Choosing the best bird feeder is not as simple to do as you may think. Certain factors must be considered by the bird feeding enthusiast in order to make an informed choice. The types of birds you wish to attract (small, medium, songbird, ground feeder or perch feeder ), ease of cleaning and filling the seed container, quality, capacity, types of material the feeder is made of (metal or plastic), durability, and most importantly of all the ability to thwart squirrels and larger unwanted birds.
The spot you select to place your bird feeder also determines the kinds of birds that you will see dining on the feast provided. Perch feeders for example prefer to feed from platforms or from feeders hanging from a tree limb or the eave of a porch and ground feeders like to feed from sources closer to the ground.
Squirrels are considered such an enemy to the bird feeding enthusiast that a whole technology has been developed with thwarting them in mind. Weight sensitive perches that close the feeding ports when a certain threshold is reached, collapsing spring loaded perches that drop or fling the offending pest away from their prize, and trays that tip under a certain weight are only a few weapons against the enemy.
The feeder that frequently offers the most effective squirrel proof technology is the tube feeder. Hobbyists keep ease of cleaning in mind when choosing this type of feeder. Special brushes are also available for to aid in cleaning of the tube feeder.
A mesh bag, synthetic or cotton, does not offer much in the way of temptation for a squirrel. He, or she, is not interested in the type of seed, thistle, the bag is used to offer to the smaller varieties of birds.
The traditional method of offering seed to the feathered ones is known as a hopper. Unfortunately, few have the defensive capabilities necessary to defend its contents against the acrobat that is the squirrel.
Another device that has had its problems in the past is the platform feeder. Now though squirrel, and larger bird, thwarting measures have been added, which include chicken wire meshes placed over the seed containers.
The best bird feeders are the ones that are specifically designed for the type of bird you wish to attract to your backyard. Quality and durability are also factors as enthusiasts wish to feed their feathered friends a for a long time to come. Most important of all use the technology available to thwart bird feeding enemy number one, the wily squirrel.

Housetraining is usually the first thing that a new puppy owner thinks about. Few puppies have received any training on housetraining before they go to their new homes. There are two simple methods that you can use to housetrain your puppy and you can use either one of them or you can use both of them at the same time.
The first way to train your puppy is to be very attentive and watch his behavior. Puppies will crouch to urinate and defecate. You must watch your puppy very attentively and as soon as he starts to change his stance then scoop him up and take him to his selected spot. If you happen to fail to notice the sign and he has an mishap, you should never reprimand him as he is still just learning and he does not know what is expected of him yet. Scolding him will just terrify him unreasonably.
If you happen to miss the signs fully and you come across an disaster soon after, do not discipline him. Dogs can only connect to what is happening at this moment and he will not know why he is in trouble if you reprimand him after the fact. This will just serve to confound your puppy and that will cause you more problems in the future.
The second approach to housetrain your puppy is to use a newspaper method. Start by covering the whole floor of the space where your puppy runs around. He will learn that the paper is an okay place to do his business. In stages reduce the newspapers in the room, making it smaller and smaller until there is only a small spot left. Then you can take that small piece of newspaper outside to his designated spot and he will start going there.
Either of these methods can work well. You may want to use both methods at the same time by using attention during the day and the newspapers at night. When you are active or preoccupied by other things, the paper system may work better.
Occasionally a puppy will go through a stage where he seems to "unlearn" all that you thought he already knew. This is a regular incident even though it can be very maddening. Do not penalize him for it.
You can use his own intrinsic dog behavior to get him back on track. A dog will not foul in his own space. Use a crate and make it comfy for him. Let him nap in his crate and when you let him out, straight away take him to his chosen spot. He will have to relieve himself straight away and he will quickly learn that this is the only suitable spot to do his business.
Housetraining does not need to be frightening or intimidating. Either or both of these two methods along with some persistence can have your new puppy housetrained before you know it.

Puppies and dogs are inborn pack animals and most of their conduct reflects that fact. The most notable thing to do when you get a new puppy is to set up your control. You are the "pack leader" and you must always make sure that your puppy knows that.
Puppies will expend a significant amount of time trying to figure out where they fit into the pecking order. They usually do this by trying to create their own authority. Some breeds are more assertive than others, for case, the terrier breeds. Some of the other breeds tend to be more dutiful naturally.
Immediately when your puppy comes home he needs to have his status in the chain of command established. He needs to be discerning that you and all of the individual family members in your home are domineering over him. This is not a matter of punishment but it is something that must occur if he is to become a contented and obedient member of your household.
In order to institute the dominance you must stick to a few easy rules. If not your puppy will be getting mixed signals and it will be more demanding for you to train him and he will be bewildered as to what you really want.
The leader must always eat first. Do not let your puppy eat before you eat. If you are planning on eating about the same time as you plan to feed your puppy, you need to make your puppy wait until you are done. Or you can have your puppy eat at a complete separate time than you eat. In the beginning you may want to call your puppy to you to get his food and make him wait before you give it to him. You can teach him to sit and then give him his food.
Grooming your puppy can send potent signals about who is in charge. At the beginning your puppy may whimper and wail when you touch him for basic grooming however you must take no notice of him and be firm on finishing. Every time follow through on what you start because puppies understand very rapidly if you really mean something or not.
When puppies are little they use their mouths to nip and bite at things. You must stop this behavior at once by giving him a sharp "No" and a tap if required. The leader of the pack never allows nipping and you are the leader of the pack.
It is critical with a new puppy to show him that you are dominant so try to avoid games like "tug'o'war" where he can get forceful and show too much control. Make sure that you reward his good behavior with praise and treats but just pay no heed to his bad behavior as you start obedience training. Keep these easy rules in mind and you can immediately train your puppy to be a good and obedient dog.

You can find "boot-camp" type training plans where your dog stays at a special kennel for a few weeks throughout the most rigorous training. At the end, the owner comes in and participates in order to make sure that they can handle the dog as easily as the trainer.
Training your dog to ignore distractions may be challenging as dogs are social animals and they generally love both people and other animals. However, it is vital that you are able to command your dog's attention in spite of of what is going on around you so it is very essential to work on this. You can try to get his attention with a favorite toy or a treat as a enticement to get the attention back to you. If your dog is clicker trained, he should bring his awareness back to you with a click.
Spaying or neutering your dog is not only a great way to avoid litters of puppies, but it is positive for your puppy's health. Also, it will eliminate many aggression problems and you will have fewer behavior problems.
You are able to begin training your dog right now. Take a look at the countless dog-training programs and find the one that you feel the most comfortable with, then just sign up, download it to your computer, and begin training your dog right away.
At the moment is a excellent time to be an aspiring dog trainer because of all of the wonderful online resources offered on the Internet. There is content offered on every aspect of dog training and there is also some great data about how to best go about the process of actually training your dog yourself. The majority of these online dog-training courses can be downloaded without difficulty to your own computer.
When you first begin training you can use visual cues, treats and rewards and other tools, but in time your dog should be able to respond as you need with just the sound of your voice. Be consistent with all of your voice commands so that your dog is never mystified about what you want.
There are plenty of probable rewards and advantages to owning a dog, however, without suitable training a dog can actually boost your stress level rather than reduce it. When your dog jumps all over an important caller to your house, or he barks and barks for no reason, or he chews up your favorite shoes, it can be very stressful. That is one reason why it is so vital to begin training your new puppy without delay and to at all times be consistent.

Your dog wants to be trained. He will be much happier and greatly more at ease the better trained that he is. You will as well enjoy him more. Dogs are pack animals and they obtain pleasure from following the leader of the pack. You just need to make sure that the boss or the "alpha dog" is you.
Dogs that are not trained for obedience are commonly much more edgy and rambunctious because they do not know precisely what it expected of them. A dog is tends to be much happier and more contented when he knows accurately what they need to do at all times. A subservient dog is not just happier but he is safer, too.
You can take advantage of various ways to train your dog. There are loads of books and videos out there and you can also find some impressive online courses. Just about every city also has proficient dog trainers and dog obedience programs that you can go to also.
All dogs need to embark on their training as soon as they come home. Even older dogs need to start training, as the old myth; "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is not accurate. Every dog will act in response to constructive reinforcement and every dog will want to please the boss or the "alpha dog".
The most victory in dog training comes when you include education in playtime and just have fun. You are still teaching vital lessons but you both are enjoying the time you spend and you are not placing stress on your dog by forcing things. All dogs are different and your dog may learn some things very quickly while other things take more time. Just get pleasure from the process and both of you will profit.
Affirmative reinforcement for sought after actions from your dog is critical. Employ both praise or treats but make positive that you acknowledge your dog when he does something right. Timing is also imperative. You must give the praise immediately after the performance so that he will link the good feelings with the good actions. The same holds true for any type of reprimand also.
A dog cannot reason and he can only associate positive or negative reinforcement with what is happening at the moment. If you reprimand your dog now for something that he did an hour ago, it is absolutely futile and it will only serve to scare him pointlessly because he won't realize your reasoning.
The very most imperative thing that you need to be attentive of when you are training a dog is that you and all of the human being members of your family need to outrank him in the pack order. You must be the chief or the "alpha dog". You can promptly bolster this in his mind if you rub his belly as soon as he turns over. He will have to surrender to you and he will then consider you as the leader. All of your teaching will be easier if you are established in his mind as the leader.

It is always exciting to get a new puppy but you will want to be prepared to guide your puppy and teach him to be a cherished part of your family. Before you bring your new puppy to your place there are a few items that you will need to consider. It is easier to have the stuff that you will need on hand rather than to try to get them later on.
There is an large quantity of things that you can get for your new puppy. Some of these things are practical and helpful to have and others are not really required.
The most important item that you need to have is a crate. All of your training will go better if you use a crate. Also dogs like to have their own space that is pleasant and comfortable for them. Make sure that you get the appropriate size, not too huge and not too little. You may want two if you take your dog in the auto very often.
A collar and a leash are also crucial. Get one everyday collar that fits well and save any special training collars for later. One six-foot, perhaps retractable leash that is comfortable for your hand is also necessary.
Try to find out what your puppy is used to eating and get enough of that for a couple of weeks. All dietary changes should be made little by little. Get a food and water dish also. Stainless steel is typically the best.
For training purposes, you will need some type of aversive, or something that you can use do dissuade unmanageable behavior. An aversive is something that your dog does not like and will work to stay away from but something that will not hurt him. A clicker that makes a noise or a squirt bottle will act as an aversive. You will also need some soft treats that you can use as a reward in training.
Young puppies need to chew until they get a tad bigger so you will want to have some chew toys on hand. Start out with just a few until you know what your puppy likes. Same with other toys do not load up on toys until you know your puppy's personality.
The first few days after you bring your puppy home will be easier if you have the things that you need on hand. You will want to start training right away so it will be easier if you are geared up.

Spaying or neutering your dog is not only a wise way to avoid litters of puppies, but it is positive for your puppy's health. Also, it will eradicate many aggression complications and you will have less behavior difficulties.
To be able to keep your dog's attention you can do things that he enjoys but you must also reward him for small successes. Do not proffer a food reward every time, however, because intermittent reinforcement is actually much more effective than constant reinforcement because he never knows when he will get the treat so he will keep doing the behavior on the hope that he will get the food reward. Also too many food treats can be bad for your dog's health and weight. However, love and attention should be consistently given.
A treat does not essentially have to be food. It can be a walk in the park, playing in the yard, riding in the car or even just a hug and pat on the head. Love and affection should not be withdrawn, as your dog will do just about anything for that alone. This is a great way to sustain your dog's motivation to satisfy you.
Be watchful of distractions during your training sessions. Your dog must learn to pay no heed to the distractions and obey your commands. Give love and attention and rewards when his attention is only on you. As your training progresses you should go to more and more locations where there are probable distractions so that he learns to put his attention where you want it to be.
You can get started training your dog right now. Take a look at the many dog-training programs and find the one that you feel the most at ease with, then just sign up, download it to your computer, and start training your dog right away.
Dog training will take time, patience and energy. But there is no way to get out of doing it and still have a well-mannered and well-adjusted dog. If you can't do it yourself you should probably go ahead and employ a expert, but do be aware that that option will end up costing you quite a bit more money.

It is a immense choice to make when you come to a decision to get a new puppy. Most of the dog breeds live between 10 and 15 years so your new pet will be with you for quite awhile. That is why the decision should not be taken frivolously.
Before looking at puppies you should try to spend some time with an adult dog of the chosen breed. Talk to breeders, local dog obedience trainers and other owners.
Your puppy will develop up to be an grown-up dog so as you decide on a breed make sure that you spend some time with some grown dogs from that breed. Talk to people who have possession of that breed or are familiar with the breed such as breeders at dog shows and local dog obedience trainers. If doable spend some time with some grown-up dogs of the sort.
Unique breeds have diverse distinctiveness that you will need to take into consideration. Some dog's shed and some dogs make a big noise called "baying". Make sure that the breed you choose has qualities that you can live with. If you cannot stand dog hair on your furniture or you or a family member is allergic you will want to think about a dog that will not shed. If your family is laid back and easy going you may not want to get a energetic and rambunctious little terrier.
Those who work with animal's day in and day out like veterinarians and the people who work in their office can usually give you quite a bit of helpful information on the breed that you are considering. If there are latent health tribulations that tend to show up in the breed it is nice to know that before you see the puppies.
You will also need to do some investigation into breed particular ailments. Certain breeds are prone to different genetic problems such as cleft palate, hip dysplasia or in the case of the lovable little Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, heart mitral valve disease.
If you want some really invaluable and fair-minded information talk with one or more dog obedience instructors. They usually have a abundance of great information that they can give you on the diverse breeds and what to look for when choosing a puppy.
For a lot of years to come your new puppy will with any luck be a much-loved member of your family. You need to amass some sound information and use that to choose your puppy and not just the "puppy love" that we all tend to go through around sweet little puppies. Every puppy will grow out of that really cute state and the adult dog is the one who will be your pet for years to come.

It is always an exhilarating stretch when a new dog joins your family. Whether you get a new puppy or an older dog this is the time when you want to make sure that you are doing whatever you can to socialize your new family member. It is better for everyone if you do what you can to socialize your new dog because he is likely to come upon several new and uncommon situations during his life and he needs to realize early on how to respond in healthy and suitable way.
New puppies can start off getting socialized as early as 2 to 3 weeks after birth. Most adopted puppies join their new family at about 7 to 8 weeks of age. The socialization of a puppy should commence as near the beginning as possible. However puppies tend to be more afraid and tentative until the time that they are 14 weeks old so during the initial days make sure that you are gentle with them.
Socialization is a ability that should be trained throughout a dog's life. Different situations and circumstances can affect a dog and he can change from warm and outgoing to nervous, afraid or even threatening. That is why it is essential to train in socialization skills throughout your dog's life. Permit him to experience a range of situations, different people and other animals.
Let your dog become familiar with other dogs and other animals. You can take him to a park or a doggie daycare or even just go to see friends who have pets. Be sure that your dog has had all of his shots first but it is critical for his socialization to meet up with others.
People who appear to your dwelling frequently should all be familiar to your dog. That would include the mailperson. Introduce them and let your dog get familiar. If it is feasible make sure that you take your dog around many diverse people, as it will increase his social skills immensely.
Dogs are natural pack animals and they will reconstruct the pack in their new home. This means that it is critical that humans are always seen as the prevailing member of the pack. When a human speaks the dog should mind, every time, no matter what. The dog is the follower and the humans are the leaders.
Socialization should carry on throughout the life of your dog. Your dog needs to frequently come across new situations and new people and animals. He will be less prone to develop troubles like biting and fighting if he is well socialized.
Your dog training will be more successful and you and other people will like your pet more if he is correctly socialized and well-behaved in the majority of situations.

How crucial is a dog's own disposition and personality when it comes to dog training? Well, dogs are similar to people in that they may react differently to different training techniques based upon their personalities. Also, some dogs will be more difficult and some dogs will be easy going and that is just their own personality. But there are a few basic dog-training concepts that will remain the same regardless of the dog or the training technique.
The most crucial idea when it comes to training a dog is timing. Dogs are not human and they do not comprehend human ideas. All corrections and reinforcements of behavior must be completed instantly. When your dog poops on the floor you need to catch him in the act if you want to fix that behavior. If you don't he will not know why you are correcting him and your correction will go unheeded.
You must be consistent when you are training a dog. Dogs do not comprehend the concept of "sometimes". If you do not want your dog to jump on you when you are wearing your nice business suit then you must never let him jump on you when you are wearing your jeans. If you do not want your dog to chew on your beautiful new and expensive pumps you cannot allow him to chew on your old ratty tennis shoe. With a dog you must be consistent with everything, every time.
Confirm that you offer both praise and correction. Most dogs will learn much quicker and easier when they have praise so make sure that you let him know when he does something right. Correction is also necessary so balance the two.
You ought to be decisive and firm with your dog. When you give him a command he must obey. If he does not follow through then show him but when you speak he must obey every time. A dog does not understand the concept of "sometimes".
Make training fun. You can always play games and have some fun while you are teaching and he is learning. Both of you will appreciate and enjoy it and the bond between you will deepen.
It is critical to be reasonable with your dog. When he clearly comprehends what you are wanting from him he is more likely to comply. If he does not seem to understand you can take more time with him and split your training up into smaller times. Work with him and show him the behavior that you want. Use praise and corrections as required.
As the dogs owner, you have the responsibility of making sure your dog is well trained and well behaved. Take into consideration his own temperament and work with him as necessary.

The American Kennel Club has been around for a lot of years. The American Kennel Club has been the advocate for dog owners and dogs in this country for many years.
There are over 160 breeds of acknowledged purebred dogs that the AKC recognizes. There are the popular breeds that are well-known to nearly everyone like the Labrador Retriever or the Cocker Spaniel and there are some very little known breeds that are much more uncommon like the Borzoi or the Petit Basset Griffon Venden.
The accepted breeds are further broken down into groups, which connote a grouping that fits the distinctiveness of the breed. These groups often point out the intent of the dog and what it was bred for in the past, whether it was for hunting, herding or even just for enjoyment.
The breeds in the sporting group include pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. These breeds necessitate regular and revitalizing exercise. They are good at hunting and other field activities and they have many natural instincts for water and woods.
Hounds were bred for hunting in the past. They tend to have enormous resilience and an sharp sense of smell to hunt down their prey. This group would take in Beagles, Basset Hounds and Bloodhounds.
The working group of dogs was originally bred to labor at pulling sleds or performing water rescues. The Terrier Group includes dogs that were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin. Terriers tend to have very spunky and feisty personalities.
The one group that was bred generally as a pet and just for delight is the toy group. Just as their name suggests they tend to be tiny but full of life. Every group has small dogs however so a small dog is not necessarily part of the toy group. Some popular breeds from the toy group are the spunky Chihuahua and the cute and placid Cavalier King Charles spaniel. The non-sporting group is the next group and it includes such breeds as the Dalmatian and the Chow-Chow. The ever-popular Poodle is also part of the non-sporting group.
The herding group is the newest classification that just came about in 1983. These breeds were once part of the working group. These dogs were bred to herd other animals such as cattle or sheep. These include the Corgi and the Shetland Sheepdog. Each group of breeds has their own individual distinctiveness and you need to check them out to see which one appeals to you.

One of the great pleasures of owning a dog is being able to go for a walk. A dog that is well leash trained makes a walk relaxing and pleasurable but if your dog is not leash trained that same walk becomes an exercise in frustration and it can even be dangerous.
Begin training your puppy for leash training when he is very young. The younger he is the more success you will have. The first thing to do is get him used to wearing a collar. He will likely fight it at first so make sure that you make him wear it even if he starts whining. Be sure to remove the collar when you crate him though so you can avoid any mishaps.
After your puppy has grown used to the collar you can start getting him used to the leash. Attach it to the collar and just allow him to drag it around the house. Make sure that you are there to supervise him as he could cause some chaos if the leash gets tangled with anything. Pretty soon you can take the leash and practice walking around in the house with him. It may seem odd to walk your puppy around in the house but you will have success earlier if you start out in a place where he is comfortable and as far as that goes there is no place like home.
When he gets comfortable with the leash in the house you can take him out in your yard. He should still be comfortable but he will have a few more distractions. When you are walking him make sure that you discourage any bad behavior and encourage the better behaviors.
If you puppy is pulling at the leash, just stop walking. Stand still. He may still pull for awhile but if you stop every time he pulls he will soon learn not to do that. Make sure that you are speaking with him and giving him commands, this is a good time for communication.
Another technique you can use when your dog is pulling is to turn and immediately walk the other direction. He will be confused but if you do it every time he will soon learn that pulling is something that you will not put up with. Repeat these techniques until he completely stops pulling on the leash.
Sometimes your puppy will stop himself. If he stops and won't go along on the walk you can use treats as encouragement. Don't call him to you but rather drop the treat by your feet and make him come to it. It may take a few times but soon he will be walking with you instead of sitting behind.
It doesn't take very long to properly leash train a puppy and it is really nice when they walk obediently beside you with a slack leash. This is the behavior you want to reinforce so make sure that he gets ample praise and attention when he starts doing this well. Stop all bad behavior early on and you will soon be enjoying walks with your dog for a long time to come.

Most dogs just love to dig around in soft dirt. You want to have a nice yard and a nice garden and your dog comes along and ruins it all. It is a big mess that you can hardly keep up with. You want a nice yard but your dog wants to have fun digging around. What is the best way to handle this problem?
Dogs are actually diggers by nature. Some breeds are even bred to be diggers as they hunt and dig out specific prey. It may be more challenging if your dog is a natural digger but you can still contain his digging behavior with a few training methods.
It is important for your dog to engage his curiosity, learn about and explore his world. But most people want a nice yard too. You must control his digging or even halt it entirely if you want to keep your yard nice.
Dogs sometimes dig because they are bored. They crave entertainment. He may be suffering from separation anxiety because you are away. Maybe he isattempting to dig out an escape route so he can get out of the yard. He may even be digging for something as simple as controlling his own temperature. He may be too hot and trying to cool down or he may be too cold and trying to warm-up.
You can get your dog to reduce or even halt his digging patterns. First make sure that he has enough time with you and gets plenty of exercise and playtime. You can also make sure that he has toys that he enjoys. Often dogs will try to bury bones so if you give your dog bones to chew on make sure you replace them with chew toys or rawhide bones.
Clicker training often works well to stop digging. Watch and see when your dog starts to dig then click the clicker to distract him, engage him with a command that means "no digging" and give him a treat. With some persistence and consistency, clicker training can be very effective.
You can also try to stop your dog from digging by filling up his hole with undesirable items. Dogs like to dig in clean dirt so if you fill up his hole with rocks or twigs and even his own poop he won't want to dig more. You could also try to bury a balloon that will pop when he begins digging. The balloon will scare him but it won't hurt him and it will probably stop him from digging more.
You should try to designate a spot in your yard specifically for his digging. This will take the most time and patience but it may be the best solution if your dog is just a natural digger. There have long been mixed breed dogs that contrast quite a bit in looks, size and disposition. They are often referred to as "mutts" and they tend to have strong health and they make terrific pets. You can customarily locate a wonderful mutt to adopt from the local shelter.
A mutt has an unspecified inheritance. The parents are not ordinarily purebreds and the family is basically unknown. There are no records of their genetic line and their inheritance is dubious.
On the other hand a purebred has two parents of the identical breed. Many times there are lengthy and well kept records on the topic of the ancestry of these dogs. Breeders are sensible in their breeding actions to make sure that they bring into being the strongest qualities in their dogs.
Some people may favor to have a mixed breed or a mutt for a pet as they more often than not have great health and they make great pets while others may desire to have a purebred dog. Still, there is one more option that can be considered and that is the hybrid dog or the "designer dogs".
A hybrid dog is the offspring of two purebred parents from two distinctive breeds. They are unlike a mutt because their genetic roots is known. Each of the parents of the designer puppy have a genetic line that can be traced back a few generations.
These days' hybrid dogs are becoming quite popular. They can be found in dog shows, pet stores and even the movies. The hybrids usually have the best personality of each breed and they blend the best attributes from both breeds.
These designer dogs usually have cool names that are a combination of the two breed names such as puggle, for a pug and beagle mix, poogle for a poodle and pug mix, cockapoo for a cocker poodle mix, goldendoodle, which is a golden retriever and poodle mix and the list goes on and on.
Hybrids are wonderful pets and if you are having a difficult time deciding on a breed a hybrid can get you the best of two breeds. They generally have fantastic health and they are clever and fun dogs to own.

Most every has seen excessive aggression in dogs. It can strike fear into small children and adults alike. Some breeds are more prone to aggression than others but there are usually underlying causes of excessive aggression in dogs and your training efforts will be more effective if you take these underlying reasons into consideration. A well-behaved dog that you can trust in most situations is something that most pet owners prefer.
If you dog wishes to establish his dominance he may act aggressively. Dogs are naturally pack animals and there is always a hierarchy in the pack. When you are training your dog you need to establish yourself as the alpha dog. If your dog thinks he is the leader you will constantly have difficulties. Your dog may still act aggressively towards other dogs or animals if dominance issues are the reason why he is being aggressive.
Territorial aggression is also a frequent form of aggressive behavior. Your dog will tirelessly protect the things he perceives to be "his" including you, your home and your family. This can be a good thing but it needs to be contained or it can cause problems with neighbors and visitors. A dog that is excessively aggressive because of territorial issues is difficult to own.
Sometimes a dog will be aggressive out of fear. Your dog lashes out because something has frightened him and he does not know what else to do. Something triggers it and your dog starts growling, pulls his ears back and tucks his tail between his legs. This type of aggression is often misunderstood and thought to be direct aggression but the dog is just acting out of fear rather than meanness.
Aggressive behavior can sometimes occur for no apparent reason. However this aggression is usually misdirected. Something happens that triggers anxiety within the dog but he is not able to react to the actual reason so he lashes out on something else. This may be a reason for some inexplicable dog fights between 2 or more animals. The dog is just not able to act on the real cause.
Sometimes aggression can be caused by a biological or medical reason. For example, we all understand that a mother dog may become aggressive in an attempt to protect her litter. Less understood though is that sometimes aggression can be brought on by a medical reason. That is why it is important to take your dog to the vet for a complete examination to rule out any medical issues.
Spaying your female dog and neutering your male dog will usually help calm excessive aggression. Your training efforts will also be easier and more effective. If you are not planning to breeding dogs, spaying and neutering is the responsible thing to do.
Your training efforts to curb aggression will be more efficient if you take into consideration the reasons why your dog is being aggressive. Understanding the reasons for your dog's aggressive tendencies can help you to tailor your training methods to his needs.

We've all seen excessive aggression in dogs. It can strike fear into small children and adults alike. A well-behaved dog that you can trust in most circumstances is something that most pet owners prefer.
Aggressive reactions can be caused because your dog wants to establish dominance. Dogs are pack animals and there is always a leader within the pack. Your dog may want to establish himself as the alpha dog. However, you need to be the alpha dog so let your dog know that you are the leader of this pack. He may still act aggressively towards other animals or other dog's as there is a hierarchy to the pack. This may be one reason why your dog acts aggressively.
Another common type of aggression in dogs is territorial aggression. Your dog will relentlessly protect everything that he considers to be "his" including yourself, your home and your family. While this can be a good thing if you are threatened at some point, it can cause many problems in regular circumstances. It is infrequently that a family is truly threatened and if your dog's territorial aggression is out of control it can cause problems with visitors and neighbors. Excessive territorial aggression is unacceptable behavior.
Fear can cause a dog to act out aggressively. Something happens that frightens him and he does the only thing he knows how to do which is to begin growling, pull his ears back, tuck his tail between his legs and act fierce. This is just a protective mechanism that is often misunderstood as being direct aggression but the truth is that something triggered the fear, which in turn triggered the aggressive behavior.
Aggressive behavior can sometimes happen for no obvious reason. However this aggression is usually misdirected. Something happens that instigages anxiety within the dog but he is unable to react to the actual reason so he takes it out on something else. This may be a reason for some inexplicable dog fights between 2 or more animals. The dog is just not able to act on the real cause.
There may also be medical or biological issues for aggression. A mother dog will often express aggression when she is nursing her litter of puppies. This type of aggression is understandable however sometimes a medical issue could be causing excessive aggression so it is always wise to have your vet give your dog a thorough examination.
Spaying your female dog and neutering your male dog will usually help calm excessive aggression. Your training efforts will also be easier and more effective. If you are not in the business of breeding dogs, spaying and neutering is the responsible thing to do.
If you consider the reasons why your dog may be acting aggressively you can tailor your training efforts and curb the aggression. You can work with your dog's own specific needs and be more successful.

Most all dogs bark sometimes. It is their chief mode of communication but when a dog barks excessively it is annoying for everyone. Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark at times.
There are generally a couple of reasons why a dog will bark excessively. One of the main reasons why a dog barks is because of boredom. Dogs are pack animals, they enjoy daily exercise, interacting with others and social stimulation. If they are spending most of their time being cooped up in the house or even outdoors in the same yard everyday they may need more stimulation. Try taking your dog for more walks around the block or institute some structured playtime every day. This may help to keep your dog from excessive barking if he barks out of boredom.
Dogs will bark when they are nervous or scared. Some dogs are never properly socialized and therefore the smallest thing can frighten them. While you are training your dog take him to many different places and take him around a variety of people. Reward him when he is quiet and well behaved. A food treat will do wonders to keep him contained in different places and different situations. Soon he will start associating being quiet and well behaved with the treat and this will work wonders towards his excessive barking under these conditions.
Dogs will bark to get your attention and this is one way to communicate. However, if you respond to barking every time you are just teaching your dog to bark more. Attempt to get him to communicate in different ways and reinforce that behavior with praise and treats. He can rub on your leg if he wants to go outside just as easily as he can bark at you!
Sometimes your dog will bark excessively because you have left home and you are not with him. This barking from separation anxiety is disturbing to the neighbors and others so it is wise to try to eliminate it. Start when he is a puppy and crate him when you leave so he learns to be content in his own space. Also never make a big deal out of leaving home but rather just sneak away quietly. He may never know that you are gone and if he does he will not be so loud about it.
Dogs bark to protect you and there are situations when we all would appreciate that. However, every single day when the mailman or mail person! delivers the mail is not one of those times! This is atime when socialization and training can really pay off. Go with your dog to meet the mailman, let them become acquainted and hopefully your dog will not bark at him everyday. Another way to get him to stop barking at inappropriate times is to distract him with a game or a treat. But when your dog barks to protect you remember that there may come a situation when you will appreciate that so limit your training to people you know.
You can train your dog not to bark excessively. A dog trainer can offer you some tips but usually more socialization and more playtimes do wonders to stop excessive barking. Your dog is barking for a reason though, so it is wise to figure out the reason why and adjust your training to that.
Dogs who only bark at appropriate times are much less annoying than dogs that bark excessively. Start training your dog away from excessive barking while he is still a pup and when he is all grown up you will know when he barks that there is a good reason.

Fashion appears to dictate everything nowadays days. From what you wear to what you name your dog, everything you do is decreed by the requirement to be fashionable. Cool dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because no sooner is something in fashion, than it is out again.
Who would want to choose a cute dog name that may not be fashionable tomorrow? People usually play it safe as a result, hence why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cool dog names are given below with our reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.
Phoenix: What could be cuter than a bird that goes up in flames and then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cute dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is located in mythology. It has a timeless quality which has surprisingly failed to boost its popularity.
Star: Star is one of the cool dog names because it has so many meanings that you can have a hard time finding out where to start. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that outperforms in a certain field. It is a high form of praise and thus is definitely a cool dog name.
Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cool dog names because of the Disney cartoon film, Lady and the Tramp, which was a massive hit. The film made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case, popularity comes second to coolness.
Elvis: The coolest of cool dog names. Elvis Presley was definitely cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is immeasurably cool to call your dog after such a tremendous star who has never gone out of fashion himself.
Shadow: There is a dark and ethereal quality about Shadow that makes it a cool dog name. It would be best used on a big breed of dog though, because it wouldn't have the same strong effect with a small breed.
Whatever cute dog names you use for your pooch, it is a certain method of giving your dog an identity of its own and your dog memorable to others.

Raising a dog is like raising a baby. Like our own children, they look up to us to give them food, shelter, and proper nourishment. As a responsible dog owner, it is our responsibility to give them the best care we can and to make sure they are given proper health care.
Dog urinary tract infections happen at the parts where urine forms and is excreted out of the body. A mild case of infection is not easy to detect. That is why in most cases, dogs are treated only when the infection is already on its advanced stages.
Dog urinary tract infection is a rising health problem in today?s society. Previous studies have revealed that approximately--% of the entire dog population in the whole world is bound to contract canine urinary tract infection.
How can your dog contract UTI? Dog urinary tract infection could arise when any of these types of bacteria get into your dog?s body and overcome its immune system: proteus mirabilis, escherichia coli, pseudomonas, coagulase positive straphylococcus, esterococcus, or klebsiella. These types of bacteria could get into your dog?s system through the food they eat and the water they drink everyday. Likewise, dogs can develop UTI through an instance called ?ascending UTI?, a condition which occurs when the bacteria had gained access into the dog?s internal system through its external urinary openings.
Using natural substances or herbal medicines to help cure urinary tract infection not only works well for humans but for dogs as well. Herbal medicines are as effective as the best antibiotics in the market. A number of herbs that have beneficial properties and effects for dogs and which are excellent natural remedies for urinary tract infections for canine patients are the following: 1. Staphysagris 2. Berberis vulgaris 3. Uva ursi 4. Cantharis 5. Goldenrod 6. Juniper berry
Although dogs are bound to suffer dog urinary problems in any given time of their life, it is still important that owners know how to at least minimize the possibilities of their dog contracting such a disease. Some of the ways to prevent this from happening are the following: giving the dog enough clean water to drink everyday, giving the dog a regular bath and shampoo, giving the dog proper nutrition and diet, bringing the dog to the vet regularly for check-up, and giving the dog citrus juices and vitamin C.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, then chances are your dog has UTI. In such cases, it is best to bring your dog to the veterinarian so that it will be given proper medication. Do not try to give your dog antibiotics from your shelf, which are usually prescribed for humans as such medicines may not be advisable for dogs. It is always best to consult a veterinarian before giving your dog any medication.
Dog urinary tract infections are life-threatening for dogs. However, they are highly curable. The most important thing is that as a dog owner, you are able to suppress the growth of the infection by knowing its different signs and symptoms.
Trying to find a solution to urinary tract infection in dogs or searching for a remedy for incontinence in dogs, look to the experts.

Canine kidney disease is a very grave illness that affects many dogs. It can become life threatening very quickly and there are a number of things that cause the problem. Below you will find out what some of the usual causes of canine kidney disease are.
Bacteria is a major cause of kidney disease in dogs. It is pretty common for a dog to suffer from urinary tract infections. Infections like this are caused by bacteria that get in through the urethra and make it to the bladder. When these infections go untreated, then the bacteria can get into the kidneys. There, it will cause injury and loss of function which is irreversible.
Trauma is another common cause of kidney failure in dogs. If your dog is hit by a car or kicked hard enough it could cause kidney failure. Fungal infections can also cause trauma to the tissues of the kidney. There are two main fungal infections that often cause kidney damage, and these are blastomycosis and canine valley fever.
Obstructions in the bladder or urinary tract can also damage the kidney of your dog. These obstructions are most commonly caused by bladder or kidney stones. Stones like this are prone to becoming contaminated with bacteria, which then increases the infection risk. When an obstruction blocks the ability for urine to flow freely, then it can become life threatening in only a day or two.
If your dog ingests toxins, this can also cause kidney disease. It is the job of kidneys to filter toxins but when a toxin is too strong, it can cause them to shut down. The most common toxin ingested by dogs is antifreeze, because it has a sweet taste that dogs like. Other things that can cause kidney failure if ingested are heavy metals, rat poison, some types of plants and turpentine. Keep all of these things out of reach of your dog.
Some types of medications that your dog must take can cause damage to the kidneys over time. You can avoid this by only giving your dog all natural medications for whatever medical problem they are having.
As you can see, canine kidney disease has a variety of sources. Some of these can be prevented, and others cannot. The most common cause of kidney failure in dogs is old age, and this cannot be treated. However, as long as you take care of your dog well, they shouldn't have to get kidney disease for any other reason.

It is not unusual for pet owners to permit their pets to sleep with them at night. In fact, one third of pet owners have at some time, permitted their pets to sleep on their beds. Dogs provide a companionship that can't be given by any other kind of animal. But this doesn't mean to say that it is unlikely for some people to let their cats and another pets sleep with them too.
It is made easier too because dogs have a sleep pattern that is very similar to ours. Dogs often rely on their owners with complete trust, which makes them a bit more relaxed during the night. This explains why most dogs fall to sleep easily and later on, enter into deep sleeps where REM sleep activities can occur. In fact, once dogs enter this stage, the owner needs to call them several times before they can truly be roused from sleep.
For sure, lots of us have already observed a dog paddling during sleep or at times, barking with his eyes closed. These dogs are believed to be dreaming. Breathing patterns can also be observed among dogs. For example, there are breeds which breathe more heavily while there are those who breathe very lightly. The heavy breathers are much more prone to snoring than those who do not breathe as heavily.
Often, dogs that snore can be quite a nuisance during the night, depending on the degree and frequency of the phenomenon. Like with humans, there are various considerations why dogs snore, although most deal with the obstruction of the passage of air in the windpipe, which in turn is caused by the collapse of certain areas along the throat. It is the same problem as with humans.
A dog that snores very loudly ought to be examined for different issues to evaluate which treatment could be best applied. Some dogs are especially susceptible to some allergies that can cause constriction in the airway. It may also be that there is some excess tissue in the areas that are inhibiting proper breathing. It is best for a veterinarian to check out different factors through careful evaluation of the dog's anatomical features and physical symptoms in general.
Is you dog overweight? I ask this because, like with humans, obese dogs are more likely to snore than thin ones. This is because they will have more flesh surrounding their throats. Therefore, they have excess tissue hanging around their throats, which can cause obstructions. Once this problem has been fixed, the chances of snoring will be decreased. This would not only be healthy for your dogs, but you may eventually enjoy a decent night's sleep too.
The general facial features of the dog affect the amount of snoring too. Some dogs seem to have squashed faces which narrows their air passages to a certain degree. The construction of their nasal passages also largely contributes to their problems of breathing. They are pretty much like humans with the flu, who are forced to breathe using only twenty-five percent of their nostril capacity. Dog breeds with shorter faces need to expend lots of effort to breathe properly. It costs them more effort to breathe and they are also more prone to snoring.
Minor surgery can give your dog great relief. Be sure though that before any decision is made, you are well educated about the potential risks and consequences of surgery to stop a dog snoring. Most are irreversible, so careful thought must be given to any operation you allow. In fact it is best to follow the guidelines provided by your veterinarian.

The most common symptoms of cat struvite stones or calcium oxalate stones in cats is when they you cat has blood in the urine, struggles in the litter box or cries out during urination. You may mistake this for your cat being constipated. What really is occurring is that your cat has a stone blocking his ureter or urethra and his toxic urine is backing up in his body. Read this to get some pointers on how to prevent this painful cat disorder.
Uroliths are cat bladder stones and are caused by an overload of minerals like magnesium and salts, phosphorous, calcium and ammonia concentrating in your cat's urine. Your cat's urine normally has this stuff in it, but when it becomes over saturated with them then these painful crystals form.
Normally cat struvite stones and calcium oxalate crystals build up slowly. When conditions are right, they grow faster and larger. The main condition that causes these crystals to start to grow is when your cat doesn't get enough water. He may not have a good fresh source of water or doesn't get wet canned food to add water to his diet.
There are different types of bladder stones with the two most common being: struvite and calcium oxalate. Struvite stones occur more frequently than calcium oxalate stones. The difference being in what they are composed.
The shape of struvite stones are fairly large and round. Struvite stones in cats have a different chemical composition than calcium oxalate stones. They develop because of high concentrations of minerals in your cat's urine usually because he's not drinking enough water. He may not be urinating regularly to because of a feline bladder infection. A feline urinary tract infection can cause him to stop urinating too.
Calcium oxalate stones are typically smaller than struvite stones. If you look at them you will see they have jagged edges instead of round edges. They lodge in your cats' bladder, or in his kidneys or in his urethra or ureter. The ureter is the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder. When it is blocked by a calcium oxalate stone the urine can't pass.
Don't wait around waiting for the stone to pass, because this is a lethal situation for your cat. A blockage in your cat's urinary system is an emergency. When your cat's urine is blockeded for even one day, he will be very sick, in excruciating pain and his kidneys will be damaged.
What You Can Do To Prevent Struvite Stones In Cats
You may have heard about dog's getting struvite stones and they can. The difference is that struvite stones in dogs is caused by a canine urinary tract infection, not by a concentration of minerals in the dog's urine.
There is a good chance cat bladder stones will reoccur. It is wise to plan on a preventative program so you and your cat don't have to deal with cat struvite stones again.
This definitely needs to include plenty of fresh water every day. Don't let the bowl sit around with yesterday's water. Let your cat watch you do this chore and he'll reward you by immediately lapping up the fresh water.

Its critical to seek immediate veterinary treatment when you notice the signs of a problem kidney in a cat. The earlier your cat gets treatment the more chances she has for a longer life with you. While chronic renal failure arrives over a long period of time, acute kidney failure is an emergency. Here's some tips to recognizing the symptoms of kidney failure in cats.
Feline kidneys are vulnerable to a number of life-threatening disorders that can lead to a failing kidney in a cat or chronic renal failure. Your vet would probably agree with the statistics that they see more cats 7 years and older that are showing signs of kidney failure in cats.
The risk for feline kidney disease may be inherited. Some long-haired breeds like Angoras and Persians and short-haired cats like the Abyssinian are more genetically predisposed to kidney problems, either acute or chronic renal failure.
The main difference between chronic and acute kidney failure in cats is that acute renal failure is a very severe situation that occurs relatively suddenly - over a week or a month. Chronic renal failure creeps up on your cat over a longer time, years even.
The most common cause of kidney failure in cats occurs when your cat swallows a toxic substance like antifreeze, pesticides, cleaning fluids and human medications. Common causes of acute renal failure include blockages that prevent a good flow of blood to the kidney in a cat or stones and inflammations blocking the flow of urine from the kidney into the bladder.
Signs Of Kidney Failure In Cats
Occasional vomiting Increase in water consumption Increase in urination Weight loss Loss of appetite
Your vet may refer to some of these symptoms with the terms "polydipsia" or "polyuria". Polydipsia means that your cat is drinking a lot of water - lots of it. On the other end, In fact, you this may be the first sign your recognize of a problem kidney in a cat. When you clean the litter box you find numerous pee-balls of cat litter, or unusually large ones.
If your vet suspects kidney failure in a cat she will evaluate your cat's BUN. BUN stands for blood urea nitrogen, as well as the creatinine levels. When these are elevated it means your cat's kidneys aren't working right and need extra help.
Traditionally, treating renal failure in cats is determined by the disorder causing the condition. If acute kidney failure is caused by a urinary tract blockage the stone must be removed immediately. Treating chronic renal failure is done with a more conservative approach. This may include intravenous fluid therapy and changes to diet.

The desire for healthy, organic food appears to apply just as much to animals as to humans, since a lot of animal owners prefer to buy organic foods to feed man's best friend. One could be forgiven for being surprised at the large amount of organic dog food on offer on the market. Just like for humans, there are a lot of pet illnesses that one could cure or even prevent completely by the use of organic pet food.
For instance, organic dog food could reduce the risk of the dog getting skin diseases and allergies. The explanation for the positive health impact is the absence of additives, chemicals, colourants and pesticides. Instead there are just grain extracts and high quality proteins as ingredients in organic dog food. Organic dog food also contains more nourishment, which is reflected in the higher levels of energy and the normal weight of the dog.
Healthy, organic dog food contains more nutrients, which is reflected in the higher levels of energy and the normal weight of the dog. Furthermore, regular dog food can cause diabetes and excess weight with all the other problems that accompany these illnesses: back ailment, organ failure and decreased mobility. How can organic dog food help here, then? Well, simply because organic pet food does not contain bulk filler; they are nutrient-packed products that create energy not fat. Moreover, it is far better and definitely a lot easier to prevent health issues than try to treat them afterwards.
A more efficient digestion and a stronger immunity system are the other main benefits that come with the feeding of organic pet food. Due to the absence of chemicals normally present in ordinary pet food, your dog will no longer vomit or experience wind or diarrhea. A healthier metabolism is what will result from a healthy diet. Furthermore, the quality of the nutritional substances in organic dog food, boosts the immunity functions, thereby reducing the risks of infection and all sorts of specific diseases that affect dogs on an everyday basis.
Many veterinarian experts claim that organic dog food significantly increases the life span of any animal, not to mention the fact that it will go through old age a lot better. It is quite common that pet owners who choose organic dog food, are also interested in applying the same health rules to their own diet, sticking to clean natural products that enhance bodily functions and avoid toxins and disease.
Ask your dog food provider about organic dog food and if there is none available in your local shop, try to order it online. There are plenty of web sites that offer such foods at fairly good prices.
One last bit, be very, very careful with dried dog food like biscuits, no matter what it says on the packet. A few years ago, I had a dog called Becky that remained at home alone during the day, while I went to work. I didn't like to leave her tinned food, because of flies, bacteria and vermin, so I bought dry food, which would not deteriorate during the day. However, within six years she had gotten diabetes, which meant that I had to inject her with insulin every morning. Sometimes, she would have a fit. The veterinary said that it was very common for dogs fed only on dry biscuits to get diabetes, so check the food with your vet first or feed organic tinned food.

Dog owners will explain that there is no proven formula for choosing a good name for a new dog or puppy. Whether they have to come up with girl or boy dog names, they will normally pick a name that sounds trendy or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name really means. Popular boy dog names have meanings, as do human names, so more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Here we give a list of the top five boy dog names and what they actually mean.
Undoubtedly, one of the first things you do when you get a new dog or puppy is choose a dog name for him or her. For most dog owners, this actually takes little thought. They just choose a dog name at random and that is the name by which the poor animal will be known forever. However, there are certain issues that ought to be taken into consideration when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose a suitable one.
First of all, dogs can sense attitude and tone of voice better than we are able to. If you choose a dog name for comic effect or after someone you don't like, your dog will know by your tone of voice that something is not right. As a result, their attitudes may change towards you or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs' names should mean something but should not be detrimental to their training, so you should really take the decision of the dog name carefully.
Despite dogs being very clever animals, they can't process the same amount of information that we can. As a result, dog names should never be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the syllables are easily heard. They respond to these dog names and that will improve your probability of training them successfully.
However, dogs' names should help them mould an identity of their own. Popular names don't really allow them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters grow a lot without damaging their ability to respond to a command.
Max: This is probably the most popular boy dog name and the meaning is surely why most people choose it for their hound. It literally means "the greatest". After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the greatest.
Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means "conqueror". This is an apt boy dog name, if your puppy takes over the house within moments of setting foot inside it!
Buddy: Buddy is a familiarization of Budd, which means "messenger". This boy dog name could suit a farm dog or one you might train to bring in the newspaper of a morning. It is quite a popular boy dog name and can be very widely heard throughout the US.
Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means "steward". This is pretty apt if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is probably suitable for a Labrador or collie puppy, for example!
Sam: Sam apparently means "an answer to prayers". This is a good boy dog name for dogs that are easy to train and are very little work!
Very few people consult the meaning of names when choosing boy dog names, so instead of going with your first thought, it may be worth taking the time to choose a dog's name that actually suits your dog. It costs nothing to spend a little time in thought about your dog's name.
