All you need is a little bit of planning so that your garden would be flocked with hummingbirds and butterflies. Gardeners would see this as good news because these creatures are fun to watch and are also essential pollinators.

What you need to do is find out what butterflies and hummingbirds look for and which are flowers with nectar. Choose varieties that have a long bloom time as well as prolific bloomers when you select nectar-rich plants. If you want to prevent excessive woody growth and encourage the growth of new flowers, you need to prune your plants.

Ants are cold-blooded creatures which means that they cannot keep themselves warm. If their environment is cold, they go into a very lazy way of life and practically hibernate, whereas when it is warm they run about the garden foraging for food to take home to the nest. The climate of the country that they live in along with its seasons determines which species of ants can live there and how they will behave and when.

Therefore, in the temperate countries of the north. you rarely see ants in the winter, whereas in the tropics they are lively all year round. This is just perfect for the ants that live in those locations.

When you take ants out of their natural surroundings, bring them indoors and make them live in a box, usually known as an ant farm, you have to regulate the ants' temperature and their food. If you have a local kind of ant, the temperature is not a problem. It is much the same as with tropical fish.

Whenever, you build an artificial home for an animal, you have to produce an environment that it can live in, you cannot require that creature to adapt to what you can provide although some can change a little. We would all love to have spotlessly clean homes 24/7, but this just isn't reality for some of us. There are a few easy steps you can take to keep your home clean and tidy.

One of the untidiest things that we own are our clothes. Seriously, think about it. We are all guilty of throwing down a coat, or a cardigan or a jumper and leaving it there. If you have so many clothes that you have run out of storage, have a sort out and get rid of the ones you don't wear.

The next thing you need to do is sort out those loose items that have been hanging around without a home. Clocks, picture frames, books, you know the kind of things I mean.

If you are thinking about getting an ant farm, there are a few things that you need to learn about keeping ants before you set up or at least colonize your farm. In fact, even before you buy your ant farm, you should look around for which varieties of ants you can get hold of and then read up on what sort of colonies those ants build.

Do they build nests above and below ground or only below ground? Most regular ant farms are not designed to handle anthills, although some, shaped like a flat-bottomed egg are built to deal with a small anthill.

Once you know what types of ants you can have, you can decide on the variety and buy the correct shaped ant farm. Most beginners begin with harvester ants, which will live quite happily in a standard ant farm. Your colony may grow to several thousand members, so the next thing to think about is fodder for them.

Harvester ants will eat a lot of different kinds of food, but it is easier and more hygienic if you feed them sugary, crunchy vegetables and fruit. For example, bits of carrot, celery and apple are very good. They are easily cut up and carried by the ants, they are nutritious and they will not rot down or start to smell bad quickly.

You will have to judge for yourself how much food to put down, but it is far better to put out fresh food every day, than leave a big lump of something lying in the farm for days on end. If you notice that food is being left, cut down a bit.

On the other hand, if the colony is growing in number and the food is vanishing put a little more down. Working the amount of food out is part of your job. Mold is a health hazard to ants so be on the look out for it on the food at all times.

Ants will get a lot of the moisture that they need from the food that you provide them, but they do require water as well. Not much to be sure, but you ought to drip two or three drops - literally only two or three drops of water - onto the ground every day. Whatever you do do not tip so much water that a puddle forms, even a very small one.

If you want to give your ants a real delicacy, put a few granules of sugar into half a teaspoon of water and tip that onto the soil. They will love it and it will also give them a boost of energy, just as if you were to eat a chocolate bar.

Having an ant farm should be instructive and enjoyable. Watching the ants toil together to build a nest and rear their young will teach adults and children alike a lot about how insects live. It will also help dispel some of the illogical fear that many people have for insects in general, including ants.
