at the same time each day helps to keep blood glucose down, thus preventing a detrimental effect of up and down glucose levels. Glucose needs to be consistently within normal levels.
Another risk factor for diabetes in dogs is hormonal changes experienced by female dogs. This can be alleviated by having your dog spayed.

All ear infections, regardless of the cause, may have the same symptoms. Some symptoms to watch for at home that might mean your dog has an ear infection are:
Shaking of the Head
Scratching at the head or ears
Constant rubbing of the head and ears on the floor or ground
A prominent redness or irritation in the ear canal
Discharge coming from the ears
A brown or yellowish discharge present in the ears
Foul odor coming from the ear
Pan when ears are petted or touched
Veterinarian Visit - The Diagnosis
At the first sign of symptoms an appointment should be made with a veterinarian. It is also important to remember that you should never put anything into your dogs ears before seeing the veterinarian. This could result in additional symptoms including neurological which include head tilting and walking in circles.
For dogs that get repeated ear infections or have infections that will not go away with treatment, it is important to find the underlying cause of their problems. Some things are easy to figure out just from a physical examination. If a dog has a lot of hair in its ears, floppy pinnae, or small ear canals, a visual examination will show this. Tumors and foreign objects in the ear can usually be seen during a physical examination, too.
In order to rule out an allergy to food, the veterinarian will put your dog on a hypoallergenic food for a period of about eight weeks. During this time you will monitor your dog and keep a journal of any receding symptoms, increasing symptoms or no change in symptoms at all.
Atopy can be ruled out with either blood tests or with skin testing, similar to allergy testing in people. These tests will usually tell specifically what things a dog is allergic to.
Blood tests for endocrine related diseases will be performed. These tests show the veterinarian if a certain endocrine organ is functioning properly. If there is an endocrine problem, other symptoms will present themselves besides ear infections.
Treatment for Ear Infection
Once the underlying cause is determined, the treatment can begin. For dogs with food allergies, avoiding these foods is paramount. In dogs with seasonal and inhalant allergies, a combination of medications including antihistamines, omega-3 fatty acid supplements and cyclosporine will be prescribed and your dog will most likely be required to take them for the rest of his/her life.
Periodic treatment of skin and ear infections with antibiotics, antifungals, shampoos and topical rinses is usually necessary. The course of treatment varies for each dog and depends on how severely allergic they are and how well they respond to therapy.
For the most part, ear infections can be treated with oral medications and a topical medication placed in the ear. This treatment usually lasts two weeks, however some cases may take longer. It is highly important to note that you must also clean your dogs ears once or twice a week to remove medication buildup. This can collect debris which then impedes the healing process. If after the medication is completed the ear infection is not gone, an ear swab or culture may be needed for further testing.
Dog Ear Infection Prevention
Treat any underlying diseases that might be present.
Dry your dogs ears out after a bath.
Dry your dogs ears completely after swimming
Do not use water or cleanser in your dogs ears unless absolutely necessary and always make sure to dry them completely when you do.
Always remember: Keeping dogs ears dry is the key element to prevention and treatment of ear infections.

In the same way that millions of people cope with diabetes, so too, does the disease affect canines. Specifically, the disorder is called diabetes mellitus (DM). An insulin deficiency prevents your pooch's body from metabolizing glucose effectively. There are two varieties of DM: Type I and Type II. The former is the most prevalent type (99% of dogs with DM suffer from this type) and occurs when the body doesn't produce enough insulin. The latter occurs when insulin is manufactured but your pooch's body isn't able to use it properly.
In this article, we'll describe the warning signs that may suggest your canine has developed diabetes mellitus. It's a potentially life-threatening condition, so catching it early is critical. We'll also explain how the disease is diagnosed and treated as well as what you can do at home to help your dog manage the disorder.
Possible Warning Signs
The most common symptoms of DM include a marked increase in the amount of water your canine drinks and as a result, the frequency with which he urinates. You might also notice that he is losing weight even though he maintains a strong appetite. Other signs include a general apathy or decrease in physical activity and the sudden onset of blindness.
Treatment After Diagnosis
The health of your pooch can decline rapidly once diabetes mellitus develops. His body's inability to process glucose effectively can lead to severe dehydration and other health issues. It is important that you have a veterinarian perform a full physical exam if you notice any of the warning signs described in the section above.
The veterinarian will ask you about your dog's eating routine as well as his elimination activity. You'll also be asked to describe any changes in his weight and disposition. Then, a urine analysis is performed to identify possible infections and review glucose levels.
Once diabetes mellitus has been diagnosed, your veterinarian will teach you how to administer daily insulin injections for your pooch. He or she will also create a diet and exercise routine that will help your canine manage his weight. During the first several weeks of treatment, the amount of insulin administered will likely change. Most veterinarians prefer to start cautiously with small doses and increase them gradually.
What You Can Do At Home
Providing care for your dog involves administering daily insulin shots (sometimes, twice daily) as well as any other medications that your veterinarian has recommended. You'll also need to be vigilant regarding your canine's eating and exercise routine in order to ensure he maintains a healthy weight level. If your dog experiences an insulin overdose (he might seem weak or disoriented), give him food right away.
As noted, diabetes mellitus can be potentially deadly. However, once it has been diagnosed, you can help your dog live a healthy, happy, and problem-free life.

The biggest challenge faced by the owner of a new dog is the name that they are actually going to call it by. Today there are hundreds, even thousands of names that a person is able to choose from by which they can call their pet. But unfortunately not all the names that owners choose for their dogs are really suitable. However in this article we provide some pointers which should when it comes to selecting a name by which your new dog will be called and so make this part of the process of owning a dog much easier.
1. When selecting a name for your dog go for one which is not only easy for you to say but pronounce as well. If you decide upon a name which you have difficulty saying or pronouncing then your dog will find it much more difficult to understand you. It is best that you (and your family) select a name that can easily be said time and time again and will not provide any confusion to your dog. Plus selecting an easy name means that at those times when things can get stressful, say when you are trying to maintain control over them will make it much easier to deal with the situation.
2. It is important that you only give your dog one name and never two as you would with a person. Any dog that has more than one name can become easily confused and so training and controlling the animal will also be more difficult. Therefore only provide them with one name and an easy one which they will in turn find easy to remember.
3. Never select a name for your dog that sounds like a command. So avoid names that sound like "heel", "jump" or "kill". Unfortunately a dog whose name sounds like a command can become easily confused when you are carrying out their training. This is because they will not know what is their name and what it is they should be responding to.
4. When selecting a name for your dog go for one that has either 1 or 2 syllables in it, but no more. Names such as Taz, Heff, Jack, Jodie, Lady and Tramp are perfect names to select. Giving a dog a name like these you will find that not only do they learn and remember it much more quickly but they often respond much better when called.
5. Never go for a name that seems to have a negative feel to it. Dogs are very aware of the way a person's voice sounds and the less positive you are when calling the less likely they are to respond to you. Also it is important to remember that not just you but other people (including family members and friends) will be calling for the dog to respond to them as well.
6. Also avoid names that could be embarrassing or are simply out of the question. Remember that dogs are very intelligent and they just may begin to realize that the name chosen is not really appealing and they will soon pick up on any negative feelings from you.
7. Finally after you have chosen a name for your dog and you start to use it then don't start changing it. By using one name and then changing to another could leave your dog in a complete state of confusion and they may end up not knowing if they are coming or going.
However at the end of day when you are choosing a name for your dog it should be as much fun as possible. It is important that anyone who is going to have contact with the animal on a daily basis should have some involvement in the name chosen especially if it is to be a family pet. But you also need to keep the guidelines mentioned above in mind and this will further help to make the process of selecting a name for your dog much easier.

Horses in Florida are the latest target of equine thieves. These hooligans are terrorizing local barns and stables in an attempt to steal and resell horses.
Some steps that seem to work in keeping horses safe are security systems consisting of monitors and cameras. These have been effective in both deterring and apprehending equine criminals. Proper lighting and lock systems is also a great deterrent.
But what about those owners who keep horses in pasture situations? Those horses are the most likely targets, and keeping them safe has become quite an issue for most. In order to stave off an attempt at theft, owners are getting creative. Many are making patrols around the pasture at night, just to make sure no one is out where they dont need to be.
Horses living far out in pasture can be brought in towards the pasture owners primary residence. Near the home is a great place to set up less expensive security measures like baby monitors and an old fashioned window overlooking the pasture.
Video cameras are fantastic ways to protect your horses from danger. Not only will these cameras provide and acceptable way to monitor the horses from afar, but they will also allow you to video tape any burglars that may be successful.
Men and women that decide to patrol their pastures should make sure they are well prepared for any sort of trouble they might run into. Always remember to bring two flashlights, a cell phone, and even a firearm or can of pepper spray for protection. Never confront a criminal before calling your local authorities.
The multi-tool is a great companion for patrols. This little gadget is easy to carry because it is lightweight and designed to fit in a pocket or belt strap. Use this tool for making any sort of emergency repairs while out on patrol.
I hope this article has given you the knowledge you need to start protecting your horses with more care. Use the information you gained here to start your horse security systems and never stop improving them.

The benefits or organic shampoo can be passed on to your pets. Animals can develop skin irritation from harsh dog shampoos. Your pet will appreciate your kindness by switching a gentle organic dog shampoo.
Natural dog shampoos come in a variety of scents. All of the scents are derived from natural compounds. Many scents come from citrus fruits and you can also find natural scents from aloe vera, jasmine, coconut and other essential oils.
Even though the natural ingredients are better for your pet, sometimes the main ingredients in the shampoo will cause your pet to break out. This does not happen often, however rest be assured that the ingredients are not harmful to your dog or cat like regular pet shampoos.
There are many benefits of using organic dog shampoo for your pet. Using natural treatments are less harmful than their counter parts. All natural products tend to be much milder than traditional shampoos. The harsher the product is, the more chances that your dog's skin will break out into a nasty rash. Treat your dog like you child, you would only want to give the best products to your child, right?
The positive aspect of using organic dog shampoo is that your dog's skin will not be damaged by any of the harmful chemicals contained in regular shampoo. It is known that organic products contain much milder ingredients and are not as harsh as traditional shampoo. Your veterinarian can help you choose the best organic shampoo for your pet. Also, it is recommended that you test your dog's skin for different types of food allergies. This is the best way to determine which organic shampoos are suitable for your pet.
You should also choose a dog hair care product that is 100% USDA certified. That way you will have no doubt as in the quality of your organic dog shampoo. There might not be anything wrong with your traditional dog shampoo, but when your dog starts scratching like crazy, you might want to consider buying a natural dog shampoo.

Have you ever considered a guinea pig as a pet? Guinea pigs are often classified as pocket pets, small pets which do well and live the majority of their lives in cages or pens. You may be surprised to know that these rodents make excellent companions. If space is an issue or you have allergies to dogs and cats you may find that a pet guinea pig is an ideal option.
They make good pets but what makes them such good companion animals? Their size is neither too large to fit into a small space nor so small you cannot handle them safely. Their personalities are friendly and adaptable. Their ease of care: a standard diet of readily available ingredients. However, before getting one you should look at finding out as much as you can so that you can provide them with the safest and healthiest living environment possible.
Other rodents such as mice, hamsters and gerbils are firmly nocturnal. This can make it difficult for them to fit in with the activity cycle of most families. A guinea pig will adapt its activity to be more compatible with that of its environment. This can lead to increased interaction with people and make it a more desirable pet.
Their size is also an asset when you are considering one for a pet. Although any young child should be closely supervised if they are handling an animal the larger size of a guinea pig makes them easier to handle and somewhat less fragile than other rodents like hamsters, gerbils or rats. Guinea pigs can be ten inches long and often weigh several pounds.
Guinea pigs also live longer than most rodents. They can live up to eight years although they are more likely to live four to five years. They are also fully formed at birth and are able to run around when only a few hours old. If they are handled correctly from an early age they can become very used to people and these are the guinea pigs which will make the best pets. They should not be removed from their mother until they are six weeks old but if they are exposed to people as babies this will help make them friendly and affectionate adults.
A guinea pig is quite a vocal animal and their cries can be heard at a fair distance. They have a range of different noises, including chirping, burbling and purring. A guinea pig that is very used to its owner will often emit a loud noise when they hear their owner approach, or they think there are treats to be had. If you keep more than one guinea pig in the same cage, it can be quite entertaining to listen to their chirps and squeaks as they interact.
Although guinea pigs seem like easy animals to keep there are a few things you need to keep in mind. They have some specific nutritional and health requirements in order to keep them healthy. They need a diet that is rich in fibre and vitamin C in order to keep them in top physical shape. A balanced diet that features a variety of fruits and vegetables, good quality pellets, hay and clean, fresh drinking water will help to keep your guinea pig healthy and content.
If you do decide to open your home and your heart to a pet guinea pig, you should know that you are gaining a loyal companion for the next four to five years. These large rodents can be a fun and friendly addition to your family life.

It is very common for any dog over the age of three to have some form of dental disease such as tartar or gingivitis. In fact, statistics state 85%. This is why dental disease is one of the most common canine afflictions. The most common symptoms include:
Bad Smelling Breath or Halitosis
Bleeding From the Gums
Display of blood on chew toys
As the progression of gingivitis and dental disease progress, other symptoms will appear. These include:
Unwillingness to Eat
Drooling
Inability or difficulty in picking up or chewing hard food
Discomfort when opening mouth
Enlargement of lymph nodes underneath the jaw
Swelling on the face underneath the eye
Bacteria from advanced dental disease can spread to other organs of the body such as the heart, kidneys and brain causing severe infection.
The Vet Visit - Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis of dental disease is based on physical examination. By opening a dogs mouth and examining its teeth, it is easy to tell whether or not calculus and gingivitis are present. While calculus and gingivitis above the gum are easy to diagnose, tartar accumulation and infection below the gum line cannot be diagnosed with a physical examination. They are usually diagnosed with x-rays of the jaw. Normally this is done during treatment because it requires general anesthesia.
To treat tartar buildup and gingivitis, your dog will need a professional veterinary cleaning. Performed as an outpatient procedure, it is simple and easy, but does require general anesthetic.
While under sedation, a dog's teeth are cleaned and polished both above and below the gum line much like a human dentist does for people.
When severe dental disease is present, a veterinarian will perform x-rays while the dog is under sedation in order to check for severe infection or abscesses. This allows the veterinarian to determine if a tooth or teeth must be pulled. In most cases, dogs do very well after tooth extraction and can still enjoy solid food.
There are some owners who choose not to have their dogs teeth removed. Instead, they prefer to visit a veterinary dental specialist to salvage a broken or infected tooth.
Dog Dental Disease Prevention
The best way to prevent tartar accumulation and gingivitis is with daily brushing. Use special toothpaste made only for dogs along with a soft toothbrush when brushing your dogs teeth. Do not use human toothpaste as it was not meant to be swallowed and foams too much. The video below contains a detailed description of how to brush your dogs teeth.

Riding a horse for the first time can be an intimidating, even scary idea for the novice beginner. However, your first time on a horse should be a pleasurable and rewarding experience.
Your first ride should be confined to a corral or riding pen with an experienced instructor teaching you. Find a local barn or stable that provides the instruction you'll need. Ask for help deciding whether you want to ride Western or English style.
Riding western is a little more relaxed, and is practiced most often in trail riding or pleasure riding. If you are not ready to make a commitment to a regular riding style, stick with Western pleasure. You will learn the basic commandments of how to ride and guide your horse, in a more calm and pleasurable style.
When you arrive for the initial lesson, be sure to familiarize yourself with the environment. This helps because if you are relaxed and comfortable, you'll have a better experience. Horses identify their riders by scent. Let your horse get familiar with your scent before you attempt a mount. Hold your hand out with the palm up and keep your thumb tucked in so that it doesn't tempt the horse by looking like a carrot. When you're sure the horse is familiar with your scent, give it some neck pets.
One of the things that must be checked before you mount the horse is the girth. The saddle is held in place by a strap the goes under the horse's belly. It should be tight enough to hold the saddle in place. It should be tight enough to barely fit two fingers under it at the center of the belly. Ask your instructor to show you how to check the girth and then tighten or loosen accordingly. Once the girth is in good order, it is time to mount up.
Since this is your first time on a horse, use a mounting block to mount the horse (always on the left side!) Place your left foot in the left stirrup, and swing your right side over the horse, and place your right foot in the right stirrup. If your instructor is not holding the horse for you, make sure you have a grip on the reins while mounting.
Your instructor will teach you to sit correctly in the saddle. You should be seated up straight, with your lower body relaxed. It will help if you can think of a string pulling your top half straight up in the air. Your lower body then becomes a part of the horse. Keep your bum moving smoothly with the horse's' movements. Point your ankles down in the stirrup, which have been adjusted to your length.
This should be fun and not in the least uncomfortable. Become one with the horse. Relax and enjoy the ride.

The Anatomy of the Canine Ear
Dogs, just like humans have ears that function to hear sounds in the environment. The difference is that while the outside of a human ear is straight, a dogs ear can be floppy or straight. This area is referred to as the Pinna. Its main function is to funnel sound into the ear canal. A dogs ear canal is "L" shaped while a humans is straight. A dogs ear canal is made up of the descending canal or vertical canal and the horizontal canal which ends at the eardrum or tympanic membrane. A canine eardrum is clear and separates the external, middle and inner ear.
Common Causes of Dog Ear Infections
The most common is an infection of the outside of the ear including the horizontal and vertical canals. This infection is referred to as Otitis Externa and is caused by three main reasons; ear mites, bacteria and yeast.
Ear mite infections are caused by the mite Otodectes cynotis. Ear mite infections are seen more in puppies than adult dogs, but any dog can get ear mites. A dog gets ear mites from other infected dogs. Ear mites can live in the ear and on the head and neck.
The bacterium most commonly involved in ear infections is Staphylococcus and the yeast most commonly seen is Malassezia. Bacterial and yeast infections are more common in dogs than ear mite infections. Even though there are only a few causes of ear infections, many things predispose a dog to getting an ear infection. Some of the most common predisposing factors are:
Malformed Ear Canal - When a dogs ear canal is too long or too small, this provides ample opportunity for moisture and debris to become trapped leading to an infection.
Excessive Ear Canal Hair - When there is too much hair in the ear canal, it tends to trap debris and retain water which leads to ear infections.
Swimming and Humid Areas - If a dog loves to swim, he/she can have water trapped in the horizontal and vertical canals which leads to infection. In addition, if a dog resides in a humid climate, the ear can retain moisture from the air, thus resulting in an infection.
Floppy or Folded Over Ears - Pinnae that cover the vertical canal can trap debris and retain water which results in ear infection.
Food allergies - An allergic response to a particular food ingredient can change the environment of the ear canal leading to moisture build-up and an ear infection. Dogs with food allergies may have other skin problems, too.
Seasonal or Inhalant allergies (atopy) - An allergic response to grass, trees, mold, dust, etc. can change the environment of the ear canal leading to moisture build-up and an ear infection. Dogs with seasonal allergies will usually have other skin problems, too.
Systemic Disease - Hypothyroidism or other diseases that affect the endocrine system hamper the immune systems ability to fight infection. When both of these afflictions occur, an ear infection is inevitable.
A growth or foreign object in the ear - A growth or foreign object in the ear can trap water and debris in the ear canal leading to an infection.
Over Ear leaning - If a dog's ears are cleaned too often, excess water and cleanser can be left behind. These two things can trap debris and eventually lead to an ear infection.

The way you choose to memorialize your lost pet will be a reflection of the special times the two of you shared together. You may choose to remember your beloved pet by helping other animals find loving homes. Perhaps you prefer to create a living memorial in remembrance of your pet and his or her unique characteristics. Here are a few suggestions of how to memorialize your lost pet.
One practical idea is to donate money to a local animal shelter in honor of your pet. It's an excellent way to memorialize your dog or cat while offering help to others in need of a good home. This particular way of memorializing your pet is especially meaningful if you adopted your dog or cat from an animal shelter. Donating food, pet equipment, or even your time to an animal shelter are also ways to pay tribute to a longtime, loyal pet.
A creative way to memorialize your lost pet is to write a poem. Consider all of the times that he or she was there to keep you company or just give you a laugh. Once you've written the poem, have it engraved on a decorative stone and find a place for it in your garden. If you'd like to enjoy the poem inside your house, copy it in onto a sheet of fancy parchment paper and frame it. For an additional personal touch, you might include a photo or sketch of your pet next to the poem.
The third idea for memorializing your lost pet is to plant a tree in his or her honor. Perhaps your pet liked to exercise in a particular park or nearby woods. You'll need to check with the property owners, but a tree serves as a living remembrance of your pet that others are able to see and appreciate. If your pet preferred to stay within the confines of your yard, you may want to plant a tree or some flowers in a particular spot there.
Perhaps you have in mind a more private way to memorialize your lost pet. After all, you and your pet shared plenty of days together that were special for just the two of you. A photo album is both an imaginative and personal item that will help you to remember the fun times with your pet. The photo album, or scrap book, could be separated into the various seasons of your pet's life. For instance, if you had a dog you could include photos of him or her as a puppy then as an adult dog. Opening up a memorial photo album is one of the most comforting ways to remember treasured times spent with your pet.

I've always considered anything to do with horses to be "elitist" and never thought I, as a middle income wage earner would ever have more than a passing acquaintance with it, however, in 1981, I gave birth to a beautiful little girl who quickly became enamored with the huge beasts from the time she could talk.
At the time, I figured it was a passing fancy that she would soon outgrow, so I was not concerned with the costs involved with horses, riding lessons, equestrian clothing, etc.
In her elementary school years, my daughter did not excel. According to her teachers and other child experts we took her to, she was mentally slow. They told my husband and I that we should not be concerning ourselves with a college education for her. We just knew they were wrong and set out to prove it was THEM, not her who was deficient.
Her first riding lesson took place when our daughter was 10 years old. We watched in wonder as perched atop the horse, she transformed from the shy, introverted persona that she portrayed in school and became the self-confident champion that we had been sure lurked inside.
But, oh, the expense of it all. Keeping her on that horse became almost unmanageable for us over that next year, and we suffered trying to pay the costs of this "horse habit".
Then, in the sixth grade, we were offered a trade off for her riding lessons. If she worked at the stables, doing everything from grooming horses to helping new, younger riders, she could earn her lessons.
Six years later, our daughter graduated from high school with top honors in all her subjects as well as with a full scholarship to one of the best colleges in the United States. When she was 17, she finally removed the name of her old horse, Merlin, from its place of honor on her notebook, replacing it with the name of her boyfriend. But the boyfriend was well aware that this honor was bestowed upon him only because he also had a deep passion for horses.
Our 3.8 grade point average college graduate never cost us a dime after her sixth grade. She worked steadily at the stable until she graduated.
We look back over our daughter's growing up years and her educational career, and we realize that her passion for everything about horses, and her love of riding not only helped her be successful in that field, but in school and every other area of her life. The determination and work ethic that was required for her to follow her passion taught important lessons, and her willingness to earn her own lessons from an early age, showed her the way to achieve by hard work in a way that many other parents have wished their children possessed.
We are extremely glad that we allowed our daughter to become involved in this "costly" pastime all those years ago. It acted as an incentive for her to adjust and find her place in this otherwise crazy world. Horses accomplished what the "experts" could not - just by being there for her.

Dogs are still viewed as a man's best friend, even though many of them would like to eat the remote control. It is because they have that characteristic of being dynamic, but they are at home with a television addicted couch potato. This mismatch can make for a strained human relationship - or a really sad dog.
If a dog is what you want to bring into your home, you must think about the activity level that the dog needs to be physically and emotionally healthy. Some lazy adults think that if they only had a dog that needed walking twice daily, then they would get the physical exercise they've so carefully avoided for so many years. Active dogs need active keepers, but if they have been matched with idle folks, a change of ways is badly needed - nonetheless, that can't be easily done. Since idle keepers are more likely to slack off during walking sessions, the dog is not likely to get the essential benefits of having a frequent outside time thus the dog will be the one to suffer.
Giving your dog enough physical exercise is not equivalent to giving him the quantity of daily physical activity that he needs. The time to walk, run, jump and relax is what each and every dog needs for every single day. That may come with a walk on the lead to the park or around the neighborhood. You don't have to put your dog on a leash to let him enjoy the freedom of running and playing if you have a home with a fenced yard. If you are one of those older adults who are concerned about having limited mobility, then you might as well go for a dog that won't demand you of too much activity everyday. There are individuals who are inclined to have their recreation or enjoy the feeling of relaxation out-of-doors and they are those of which active dogs would love to spend their lives with. Both keeper and dog look forward to the end of the day, because it would be the time for them to enjoy playing chase or running together in the park.
Larger dogs tend to be more physically active. Those coming from the breeds of working or hunting dogs may comprise those kinds of dogs. They have an innate desire to be busy and work off energy. Dogs which are born for movement and agility may include the Doberman, Beagle, Irish Setter, German Shepherd and Greyhound, so, the longing to have daily exercises is already expected by them. Size can fool you as the extremely large dogs like the St. Bernard and Bull Mastiff, who can easily outweigh their keepers, are low physical activity dogs. The movies may have presented you with a St. Bernard doing some rescue operation, what you don't recognise is that to sleep in front of the fireplace is the physical activity that usually takes up most of the dog's time.
Small dogs like Poodles and Chihuahuas can live in small spaces and forgo the daily long walk in the park, but these dogs can be high in activity even just around your house because they have in them some high-strung temperaments which are already part of their breed. Granted, their activity may be running aimlessly around the room, jumping on your guests or bouncing on you, but once they're already out of energy, all they do is simply behave. That's the point where the little dogs crawl back on your lap or on their sumptuous pillow for a well-deserved nap to recharge.
There are a lot of things that you need to consider just before you decide on buying a dog. By taking time to make a profile of the dog that best fits your living space, character, and personal activity level, you'll have a better match for a lasting relationship.

Dental disease is one of the most common problems that dogs have. Up to 85% of dogs over the age of three years usually have some degree of tartar and gingivitis. The symptoms that owners notice most frequently include:
Halitosis or Bad Breath
Bleeding of the Gums
Display of blood on chew toys
As the progression of gingivitis and dental disease progress and become more severe, other symptoms will surface. These include:
Unwillingness to Eat
Excessive Drooling
Difficulty picking up food or chewing hard food
Discomfort when opening mouth
Enlarged lymph nodes under the jaw
Swelling on the face underneath the eye
With advanced dental disease; it is possible for bacteria from the mouth to spread to other organs and cause infections. Organs which may be affected include the heart, kidneys, and brain.
The Vet Visit - Diagnosis and Treatment
A general physical examination can tell a veterinarian if your dog has dental disease. The procedure is simple consisting of a simple viewing of the mouth, gums and teeth. However, tartar below the gum line cannot be seen so an x-ray will need to be taken. This procedure is generally performed during treatment as they both require anesthesia.
The best way to treat gingivitis and tartar accumulation is with a professional veterinary cleaning. This procedure is usually an outpatient procedure that is done in the veterinary office. It requires general anesthesia.
While a dog is under anesthesia, the teeth are cleaned and polished in the same manner that a human dentist cleans and polishes peoples teeth. The teeth are cleaned both above and below the gum line.
If severe dental disease and gingivitis are present, x-rays of the teeth and jaws should be taken while the dog is under anesthesia to have its teeth cleaned. This allows assessment of the health of the jawbone and root of the tooth and helps in preparing a treatment plan. In some cases, where there is an abscess or severe infection under or around the tooth root, a tooth may need to be pulled. X-rays of the jaw allow the veterinarian to decide which teeth may or may not need to be pulled. Most dogs do very well after having teeth pulled. A great many of them can even continue to eat dry food after losing a large number of teeth.
In some cases, owners may wish to not have teeth pulled. In this case, it is wise to see a board certified veterinary dentist. Root canals and other procedures may be done which might salvage a broken or infected tooth.
Preventing Dog Dental Disease
Brushing your dogs teeth is the best and most effective way to prevent dental disease. Always use a soft brush and toothpaste made especially for your dogs. It is important to note not to use human toothpaste as it was not meant to be swallowed and it tends to foam too much. Below you will find a detailed video on how to brush your dogs teeth.

The mouth, also referred to as the oral cavity is a very important tool in the digestive system of dogs. When a dog chews its food, it is broken down into smaller pieces where enzymes in the stomach and small intestines can digest it. This is why teeth are a crucial element in a dogs digestive process. A dogs front teeth and tongue allow him/her to pick up food while the back teeth function to grind the food into smaller particles.
In total, a dog has 42 teeth. They are comprised of the incisors and canines which are located in the front, and the premolars and molars which are located in the back. Each of these teeth have a part that is visible above the gum line called the crown as well as a part below the gum line called the root. Enamel covers the crown which is the hardest substance in the body. The dentin is below the enamel as well as the pulp which makes up most of the tooths blood vessels and nerves.
The root of a dogs tooth sits in the jaw bone. Some teeth have only one root and some teeth have more than one root. The tissue that surrounds a tooth at the gum line is called the gingiva. The gingiva in a normal dog is attached tightly to the jawbone underneath.
What are the Reasons for Plaque, Tartar and Gingivitis?
Just like us, food, saliva and bacteria remain on the teeth after eating. This is commonly referred to as plaque. While this is perfectly normal, it does need to be removed which can be done easily with brushing. Plaque releases toxins which can inflame the gum line. When this inflammation occurs, it is referred to as Gingivitis.
When plaque stays on the teeth for long enough, it will harden and turn into tartar or calculus. Tartar allows more bacteria and debris to accumulate. This makes inflammation of the gums worse. As gum inflammation gets worse, the gum recedes away from the tooth, the tooth becomes loose, bacteria and inflammation spread to the jawbone underneath the tooth, and eventually the tooth falls out. Tartar can accumulate above the gum line where it can be seen and also below the gum line where it cannot be seen.

Guinea pigs can be fun pets. To keep your pig in tip top shape it is important to know what makes up a balanced guinea pig diet. There are so many different diets available on the market especially if you include the different products that are marketed as treats. Guinea pigs do have specific nutritional requirements and it is a good idea to educate yourself a bit about what those are so you can feed your pig a balanced diet.
Young guinea pigs should be given as much hay as they can eat. They will need to be introduced to it but once they are most pigs love it. There are numerous different hay varieties on the market. Three varieties are timothy, alfalfa and mixed grass. Making sure that it is intended for food and not bedding is important. You want to make sure that there are no pesticides in the hay as they can make your guinea pig very sick. Hay is high in fibre and will help keep your pig?s digestive system in good shape.
Young pigs also need an unlimited supply of pellets. Older guinea pigs do not generally overeat but some may need to have a restricted diet if they are gaining too much weight. Younger guinea pigs need the chance to build up a healthy body weight and offering them the chance to eat freely is important for good health.
Pellets should make up the majority of any pig?s diet. You need to look for one that is nutritionally complete. The most important nutrient is vitamin C. Many pellets have added vitamin C but it can unfortunately lose its? strength over time. Always make sure you use pellets before the best before date so you can make sure that your guinea pig is getting as much vitamin C as it needs.
One vegetable to avoid is iceberg lettuce since it is not very high in nutrients. Leafy green vegetables including spinach, kale, romaine lettuce and parsley are good choices as they are nutritionally rich. Vegetables should be introduced one at a time and you should watch for any sign that there are loose stools. If this happens, you should not feed it to your guinea pig. Although vegetables are an important part of the overall diet you should still feed them in moderation.
Fruits and vegetables can be good for your guinea pig. They can add nutrients that cannot be found in pellets, and provide roughage and fibre that is good for your pig. You need to make sure that if you are introducing any new vegetables that you do so one at a time and watch for any negative side effects such as wet or soft stool. Any that do cause this problem should be taken back out of the diet. You should also be careful feeding fruit to your pig. They can be wonderful additions to the diet, but guinea pigs do have a sweet tooth and they may opt to eat only fruit if given the chance.
Fresh water is the other important factor in maintaining a healthy guinea pig. There should be fresh water that your guinea pig has access to at all times and if you notice that there is any dirt or debris in the water dish it should be cleaned and refilled. An alternative to the water bowl is a water bottle which is suspended from the side or top of the cage. It features a gravity fed spout which the guinea pig can use to get a drink. Keep in mind that if you opt to add vitamin supplements to the water the altered taste can keep the guinea pig from drinking and you should watch out for this.
Guinea pigs can be quite easy to take care of. They can live for years if you take care of them properly. A good guinea pig diet can be a critical step in ensuring the health and long life of your guinea pig.

Anybody that has had an aquarium understands that algae cannot be avoided and it is simply a thing that fish owners, whether salt or freshwater, need to deal with on a regular basis. There's four major types of algae - green, brown, red-brush, and blue green.
If you have a fish tank that receives plenty of light, the green algae will most probably be the type that will have to be dealt with. In this case, what fish owners see the most often is either the hair algae or the "green dot algae". The first one is simply long strings of algae, while the latter one is the green dots on the aquarium's side. The second type is also very hard to remove.
Brown algae appears very often in new aquariums within the first few days. If it can be seen in tanks that have been in use for a while already, it is necessary to check if the water contains enough phosphate and nitrate. Brown algae is usually likely to appear if not enough light reaches the aquarium. Cleaning the tank and assuring that it is lit well enough usually solves the problem.
Red-brush algae is a form of algae that loves aquariums that have a high PH, however it's incredibly difficult to manually remove red-brush algae from aquariums.
Blue-green algae is misleading because it's not exactly algae, it's really a cynobacteria. When it appears within an aquarium it looks like a slime that is commandeering your tank and can not only be detrimental to plants in the aquarium, but may endanger the health of your fish.
Among the easiest methods to reduce the volume of algae within the tank is to lower your lighting utilizing the smallest wattage you can. Keeping your aquarium lights on for less then nine hours a day will limit the amount of time algae has for photosynthesis.
Utilize distilled water as you clean the saltwater aquarium or swap out the water because altering your water every two to three weeks will limit the amount of time algae may thrive within the tank. As you swap out the water ensure you vacuum the rocks and keep utilization of additives as low as possible, changing the pre-filter pad every week. Stock the tank full of algae consuming fish. With saltwater aquariums that would be - Hard Star Fish, Yellow Tang Fish, Blennies, Turbo Snails, Angel Fish, and small Hermit Crabs.
Obtain the biggest, sturdiest glass cleansing algae magnet you're able to locate and then make use of it. If you utilize the magnet every single time that you cleanse the water in your aquarium the glass in the tank will probably remain algae free. For especially stubborn algae spots, you will have to use a razor blade, however do not fail to clean the runoff pipes. If you follow the advice found in this article, getting rid of fish tank algae will not be a problem for you ever again.

Its critical to seek immediate veterinary treatment when you notice the signs of a problem kidney in a cat. The earlier your cat gets treatment the more chances she has for a longer life with you. While chronic renal failure arrives over a long period of time, acute kidney failure is an emergency. Here's some tips to recognizing the symptoms of kidney failure in cats.
Feline kidneys are vulnerable to a number of life-threatening disorders that can lead to a failing kidney in a cat or chronic renal failure. Your vet would probably agree with the statistics that they see more cats 7 years and older that are showing signs of kidney failure in cats.
The risk for feline kidney disease may be inherited. Some long-haired breeds like Angoras and Persians and short-haired cats like the Abyssinian are more genetically predisposed to kidney problems, either acute or chronic renal failure.
The main difference between chronic and acute kidney failure in cats is that acute renal failure is a very severe situation that occurs relatively suddenly - over a week or a month. Chronic renal failure creeps up on your cat over a longer time, years even.
The most common cause of kidney failure in cats occurs when your cat swallows a toxic substance like antifreeze, pesticides, cleaning fluids and human medications. Common causes of acute renal failure include blockages that prevent a good flow of blood to the kidney in a cat or stones and inflammations blocking the flow of urine from the kidney into the bladder.
Signs Of Kidney Failure In Cats
Occasional vomiting Increase in water consumption Increase in urination Weight loss Loss of appetite
Your vet may refer to some of these symptoms with the terms "polydipsia" or "polyuria". Polydipsia means that your cat is drinking a lot of water - lots of it. On the other end, In fact, you this may be the first sign your recognize of a problem kidney in a cat. When you clean the litter box you find numerous pee-balls of cat litter, or unusually large ones.
If your vet suspects kidney failure in a cat she will evaluate your cat's BUN. BUN stands for blood urea nitrogen, as well as the creatinine levels. When these are elevated it means your cat's kidneys aren't working right and need extra help.
Traditionally, treating renal failure in cats is determined by the disorder causing the condition. If acute kidney failure is caused by a urinary tract blockage the stone must be removed immediately. Treating chronic renal failure is done with a more conservative approach. This may include intravenous fluid therapy and changes to diet.

Betta fish are a perfect start for anyone who wishes to own tropical fish. They are beautiful and taking care of them is far from difficult. Another great thing about the Betta Splendens is that they do not require too much space, which means you won't need to buy a large tank, at least in the beginning.
To ensure the well being of your betta the water's temperature should be kept at the level of about eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Specific betta fish food will also have to be provided. The food usually comes as pellets or flakes, and may also contain special additives meant to improve the color of the fish.
You will probably have to change the water in the tank approximately once a week, though with a filter installed that period may be a bit longer. As betta fish do not require large tanks, the process of replacing water does not take too long most of the time.
A great many people believe that betta fish cannot be retained with other fish or marine life, but this is not the case, even though you do have to be mindful what type you decide to join your betta in its tank. Naturally, setting a female betta in the aquarium with the male is not likely to produce a problem and other good fish include tiny fish that don't have large or flashy tails. You can even add a snail, for instance, the large apple snail.
It is important to remember nonetheless that setting a male in the same tank with a female will result in a large number of extra bettas. It is the truth though, that you cannot keep two male bettas together - even placing them in bowls close to each other creates exhibits of hostility.
You can add different ornaments to the tank, as well as crushed rock if needed. The betta should feel comfortable in the aquarium, which should be a place where it can swim around, play or hide whenever it wants to.
Betta fish are perfect for anyone who is hoping to begin in tropical fish maintaining as they are simple to look after and do not call for a lot of care. Nor do they call for a big amount of room and can manage without a lot of items that other varieties of tropical fish can't do without. When thinking of a betta or creating a habitat, consider having additional kinds of smaller fish that that don't have display signals such as flashy tails.

Organic shampoos are great for your pets as well as for you. Just like humans, your pet can develop skin irritation and allergies. The source can be caused by dust mites, dry skin, bugs, however, the majority of the time skin irritation is caused by chemicals in pet shampoo. You will do you pet a favor by switching to organic dog shampoo.
Natural dog shampoos come in a variety of scents. All of the scents are derived from natural compounds. Many scents come from citrus fruits and you can also find natural scents from aloe vera, jasmine, coconut and other essential oils.
The benefits of organic shampoo outweigh the cost. Moreover, the cost of organic dog shampoo is not that different compared to regular dog hair care. Some of the dog hair care products cost as much as natural shampoo for humans. However, there are many varieties of shampoo and you will not held prisoner to one type of shampoo.
The benefits of using organic shampoo for your pet are that it provides a less harmful way to clean your pet. All organic dog shampoos are much milder than industrial shampoo. Dog's skin and hair can be affected the same way as human skin. The harsher the product, the easier it is for your dog to be damaged. You will be able to bathe your dog more often and give the attention that your pet needs.
If you have no idea what type of shampoo is right for your pet; you should try talking to a veterinarian for advice on the best organic dog shampoo. Also, while you are at the vet, you should perform a skin test so that you know what type of plants irritate your pet's skin. This way you can determine which organic product is suitable for your dog.

You would never think of giving poison to cats, but you may be doing it by accident. In fact, overloading your cats' diet with some hairball remedies can prevent absorption of a vital vitamin.
Many of us rely on vitamin supplements to provide a nutritional boost to our human diets. Perhaps you even thought about supplementing your cat's diet with vitamins. After all, didn't you read somewhere that kittens with diets low in vitamin D develop rickets? Or what about older cats with low levels of vitamin D in their diet suffering from brittle bones?
These problems are totally possible, but such deficiencies are rare in today's cat diet world. That said, it is possible that you may cause your cat to have a vitamin D deficiency simply by treating him for hairballs. You could be literally giving poison to cats when you treat them with hairball remedies that have a mineral oil or petroleum jelly base.
If your cat 'just loves' his petroleum based hairball remedy and you 'just love' giving it to him, you both may need to back off the program a bit. Excessive use of this type of hair ball remedy can interfere with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, including vitamin D.
Now that you know better that indulging your cats with this type of hairball remedy don't be tempted to add vitamin D back into their diet. Just continue to feed a high quality cat food which is full of vitamins cats need. Now that your cats are off the petroleum based product, their digestive system will be able to absorb the vitamin D again.
Let's now consider completely removing this 'petroleum based' product from your cats diets. Would you swallow something made of petroleum? That's right - have a pint of oil to goo up your insides. Its really not a far stretch to consider this as something close to giving poison to cats.
Switch your cats over to an herbal hairball treatment. There are herbal compounds that provide a gentle yet effective solution to cat hairballs. Psyllium nigrum is a very high source of dietary fiber while Aloe ferox (a well known medicinal herb) is known for its beneficial effect on digestive functioning. Nux vom is a proven homeopathic remedy often prescribed for indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, violent retching and abdominal cramp.
Its easy to give this herbal remedy and if you have a cat who hates the other products, bets are that he'll never even notice when you add a bit to his canned cat food. Just give 1/2 capsule 2 times daily for 10 days, followed by 1/2 capsule once daily as a maintenance dose for cats who are prone to nasty hairballs.

Are you worrying that your cat has a urinary or kidney problem? After you finish this article you'll understand what tests are run for cats in kidney failure. The key to lengthening your cat's life is to contact your vet as soon as possible to have a a series of diagnostic tests run. Your veterinarian will perform blood and urine tests to check for key symptoms for a cat experiencing chronic kidney failure.
There are terms used to convey the condition for cats in kidney failure. Acute kidney (or renal) failure in your cat is means complete organ failure where the kidneys stop working. Acute renal failure in cats happens quickly without much warning. It can affect both young and old cats. This type of kidney disease is almost always fatal but if treated immediately and aggressively, the kidneys may regain normal functions and your cat may live a longer life.
The other phrase you may hear is chronic kidney failure. This is the most common disease and is usually experienced by an aging cat. As cats age their major organs have weakened, including their kidneys. Sadly, by the time you notice the symptoms for cats in kidney failure about 70% of your cat's kidney functions are already in trouble. Chronic kidney failure is a progressive disease and eventually your cat will die from it. However, the earlier the disease is discovered the longer you can keep your cat comfortable for months or even years.
The most dependable diagnosis comes from the blood and urine tests taken from your cat. Your vet may also palpitate the kidney area and check for small, shriveled kidneys. He may take x-rays or an ultrasound too.
Blood Tests
When your vet tests for the BUN level, he is testing for the Blood Urea Nitrogen level in your cat's blood. The BUN is a chemical that the liver makes from ammonia. After production, BUN is excreted into the kidneys, which increases in some diseases especially for cats in kidney failure. The test also is a marker for dehydration in your cat or even bladder stones.
These blood tests also show the amount of creatinine in your cat's blood. Creatinine is the breakdown product of muscle and normally is excreted by the kidneys. If your cat's creatinine level is abnormal it helps confirm that your cat's elevated BUN level was caused by kidney failure.
Urine Tests
When a healthy cat is dehydrated the proteins show at a concentrated level. Your veterinarian will check for signs of infection by evaluating your cat's urine. He will also evaluate the concentration of proteins. For cats in kidney failure, this protein concentration is not there which is key to determining if your cat's kidneys are functioning properly or not.

People all over the world regard their animals as family members. They could keep small creatures, or 100 pound Labs. These pets can expect the same treatment as their human companions; even down to their pet health care plan.
According to recent polls, pet health care spending has risen over 40% in the last two years to roughly $10 billion dollars. According to the founder of Pet's Best Insurance, Jack Stephens, over $2 million of that was spent on pet insurance. By all accounts, that number is expected to top $1 billion by 2011 which makes pet health insurance one of the fastest growing insurance products on the market today.
These pet insurance plans can be very straightforward or complicated, depending on your needs. While most often taken out on the family dog or cat, they are available for almost all pets and livestock.
Like any insurance, you don't know when you're going to need it. Unfortunately with animals, if they end up having surgery the costs can spiral so quickly. Equally, pedigree dogs are more prone to certain conditions.
The ASPCA has noticed a surge in the number of people contacting their office in recent months. Well meaning owners who simply can no longer afford the often veterinary care that their pets require.
Generally, pet insurance cover bills due to injuries and illnesses. They also cover preventative care and vaccinations. Some plans will also cover a portion of obedience training costs and flea/tick medications.
These plans also cover micro chipping to help locate a lost pet and some will even cover the cost of advertising and rewards to help locate your lost pet. Some even offer travel reimbursement if a trip is cut short due to a pet related cancellation.
You must be aware of the terms of each policy though, and not shop purely based on price. This is an important family member, and adequate coverage should be your first goal.
Pet health insurance is becoming more common every day. It's a great feeling knowing that your pet will be taken care of no matter what sort of emergency comes up.
Making the life altering choice between euthanasia and an expensive medical treatment is never easy. According to Wallace Sife, who has counseled hundreds of guilt filled pet owners as founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement, "There is no right answer."
There is no hard and fast advice on what to do when a pet needs emergency care. It does appear, however, that pet insurance is the financial cure, though it may end up making the emotional decision a little easier.
These are the basics behind this issue, and it is important to do your research so you know exactly what you are covered for and how much this will cost. A simple internet search should yield a variety of insurance providers, and you should compare their websites to see which gives you the best deal. Do not just go for the cheapest option - make sure that your pet is covered so that you will be prepared and looked after if anything does go wrong with their health.

Most Americans treat their pets as members of the family. No matter if someone has a fluffy four-legged creature or a slithery reptilian companion, they will demand similar services for their pets as they do for themselves " and for an every growing number of people, that includes a pet care plan.
Pet health insurance is one of the fastest growing lines of insurance offered today. This market is expected to top $1 billion dollars by 2011. Jack Stephens, founder of Pet's Best Insurance, pet health care costs have soared over 40% in the last to years totaling $10 billion dollars. Only about $250 million of this however was spent on health insurance.
Pet health insurance is a health insurance policy for your pet. This could be almost any animal, but most often is a dog or cat. Much like human insurance, you can choose a policy as simple or elaborate as you need.
Like all insurance plans, you always hope you don't need the coverage. But often when dealing with pets, the need is sudden. And, if surgery or emergency treatment is needed, the cost can often soar into the thousands of dollars. Even purebred or pedigreed animals aren't safe from this fact, and they often have more genetic troubles.
In recent months, the ASPCA has noticed a significant increase in the number of people calling it who simply cannot afford the routine health care that their animal requires.
Pet care plans generally covers vet bills that arise from illnesses and injuries. Many plans also offer preventative care, and liability coverage in case your pet damages someones property or person.
These plans also cover micro chipping to help locate a lost pet and some will even cover the cost of advertising and rewards to help locate your lost pet. Some even offer travel reimbursement if a trip is cut short due to a pet related cancellation.
When selecting a policy, it is vital that pet owners check the terms and conditions that apply, rather than being swayed simply by price.

Another similarity is the cost of the shampoo. Organic dog hair care shampoo has virtually the same cost as regular dog shampoo. There are many different types of shampoo to choose from and the important factor is that you have an assortment of products to best fit your dog's beauty. Not all hair care products are the same and the same goes for your dog's skin. Even though organic products are better and milder than traditional shampoos; they can still make your dog's skin break out into a rash. This might be caused by your dog being allergic to specific ingredients in the shampoo. However, since all ingredients are natural, the skin irritation is probably due to an allergy from a plant.
Sometimes dog shampoo can irritate your pet's skin. The reason may be that your dog is allergic to some of the essential oils that are contained in the product. The important factor is that the ingredients are not harmful to your pet.
Lastly, make sure that the shampoo is recognized by the USDA for being 100% organic and that it meets the organic food standards. Although there might not be anything wrong with an unaccredited shampoo, are you not willing to give the best organic shampoo to your pet?

The benefits or organic shampoo can be passed on to your pets. Animals can develop skin irritation from harsh dog shampoos. Your pet will appreciate your kindness by switching a gentle organic dog shampoo.
Organic pet shampoo comes in different scents and even though this product is targeted to a niche audience, there is still enough variety to choose the right scent for your pet. Most scents come from citrus fruits and your pet will also enjoy the natural scents of aloe vera, jasmine, coconut oil as well as many other natural smells. Shampoos come in different prices and brands. Some are just as expensive as natural shampoo for humans. The key point is that you're not going to be limited to selection when it comes to choosing the right product for your pet.
Another similarity is the cost of the shampoo. Organic dog hair care shampoo has virtually the same cost as regular dog shampoo. There are many different types of shampoo to choose from and the important factor is that you have an assortment of products to best fit your dog's beauty. This might be caused by your dog being allergic to specific ingredients in the shampoo. However, since all ingredients are natural, the skin irritation is probably due to an allergy from a plant.
If you are confused on what type of natural shampoo treatment is best for you dog, go see your local veterinarian for recommendations. Also, it is recommended that you test your dog's skin for food allergies. That way, you can determine which shampoo works well for your dog without irritating its skin.
Lastly, make sure that the shampoo is recognized by the USDA for being 100% organic and that it meets the organic food standards. Although there might not be anything wrong with an unaccredited shampoo, are you not willing to give the best organic shampoo to your pet?

You may have heard the stories of canned and boxed pet foods turning out to be dangerous leading to a recall of these types of products. Some dog owners who worry about pet food recalls are becoming quite skeptical about the quality of commercial dog food. To this extent they are looking for safe, nutritious foods for their dogs and opting to make home cooked dog food rather than buy commercial foods.
Making your pets food yourself is the best way to ensure that your best friend is getting a complete and balanced nourishment. Some dog foods are good, yet some are made with undesirable additives such as dyes, preservatives and fillers. However, if you make home cooked dog food, all it contains is the top quality meat, grains and vegetables you normally buy for your family at the market.
For years, dogs were fed almost exclusively from table scraps (which were often not a healthy option) or some other form of homemade dog food. Today, pet owners have become dependent on buying commercial dog food as it seems easier than preparing it. They would probably be very surprised to learn how easy and convenient it is to make your own home cooked dog food with the proper recipes.
Should you decide to prepare home cooked dog food, you may find it convenient to cook for your family and your dog at the same time. Human grade ingredients are used in the preparation of home cooked dog food recipes, so it is not necessary to use different dishes, pans or utensils when cooking for both. To save time, you may find it convenient to prepare batches of food in quantity, then freeze or refrigerate the extra portions.
Dont start preparing your dogs meals until you have consulted your vet. You should seek guidance as to which ingredients are right for your dog's breed and any other concerns. The doctor might even suggest that vitamin and/or mineral supplements be added to the home cooked dog food.
One of the best things you can do to safeguard the health, energy and vitality of your dog is to give them food that you've prepared for them yourself. Home cooked dog food that is formulated from special recipes provides much better nutritional value than many commercially available foods. And you might be surprised to discover just how easy and convenient it is to keep your dog healthy and happy by preparing food for him. Another issue that you may not have considered is that by making your pets food more digestible there will be less dog poop around the yard too.
You'll be happy to know that there are many home cooked dog food recipes available. And if you like cooking for your dog, you can make special treats for him as well. Not only will your dog love the special foods you make, you will have the peace of mind of knowing he is getting safe and healthy food.

I had just started my very first online offbeat cartoons and funny gifts venture, and stopped immediately my daily creative routine. Having grown up in rural Mississippi, I was used to the hot muggy afternoons which often brought tornadoes and rain. Thor was about twelve years old but was staring at the walls and not responding to my voice. He had been very active up until then. I got him to the veterinarian within ten minutes and the diagnosis was some rare ailment that dogs that age often get similar to seizures and he must be put down. I had been a dog lover and owner since age four. My intuition made me skeptical of the veterinarians conclusion instead I decided to keep Thor comfortable for a few days at home. Once Thor was resting I urgently began searching the Internet for alternative solutions and discovered Dr. Ian Billinghurst an Aussie author/vet/surgeon.
Dr. Ian Billinghurst was not easy to find. He is an Australian holistic/but also also practices traditional western medicine and surgery. He had just penned the controversial book titled Give Your Dog A Bone. It entailed a diet plan that was basically raw foods, bought at the grocery preferably organic. The special recipe contained lots of raw meaty bones and occasionally a blend of vegetables, raw burger, etc. in a blender. I discovered that raw organic tripe is one of the most perfect foods for domestic animals. The first time I fed Thor a raw chicken wing, I was mortified. I had heard all my life this was the surest way to kill a dog, but I was desperate. I could already see and feel his soul energy fading. Thor surprisingly took to this new diet, after not eating at all or drinking very much water for several days, and even then only by dropper. I switched his water to bottled spring and ordered herb tinctures and live flash-glanced vitamins with live minerals as well. He was devouring these raw foods, from hamburger to raw chicken to carrots to pears to romaine lettuce (and a blend of them all).
Slowly, very slowly, I could see him coming back to life. The biggest problem was the terrible odor and coloration of his stools and urine for the first month. Dr. Billinghurst warned me that would happen. The toxins of commercial pet food were leaving his system. One morning, about a month after beginning Thor on the B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods), Thor jumped on my bed, something he had never done prior to the diet. He was wagging his tail and ready to go out and play. He grabbed his leash and was ready for a walk. He didn't want a short walk but was willing to go with me my usual five miles. He kept up with me without even panting or having a shortness of breath. The vet had also advised me that in addition to the mystery disease, Thor also suffered from level two heart diseases. I started giving him the same herbs I was taking for my heart disease such as hawthorn berry and very hot cayenne tincture. I stopped all vaccinations as advised and bought homeopathic nosode vaccines ordered online from an only pet care service in California. His daily diet also consisted of fresh organic fruit and vegetables (and occasionally yogurt mixed in a blender. He loved it all and devoured every meal like a wolf in a hen house, whereas in the days of feeding him commercial dog food, even the best, he approached it with great disappointment and rarely finished a bowl (usually left it less than half-finished).
This should have been no surprise. According to Dr. Billinghurst and now other experts on the subject of the raw pet diet, dogs digestive systems have not evolved very much from their earlier days, before domestication, when they were still wolves, just as cat's systems had not since they were lions. Thor's energy level kept growing and growing as did his wanting to be near me and play at every given chance, whereas he used to mostly lay around and sleep during his pre-barf days. Up until age twenty, he continued to greatly enjoy our walks, usually three to five miles. It was only when he was about twenty one, that his phase two heart disease changed to phase four, and I knew that was dangerous. It was only then, almost a decade since his last vet visit, except for checkups, that I was forced to also use allopathic medicines, such as Lasix for his heart. I did so very hesitantly, as I was aware this type medicine would eventually hurt his liver and kidneys, which of course it did. In his final year, he had several near-death experiences in which I rushed him to the vet. I was already resolved that if he were in any kind of discomfort, or his quality of life was compromised, I would sadly have my best friend put down. The vet insisted he would not put him down. After all Thor had made three major comebacks at age twenty-two which he considered nothing less than a miracle. After a final try of a body flush, I could tell he was almost gone. I asked the vet what to do. He said to take him home, there was still a chance. I knew there was not. I could see his life and soul fading from his eyes. I knew him too well. He had been by my side, by my desk at home where I work, for a decade. I said I would take him home but I ordered a bottle of morphine which I administered around the clock as I slept on the floor cradling him during his final night. I had to put the morphine pill down his throat and set my alarm clock for every three hours so as to wake up and give him another. On the 6 am alarm, I opened the bottle to give Thor his pill, but his life-force was now gone. I looked down and saw there was no breath, no heartbeat. Even though I knew he was "in a better place" I cried for weeks. I looked closely at his face and he was still smiling. He always had a smile through life, and now it stayed with him even in death.
It was snowing heavily outside, icy, and it was hard to carry his almost forty pound body up the hill. He had a favorite hill behind our home where he chased birds, squirrels, eagles, chipmunks, rabbits and every animal imaginable. I built a small casket for him and a headstone. I had a shovel in the other hand. I lay him down in the casket, and begin digging, first through the snow and ice and finally through the hard dirt until the hole was about four feet deep. I lay him in it, said a prayer, and filled it cold and shivering and still crying. I carefully placed the coffin in the ground and filled it up. I placed the headstone. It's epitaph read, To Thor: A Special Dog Who Brought Only Joy & Happiness To All. Loved and missed more than he will ever know. Your best friend, Rick
Almost two years has passed since I buried Thor on that snowy day. I grieved much longer and was more intense than I had calculated lasting nearly half a year; and still think of him often. Friends were suggesting I go immediately to the shelter and adopt another. I could not do it then but now I know I will one day. It is after all what Thor would have wanted. I can only thank God, and thank Dr. Ian Billinghurst the Father of The Raw Food Diet, and Shirleys Wellness Cafe, for giving Thor and I another beautiful ten years together. Although one veterinarian had decided it was time to put Thor down, it was, in reality, time for Thor to begin living. Thanks to the B.A.R.F. diet, I had ten more wonderful years with the best dog anyone could ever imagine.

Many pet owners want the best for their animals, in particular the kind of food that they are being fed. They search for healthy foods for their pets put it can often be confusing or impossible to determine the good from the bad. More people are providing home cooked dog food for their pets, rather than use commercial foods, especially after the recent rash of recalled commercial dog food stories in the papers and on television.
Although not all dog foods are bad, some commercially available dog food can contain some rather undesirable ingredients, such as artificial colors and fillers. But you can ensure that your pet never eats these types of ingredients and that he is getting all of the nutrition he needs by cooking your own dog food at home. Your home cooked dog food will contain only the ingredients youve selected to put into it, so you can be sure that your dog is getting only quality, human grade meat, vegetables and grains.
Not so long ago it was commonplace for pets to eat food prepared at home. Then pet owners started to depend on the ease of opening a can or box of factory made dog food products. But, contrary to what you might think, preparing home cooked dog food yourself is actually not an inconvenience.
Many people who prepare a pets meals at home do so while cooking for the rest of the family. Since home cooked dog food contains the same ingredients people consume, you dont have to be concerned about which cookware you reserve for this activity. One time-saving and labor-sparing approach is to prepare the food in large quantities, some of which can be refrigerated or frozen for use at a later date.
Dont start preparing your dogs meals until you have consulted your vet. You should seek guidance as to which ingredients are right for your dog's breed and any other concerns. The doctor might even suggest that vitamin and/or mineral supplements be added to the home cooked dog food.
It makes sense to start cooking home made dog food. If you follow formulated recipes you can provide well balanced meals for your pet. You will know the quality of the ingredients that go into the food (which is often impossible with commercial foods). Your pet will be happier and healthier with more vitality. Once you get into the routine, you will find it is actually not a big hassle on your time or finances for a noticeable improvement of your dog's energy level.
You'll be happy to know that there are many home cooked dog food recipes available. And if you like cooking for your dog, you can make special treats for him as well. Not only will your dog love the special foods you make, you will have the peace of mind of knowing he is getting safe and healthy food.
