Breeding bettas is fairly easy because all you need to do is to acquire a ten-gallon aquarium and a pair of male and female fish. Once you get all of these, you may start conditioning the pair of bettas by giving them high-quality foods for two weeks straight before the breeding process starts. While you are preparing your fish pair for breeding, it is important that you clean first the tank where they will breed.

Your tank should be cleaned with warm water without detergent. You should add no more than six inches of water should be put into the tank before preparing the heater and sponge strainer. While warming up and before putting in the necessary bacteria starters for breeding and water conditioners, make sure you have followed specific directions for successful outcome in reproducing your first batch of betta fish.

After all the necessary steps, put first your male betta fish to the tank area first and let him get to know his surroundings first. The male betta fish should be the first into the tank because it is vital for him to get to know his new environment more and be comfortable with it. Once you have introduced the male fish to his tank, you may do the same for the female but make sure to keep them separated first by keeping a divider inside.

You will be the one to judge if your betta fish are ready to breed, observe their actions first before you release them to each other. To judge if your male betta fish is ready, he should be moving his fins around the female while building a bubble nest. To know if the female is ready to reproduce, vertical lines should be seen on her body.

The vertical lines on the female betta fish' body are quite hard to find if you're breeding light-colored fish so you should observe your fish well before you make the next step. If you have confirmed that your female betta fish is ready for breeding, you should release her after a day or two after she first came into the tank. It is best to release the female at this period to ensure good interaction between her and the male fish.

Once the fish pair meets, they will run around each other and "fight" which is their usual pre-reproduction interaction. Before mating, the fish pair will engage in a "dance" where the male fish will try to chase the female betta fish' fins violently. After two days, the female betta fish will be ready to reproduce and she will approach the male fish submissively.

At this period, do not bother the fish as much as possible-even feeding them isn't necessary while they are having "interaction" with each other. After this so-called "interaction", the betta fish might appear to be motionless but this shouldn't cause you to worry. In a short while, the female fish will expel all the eggs and after this, you should separate the fish pair again.

Choosing South American Cichlid tank mates is not difficult at all. There are a few things that you need to consider before you make any quick decisions while at your favorite pet store.

The first thing that you must consider is the size of your cichlid species. Obviously, don't choose fish or invertebrates that appear to be able to fit in their mouth. It is not fool proof, but it makes for a good rule of thumb.

Next, don't pick a tankmate that has the potential to be more aggressive than the dominant species in your cichlid tank. Take this for example. Angel fish and Oscar fish will make great tankmates when they are small. But as they start to get bigger, the Oscars will beat up the docile Angels.

Those are a few obvious points about choosing tankmates for your cichlids, but lets get to the issue of this article. So what are the best tankmates for cichlids. Catfish, that's right, Catfish. But lets get a little bit more specific. What about Corydoras. These little guys are some of my favorite tropical fish, and they make great tankmates for all sorts of cichlids.

When choosing corys , make sure you consider the size of your Cichlids. If you have a mature Oscar tank, choosing the smaller types of corys is bad idea. Your Oscars will love the snack and vacuum them up like skittles. Choose one of the larger varieties like Corydoras aeneus.

The larger types of corys like the bronze and green varieties, will reach full size at about three inches. So they should make good tankmates for even the larger types of American Cichlids.

Here is a very important thing that you must consider if you choose corydoras as tankmates for Oscars. Sometimes they simply don't follow the rules and do as they please. For the best results with pairing Oscars and corys, it is best to raise them together so they are used to having each other around. Here is a cory tip. Plecostomus or Hypostomus plecostomus belong to the family Loricariidae. Loricariidae means armored catfish named so because the armor-like longitudinal rows of scutes that cover the upper parts of their bodies. This armor is actually composed boney platelets as opposed to the scales that are normally associated with fish.

The taxonomical designation plecostomus only describes a single species of armored catfish within the family Loricariidae. There are, however, over 50 scientifically classified and many more as yet unclassified species within this family native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the lower western hemisphere. All have the shared trait of ingesting algae as part of their dietary intake and have become known world wide as algae eaters. Plecostomus, plecos or plecs, although not scientifically accurate, are used interchangeably when referring to these algae eating armored catfish.

Plecos are inarguably one of the most popular choices among freshwater aquarium owners. Their unique, almost pre-historic, features undoubtedly contribute to their popularity. These features are not coincidental. Fossil records of Loricariidae date as far back as the Miocene period. It is, however, their dietary habits that have won them a home in so many aquariums around the world.

Plecos are also frequently referred to as suckermouths. This is understandable if you have ever seen one hang the full weight of its body from its mouth on the side of an aquarium. In nature, these fish inhabit a wide range of ecosystems but prefer the swift moving waters of rain driven rivers and streams. Their suction cup mouths allow them to remain virtually immobile in the strongest torrential runoffs. This same suctioning ability is one of the most effective means of taking in organic debris from the bottoms of streams and riverbeds ever produced by nature.

The name plecostomus applies to a single species of armored catfish. This is a very large fish and should only be housed in an aquarium of adequate size. The terms plecostomus, plecos, and algae eater, on the other hand, have become generic labels in the aquarium trade industry. They encompass a variety of Loricariids all of which are breeds of armored catfish. The adult size of these individual species varies considerably. This information is usually included as part of the product description both on the internet and in local retail stores. If the information is not present, ask. Choosing the right size maintenance fish for the right size aquarium will save you from future headaches down the road. Some species will only grow to a maximum length of two inches while other will out grow a small aquarium before you know what happened.

Armored catfish are excellent additions to any community tank. They are bottom dwellers by nature. Bottom dwellers as a rule tend to ignore the activities of their fellow tank mates. When they venture up from their substrate domain to clean the interior walls of your aquarium they will remain focused on the task at hand rather than the fish swimming passed them.

When it comes to the bottom of an aquarium, the plecos is king of its turf. Most armored catfish species are highly territorial. Of course this can be said for the vast majority of bottom dwellers. It is inadvisable to try to keep more than bottom dweller in an aquarium. Younger plecos may be tolerant of each other but as they continue to grow in both age and size that tolerance usually proves short lived. There are very few bottom dwelling fish that will peacefully coexist with one another.

Armored catfish are nocturnal by nature. They feed at night and rest during the day. If your aquarium has rock work or hollow decor the plecos will pick a spot to call home. This is where he will spend his days, out from under the bright aquarium lights. If you are not considerate enough to provide your aquatic friends with adequate hiding place a plecos will settle down on the bottom of the aquarium to sleep until it is time to awake and start foraging.

Plecos are omnivores. In an aquarium, just as in nature, these catfish will consume just about anything. This is what scavenger fish do. Contrary to what you may believe, they derive the majority of their dietary intake from ingesting decomposing organic matter foraged off the aquarium substrate and not from the consumption of algae.

Plecos are one of the most self sufficient fish you can have in an aquarium. This is easy to take for granted. It is inadvisable to assume that foraging will provide your plecos with enough nutrients to keep it healthy and fit. This is especially true if you own a larger member of the plecos family.

There are many products on the market designed to address bottom dwellers' dietary needs. Sinking pellets and wafers will help guarantee that your plecos is getting enough to eat. Fruits and vegetables make an excellent dietary supplement. They will scarf down leafy veggies like spinach and lettuce without hesitation. Skewering little chucks of broccoli, squash or cauliflower to a safety pin and letting it sink is like inviting your pleco to an all you can eat buffet.

Plecos rarely breed in an aquarium. All attempts to commercially tank breed them have been unsuccessful. They have, however, been successfully bred in Florida, Singapore, and Hong Kong. They are kept in large ponds with steep sides to prevent their escape. Plecos will dig borrows in the bottom or banks of these ponds to deposit their eggs. The ponds are drained after the eggs hatch. Neon tetras are officially classified to the family Characidae. To most of the world they are known as Characins. This family includes 776 species in 152 different genera. Neons are indigenous to Northwest and Central Brazil, including the Amazon River and its tributaries.

Neons are an all time favorite among freshwater aquarium owners. In any given mouth approximately 1.8 million neon tetras are exported to the US alone. Their petite size most certainly contributes to their popularity. They rarely exceed an inch and a quarter in length. You can keep an entire school of them in an aquarium no bigger than 5 gallons. They are the perfect choice for desktop nano tanks.

A large part of their appeal is almost certainly due to their brilliant color palette. Their bodies and fins are translucent revealing whatever color is in the background. A luminescent blue stripe runs from their eye sockets down almost the entire length of their bodies. Just beneath this, a vibrant red stripe runs from the center of their body to the base of their transparent caudal fin.

Yet another member of the tetra family you may wish to consider for visual interest is the cardinal tetra. Cardinal tetras are slightly more colorful than neons. The brilliant red stripe that is present in the posterior section of a neon's body runs throughout the entire length of the cardinal's. This does increase visual interest from a color standpoint. The increase in color, however, greatly reduces the translucent aspect of this species bodies. The choice boils down to a question of color over transparency. You may wish to consider the fact that cardinals are much less likely to breed in captivity than neons before making a final decision.

Neons are by nature a skittish species. They spook rather easily. They are also very small fish that could easily be perceived as a source of nutrition by larger species. They do however make excellent community fish if you take these factors into consideration. An abundance of plants and or rockwork will provide sufficient hiding place and help them feel confident in their new surroundings. Avoid keeping them with species that will grow large enough to ingest them. Following these simple rules will keep your neons healthy, happy and most importantly, alive!

Neons are mid-tank swimmers. They are shoaling fish. Shoaling fish do not cope well when isolated from other members of their own species. Many will not survive in solitude. It is advisable to have at least four neons in your aquarium. This will help to insure that they adjust well to their new environment.

Another thing you should be aware when selecting potential tank mates; Tetras are well known for their propensity to nibble on the fins of other species. This instinctive behavior is more likely to occur in larger groups. You should avoid mixing them with long finned varieties such as bettas and angelfish.

Neons are omnivores. They are perfectly cable of surviving on common tropical fish flakes. They thrive in slightly acidic (pH 6.8) with water temperatures between 70-79F. If properly care for, you can expect these fish to live in excess of 5 years.

The aquarium trade is a relatively young industry. Goldfish were virtually unknown in the United States until their public debut at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. After the conclusion of WWII, massive fleets of transportation and cargo vessels were now free to pursue commercial interests. Neon tetras were one of the very first tropical species to be introduced to the burgeoning fish hobby industry. They are very much responsible for helping to transform this hobby into the global enterprise it is today. Part of this globalization included the development of commercial fish hatcheries. The vast majority of neon tetras sold in the world are raised to support this industry rather that caught in the wild.

So you're ready to discover the very exciting and rewarding world of owning tropical fish? You have made an excellent choice! Exotic pet ownership is fun and challenging. You have a lot of responsibilities at the beginning but once you've learned about how to care of your tropical fish, you'll be good to go. This beginner's tropical fish guide should help make things a bit easier as you prepare for your new pets.

Your first task is to get a tank. While you're probably ready to take on the world and buy the biggest and best tank you can find, take a break and think first. You've never done this before and any failure will be a huge failure if you go overboard. Don't be too overzealous, start small and work your way up. A tank that is 10-20 gallons is perfect for beginners.

If you don't have a tank already, go purchase a small one. You also need a filter and light as well as other supplies to clean the tank. Buy the food you'll need ahead of time as well. You can design a tank that is creative and colorful or if you prefer, very basic. Just make sure that whatever you do, you buy quality products. Things you buy that are less than well crafted can cost you down the road.

You need to buy a solid tank with a lid and a stand that will hold your fish tank. You also will need to buy a light and a filter for your fish tank. Before you do anything, clean your fish tank with warm water. If you use any sort of soap or detergent, it is imperative that you rinse your tank thoroughly. You don't want to poison your fish!

Make sure that your tank is completely clean and then add about an inch of rocks to the bottom of the tank. There is a variety of colored and ornate gravel that you can purchase for your tank. Get creative and give your new pets a beautiful home to enjoy.

Heat your new tank to about eighty degrees Fahrenheit. This is the prime temperature for your tropical fish. Make sure to check the temperature frequently once the fish are living in the tank. You don't want to accidentally kill them by having them be too hot or too cold.

Set up your light in the tank before adding your fish. Fish like light but having your tank directly in front of the window will cause algae to grow out of control and you'll have a difficult time with regulating temperature. Once you've got the water added, gradually warm it and then get to the pet store! There are a lot of places you can buy tropical fish from. There are specialty shops that can order any kind of tropical fish for you if they don't have them in stock. You can also buy tropical fish in most local pet shops.

Select breeds that are known to get along well together. Certain breeds are predatory and will eat each other. This is not what you want the children to witness. If the pet shop owner doesn't know what kinds of fish get along the best, go do your own research before making your purchase or only buy one breed to start.

Take care when you go to feed your new pets. Tropical fish require a very specific diet and should be eating at the same time of day, every day. Never feed them too much and if you're going away, have someone feed your fish. Take care of your tank and your fish should prosper. Fish are great starter pets for kids. They do not need a great deal of attention or special care, like a dog might. They are quiet, reliable pets. Though the fish themselves require minimal care, there is much aquarium maintenance that one needs to think about. If a fish is the first pet your child ever has, teach them proper care. It is a good foundation for taking further responsibility with more complicated pets later on.

When choosing a fish tank, consider getting a good-size tank rather than a fishbowl. The bigger the tank you have, the more water, and the less likely that any contaminant will affect the fish.

You can also have more fish in a bigger tank, and they can all live happily and have their own space. Why buy all of the equipment for a tank and have just a solitary, lonely fish? The fish themselves are very inexpensive and do not require much food. Having more fish is good for the health of all the others because it is more like a natural environment. It is good for them to interact.

Your goal is to keep the ecology in the tank as normal as possible. The fewer the fish, the less genetic diversity, and the more chance of an ecological disturbance if a fish is sick or dies. Think of how life really is in an live body or water.

The maintenance of a tank depends on what type of fish you have. If you have fresh water fish, you do not have to worry quite as much. If you have salt water fish, you need to measure the salt content of the water you put in. Salt may require specialized systems for briny species. It can be difficult to measure the levels.

Apart from the system, which you should discuss and decide upon with the sales associate at the pet store, the system should be cleaned every two weeks. That is how often the water should be changed. You should be taking some out and replacing it with new. Usually between ten and thirty percent is sufficient. Once again, a tank is not the same as an open body of water. Contaminants will infiltrate because there is only so much water to deal with. You can reduce water changes and create a healthy ecosystem with the new EcoBio-Block products. They are volcanic blocks which contain beneficial bacteria which multiply in the block and then populate your fish tank, breaking down toxins, clarifying cloudy water, and eliminating odors.

The gravel should be vacuumed occasionally, removing large pieces of organic waste. (This job will also be reduced with the use of the EcoBio-Block). You should check the filters every couple of weeks to look for any clogs (if they are left too long, you will definitely notice a dirty tank and probably some dead fish). You can also test the water for pH levels occasionally, or more often if they seem stressed and you can't find any other possible reason.

Change the filter inserts at least once per month to ensure everything is going all right. Apart from that, just be observant. Count your fish, if you have a lot of them. Watch how they play with each other every day, if there is bullying, if some are not getting any food, or if others are getting too much. If you have an overly aggressive fish, you should remove it.

Glofish do not exist in nature. They were created in a laboratory. No, you are not seeing things. You may not read about it on the front page of USA Today. You may not hear about it on a television commercial break that ends with the words, "film at 11." BUT... whether you realize it or not there have been over 660 patents issued on biogenetically engineered animals in the USA alone. And that number is growing every year. Transgenic animals are being patented like the never before seen, latest feature on a microwave oven or the next generation of digital music player. The difference is that here we are talking about living, breathing organisms rather than motherboards and microchips.

The Golfish just turned 10 years old. Happy birthbay! Just a decade ago there was no such thing as a Glofish. What exactly would be the purpose for making a fish glow? Good question, especially if you stop to consider how much easier they would for a potential predator to find and decide they might make a tasty snack. But the goal was not to create a fish that screamed out, "Here I am. Come eat me." Nor was it to create an entirely new species for the thriving global ornamental fish industry. In fact, monetary gain did not come into play at all when in 1999 when Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and his team of bioengineers at NSU (the National University of Singapore) decide to genetically modify a preexisting freshwater species of fish to make it glow. So if eradicating a nuisance species by making it more easily detectable, or accumulating a vast fortune by creating a "must have" novelty item for the hungry fish hobbyist market was not the objective, then what was? As incredulous as it may sound, the objective was to create a fish that would selectively luminescence when it came into contact with environmental contaminants. Hmmm... a fish that fights pollution by tracking industrial ecological offenders to their source, we might be on to something here! Do you think it was a sheer coincidence that the first Glofish ever created was GREEN?

So exactly what is involved in creating a species that is biologically designed to help save the planet? The logical first step is to engineer a fish that glows to begin with. Once you have a fish that glows then you can set about tackling the issue of selective bioluminescence.

These are the obstacles Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and his colleagues decided to overcome in 1999. The first step was to select a fish. The geneticists chose the Brachydanio reri a rather small fish in the minnow family native to India. This species is more commonly known as a zebra danio or zebrafish because of it distinctive horizontal stripping. Zebrafish are raised on fish farms in Singapore for export so their eggs were readily available.

With the selection process complete it was now time to initiate phase one of the process of creating the world's fist aquatic toxic avenger. The genetics team integrated a bioluminescent gene found in crystal jellyfish known as GFP (Green Flourescent Protein) into a fertilized zebrafish egg and allowed it to gestate. The introduction of this gene into the embryo's genome produced fluorescent green zebrafish. Experimentation with a variation of GFP resulted in yellow fluorescing fish. RFP (Red Flourescent Protein) found in certain species of sea coral added yet another twist in the spectrum of what was soon to be called Glofish.

The creation of the world's first florescent fish was bound to draw some attention. It did not take long for news of NUS's success to reach the desks of entrepreneurs Alan Blake and Richard Crockett. They wasted no time in sewing up exclusive worldwide rights for the sell of Glofish. Yorktown Technologies of Austin, Texas then went to work commercially raising Glofish for the thriving aquarium trade industry. Fortunately for Blake and Crockett, fish farms for the production of zebra danios had been in existence in the southern parts of United States since as early as the 30s. It was not much of a leap to raise a species that is only a single gene removed.

Glofish were slated to hit the market in late 2003. The question now becomes how should both national and regional governmental agencies react to the idea of a genetically engineered organism being unleashed on the general public? The European Union outright banned the sell of all genetically modified organisms within its member countries. The distribution or possession of Glofish is also prohibited in Canada, Australia, and Japan. Glofish are legal in 49 states in the U.S. The State of California issued the Environmental Quality Act to halt the sell of GloFish before they were even available to the public. Who would have thought something as benign as an ornamental aquarium fish would create such a stir? Ironically, fluorescing quickly became top sellers within the aquarium trade in most of Asia and in the U.S.

There is far more to consider here than just the subject of genetic manipulation. Environmentalists have longed cautioned on the unforeseen and possibly devastating consequences of introducing an unknown factor into an established ecosystem. The sell of piranha is illegal in most of the United States and much of the world for fear that one of the most predacious species in existence will suddenly and irreversibly establish itself as the number one predator at the top of the food chain. Common sense dictates that this is perhaps the most extreme example one could come up with. While this is true, there are a number of instances relating to a new species being introduced into previously uninhabited aquatic eco-system. The southern platyfish of Central America has established feral populations in Florida, Montana, Columbia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Hong Kong ecologists have indicated that the introduction of this species inflicted serious damage on its freshwater ecosystems. The sword tail, another popular aquarium fish native to both North and South America, has reproduced at such an alarming rate that its presence is threatening the indigenous freshwater species of both Africa and Australia. Both of these species introductions into previously uninhabited waters are aquarium trade related. Fish are not like an item in your local supermarket. Once they have made their way into the wild they can't be subject to a product recall and quickly pulled off the shelf.

Do Glofish pose a threat? The end of World War II marked beginning of an explosion in the aquarium trade industry. There is only a single gene separating Glofish from their natural counterpart, zebra danio. Over 200 million of these fish have been imported and sold in the U.S. alone over the past half century. Zebrafish are incapable of surviving the temperate water conditions in all but the most southern states. To date, there has not been a single report of an established reproducing population in the wild anywhere in the United States.

A lot has happened since Glofish first hit the market in 2003. In the name of progress scientists have created fluorescing pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats. I'm not sure how I would react if I suddenly realized that my daughter's cat just gave birth to a litter of kittens that glowed under a black light. Although I'm willing to be that she would think it was the coolest thing since Sponge Bob Square Pants. Fish, on the other hand, can not impregnate an entire neighborhood if left to prowl freely. If the zebra danio was adaptable enough to become one of the ever growing number of nuisance species as a result of their global exportation they would already be on the list. While the sale of a genetically altered fish simply because they look prettier than their "natural" counterparts may be ethically questionable, they are strikingly beautiful fish. It almost begs the question, "How many times have you upgraded a cell phone in perfect working order simply because the new model cooler, was more compact, or everyone in the office had a newer model than yours?

Angelfish, Pterophyllum Scalare, are classified to the family Cichlidae. This family is also referred to by the name cichlids. These fish originated in the river systems of South America.

Angels are elegant and graceful creatures. Angelfish are an all time favorite among fish lovers throughout the world. Their distinctive body structure inarguably facilitated their unparalleled popularity. They come in a multitude of color palettes, from unadorned to banded, marbled, black, golden, or Koi. Due of their popularity they can be found at virtually any shop that markets. These fish are inexpensive to buy. Freshwater angels are one of the most worry free species you can have.

It is easy to be misled by those sweet little fish in the pet shop. The angelfish exhibited in the pet stores are juveniles. Angels normally reach six inches in length upon maturity. They can be kept in an aquarium as small as 10 gallons however 20 gallons and up is preferable.

Angelfish have mild mannered dispositions. They are ideal community dwellers. A note of caution: They will instinctively deem smaller varieties of fish as a food source. Do not keep them with smaller fish like rasboras, glofish and guppies. It is also ill advisable mixing angels with species like barbs and tetras. Both of these varieties are fin nippers by nature. An angelfish's long, flowing fins will make for an alluring taste treat, too enticing to leave behind.

Angelfish are omnivores. Their diet should consist of both plant and animal matter. You will want to make sure to purchase a fish food that is formulated for omnivores as their main staple. A high quality flake food is all you will need to keep your angelfish on top of it game. Many aquarists prefer to provide a variety of dietary supplements in addition to the primary diet. Although this is not mandatory, it is recommended. You might want to ask yourself; would you want to have the exact same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of your life? A diverse regimen will help to prevent the possibility of any nutritional deficiencies. Crushed seaweed sheets are a wonderful supplement for omnivores. So you want to set up a fish tank, well the first thing that I will tell you is that you have to be patient and should not jump right into putting fish in your tank. In this article I will be explaining all of the steps to setting up a fish tank for tropical fish only.

When you are selecting an aquarium to buy you must know what kind of fish that are going to be living in it and how big the fish will get. As a simple rule, for every inch of fish that there is there should be 1 gallon of water.

The items that you will need to set up a fish tank are the aquarium, filter pump, heat pump. Optional items that you should get also are gravel, thermometer, lamp, decorations, and a back up filter pump in case the main one goes bad.

Now that you have all the items you need next is to set up the stand and put the tank on it. Make sure you choose a good spot that will not be blocking anything you will need to get to later on like receptacles, air vents, etc.

Now that your tank is positioned right it is time to leak test it. Do this by filling the tank up completely with water and let it sit for a day or two. Inspect the surrounding area for any signs of water, nothing is worse than a leaky aquarium, bad for your home and the fish. Once you are sure there are no leaks go ahead and empty the tank.

While you are leak testing your aquarium you can start filling up jugs of tap water. Mix the tap water with water conditioner as fish do not like plain tap water. I also add bacteria supplement to the water also. Make sure you follow the directions on the water conditioner bottle exactly.

Next you can start adding gravel, make sure that you rinse the gravel very good. Since the tank is still empty you can start putting in the gravel and decorations. It is very important to make sure that everything that you put into your fish tank is washed well, as it only takes a little bit of dish soap to kill fish.

Start setting up the filter pump and the heating pump. Add the water solution from the jugs that you already pre-mixed, fill the tank up to about an inch from the top. Put the overhead lamp on if you have one and turn on the heater and the filter pump, you now want to be patient and let the water cycle for a week at the minimum.

Let the fish tank cycle the water for at least one week. After that one week you can add a couple of fish to get the tanks ecosystem in action, but do not add anymore fish for at least 5 weeks. Be patient and your fish will be healthy and live for a long time.

If you have ever seen a Discus fish, you know they are extremely beautiful, making them a very popular choice for aquariums. Discus fish come in many various sizes, colors, and shapes. Discus fish that are still growing should be fed on average of 4 to 5 times per day, whereas adult fish should only be fed twice per day.

Before buying a Discus fish, many people want to know their lifespan. They have been known to live as long as 15 years if well cared for. They usually cost between $25-$30 for smaller fish and about $150 for larger ones. Rare varieties of Discus fish can be as high as $400.

Aquariums are known to give people a perfect opportunity to beautify their houses or offices with fish. There are several varieties of aquariums available but this mainly depends on the size and shape. The styles of aquariums are also known to largely depend on materials that are used during their production. For example, types of aquariums available can either be glass or acrylic. Since there are so many aquariums that are being sold, it is a hard task to decide on a perfect one. The following are a few factors that an individual should consider when purchasing aquariums.

Location of the Aquarium

The first consideration that needs to be taken into account before buying an aquarium is where the aquarium will be placed. Take into account what the weight of the aquarium will be when it is filled with water. Ensure that the stand or table where it will be placed is strong enough to support it. It is also important for the aquarium to be placed in an area that is not exposed to direct sunlight. Consider also the room's dcor; if the surrounding dcor will be able to complement the aquarium's presence.

The Size of the Aquarium

Once the perfect location has been identified, the next step is to choose the appropriate size of the aquarium. The aquarium size will depend on the number of fish the individual intends to have. To be able to obtain the size of the aquarium, measure the location where the tank will be placed. The larger the fish aquarium the easier the maintenance will be. It will also be much easier for the person to maintain the correct water balance for the large aquarium than with smaller aquariums. Large aquariums also prevent the fish from overcrowding. Lastly, the size bought will depend on the finances available.

Shape of the Aquarium

Aquarium tanks come in several shapes but the most common shapes that are available are tanks that are rectangular in shape. However, it is also possible to find other fish tank shapes such as round, cylindrical and hexagon. When one puts the shape of the aquarium into consideration, then tanks that have larger surface areas should be purchased. This is because the surface is very important especially since oxygen enters into the tank through it. It is also advisable to choose long tanks but not tall ones. This is due to the fact that long tanks enable the fish to have easy movements in the aquarium.

Glass or Acrylic

Aquariums can be made from either acrylic or glass. Acrylic aquariums are not as heavy as glass tanks. With acrylic fish tanks, one is able to get clear images of the fish without any distortions compared to glass tanks. On the other hand, glass aquariums are easy to clean since they do not easily scratch.

If you own an aquarium, keeping your fish happy and healthy is the most important thing. Fish can get many diseases and this can be costly and stressful. Preventing disease is the best cure. There are some things that you can do to stop and prevent diseases.

The most common way for your fish to get sick is by contracting it from another fish. This can be easily prevented, by paying attention to the tank. When you bring home new fish, you can get lots of disease in your tank. Before you purchase a fish make sure it acts normally and does not have any weird bumps or things on their body. After you buy the fish, just make sure you watch them for a while to make sure nothing weird happens.

Diseases can enter a tank if the tank is not cleaned properly. When you clean your tank, wash out the tank well. Try not to use bleach, because if any residue is left it will kill your fish. If you use soap, you need to make sure all of the soap is washed out of the tank.

The plants, gravel and dcor should also be washed. When the fish are healthy move them into the clean tank. Watch that tank for a few days to make sure the disease if fully killed. If any disease re-established, move the fish back into the infected tank until the disease is gone. Move all the healthy fish into the other tank that is healthy. Clean the infected tank out fully.

If you get a disease in a tank, you should always have a backup tank to move the fish into. If some of your fish are already infected, move the healthy fish into the other tank. The sick fish should be treated in the same tank until they are healthy. After the fish are healthy again, move them into the other tank, and clean the infected tank out.

Keeping your tank clean a healthy is key for your fish to survive. If your tank gets a disease, try to clean the tank ASAP. The best weapon to not getting a disease is to not buy infected fish. When you spot a fish acting differently, it may have a disease. Watch your tank if a fish is acting strangely, to spot a disease before it infects others.

Although maintaining the clown fish is not a hard task, they are not flexible and thus cannot adapt to different habitats like the mollies do. The shrimp is the fourth popular type of fish. Among the different types of shrimp available, the clean shrimp is the most popular.

In their natural surroundings, it is common for fish to eat only when they are hungry. Whenever there is an abundance of food, fish eat much food however, when there is not much food they can go for several days without eating. This trend has made fish to become opportunistic in that whenever they get much food they make sure they have eaten to their full.

The type of food fed to fish depends on whether they are herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. Before getting the fish, it is important to find out from the pet supplier what type of fish they are. If the fish resembles a catfish, then it is likely that they are fresh water fish meaning they feed on fish flakes, wafers as well as algae pellets.

Saltwater fish are often herbivores and their favored food is sea weed and veggie clips will also need to be purchased and placed in the tank. Some form of emerald entry and plankton could supplement the herbivorous diet.

The carnivorous types of fish often need various meat types which require chopping into tiny pieces. For this, chopped fish, clams and shrimp are the best. Frozen food such as brine shrimp and mysis can be given to the fish as well. All these food kinds can be obtained from the assorted pet stores.

Immature fish like mollies or guppies require baby fish food, which is also available in pet stores. This food is small enough to fit inside the mouths of these minute fish. If fed with flakes they have to be crushed to reduce their size.

The diet favored by goldfish is very specific and it includes flakes or pellets of high quality as well as veggie diet consisting of zucchini, cucumber green peas, water lettuce, shrimp pellets, bloodworms and duckweed. Tropical fish should not share an aquarium with goldfish.

This is because they have a different diet that cannot complement each others nutritional needs. Goldfish further release a high amount of ammonia, which cannot be handled by the tropical fish species. To find out just how much to feed the fish, try and distinguish just how much the fish are able to eat in five minutes time and that is sufficient amount.

There is no set frequency for the feeding of the fish but they may be fed up to five times a day. It is important to note that it is not just the amount but also the quality of food that matters for fish.

There are various types of goldfish and which can be distinguished by their different head shape, colors and looks. Some goldfish have eyes that are bulged up or face upwards. The position of the fins on the fish is another factor that is used to identify the type of fish. The tail can also be used to classify fish; there are some fish that have double tails, others split tails while some have only one tail.

Fantail goldfish have exceptional unique tails. Making a distinction of the different types of goldfish is important since, the fish responds to diverse factors such as water temperature and breeding methods.

There are four different goldfish groups that ought to be considered when identifying the classification categories.

Single tail goldfish: These have quite slender bodies and come in various colors from orange to variegated. Examples of this kind of goldfish are Commons, Bristol or London Shubunkis as well as Comets.

Compared to other things, aquariums usually require very little care and daily attention. In fact, if you started maintenance on your aquarium by the time you begin reading this article, you will probably have been through before you even finish the article. So what is involved in aquarium care? We are going to look at four aspects of aquarium care that you will find very beneficial.

One has to do with the lighting. One thing you have to remember is that aquarium light does not need to be on at all times except when observing or feeding the fish or if the aquarium contains any live plants. The room light is generally considered sufficient and will keep the finish fairly active. In fact, leaving the light on for long periods can even cause algae growth explosions which of course you do not want. So how can you ensure consistent light and dark cycles are maintained, especially if you are a forgetful aquarium owner? You can install an inexpensive electrical timer that will turn the lights on and off and this will probably leave you with peace of mind knowing that your fish are getting the right doses of light.

Good aquarium care also means that you feed the fish two or three times per day and for only two or three minutes per feeding session. If you are a beginner, this may require some practice until you know the correct amounts of food to give. Do not overfeed the fish. The side effects are obvious; the water quality deteriorates, there is increased algae growth, the water gets cloudy and this often results in fish being prone to infections and diseases. This is as a result of uneaten food that accumulates in the aquarium.

Good aquarium care also means taking the time to simply observe the fish behavior especially during mealtimes. Look to see if every fish has got something to eat. Look out for fish that are picky about their food. Of course, each type of fish acts differently and it may take some time to determine 'normal' behavior for each fish type. If you take time each day to make this observation, your experience will grow.

Also do not forget to check the aquarium equipment and ensure that everything is working as it is supposed to. Consider the various pumps, heaters and filters as the life support system of the fish. This should be done daily. Excellent aquarium care takes some time and experience and is also a source of joy when you realize that your fish are safe and happy in their aquarium habitat.

It must make any aquarium enthusiast cringe, having to feed his fish every day in the same water that they swim in, breathe in and release their bodily wastes in. If it were not for reasons of yuckiness that that such a situation could not be allowed, it would certainly be objectionable for the way this would poison the water and make it incapable of sustaining aquatic life. How do you treat your fish to a better life then? If the fish lived in a natural water body, a pond or stream, there would be enough clean water in the system that all the bodily waste would not make a difference; in a closed water body like an aquarium, it comes down to the owner of the aquarium to do something to constantly clean and freshen the water the fish live in, to give them a reasonable standard of living. Aquarium filters are the answer; though there are so many, they can hardly be called one answer.

The empathetic aquarium owner must worry most about the health implications of having his fish swimming around in a weak solution of their own bodily waste. What must all the bacteria and other pathogens in the water do to the fish? Do their eyes sting; do they breathe with difficulty in such a toxic water cocktail? Biological aquarium filters are the solution to such concerns. A biological filter is a unit that encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria inside it. These bacteria subsist on the bodily waste of fish; and they break down the poisonous ammonia in the waste into nitrogen compounds, nitrites and nitrates and these are a great way to take the sting out of the problem.

Under-gravel filters are a great example of biological aquarium filters; they're not marketed as effectively these days, owing to the fact that they are simple to build, and offer no opportunity for a killer markup, but are very effective. The idea is that the filter is placed under the bed of the aquarium; water is drawn through the gravel over the bed; the gravel filters out a large part of the suspended debris, and the bacteria that live in the gravel take care of the ammonia. The water is drawn down and sent back up after purification by message of an air stone or a powerhead.

One of the best options that modern aquarium filter technology provides is the canister filter. Canister aquarium filters force the water in an aquarium through a variety of filters and cycle the entire contents of an aquarium every hour. The result is a visibly bright and clean and aquarium that manages to be free of most kinds of impurities. A minor drawback to this type of aquarium filter is the way it keeps drawing all the water through its system constantly; this action creates quite a strong current in the tank that can be annoying to some fish.

One of the most satisfying kinds of aquarium filter to use is the sump variety. Basically a sump aquarium filter is a large aquarium-like tank by itself, used exclusively for water purification in the main tank. The sump is sectioned off into three or four areas, each one installed with a different kind of water purification system. These aquarium filters are mostly the domain of experienced do-it-yourselfers; you could have a sump with a compartment for beneficial plants, one for gravel and charcoal purification, and so on. It is easy to be bitten by the purification bug and let it run away with you though. The final test of how successful your attempts are, rests in the health of your fish population. If your veterinarian certifies them to be as healthy as can be, there's no reason why you should not congratulate yourself on a job well done.

In your quest for the perfect fish tank you will come across many problems and have many difficulties. The biggest problem can be the fish, which are in the tank. The books can give you the types of fish that work well together. For the most part the books are right and will not mislead you; but something can go wrong and the books are not always correct. The only way to be sure of the fish to be correct is experience. Sometimes experimenting is good for the success of a fish tank.

For the most part it is suggested to go by the books and get fish that are compatible. As stated before the books are not always correct, so event if it is said that the fish will be fine together than they may not be. After new fish are added to your tank, keep close attention to the fish for a week or so. If everyone in the tank is happy than you can lessen your watch more and more as time recedes.

If you find a fish that is causing a problem you must first identify the problem. The fish may be attacking all the other fish or attacking a certain group of fish. The case may be that two of the fish are battling it out or one fish does not like a certain other fish. The fish may just be digging or very hyper. Whatever the problem is it can be fixed.

Solving this problem can be easy and done without having to kill the fish. Isolating the fish that has the problem in a different tank for a while is best. If the problems cease in your main tank then the fish cannot be with the other fish in the tank, and is best left alone or maybe only with its own kind.

If you have checked everything that you possibly can then it is time to take action. First, try removing the fish and all of its kind from the tank and put them in another tank alone. This should usually solve the problem within your main tank. If you find that the fish are still acting up, that you should see if they might be sick or breeding. Give the fish a week or so in the new tank if they are still acting up, the water or temperature may be the problem. Next, experiment with the decorations in the tank. Finally, if you still are pursuing the problem then the fish might have to be given to a different home.

The most common problem with fish that have a problem is that they dislike a different fish. If you find that this is the problem then try just giving the problem the fish away. This will avoid conflict and make life easier.

So you want to get an aquarium. Your first step is to figure out what kind of fish you want. But just how do you choose from the colorful tanks on the wall of your local pet store?

This can be a daunting experience for new fish keepers. Of course, you want fish that appeal to you and have the right 'look,' but when selecting fish for your new aquarium, there are three important questions to keep in mind. First, how large will this fish grow? Second, what are the fish's water quality requirements? Finally, how well will this fish live with the other fish I want?

Community fish are fish that are usually about one inch or less. Fish keepers usually choose to populate their tanks with groups of similar community fish. Some examples of community fish are sword tails, guppies, Dwarf Gourami and Platies. When you have chosen a variety, find fish that are close to the same size. Get some advice on which varieties get along well with each other if you want to mix them. Avoid getting just one community fish because they are used to swimming in schools and will just be lonely in your aquarium. As a rule of thumb, provide one gallon of aquarium water for every inch of these fish.

Other bigger species of fish can grow from 6 inches to several feet in length. They are generally best kept alone for they are known to attack or eat smaller or weaker fish. You will need a larger aquarium to keep them in. A ten gallon tank may suffice while they are still young, but eventually, you will need to transfer them to something bigger.

When buying your fish, it is best to immediately get the aquarium that would accommodate the adult size. Once you have chosen the specific species that you like, find out how big the fish are at adult size and get the correct size aquarium. The one gallon per inch rule of thumb for the much smaller community fish would not apply to these kinds of fish.

There are some types of fish that can thrive in almost any type or condition of water. The goldfish is the most popular of these varieties. They are recognized as almost invincible. They will no doubt continue to survive even with no aquarium lights or filters, but this is not exactly wise fishkeeping practice.

The slightly more picky tropical fish need a narrower water temperature range, as well as high-quality water. To achieve the water quality these fish need, test your water frequently, use a good filter on the aquarium, and consider products like the EcoBio-Block, which improves your aquarium water quality and reduces maintenance. Some fish need a specific pH, or have other water quality requirements. Be sure to do your research so that the fish you choose have similar water requirements.

Marine or saltwater variety is the last group of fish. Keeping them, however, is recommended only when you have enough fish keeping experience with freshwater fish. Though these fish are attractive, they do require a lot of maintenance work in order to keep them healthy. Other than keeping watch over the water quality, lighting and temperature, you also have to keep track of the salt level in your aquarium. Note also that you cannot mix freshwater fish with the marine varieties in just one aquarium.

And lastly, examine every fish closely before you buy them. Check that they have healthy bright eyes, intact tails and fins, no missing scales or injury of any kind. Observe if they have healthy appetites and a high level of activity. Choose only bright and healthy looking fish.

As you can see, choosing your fish is an important factor when creating your aquarium and good choices will mean many years of enjoyment to come.

When you are setting up an aquarium, don't forget about water testing. In fact, this is one of the most important aspects of maintaining an aquarium. Before you ever place fish in your aquarium, set it up with water for several days, and start the important nitrogen cycle with a product like Ecobio-Block. During this setup period it is crucial to test the water daily to monitor the cycle. As the cycle begins you will first see an ammonia spike, and then a nitrite spike as the ammonia is converted to nitrite by beneficial bacteria. Both steps will show up on water quality tests.

After adding the fish, monitor the water chemistry daily for the first few weeks. You can shift to weekly testing if all proves well in your aquarium. Testing can be done in aquarium supply stores but for your convenience, you can just buy a water test kit and do the testing yourself.

There are many testing kits to choose from in aquarium supply stores. There are test strips that you just dip in the water to test for pH, ammonia, nitrites, water hardness, nitrates and other water quality indicators. They change color after a few minutes and you consult the guide that comes with the test kit, to tell you whether the colors indicate the water quality.

Although the testing kits appear convenient, they are unfortunately often not reliable. You can however purchase the more conclusive test kits that include a test tube. You will also need to have a thermometer to keep track of the water temperature.

The health of your fish depends a lot on the quality of water so regular monitoring is a must. You need to make the necessary adjustments and additions to your aquarium to keep the water healthy.

Healthy pH level is around 6 or 7 for most fish, but they will generally tolerate a fairly wide range of pH. Any decor, food or medication added can change the pH level in your aquarium. You can increase or reduce the pH to healthier levels by adding some chemicals. A natural, but much slower approach will be to add driftwood or peat for more acidic water or a lime rock if you want more alkaline.

High levels of ammonia are lethal to your fish. You can help to reduce ammonia levels by doing a partial water change. Nitrite levels ideally should be close to zero. If nitrite levels are rising, add beneficial bacteria to convert them into less toxic nitrates.

What will work more quickly to establish a good bacteria colony is the Ecobio-Block. This can control the levels of organic waste in the aquarium for long periods of time and keep your aquarium clear and your fish healthy.

Regular aquarium water testing is the only way to ensure that you maintain a healthy water environment for your fish.

Whether it's your first aquarium or you are an expert aquarist, bringing fish home from the store can be a tricky task for everyone. Getting your fish home safely can be easy or very difficult. With a few steps your fish can arrive home and be happy and healthy. The distance to get your fish is a big factor in getting your pets home safely. Do not dump the water into your tank; you can avoid diseases and bad water by not pouring out the water into your tank.

Cleaning your fish tank is task that must be done every few weeks or so until your tank is established. Once established, your tank will only need to be cleaned a few times a month. The size of your tank can depend on how long it takes to clean. The bigger the tank and more decor is the, the harder it will be to clean.

When cleaning a tank, changing the filters is the first step. If you have a bio filter, or power filter changing the filters is a breeze. A under gravel filter is another story. You must remove all the plants, decor and accessories. Then you must pull it out from under the gravel to clean.

Once the filters are cleaned, replace them with new ones. If you have an underground filter do not replace it back in the tank yet. If you have an established tank then leave the plants and decor, even if they have algae on them. If you do not have an established tank or smaller tank (ten gallon or smaller) then wash off all the plants and decor. If you have real plants do not wash them.

After the accessories, decor and plants have been washed do not place them back in the tank yet. The next step is to siphon the tank. Siphon no more than one third of the water out of the tank. If there is still debris at the bottom of the tank fill it with water and re siphon until all debris is gone. If you have an established tank then only siphon out some of the debris and leave a little in the gravel.

When replacing the water only use soft water so the fish do not die of shock. Soft water is water without minerals. Tap water or filtered water is considered soft water. After the water has been replaced remember to not fill the tank too high because, the plants, decor and filters have to still be added.

Replace the under gravel filter if you have one. Also consider in investing a power filter, this will make your life a lot easier. Then replace the plants and decor. You're all done, and now your tank is clean. Remember that cleaning a tank can be traumatizing for the fish, so they might be timid for a while after the clean.

Your pet seems happy and healthy. There are no obvious signs of injury or illness. There seems to be no reason to believe that your healthy pet is in jeopardy in any way. Wrong! Think again and carefully observe your pet.

Since the beginning of time, most animals have been programmed to do whatever it takes to live with pain without making it obvious. The reason is obvious - other animals looking for food might make them their next meal if they sense they are weak or injured (easy to catch and kill). Given this, even your pampered indoor puppy might be hurting and not inclined to show it. You have to keep a close eye on your pets.

Watch how your pet acts and behaves. There are numerous indicators that their health isn't what it should be. Since they are used to, and for the most part, quietly dealing with pain they will in fact make an effort to conceal or minimize the effects of any pain they feel.

Carefully observe your pet's physical characteristics. Are they losing weight for no obvious reason? Are they chewing their food more slowly, or eating less than usual? This could indicate problems with their teeth or gums. Patches of hair missing, or an obvious dulling of their coat, could be signs of internal problems. You should know how a happy, healthy pet looks and acts. Watch carefully for deviations from this norm.

As strange as it sounds to some pet owners, your pet needs to have their teeth checked routinely. They get cavities and gum diseases just like we do. Neglecting this can lead to infections and pain that becomes very difficult to treat once it advances to a certain point.

Your pet's good health will be, in part, a direct result of their diet and exercise habits. Animals who gain too much weight, just like people, are at increased risk for medical problems. You have to watch your pet to see what is happening. If they have become sluggish and reluctant to exercise or play, this could be because of arthritis or another joint disease. These conditions produce a lot of pain, and may cause your pet to become far less active and unhealthy.

Losing unnecessary pounds will help your overweight pet decrease pressure of sore joints and reduce pain. Many excellent reduced fat or low calorie pet foods are made to assist with this.

Your pet might not whimper, moan, or otherwise signal that they are in pain. Watch them and carefully observe their normal behavior. Then, when you see changes in their routine that are unexplained, you can assist your vet in figuring out what the problem might be. Anytime you see obvious changes in the way your pet behaves or goes about its daily routine, get in touch with a good animal doctor and have them examined as soon as you can. Saltwater tanks are aquariums that mimic an ocean atmosphere to support salt water fish as opposed to fresh water fish. Saltwater tanks are seen to be more difficult to maintain compared to freshwater tanks because they do not have much tolerance for fluctuations that are known to occur inside the closed environments of aquariums. If saltwater tanks are set up in the proper way, they operate like a self-supporting ecosystem.

Within this ecosystem that was artificially created, the various components depend upon each other to achieve stability. The moment a person commences fish keeping in saltwater they get involved in a balancing act that entails monitoring and maintaining a number of perimeters to keep the entire system's stability.

Stability is quite crucial inside saltwater tanks because any changes can cause illness for the fish. Among the factors known to significantly contribute to a saltwater tank's stability is the temperature it entails. In case of any temperature fluctuations the fish can get affected. Another significant factor to consider is the tank's size and for the fish to have stability, the saltwater tank needs to be big. Three different types of tanks exist for one to choose.

The best part of owning an aquarium is decorating it however you want. Decorating an aquarium can be fun, but the decorations still have to be suitable for the fish. Fish feel more secure with more hiding places. If you have only a few decorations in the tank the fish will not feel secure and not swim around the tank as much. If you have lots of hiding places then you will not be able to see the fish very often. There is a balance that you must find for a happy, healthy tank.

First, when designing an aquarium the essentials are needed such as lights, filters and heaters. The tank first needs the filters, depending on your size of tank, depends on how many filters you have. A lid for your aquarium is vital for the fishes' health. A lid protects them from outside dangers, and also can provide light. A lid is highly suggested for an aquarium hobbyist.

If you do not have a lid on your aquarium, then I suggest investing in one. A lid provides more security for the fish so that things do not get into the tank. Also a lid helps regulate the temperature in the tank. Most lids have lights and, which are very beneficial. If you can, invest in a lid with a light, most aquarium tanks come with a standard lid with a fluorescent light.

Filters are very useful and needed to keep the tank clean. If you have a power or wheel filter, decorating can be a lot easier than if you have an under gravel filter. If you have a under gravel filter then I suggest investing in a power filter, they are inexpensive and get the job done.

Heaters are necessary for fish life, but can get in the way. Make sure to put them in a place out of the way of the fish. Submersible heaters work the best. Just to be safe put at least tow heaters in your tank so that if one stops working the fish will still have one heater to regulate the habitat.

Lights are a nice add-on for an aquarium, and make the fish feel more secure. The light can give the fish a difference between night and day, so that their feeding routines stay the same.

Bubblers are great for the tank to get oxygen for the fish, and also look cool. Place bubblers off to the side of the tank so that they do not disturb the fish that do not like the bubbles.

When it comes to decorating your tank keep these tips in mind do make a tank a good living environment for the fish. The accessories and decor for the fish tank are great but keep in mind to not forget about the essentials such as filters and heaters.

Responsible fish keeping starts with how you set up your aquarium. Make sure that the aquarium can accommodate the fish you want. Many people believe that fish will swell to the size of the aquarium. Preventing them from growing to their fullest size by keeping them in a small tank is dangerous for the fish. Ultimately, you have to provide your fish a bigger tank if they outgrow their smaller tank.

Find out as much as you can about the fish that you plan to keep, to know what size of aquarium you need to get for them. It is best to factor in the adult size of the fish when choosing the size of the aquarium. But if you got a small aquarium and later it became too small for your fish, then upgrade as soon as possible to the appropriate size.

Make sure that the fish you choose will be compatible with each other. Responsible fish keepers will not add different species to the same aquarium without first making sure that they will get along. Different fish have different requirements for pH, water temperature, and other measurements, too. Do not purchase too many fish for your tank, either. Just because they are small doesn't mean that several dozen of them can fit in your small aquarium.

If your fish or aquatic plants become too big for their aquarium, never release them in a pond, stream, or other wild environment. Unfortunately, many people do this when their fish grow much larger than they originally thought they would, and it can wreak havoc on the local ecosystem. If your fish survive, they may begin breeding and eventually kill off native species.

Many tropical species found in aquariums simply can't survive the temperatures outdoors, especially during winter, so setting them free outside is essentially a death sentence. Instead, upgrade their tank size or return your fish to the pet store.

Besides the aquarium itself, you'll also need a water filter and a heater. These are necessary for the vast majority of fish that you may want in your aquarium, and it would not be responsible to set up an aquarium without these. The filter type your aquarium requires depends on its size. The heater depends on the type of fish you plan to keep, since different species have varying temperature requirements.

Even with a filter, responsible fish keeping also includes regular water changes. Test the water weekly to track pH, nitrates, ammonia, and other water quality indicators. Some of the usual things that we add to aquariums, aside from the fish and water, are really necessary additions and not just for decoration. One example of those necessary items is the aquarium plant. Aquarium plants provide the necessary hiding spots for the fish to make them feel more comfortable.

There are two main choices for aquarium plants: real and fake. Keeping real plants alive requires specialized care, above and beyond keeping your fish alive. Plastic plants, on the other hand, are easy to care for, even if it's your first aquarium.

Plastic plants are long lasting and very easy to clean. You only need to take them out of the aquarium and wash with soap and water. The colors are varied and sometimes even more vivid than real plants. Although you have to be careful about the too bright colors or it might stress your fish. Some of them will adjust their colors to a less vibrant color in order to be less conspicuous to predators. Better stick to the more natural marine tones to bring out the natural bright colors of your fish.

If you want plants that are realistic but easy to care for, consider silk plants. They can be a little more expensive than plastic varieties, but are just as easy to care for. Always choose silk plants designed for aquariums, not those found in craft stores or labeled for reptile use, because those types have chemicals that could make your fish sick.

Fresh plants are of course, the most natural looking. Like some kinds of fish, though, they can be very hard to maintain. Some of them will thrive only under specific water temperatures or pH levels. Find the fresh plants whose specific needs are compatible with the water requirements of your fish.

Besides being more realistic, there are additional benefits to using real plants. Some fish will only breed in a planted tank. Fresh plants also help in the nitrogen cycle by using nitrates, and add oxygen to the water. Live plants are eaten by many fish varieties, and for these herbivores, fresh plants are the most natural food source.

Despite their benefits, fresh plants can be hard to care for. Many varieties require specialized fertilizers or lighting. No plants can grow in the dark; lights are necessary for photosynthesis, which happens in aquatic plants just like in your garden plants. Some aquarium plants require more lighting than others. Many require special aquarium-specific plant fertilizers. Never use your garden fertilizer on your aquarium plants, because doing so will likely kill your plants and your fish.

When it comes to cleaning, fresh plants are definitely the more difficult to clean. They cannot be uprooted so you have to clean them where they are planted. They also accumulate dead and decomposing parts at the bottom of your tank, which when not removed may be detrimental to the health of your fish. This can reduce the quality of the water and can become hazards to all living things in your aquarium. It is recommended that products that supply continuous source of beneficial bacteria, like EcoBio-Block, be on hand when you have fresh aquarium plants in your tank to help breakdown the organic waste into safer by-products. Aquarium canister filters are needed in order to maintain the balance and cleanliness of the aquarium. This type of canister filters may be used for either a freshwater or saltwater aquarium. Depending on the type of canister filter, it may contain media that may filter the water through mechanical, chemical, or biological means.

The canister filters and the hang-on type of filters are comparable in the way they look and perform their functions. However, one of their major differences is that the canister filter may be placed in different locations in the aquarium. Aside from hanging the canister filter, it may also be placed below the aquarium, which will allow you to improve the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium. It may also be placed inside the aquarium. This type of water filter is also referred to as ?submersible filter.? Because of the improved filtration mechanisms of the canister filter, this is usually recommended for those aquariums that have messy eaters that tend to produce a lot of waste.

One of the best advantages of having a canister filter is that it has a larger capacity compared with other filters. Despite the large capacity, it is more compact so you can hide it from view, if you would like to. On the other hand, one of the disadvantages of using canister filters is that they have to be frequently cleaned. This is because the filtration relies on mechanical means. The filtration device will be easily clogged up by the filtered wastes and these have to be removed as soon as possible to prevent the decaying matter to come back into the water.

For this filter, the water is pumped at regular speeds into the filter. The filter usually performs its task using mechanical filters, such as a micron filter cartridge or glass wool. After the mechanical filtration stage, the water is then allowed to pass through different layers of media, including carbon and other absorbents. This will trap the odor, chlorine, ammonia, and other unnecessary chemicals that are in the water.

The canister filter has three types of filtration device. First, the water is allowed to pass the mechanical filter, which usually has the glass wool or the micron filter cartridge. This will filter the solid wastes in the water. Next, the water is subjected to chemical filtration by allowing it to pass through a layer of carbon. This will absorb the odor and chemicals such as ammonia and chlorine from the water. Biological filtration is the last step. Here, a mixture of bacteria is allowed to act on the nitrites that are in the water. These toxic chemicals are converted into nitrates, which are less toxic.

Owning an aquarium can be a joy, but cleaning it often seems like a lot of work. It doesn't have to be that way. Here are some tips and products that can make cleaning and maintaining your fish tank a breeze.

It's typically recommended that you start by replacing 15-20 percent of the water every two weeks. While there are a number of ways you can do this, one of the easier methods is to use a plastic gravel cleaner with a hose attached. While cleaning your gravel, you can suck up the water you want to replace and drain it into a bucket.

The Aquarium's Shape

Introducing new fish to an already existing aquarium is not as easy as it may seem. There are a lot of things to think about and prepare before you can safely transfer your new fish to your aquarium. You cannot just buy any aquarium fish you want then dump them in the tank as soon as you reach home.

First thing to check is the quality of your water. It is stressful enough for all the fish involved when new fish are introduced to their number. Do not add to it by making them suffer in poor water quality. The stress in them might reach fatal levels. Make sure that you have the highest possible water quality by testing for the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Do the necessary changes or cleaning before you add the new fish to the aquarium. If you dont like frequent aquarium cleaning, add an EcoBio-Block to your aquarium to give it the beneficial bacteria and trace minerals that can reduce harmful substances in your water and keep it clean, healthy and clear.

When adding new fish to your aquarium set up, choose the kinds that are compatible with the fish that are already in your aquarium. Choose those that will peacefully and comfortably co-exist with your present fish. You dont want them hurting or eating or killing any of your old fish and vice versa. It will be wiser to introduce more than one fish to your aquarium to minimize the chances of the new fish being picked on by the old fish. Also choose those that will thrive in the same water environment that you have in your tank. There are specific pH and water temperature levels that have to be considered when introducing new fish to any water.

One way to avoid conflict among the fish is to rearrange the tank before putting in the new fish. Your old fish are likely to have established regular hiding spots, which they can get territorial with, if a new fish is introduced. Rearrange your plants and other accessories as part of your preparation for that new fish. Give them as many hiding spots as possible to help them steer clear of each other while getting used to the new set up.

One important rule in introducing a new aquarium fish to an established tank is to first acclimatize the fish to its new environment before releasing them into the water. If you dont do this, the shock to their system will surely kill them. The thing to do is immerse the bag of water containing your new aquarium fish, into your aquarium water. Let it stay there until the temperatures are equal and the fish have had the chance to look over their new environment. When a few hours have passed, release the fish slowly into the aquarium.

Ideally, a new tank can be set up for the new fish. This is so you could isolate them first and check them for diseases they may have. You wouldnt want any carry-over sickness to contaminate your aquarium.

Careful preparation to the aquarium, timing of the introduction of new fish, plus proper acclimatizing will ensure a smooth transition with minimal stress to all your aquarium fish.

Selecting the proper aquarium tank size and type, and making sure that it is ready for fish before adding them, can ensure that your fish will live a long and happy life in your aquarium.

Different fish have different requirements when it comes to the condition of the water that they will do best in. Tap water tends to be the best type of water for your freshwater fish tanks, but it does need some treatment before it can be used. Chlorine is not good for fish, so you need to remove the chlorine from the water before adding it to your tank. You can also leave tap water sitting out for 24 hours to get rid of chlorine, though this will not correct any other imbalances.

In the beginning, cats simply hunted mice, but eventually they were respected and cherished by the Egyptians. To ward off malicious spirits and poor fortune, figurines of cats were located near the entrance to many Egyptian houses. Bastet was an Egyptian goddess who offered protection to kids and felines. The Egyptian people were sure to guard their treasured and cherished cats, but cats also had the backing of the Egyptian legal system since if a cat was injured, the perpetrator could be killed. Cats could not be taken out of Egypt and it appears that groups of hunters would be unleashed to return the cats to their rightful place.

Having fish or reptiles as pets was something that occurred years ago, as well. There is evidence that suggests that during the years 220 to 390, people in the Chun dynasty had goldfish as pets. Buddhist monasteries, royal houses, or individuals who had high rankings in society were usually the ones who owned and bred Goldfish. But, during the Ming Dynasty, it was very common to have a goldfish in almost any home, kept in glass bowls or other containers. Having a goldfish as a pet became very popular, and in the 15th century, the "Golden carps" were seen in Europe and Japan. It was said that if you had a goldfish in your house, you would have prosperity and luck. People also loved to watch how they moved, which made them feel more relaxed and at peace.

Koi are cold-water fish, but benefit from being kept in the 15-25 degrees C (59-77 degrees F) range and do not react well to lengthy cold winter temperatures, their immune system 'turning off' under 10 degrees Celsius.

Koi ponds commonly have a meter or more of depth in areas of the planet that become warm throughout the summer, while in areas that produce harsher winters, ponds usually have a minimum of 1.5 meters (4 1/2 feet).Like most fish, koi produce young through spawning in which a female lays a vast quantity of eggs and one or more males fertilize them. Nurturing the ensuing offspring (referred to as "fry") is a tricky and tiresome job, generally done only by professionals. Although a koi breeder may carefully opt for the parents they desire based on their desired characteristics, the resulting fry will nonetheless exhibit a broad range of color and quality.

Koi will churn out thousands of offspring from a single spawning. However, unlike cattle, purebred dogs, or more relevantly, goldfish, the large majority these offspring, even from the finest champion-grade koi, will not be acceptable as nishikigoi (they have no appealing colors) or could even be genetically defective. These unacceptable offspring are culled at various stages of development based on the breeder's expertise and closely guarded trade techniques. So how can I choose my first tropical fish or should I need to change my fish tank population? There are many families of tropical fish, cichlids, Chaetodontidae, bottom feeders, Characins, Acanthuridae, labyrinth fish, livebearers and much more. Make sure that your desired animal fits to your aquarium size and choose one. Betta splendens is a good choice; it is very hardy and tolerates species.

In nature, Betta splendens males have shorter fins that those we usually see in pet shops, these are called by the Thai "Plakad" (meaning- "Fighter"), and are used in Thailand for show-fights (just like roosters). The Betta splendens is hardy species and can thrive in low water conditions, though; long-finned strains are more susceptible to high amounts of nitrogen compounds in water and will quickly suffer from fin-rot, dropsy and other diseases. In large tanks these fish need excellent filtration system with low to moderate water flow. If water flow is too strong or direct, the fish will settle in a spot where flow is lowest and will hardly move from it so it should be take care of. When kept in a jar, water should be changed every week- the amount of water changed, depends on the jar's volume the recommendation are 10 %. Some people buy dry leafs of a tree called Ketapang/Indian Almond-tree (Terminalia katappa) and insert them to the fish's jar. It is said to help preventing infectious diseases and getting the fish into breeding-mood. When feeding the betta fish, avoid over-feeding, as these fish tend to gorge itself, which might end up in a bloated fish suffering from deadly incurable Enlarged-leaver.

Another common tropical fish is the Labidochromis caeruleus also known as the yellow lab. The lemon cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus) is one of the most astonishing Mbuna that exist in the trade, its yellow and black colors along with the fact that it is one of the least aggressive cichlids makes it very popular all over the world. The Labidochromis caeruleus needs at least 20 gallon aquarium.

The Labidochromis caeruleus should kept in large community aquarium with other small Mbuna type fish like the species from the Labeotropheus Melanochromis. Decorate the tank with rocks, woods and other hiding places. These fish prefer hard alkaline water with a fairly high PH. The yellow lab will appreciate water changes on a weekly basis and well filtered water. The yellow lab is an omnivore, in captivity they will accept any food given, flakes, pellet, frozen or live food, they also need green food such as lettuce, cucumber.

The last one but one of my favorites, belongs to the livebearers family, the well known Guppy fish. The guppy is an elongated tropical fish that available in many different colors. The guppy is one of the most popular aquarium fishes all over the world with many standardized varieties. This species offers a large selection of colors with no two fish look alike. It is a small member of the Poeciliidae family (and like all other members of the family, he is livebearer). The most notable characteristic of this group is the presence of a copula-tory organ in males the andropodium or gonopodium, this organ is formed by the anterior rays of the anal fin. It is very easy to distinguish between male and females, Females are dull grey while the males are very colorful and have large fins.

There is nothing special to setup if you want to breed this amazing fish, the only thing you should do is to keep a ratio of one male and three females, the reason you need to bring more than one female for the male not harass the females to the point of exhaustion. Like all livebearers when the female is in pregnant it will develop a dark triangular shaped gravid spot near her anal vent. As the pregnancy advances the gravid spot will get bigger and darker. At the time the fry comes out it is recommended to move them or the parents to another fish tank or else the parents will eat their own fry. These fry can be fed with crushed commercial foods.

Do you like brightly colored fish in your aquarium? Then, chances are that you would like to have betta fish because they have bright and beautiful colors and you can choose from a wide range, including green, blue, turquoise, yellow, orange, and red. However, you might have to buy separate betta fish tanks and supplies because it is hard to keep this tropical fish in the same aquarium with other fishes due to its aggressive tendencies.

First of all, you cannot use decorative vases as betta fish tanks because the space available for the fish is too small. You might see this kind of display in some of the pet shops that you visit in which a water lily is often placed on the top of the vase. Many people have the misconception that because betta fish can survive in tight spaces like in the rice paddies of Cambodia and Thailand where they came from, they can be made to live in confined spaces like a vase.

The betta fish can live in tight places but this does not mean that your fish tank has to be small. It requires some room to swim and you are able to prevent it from damaging its scales or fins by providing the right amount of space. A volume of approximately two gallons of water is often recommended for betta fish tanks.

The betta fish has the advantage of not requiring as much dissolved oxygen in the water compared to other tropical fish but it still needs oxygen-rich and clean water. Therefore, it would be advisable to employ a filtration system to prevent contamination by bacteria, ammonia, decaying plants, and other harmful substances. Many filtration systems also create some kind of aeration and this could be adequate for the two-gallon tanks.

Luckily, you can save some money by not having to buy a separate aeration system because the filtration device can also provide this. It can cause bubbles on the water surface and this is enough for the purpose of introducing more oxygen into the water.

There are many kinds of available food for betta fish and you can buy them in the form of flakes or pellets for your convenience. You can also purchase those that have been frozen or freeze dried but sometimes, it would also be advisable to buy some brine shrimp, glass worms, and blood worms to satisfy the betta fish's carnivorous appetite.

For medicine, you will have to search for a local expert who can recommend the proper medications for you to buy. Ask him or her for some tips on how to determine if your betta fish has some health problems because this may be evident through its physical appearance and behavior. Sometimes it may choose to remain in hiding, it may refuse to eat, or its color may change.

With regards to ornaments, you can really have some fun with this because the betta fish is colorful and you can play with various combinations of decorations that are also colorful. While gravel is not really needed, you can add an inch-thick layer of gravel to provide some interesting contours. Just remember to avoid putting in those that have sharp edges because these can injure your betta fish.

Having a Koi pond heater used to be something you only found on very elaborate and large Koi ponds. Because of the expense, very few Koi owners could handle the cost. Also Koi ponds were mainly found only in the warmer climates where heating wasn't thought about. Today Koi are being exported all over the world where heating can be much more a requirement. Most importantly the cost of heating a Koi pond is much less than it was just a few years ago.

When we speak of heating we're not talking about just keeping the Koi pond free of ice in the coldest months. Heating a pond reduces dangerous water temperature fluctuations for your Koi. I would recommend you consider heating your Koi pond to keep it between 54 - 57F.

Since the Koi being imported today into colder climates are not use to the colder water temperatures, heating your pond will help protect your investment by providing a better water environment for your Koi.

There are two common ways to heat a Koi pond. The simplest way is to insert an in-line electric heater. The heater is inserted in the return line after the pump in a gravity-fed system. Figure on using about one kilowatt of electrical power per 1,000 gal. of water. Power requirements will vary depending on the ambient temperature of the water. I always suggest getting a heater a little larger than required so it won't run all the time during the coldest period.

The other alternative is the heat exchanger. These are more expensive to put in but make up for it in operating costs savings. The heat exchanger is basically a radiator that that pond water is pumped through to warm. The radiator is fired by gas, oil, or electricity.

The Koi pond heater is fast becoming a very popular option for ponds. In fact, some would argue that it is no longer just an option but rather a necessity especially in the colder climates. Whether or not you decide to heat your Koi pond, you should cover it in the colder months. Just don't make the cover air tight. You want gases that build up to be able to escape and you want access to the fish if you need it. The best covers have built in zipper openings just for that.
