Chickens are a one-of-a-kind pet to raise in the backyard. Unlike many of the popular pets such as fish, cats, and dogs they produce food. This makes owning chickens pay in the long run as a source of poultry meat and eggs. On top of that the eggs and meat produced will be a higher grade over store bought food and can be organic, cage-free, or anything else you wish for just a fraction of the cost.
Organic Eggs - If you have ever bought organic and/or cage-free eggs you know they are expensive. These eggs can easily sell for 3 times as much as regular industrial farm eggs. Producing organic eggs and poultry is quite easy and cost effective. All you have to do is feed your chickens organic feed and let them graze on chemical-free grass.
If you are not too concerned about organic foods than let me just add one quick thought. Chickens who are fed an organic diet, allowed to roam freely, and graze on grass have been shown to lay eggs with higher levels of Vitamin E and Omega-3 while reducing the amount of cholesterol content. Chickens, as with most animals, evolved on a balance diet of variety not uniform grain.
The Personalities of Chickens - If you enjoy the company of pets and other animals you will have certainly noticed that their personalities can vary as much as humans. Chickens are just as unique. Each of your chickens will have a personality all to themselves. You will be tempted to spend hours petting and spoiling them. Not to mention showing them off to your friends and neighbors. Chickens are also pleasing to look at. Each chicken will have a plumage of varying colors and patterns.
Eco-Friendly Helpers - A nice benefit of raising chickens is that they can help create an environmentally friendly backyard. Chickens love to roam around and graze on your lawn all the while eating garden pests. This helps decreases lawn care and prevents the need for using chemical pesticides. Chickens will also turn everything they eat into a high-quality organic fertilizer and even distribute it around the yard. This eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers. All you need to provide the food, water, and some free afternoons to enjoy watching them.
Many people do not realize that chickens can eat almost anything people can eat. This includes left over foods. You should take caution in feeding them strong flavors such as onions and garlic as this can affect the taste of their eggs. Also processed foods and other unhealthy foods are just as bed for chickens as they are for you and will degrade their eggs and meat.
Low-Maintenance - Chickens, compared to many of the other household animals that can be cared for as pets, are rather easy to care for. All they really require is to make sure their food is well stocked every day and the waterer remains full of fresh water. When they reach maturity and begin laying eggs, you will need to collect the eggs on a regular basis. Finally, their coop will need to be cleaned every other day or so and the coop bedding should be changed out every 3 to 4 weeks depending on the weather.

The myth that dogs are colourblind has been circulating for many years. The truth is that dogs dont just see in simple black, grey and white. In fact they have no problem seeing a list of other colours from yellow to violet. What they do have difficulty seeing is hues of red, green and orange.
Dogs eyes have something called photoreceptors in their retinas. These are divided into two categories rods and cones. Dog's eyes have a high number of rods. Comparatively, human eyes have a high level of cones. They are also missing the fovea seen in human eyes, preventing their vision from being as clear.
Despite this and their inability to see objects in great details, dogs have excellent night vision and a superior ability to track movement.
So, how was it discovered that dogs see in limited colours? Around 100 years ago tests were carried out (purporting to be scientific) to determine just what sorts of colours dogs were able to see. However, the actual tests that were carried out did not help to determine the range of colours that dogs could see, but rather they showed that colour vision does not play a part in a dogs daily life.
It was another 90 years before further tests were carried out to determine whether dogs are colourblind or not. In 1989 the three researchers Neitz, Geist and Jacobs carried out a number of tests on domestic dogs and were able to determine the following. 1 Dogs have two kinds of colour receptors in their eyes and so are dichromatic. 2 In dog's colour receptors, one peaks for the blue to violet range and the other for the yellow to green range. In 1993 and 1995 further research was carried out that again supported these findings.
Dogs in fact suffer from a form of green colour blindness similar to human red-green colour blindness. This particular illness is more commonly referred to as deuteranopia.
The term colourblind can often be misleading. It does not automatically suggest an incapability to see colours. It is a specific condition that some humans are also known to suffer from and though dogs are not capable of seeing a similar level of colours as humans, they can see shades that fall between blue, violet and yellow.

Dogs are very different from cats. A dog will need a lot more of your attention, but when treated right they will love you as much as you love them.
Tip 1 " When you first get your dog, it is a good idea to attach an identification tag to their collar. Many owners do this so if the dog goes missing or runs away the dog can be easily returned.
Tip 2 " Different countries have different laws regarding registering your dog. You will be required to register your dog in most countries. The general practice is to insert a microchip into the shoulder blade of the dog. By doing this, the dog is then registered so if lost will be returned.
Tip 3 " When walking your dog it is always best to keep them on the lead until you get to the park or open space. Some dogs are also classed as dangerous and may need a muzzle.
Tip 4 " Leaving your dog outside for periods of time is generally fine, but make sure that there is plenty of shelter for the dog to hide away from the cold and rain. Make sure you still spend time with the dog outside as these animals are pack animals and like being around others.
Tip 5 - Going to the vet should be a regular thing, animals, like humans need checkups from time to time. It may not be cheap going to the vets, but it is cheaper to have regular checkups than finding out later on that your dog has a serious illness that could have been prevented.
Tip 6 " It is always a good idea to have your dog spayed or neutered. It is been proven that by doing this your dog will lead and longer and healthier life. If you do tend to use your dog a stud, then it is best not to!
Tip 7 - It is important that you provide your dog with a well balanced nutritional diet and make sure that they can easily get to fresh water when they need. This is especially important if you intend to feed your dog only dried food. When it comes to which food to give your dog as there are so many different kinds available it may be advisable to discuss the issue with your vet first. Certainly many owners today prefer to feed dried dog food simply because it is must easier and also contains the right balance of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that dogs need. The other choice you have and if you have the time is actually to prepare fresh meals for your dog which you can then freeze and give to them each day.
Tip 8 - If you have never owned a dog before then it is worth your while enrolling them in some obedience training classes. This way you can learn the most humane and safe ways to control your dog and provides you with a chance to bond much more closely with your animal. Your vet should be able to recommend a class for you, plus there are plenty who advertise in local newspapers and dog magazines. Before joining such classes go along and check them out first and speak with other dog owners who attend them.
Tip 9 " Dogs love to be out in the open, so taking your dog for walks once or twice a day is vital. A trip to park or around the local block is all it needs to keep your dog fit and healthy.
Tip 10 " It is important to look after your dogs appearance, make sure you regularly groom the dog so that their coat is clean and shinny. You can also buy dog teeth brushes to make sure your dog has nice clean teeth.
Above we have given you 10 top ways to keep your dog in shape. If you follow the guidelines you and your dog will soon be on your way to a great partnership.

In movies and in cartoons animals are portrayed as the cute and cuddly creatures that man would want to have as their pets. Teddy bears who can sing melodious tunes, dogs who can dance and talk, birds who can serenade princesses are the stuffs that fairytales and movies are made off. Watching these animals do their tricks, we would likely think to have them as pets.
However, this fantasy is far from reality. In the real world teddy bears do not sing they growl when provoked, dogs cannot dance and talk they bark when they see someone who invades their territory, and birds who are predators threaten to share our food when we are out on camping trips. Not all animals are bad per se. They too have a role to play to maintain the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Some of them though show their animal instincts for survival especially if we threaten them.
There have been reports that people who are on camping trips were attacked by bears. Some of them were lucky enough to have brought animal repellents to ward off attacks. Those who were not ready enough suffered; some sustained major and minor injuries while others had to face the worst. Snakes, mosquitoes, dogs, insects, and other wild animals are just some of the animals that are warded off by repellents that are out in the market today.
Animal repellents can prevent ferocious animals from getting near us. Some of these repellents contain scents and odors that animals stay away from. The use of these repellents has been recommended to campers, backpackers, and to home owners.
Contrary to popular belief, animal repellents does not directly kill the animal it just wards them off or distract their attention for us to easily escape when we are attacked. Due to this, these repellents have the seal of approval from nature lovers and pet lovers alike.
About the Author:
