The Schutzhund testing, training and titling program is conducted around the world to evaluate German Shepherds for breed standards. The program has developed over the decades since early in the 20th century. It involves many equipment items. Most of the required items however are fairly standard and will be familiar to dog handlers.

The sport is divided into tracking, obedience and protection phases. Tracking trains the dog to use its scenting abilities, mental discipline and physical endurance. Obedience trains the dog to conform to specific commands. Protection requires the dog to hold a mock human decoy and then release it on command. Perhaps the first equipment to procure is a fur saver collar. This simple chain collar is designed so that links are dropped through an end ring to produce a loop sized to allow the head of the dog to pass through. A leash is attached to the end ring. The design minimizes the collar choking the dog.

Soft dog toys or tugs are used to prepare a pup for the sleeve. They teach a puppy that biting some items is permissible and biting others is not. Good tugs are around one inch in diameter and six to ten inches long. They can be made of various materials such as stuffed leather, fire hose or rope. The tug should not be too stiff as pups enjoy being able to squeeze and sinking their teeth into the tug. Larger tugs are used to begin protection training. A line is typically attached to one end of the rag.

Dumbbells are used for retrieval training. Schutzhund has specific dumbbell requirements, based on weight, for each level of the program. SchH1 requires 650 grams, SchH2 1000 grams and SchH3 2000 grams. In all cases, the SchH1 dumbbell is used for jumping.

Explaining Natural Drives of Dogs-Prey Drive vs Defense Drive begins with the three areas needed in order to train a protection dog. Prey drive, defensive drive and fight drive. Avoidance can also be considered on of these drives, but it's one that is not taught, or welcomed in Schutzhund training.

Prey drive is something that is inborn in all carnivorous animals. When something moves, they have an overwhelming urge to chase it, catch it, and eat it. This something that dogs do naturally. This drive is used in Schutzhund training to teach the dogs to view the sacks, tubes and sleeves as their prey. When the dog sees these things it knows things are about to get exciting. When training, this it is used as a place for the dogs to find comfort. Dogs find a great deal of joy in playing rough with their owners, and this is used to the trainers advantage.

Dogs are not born with defensive drive. Some owners claim their dogs would be capable of nothing more than licking an intruder to death. This is a clear sign that their dog was not born with a very strong defensive drive. It can't be taught. It's something they have to be born with, in order to be able to work with it in training. Dogs are not very happy when they're in this drive, and should be taught with great care. If not, it could lead to avoidance. This is something that is not wanted in training.

When correctly taught, these drives are eventually used to create fight drive. Schutzhund training begins as a fun way for dogs to play, but that play leads to the next step which is defensive, and the last area to learn belongs to fight drive. This is the part where the dogs are not playing or being fearful. The two drives come together and form what is known as fight drive. In this zone dogs are able to use the comfort they feel in prey drive and the confidence they acquired during defensive, to attack with a purpose and without fear. Fight drive is also something that dogs are not always born with. If a dog has a good prey drive and a healthy defensive drive, learning to use this new drive becomes much easier for them.

Not every dog is capable of mastering the protection phase in Schutzhund training. There are certain characteristics these dogs must possess in order to be trained successfully. Good strong breeding is very important, and a willingness to go above and beyond their natural instincts.

Often, plain boredom in your German Shepherd can be confused for separation anxiety. If your dog is happy to be apart from you while you're at home, he sleeps apart from you, you can go from room to room without him hot on your heels, etc., it is most likely not anxiety but boredom that prompts the destruction while you're away.
