Border Terrier's are known for their jumping ability and agility. They are very intelligent with a level temperament. Many times you will see Border Terrier's as therapy dogs due to their capacity for independent thinking.

Border Terriers have an amazing ability to jump to great heights despite the shortness of their legs. They were long time foxhunters used for flushing fox out of their holes. They are natural born runners and need to be exercised regularly and love to be active.

Beware of these little runners, they have been known to chase many a small animal like cats, mice and others. It's in their blood but you can break the habit if the Border Terrier is raised with the animal. But when you are outside your domain, keep an eye on them because they can disappear in a flash if something catches their eye.

Keep an eye on your Border Terrier when it comes to small toys around the house. They are known to chew, destroy and consume these little stuffed toys. Watch out for them become lethargic, they may be unable sleep or aren't interested in affection. These can be signs that the dog has ingesting something.

There are times with these dogs when they just love to sit and watch all the activity going on around them. You can be out for a leisurely walk and suddenly your Border Terrier will plop down and refuse to continue. Tiredness can often bring this type of behavior on as well.

There are a few health problems common to the Border Terrier such as seizures, juvenile cataracts, hip Dysplasia, retinal diseases to name a few. They can also be slow to anesthetize even though they are sensitive to anesthetics. They can also have a very high threshold for pain.

Border Terrier's fall in the medium size category weighing in at between 11 and 15 pounds with the females usually weighing the least. Their coats are dirt and weather resistant that requires a weekly brushing. They do shed but the weekly brushing can help with this issue as well as hand stripping a couple of time a year.

Command training with these dogs from an early age on will allow you to have better control over your overly impulsive pup. Being consistent and providing them with adequate exercise can keep them in line. Their eagerness to please and love for people makes them a good dog for family pets.

There are times with the Border Terrier where they can become confrontational although this is not typical behavior. They get along well with other animals in the house and like with most dogs, socialization at an early age can help with aggression issues. Border Terrier's have limitations that can be pushed so keep a close eye on them with other around.

Believe it or not, cats can get diabetes just like people do. It is just as life-threatening and requires just as much care. This is not to say it's hard to care for a diabetic cat; it isn't.

You may not notice the symptoms at first but as soon as you do, get him in to see his veterinarian right away. The first thing you may notice is excessive water consumption with frequent urination. He will also have an increased appetite, yet dramatic weight loss. You may also see lethargy.

After time, he may also develop neuropathy. This is a common side effect of diabetes. With neuropathy, a cat will walk on his haunches instead of his paws. This will distort his posture and give him a hunch back. He will also have difficulty making what used to be simple jumps.

In essence, what is happening with neuropathy is that the signals being sent from the brain to make the muscles move do not make it back to the muscles. So, your cat will begin his jump but the muscles will fail before the jump is complete. He will miss the target and fall. It is scary to witness. If you have not noticed other symptoms of diabetes but see this behavior, get to the vet as soon as possible.

The good news is that once the diabetes is under control, the neuropathy will correct itself. Controlling diabetes will require giving the cat insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. A failing pancreas raises blood sugar levels. Insulin is usually given via injections twice per day. There are insulin pills available but most cats will not respond to these. There are different types of insulin that use certain types of syringes. Your vet can determine which type is best for your cat.

Type and amount of insulin is determined with a series of tests. First there is an initial 'glucose curve.'This is just testing the blood every four hours to monitor the blood sugar throughout the day. Different insulin doses will be given and more curves will be done over time to establish which dose keeps your cat's blood sugar stable throughout the day.

Once the right dose is determined, the injections must be given regularly, usually twice a day. Missing a dose is not generally an issue, although several missed doses will cause sugar levels to stay elevated. The most important thing to keep in mind regarding insulin is that too much is even worse than too little. Too much insulin is extremely dangerous. Seizures and even death can occur instantly. Keep a record of shots given to ensure that he is getting his insulin an also that he isn't inadvertently given shots by two different people.

Be sure to keep up with regular check-ups recommended by the veterinarian. This is always important but it is especially important in the case of diabetes. Unlike humans or even dogs, the pancreas of a cat can actually 're-learn' to function properly over time. What this means is that a cat's pancreas may actually start to produce insulin on its own. If you continue to give insulin, your cat will get too much and overdose. Again, this can lead to death.

Living with a diabetic cat is not complicated. It just takes care and dedication to proper care. In most diabetes cases cats may not even require a special diet. Just stay on top of the situation. A little ear scratching will be appreciated too.

It is critical to be aware of what you should look for regarding diabetes symptoms and the impact on your health. The Diabetes Advice Online services gives you information and details on the steps you should take when you might have diabetes.

Is your dog's constant itching and chewing getting on your nerves? Well, did you know that your dog could actually be allergic to fleas? Their chewing and scratching is a nuisance but can you imagine how uncomfortable they must feel?

This allergy can start as early as a puppy but can also manifest itself at any time in a dog's life. Adult fleas do the biting but they cannot live for long if they are not on your cat or dog. Well, that makes me feel just a little bit better.

Did you know that adult fleas are the only ones that bite? Once they fall off the host dog or cat, they don't live. That's good to know, however, the process continues because the adult flea leaves behind eggs that will hatch and continue the process.

If you want to keep your dog flea free, then you need to continue treatment. The symptoms can be painful to the dog and an annoyance to the owners. This chronic condition left untreated can lead to behavioral problems in your pet as well.

Symptoms of an infestation will include chewing and scratching. Check your pet for signs of fleas or flea dirt by using a flea comb. If there are no visible signs of fleas, your vet might recommend testing for mites.

Fleas can also bite humans so if you think you might have an infestation in the house or yard, it's best to treat those areas as well. Really it only takes a couple of bites to set your dog's flea allergy in motion. Treating the dog without treating the home or yard can just lead to another infestation.

As you can imagine, this condition can be very painful for your dog with the chronic itching. Diagnosis and immediate treatment is critical to relieve these symptoms. Flea dips and shampoos can be used as well as a topical applied to the knap of the neck used monthly are extremely useful.

Quick diagnosis and treatment will help relive your dog from his suffering. Chewing and itching along with hair loss are sure signs of a flea allergy. Additionally you might see lesions in numerous places over the dog's body.

Remember that continuous treatment is necessary to keep your dog flea free. Initially you might have to give your dog a couple of dip baths before you notice the fleas disappearing as well as treating the interior of you home. You owe it to your pet to be diligent in the battle to rid them of fleas, and they will appreciate you for it!

Mange in dogs is also known as Demodicosis. It is an inflammatory disease caused by a mite called Demodex. The type of mite can determine the severity of this disease.

There are several side effects of mange again, depending on the type of mite inhibiting the hair follicles and skin. Mange can cause genetic disorders; immune system problems and lesions just to name a few. Mange is not only a condition known to affect dogs but cats as well.

Demodectic mange comes in two forms. It can be localized to a particular area of the body or can be general and cover the dogs entire body. Making a determination as to which type your pet has will determine the treatment your vet will administer.

While many vets will say they do not know what might cause mange, some believe that dogs can be predisposed to this disease due to an immune system problem. Generalized mange will appear as redness of the skin and patches of lesions over the entire body. Localized mange will be around the face, trunk or legs of the dog.

There are three identifiable mites that are known to cause mange. While transmissions of two are unknown, Demodex canis has been determined to get into the hair follicle. It is assumed that this is transferred from the mother to the newborn through nursing.

Diagnosis can be made in two ways. First it is ruled out that your dog does not just have an infection of the hair follicles. The vet will take a scrape of the skin and test that or if possible, test a urine sample.

It is very possible for the localized type of mange to cure itself over time. However, the generalized mange can require a lifetime of medication and lime-sulphur dips are used to relieve symptoms. There are some cases that are just so severe that treatment is not an option, therefore it is best to evaluate this with your vet in order to do what would be best for the dog.

Once a diagnosis of mange is determined, treatment will be advised. It is important to remember that you will need to be diligent with treatment upon diagnosis to keep the disease from spreading. Skin scrapings will need to be tested until it is determined that mites are no longer found.

Remember that if your pet has generalized mange, it's best that you not breed it. Prevention can be simply maintaining a healthy diet for your dog. Regular grooming and good health may be all you need to keep your dog free of mange.

Dermatophilosis is a skin disease that animals can get no matter the age or gender, although the symptoms may vary. Usually contracted from farm animals like sheep, cows and horses, it is more prevalent in humid and warm climates. Typically, dogs with wet skin that have infestations like fleas and ticks have increased risk.

If you start to notice a yellow-crusted spot around your dog's body or head, he may suffer from Dermatophilosis. This condition is very common in cats and dogs but is treatable. Usually when you remove a crusty area, you will see a cluster of hairs underneath due to the impacted follicle.

Testing from the vet is necessary for a diagnosis. If the dog is scratching a lot and you notice pus from this area, it more than likely is Dermatophilosis. Proper diagnosis is needed to determine treatment.

Diagnosis it most important if your dog is exhibiting symptoms associated with Dermatophilosis. Take your dog to the vet so a sample can be taken and tested. If it is determined to be Dermatophilosis, the vet will prescribe medication for your dog.

The vet will recommend a topical medicated shampoo for the dog to be bathed in. Read the directions thoroughly before you begin. We also recommend that you wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.

In order for medications to be effective, we must be consistent with administering them. If the Dermatophilosis is severe, the vet may prescribe an antibiotic to be taken orally. Penicillin is the norm but it could be amoxicillin or another type of antibiotic as well.

It is likely that the vet will schedule a follow-up appointment to check the dog's progress. Usually they will give about 2 or 3 weeks for the medication to take affect. Continue to watch your dog during this time to make sure that the condition does not worsen.

It is not impossible for a family member or caregiver to contract Dermatophilosis from the infected dog. If you are living with a person with a low immune system, you might want to quarantine your dog until its condition clears. If you just want to be on the safe side, it would be best to keep the dog away from the rest of the family for a time.

There are precautions you should take when dealing with topical medications. We suggest that you wear rubber gloves while shampooing your dog to protect you against the transfer of this condition. Following the logical steps will keep you and your family safe.

Making the decision to have a dog or cat is a big step. As pet owners, most of us treat our pets like our children. If we don't have children, then for most of us, our pets are our children.

I have known many people over the years that have had pets prior to kids as a trial run before children. When you think about it, pets can require a much longer commitment just because they don't grow up and move out. This sheds a whole new light on getting a pet right?

I don't think people think about how long of a commitment it is to raise a cat or dog. Some can live 20+ years. That's sometimes longer than our children stay with us and you are feeding your pet, taking them to the doctor and boarding them when you take a vacation.

At least with children, there comes a time when they can stay on their own. Then they move away and go to college, eventually marrying and finally starting their own life with someone else. Well, I know that children do come and go and are always going to need us to some extent, but cat's and dog's can't survive without us.

Loving your pets is what we do unconditionally. But had we realized that we were actually taking on a longer commitment then our children per say, this might have made us rethink that decision. Our pet can bring us great joy and companionship, but they are always there.

Don't' get me wrong; I would not trade either my cats or dog for anything. But when my daughter wanted the cats, little did I know that she would be gone before they were. Now, here I am, my daughter's off and enjoying her life of carefree comings and goings and I have to hire a pet sitter.

I never realized it until now. It's funny to me remembering when my daughter was becoming increasingly independent and getting ready to venture out on her own. I felt sadness that she would be leaving soon, but now realizing I have the cats to keep me company is a blessing.

All our pets desire is food, affection and a warm lap to sit in. Love your pets like you've loved your children and they will be there for you when the kids have come and gone. They are all gifts and we can't keep them forever, but we are lucky enough to have them for a time and that is the true gift.

Now this should make you think long and hard about your decision to get a pet. As long as you realize that getting a pet is just like a child, a lifetime commitment, then you can make the responsible choice for you and your family. Just remember that the pets can last longer then your kids, but the kids will always come home.

Is your new puppy or adult adopted dog having a problem with uncontrollable peeing during play, while excited or when it's scared? Well, this is not uncommon in puppies or adult dogs that have been abused. Submissive or excited peeing is easy to cure but you have to be consistent.

After first taking your dog to the vet for a checkup to make sure there are not medical problems; then we know that your dog suffers from submissive/excitement issues. This is very common in puppies and very submissive adult dogs so don't worry, it can be fixed. You will be surprised at how fast we can correct this behavior.

Being dominant over your dog or looking into its eyes without any peeing we can determine that your dog's issue is with excitement. However, if you are noticing that the peeing is occurring when you are scolding the dog or it's in a dominated situation then it is safe to say your dog suffers from a submissive issue. Many dogs have these problems but they are easily dealt with.

As with children, dogs work well with praise. Teach your dog a couple of tricks like sitting, stay or roll over and then reward him for his success. With a submissive dog, approach at their level, pet under the chin not on the head and naturally, no yelling.

If there are accidents with the peeing, don't respond, just clean it up. But remember to praise the dog when they pee in their appropriate spot. Rewards and positive affirmation are always the best medicine.

Having a puppy that pee's from excitement during their first year is not uncommon. Adult dogs will get excited too when you arrive home from work or have guests, but just don't react to the accident. Keep a calm tone, clean the mess and remember to make a big deal when they do go in the right place.

While playing with your puppy, he can get excited and pee so make sure you do all the playing out in the yard or in a protected area. As we mentioned before, if there are accidents, do not react and eventually you will see this problem subside. We can't use the word praise enough so remember to make sure you acknowledge the good deed.

High energy greetings upon arrival home can also set off the excitement peeing. If you arrive home and the dog is excited and jumping around, we suggest you ignore him until he calms down. Keeping the excitement to a minimum can help correct the peeing problem.

Most dogs greet you at the door with an overwhelming excitement. Do not encourage this behavior, instead ignore the dog and only greet him when he is calm. Therefore you are sending him positive affirmation that calm is better than excited, eliminating the excitement peeing.

Many new dog owners are totally unaware of the needs of their pet. They feel like they need to feed them, let them out in the yard and give them a little love and that's all. Well, there is a lot more to it then that.

New dog owners many times have one main complaint. Their new puppy is keeping them awake at night. Their solution is to put the puppy in the bed with them and off to sleep they go. First big mistake made as a new dog owner.

As we try and eliminate the problem of loosing our bed to the new dog, we are faced with another issue. The dog is not sleeping at night and spends it's time roaming around whining, barking and keeping everyone awake. Everyone is crabby and the house is up in roars.

Sometimes these dogs that bark continuously when they are not with you are suffering from separation anxiety. One easy solution is to put the dog's bed in the room with you or a family member. Moving the dog's bed or crate into a room where he is sleeping with a family member should fix the problem.

Sleeping problems can be eliminated if you will crate your dog. Training them from the beginning that the crate is a safe place for them to go at bed time is a good thing. I know you feel bad doing this but remember is a good place for the dog and can help with the sleeplessness.

If you have a dog that you just can't cure of the separation anxiety issues, some vets suggest getting the dog a friend. Getting another dog can give the anxious dog a companion and tends to help relieve the separation issues. They will play during the day while you are at work and tire themselves out.

Exercise is a key part of a dog's day and should not be avoided even if they have a yard to run in. Walking the dogs for about 30 minutes and give them some socialization which they enjoy, just as we do. Hyper dogs really do need to be worn out and playing with them in the park is a good way to do this.

Many people feel that since they have a nice big yard for the dog to run around, that they are getting their exercise. Actually the opposite happens. As you are working during the day, it's more likely that your dog is laying in the sun or shade sleeping all day.

Younger more active dogs are in definite need of exercising. As dogs get older, they will slow down but you still need to take them out for walks and socialization. Being a responsible pet owner will provide your dog with a happy and healthy life and afford you a good night's sleep!

As many of us probably already know from experience, there is a common bone and arthritic condition that larger and giant dogs are prone to. This condition can present itself early in a pup's life, especially between the ages of 4 to 10 months. This abnormal growth of bone, cells or tissue can be managed but it requires a vet's intervention.

This Dysplasia is most always found in the giant and large breed dogs. Usually Chows, Retrievers like Labradors and Goldens, as well as Rottweilers. There is a similar condition more prominent in males then females.

Males and females as we said can both be afflicted with Dysplasia. More common though in males more then female is the condition where the bone fragment is found in the inner surface of the upper ulna. This condition will be found in the foreleg just below the elbow joint.

If your dog is showing signs of forelimb lameness after exercising which in turn causes stiffness, they might suffer from Dysplasia. They can also show signs by extending or flexing their elbow away from their body. However, not all dogs will show signs or symptoms for Dysplasia.

Whatever the reason for this condition, we suggest that you seek out a professional for their opinion. This condition can be genetic, caused by nutrition or during development. That's why we suggest you carefully observe your pup to see if it begins to display signs of Dysplasia.

The symptoms can mean a number of things like joint trauma, possible infection or even some sort of arthritis. The Doctor will take x-rays of the affected limb as well as the other and run more tests before coming to a conclusion. If it is determined to be Elbow Dysplasia, then surgery might be recommended.

After the surgery, you should apply ice compresses throughout the day to help with swelling and additional medications might be prescribed. You should keep your dog contained to minimize any movement for the first couple of days. Give assistance with movement to the dog and encourage some movement.

For future reference, you can take preventative measures for this condition by not promoting rapid growth of your dog. Manage their weight gain as they grow and feed them accordingly. In addition, do not breed a dog that has been diagnosed with this condition since it is genetic.

Large dogs are prone to this condition so it's not anything to be overly worried about. However, if you purchased your dog from a breeder, better to let them know about the condition. Dogs with Dysplasia can live long happy lives; just remember to keep up with their yearly checkups.

Taking care of our pets to the best of our ability is the responsibility of any pet owner. However, sometimes we are not always certain what is best for our pets. One thing we do know that is very important is our pet's diet.

Dog, like humans have needs where their diet is concerned. But also like humans, some might need more or less of certain things so it's always best to check with your vet once you decide on a certain diet. With dogs having a major part in our family's lives, we need to make sure we provide the proper nutritional needs.

Something that we don't think about is that dog food for dogs have certain requirements. Being the carnivores that they are, we forget that they also need vegetables and grasses as part of their diet. Get familiar with what your dog's dietary needs are to make sure that they are being fed a healthy diet.

Back in the times when dogs were responsible for their own nourishment, their diets were different than from today. They hunted live prey and ate it uncooked coupled with a little grass and whatever the fruits and berries of the season were. Today, can you even conceive of your dog eating fresh game?

Today it is not near as socially acceptable for dogs to eat their kills. I know that it's hard for us domesticated humans to understand but dogs and cat as like most animals are born hunters. We have, over the centuries, trained them to rely on us for their nourishment.

Another thing to consider when choosing a dogs diet is the breed of your dog. In addition to breed, the function of the dog in regards to working can influence the nourishment your dog needs. Lap dogs have a different dietary need than a working farm dog or a dog breed that is from the North Pole.

There are commercial brand foods that are good for dog but be sure you buy the premium top brands. These brands are tested on dogs and they are monitored throughout various stages of their lifetime. The important thing is that they are manufactured with the right dietary needs for dogs.

Some of the downsides to commercial processed foods are that they do contain preservatives that will break down some of the nutritional value of the food. Additives are usually added to meet certain nutritional requirements as well. If you are uncertain about the food, your vet will usually carry good premium brands so check with them.

Man's best friend, that's what our dogs are. Supplement their diet with a daily dose of meats and vegetables if they are on a dry food diet. Diet, exercise and love is all it takes for a long and healthy life and we owe that to them.

There is a condition prone to puppies called malocclusion, which means that their bit does not fit right. This misalignment of the teeth is common and usually does not affect the dog's ability to eat. However, as the dog grows older, the condition can get worse or could correct itself.

By the time a puppy is about 6 months old he should have about 28 teeth. Those teeth are sharp and pointy so make sure your small children are careful while playing with a puppy. By the time the puppy reaches adulthood, he should have 42 teeth.

This condition has minimal risks to your dog but can cause some discomfort and infection if it is a severe case. Usually malocclusion affects the dog's ability to chew or pick up the food. Causes of this disorder are mouth injuries and wear on the teeth.

We have all heard of an overbite, underbite. You will notice this mostly when your dogs closes his mouth and his teeth do not meet which creates a gap. However, the scissor bite malocclusion is one that you will not see in the flat faced dog family.

A common malocclusion in most dogs is the scissor bite. However, the Shih Tsuz, Lhasa Apsos and the Boxer breed are born without the scissor bite. Therefore, when looking for a dog like this, you definitely want to make sure they do not have the scissor bite.

It is not uncommon for puppies to be born with gaps in their teeth. These gaps will usually correct themselves as the puppy gets older and his adult teeth come in. If the problem does not correct by around the 10-month mark, it likely will not correct itself.

Your dog's overbite may worsen as the permanent teeth come in because they are larger and can damage the soft parts of the mouth. Teeth extractions are sometimes necessary. Just check with your vet if you are concerned or notice that the dog is not eating.

Depending on the severity, you might just want to consult your vet for their opinion. I have heard of situation where puppies have been fitted with braces, but I do not think I am ready for that. What will they think of next; contact lenses?

I do feel we owe it to our pets to make their life comfortable. Be consistent with their checkups and vaccinations to extend the life of your dog. After all, they are your family too.

Who would think that your job as a dog owner would involve brushing your dog's teeth? Well, dog's can have bad breath just as people do. When you brush your dog's teeth, then you can enjoy those little doggy kisses with fresh breath, not doggy breath.

Keeping your dog free of plaque and tartar buildup is very important. Also, it helps with the small of your dog's breath, which is good for us as the receiver of those sloppy kisses. Brushing weekly can work wonders on your pretty canine's smile so brush away.

One thing you might be thinking is "how am I supposed to brush my dog's teeth?" Well, since you can't teach your dog to rinse and spit, you use a special doggie toothpaste. Also, you can purchase a finger toothbrush in the dog pet supplies section of your local pet store.

Exercising our dogs usually involves playing with a Frisbee or tossing a ball or sticks. Well, these things can break your dog's teeth. It's a good idea to check your dog on a regular basis for broken or chipped teeth so you can eliminate infections which can result in large vet bills. Keeping our dogs healthy will extend the life of our beloved friends.

Catching a dog's teeth problems early can eliminate having to have the tooth pulled. Infection can lead to other medical problems for your dog so make sure that all infections are addressed early. Your dog can't tell you when he's sick or injured so be proactive with your pet's health.

Broken teeth can cause infections in the mouth that can also lead to bad breath. Remember that when you are brushing your dog's teeth, that you check regularly for anything that doesn't look right. Act immediately to make sure that the infection gets under control quickly.

Make sure when you are playing with your dog, you are using appropriate doggy toys. Teeth can get broken when you are using things that are not dog friendly for your dog to catch or retrieve. Always make sure that the item you are throwing for your dog to catch is size appropriate for your dog.

Check out the dog pet supplies section at your local pet store or ask your vet which are the best toys to get for your dog. There are many soft toys that are easy on the teeth that your dog will love. As many dog owners can tell you, for a dog, it's all about destruction.

As your puppies grow and their adult teeth start coming in, they will become big chewers. Rawhide bones are great for this time in a puppies' life. Changing out the toys as they start to get torn up is safe and will eliminate the risk of choking for your puppy.

Fleas and other parasites have always to be given the top priority by dog owners. The all too common occurrences of flea bite allergy in the case of dogs causes worry to many dog owners every year. This is because flea bites can induce allergic reactions in the area bitten by the fleas. In these cases, the affected area becomes hairless due to the dog scratching itself vigorously.

Heavy flea infestations can cause severe dermatitis in dogs. If the flea bites produce an allergic reaction or even dermatitis in your dog, he/she really ought to be taken to the veterinary doctor, because mostly, the dog will be suffering severe discomfort by now.

The vet will sell you a cream to soothe the itching and reduce the inflammation and some powder or a spray to kill the fleas. Prevention is better than cure and medicated collars are available to treat and prevent an infestation of external parasites like ticks and fleas.

Apart from fleas, other parasites like ticks and lice plus the internal parasites like hookworms, round worms, whip worms etc. can have an adverse effect on the the health of your dog. For example, if hookworms have infected a dog, that dog will almost surely become anaemic soon. The signs of anaemia become more obvious according to the advancement of the hookworm infection.

Hookworm larvae can pass directly through the skin and cause problems inside the affected dogs. Such dogs may reveal lesions due to dermatitis on the paws and on the skin. Frequently, skin rashes are the result in such cases and the affected animal passes loose stools, which are tinged red with blood.

Nearly all dogs and definitely all puppies will have round worms at some time, which is why dogs can sometimes be seen rubbing their bottoms along the floor. However, if round worms are present in very large numbers, affected puppies show a pot belly, which is easily noticeable by the dog's owners themselves. This can result in malnutrition and even death. A dose of piperazine salts is given orally for the treatment of this condition. However, broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate, fenbendazole etc. will also cure this very common condition.

Many drugs have arrived on the market to treat fleas and other parasites, although nowadays, the medical agent called ivermectin seems to be preferred by many dog owners to treat fleas and other parasites in dogs. This drug is available for injection or oral use and is now even available for external application too.

When your dog is experiencing minimal or extensive hair loss, it's best to have him checked for alopecia. This disorder is also known as hair loss and is common in dogs. Left untreated it can cause total hair loss and infection so early diagnosis and treatment is necessary.

Delaying treatment can affect the dog's lymphatic system or their immune system. Alopecia can affect dogs and cats alike. No matter age, breed or gender and it can be gradual so if you notice something out of the ordinary, get your pet to the vet.

Excessive chewing and symmetrical patches of hair loss are early signs of this condition. The areas can get infected quickly so you need to be diligent in seeking treatment for you dog. Early detection can keep this disorder from spreading.

One of the most common causes of hair loss or alopecia is mange. We have all heard of mange which is caused by the mite Demodex. Regular bathing of your dog and thorough checking can help control this nasty disorder.

Alopecia can show itself in many ways and for many reasons. A number of missing patches can be the result of an inflamed hair follicle. Extensive hair loss can be a more serious issue and you might need to have the dog tested. Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done to prevent this.

Several remedies might be involved in treating your dog's condition. Everything from medical shampoos to topical creams and they must be maintained in order to control the problem. Some additional testing might be required such as checking your dog's hormonal levels to see if there are underlying problems.

Dogs are also prone to ringworms, which cause patchy hair loss and reddening of the skin with chaffing. If you suspect that your dog has ringworms, get him to the vet for treatment. Additionally, ringworms are extremely contagious so wash your hands after touching your dog's affected area.

If you are just unsure and want to research these problems first, check the pet dog supplies section at your local pet store. With so many different types of hair loss, it's best to be informed prior to administering treatment.

Our pets can't tell us when something is wrong. Let' be conscientious of our pet's health and watch for early signs of alopecia. Early detection can eliminate the unnecessary discomfort our dogs may experience with this disorder.

As humans, when we are faced with an outside danger we tend to do one or all of three things. Our first reaction is to fight, flee or freeze. These are basic survival instincts that we are born with, just like our pets.

Does you pet exhibit any of these reactions to certain situations? Responding to fearful situations is a normal, routine behavior. If your pet exhibits an abnormal behavior, this can be a unlearned through training over a period of time.

There are a few ways to know whether your dog is suffering from anxiety. Excessive barking or licking; loss of bladder control or whining are some of the most popular symptoms. Separation anxiety tends to be the most common stress for dogs.

Constant and unwarranted fear of a certain sound that can cause your dog to react such as fireworks or thunderstorm is considered a phobia. These are the most common fears that are associated with a phobia for dogs. They may have experienced something in the past and are associating that with a memory causing a response.

Between the ages of 8 and 10 months your pup will experience some severe withdrawal which is normal. Dogs between the ages of 12 and 36 months can begin to start showing signs of anxiety. As your dog matures he might suffer some separation anxiety due to memory loss.

Some signs that your dog might be suffering some phobias or anxieties can vary. Tails tucked, withdrawn behavior or trembling can be identified as signs of mild fear. Some fears and anxieties are hard to diagnosis due to no identifiable stimulus.

What causes your dog to develop these conditions? Illness or a physical condition that causes pain can contribute to the development of phobias, fears or anxiety. Puppies not given proper social exposure until the age of 14 weeks may become fearful.

If you adopt a dog that came from a prior abusive situation, they might suffer some form of anxiety. Separation issues can be the cause of a previous abandonment experience. Whatever the issues are, be sure that you continue to nurture the dog and work on positive affirmation when you see efforts being made to curb the behavior.

Not to worry, most of these behavioral issues can be treated with medication and behavior modification. However, some dogs may not respond to the behavioral modifications. Additionally, medications can take up to 2 weeks in some cases before you will see results.

In this article we are going to talk about ways to cure your flea and tick problems without using harsh chemicals and over the counter methods. We will outline some choices that you can use that will work as well as chemical methods. These methods are softer and easier ways to eliminate these parasites.

For those of us who have children, we are also concerned about our children being susceptible to the dangers of the chemical flea control. When we choose to have the pets, we also need to be responsible for their welfare. Choosing a natural treatment method is healthier for your pet and your family.

You can start with an age old method of brewers yeast and a little bit of garlic mixed into their food. For cats, eliminate the garlic due to the fact that onions and garlic are toxic for cats. For a sweeter option, try squeezing lemon juice or orange juice on their fur and rub it in; acting as a natural repellent.

When you give your dog a bath, notice that the fleas will fall off? Using liquid dish soap with a citrus base and a regular brushing will keep the flea problem under control. Fleas do not take hold of the hair shaft so these solutions are relatively easy.

A good way to protect your yard is to use the "beneficial" nematode worm, which is different than the worm that causes heart worms. This worm feeds on the flea larva and will help prevent fleas from infesting your yard. For you home's interior, vacuum carpets regularly as well as furniture.

Well, we are going to get silly on you now. Ticks, the dreaded blood suckers, live in tall grass in wooded areas and are attracted to the body warmth. A good way to keep this pesky nuisance at bay is to cover your dog. Grab an old T-shirt and some old socks and give your dog protection.

Puppies and babies used to be the all American "chick magnet"; but now there's another ploy for you guys to try. One way we suggest, kooky as it sounds, to deter ticks is to take your old T-Shirt and put it on the dog. And compliment that look with a pair of socks work like leg warmers to protect your dog's legs.

You can use rose geranium oil on the inside of your dog's collar and on their fur to repel ticks. It's a natural repellent for dogs but is not suggested for cats. Cats have severe reactions to all essential oils so steer clear of those for you cats.

Now that you have a few alternate means of combating fleas and ticks, you can feel confident that your pets will remain bug-free throughout the year. Summer time is a particularly hard time where fleas and ticks are concerned so keep your pet happy and critter free by using these safe and environment friendly tricks. Just remember that proper removal of ticks is essential.

You really need to destroy heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs whenever it becomes obvious that your dog is infected by using the appropriate treatment against them. Many products are available to protect our dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites like hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Of the heart worms, fleas and other parasites, fleas can produce a hyper sensitive reaction in the affected animal. Animals infected with fleas scratch their skin very vigorously. Often the scratching becomes so severe that the skin becomes super-sensitive and dermatitis is the result in the scratched areas.

The result is often that the animal can not lie down for long or sleep comfortably due to the constant bites by the fleas. Therefore, the animal looks as if has some serious skin disease. If the the animal is not properly attended to for these flea bites, there will often be secondary bacterial invasions in these sites and there may even be a rotten smell coming from your dog's affected skin.

You have to observe your pet closely in order prevent a serious infestation of fleas. However, it is essential to avoid such a serious outbreak as they are extremely distressing to your dog. Similarly, the skin of the animal has to be inspected regularly for the presence of ticks and lice. In order to do this properly, you need to inspect the dog's skin by separating the dog's hairs. The easiest way to do this is by slowly back-combing or ruffling the animal's hair.

Often, if your animal is anaemic, and he is not infested with fleas, you need to check for hookworm. Symptoms of hookworm are anaemia, loose stools and a pot belly. The dog's owner may recognize these symptoms themselves, however, to be honest, the dog needs to undergo a routine health examination at the vet's involving faecal and hematological examinations.

There are many commercial products available on the market, some of which are effective for dealing with all these conditions by a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly efficacious and are available in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be put directly on the dog's skin. These drugs can induce the prevention of the above conditions too.

So, the best policy to adopt is to keep a keen watch on your dog. This can very easily be done at bath time and when you are grooming him. You can use an anti-flea and anti-tick shampoo, which will keep these pests at bay, if used regularly. Couple this with regular grooming with a lice comb and the use of a flea collar should keep your pet flea, lice, and tick free.
