Choosing South American Cichlid tank mates is not difficult at all. There are a few things that you need to consider before you make any quick decisions while at your favorite pet store.

The first thing that you must consider is the size of your cichlid species. Obviously, don't choose fish or invertebrates that appear to be able to fit in their mouth. It is not fool proof, but it makes for a good rule of thumb.

Next, don't pick a tankmate that has the potential to be more aggressive than the dominant species in your cichlid tank. Take this for example. Angel fish and Oscar fish will make great tankmates when they are small. But as they start to get bigger, the Oscars will beat up the docile Angels.

Those are a few obvious points about choosing tankmates for your cichlids, but lets get to the issue of this article. So what are the best tankmates for cichlids. Catfish, that's right, Catfish. But lets get a little bit more specific. What about Corydoras. These little guys are some of my favorite tropical fish, and they make great tankmates for all sorts of cichlids.

When choosing corys , make sure you consider the size of your Cichlids. If you have a mature Oscar tank, choosing the smaller types of corys is bad idea. Your Oscars will love the snack and vacuum them up like skittles. Choose one of the larger varieties like Corydoras aeneus.

The larger types of corys like the bronze and green varieties, will reach full size at about three inches. So they should make good tankmates for even the larger types of American Cichlids.

Here is a very important thing that you must consider if you choose corydoras as tankmates for Oscars. Sometimes they simply don't follow the rules and do as they please. For the best results with pairing Oscars and corys, it is best to raise them together so they are used to having each other around. Here is a cory tip. Keep your corys in groups of at least six or seven. They are much happier in a group.

Freshwater angelfish Of all the fish in a freshwater aquarium, angelfish usually standout as one of the most unique and beautiful of all the freshwater tropical fish..

Their unique body shape, as well as their stately appearance and unique coloring, make them one of the most heralded of all fish.

Angelfish, which actually get their name from the unrelated marine angelfish, come from the Amazon Region and its surrounding water basins. Angelfish are from the cichlid family. Cichlids are general known as an species of fish. Angelfish, however, are generally to overly aggressive but can be territorial during spawning, as are most fish for that matter.

Although angelfish are cichlids, their body configuration, specifically the elongated vertical body and triangular shaped fins, differ significantly from the standard cichlid shape most are used to seeing. The angelfish body shape works very well when considering the environment the native angelfish lives in. It is almost like and underwater jungle which lots of vertical plant life. The body shape is camouflaged well in this environment. Angelfish are omnivores and do eat live food in the wild. They are ambush hunters in their natural environment and prey on smaller fish and micro-invertebrates.

General Angelfish Care Coming from an region close to the equator, Angelfish flourish in a warm water ecosystem. Thus aquarium water temperature ought to be about 80 degrees. In addition, given that they are omnivores, they do best when fed a combination of frozen, live, and flake food. Angelfish will continue to eat all the food given to them, so the fish hobbyist must be careful not to overfeed. This can result in a buildup of excess fat (they became fat fish). Fat fish will become lethargic and generally do not live as long as healthy fish. Well cared for angelfish can live up to 12 or more years. Angelfish, again since they are from the Amazon basin, will thrive best if kept in a slightly acidic water, with a pH below 7.0.

Although angelfish are generally more peaceful than their aggressive cousins, they are still cichlids, and they will attack smaller fish if given the opportunity.

Today most domestic angelfish are perfectly suited to fish tank life. As a result it is a lot easier to induce angelfish to reproduce then it used to be. Keeping the fry thriving however, can be a little trickier.

It does no good to have successfully gotten your angelfish to reproduce if you can't successfully raise the fry. You set up the precise environment as far as water, filtering, lighting and food so that as soon as your fry hatch they have the greatest opportunity for survival.

Initially your angelfish will most likely be respectable parents and deal with the early rearing of the fry. It takes roughly three days after the fry emerge for them to completely absorb the yolk sac. After approximately three days the fry should absorb an adequate amount of the yolk sacs and they can become free swimmers. At this point you need to separate them from the mother.

For the duration of this time you ought to be making 50% water changes on a daily basis. The water which was as soon as blue with methyl blue, should be fairly clear by approximately the 5th day, which is when the fry should become free swimming. Any white eggs should be siphoned out of the aquarium at this point as they are unfertilized and will not hatch. If left in the tank they can produce unwelcome bacterial growth. Continue the 50% daily water changes to keep the water uncontaminated and diminish bacterial growth.

The common consensus among nearly all experts is that live baby brine shrimp is the best food source for your angelfish fry for the fist couple of weeks. Feeding times ought to be between 4 and 12 times a day. It's important when feeding your fry to feed moderate amounts. Angelfish generally have insatiable appetites and can easily overeat during feedings. Your fry should be full but not overstuffed in appearance.

By the 8th day you ought to still be carrying out 50% water changes, and feeding free swimmers more of the brine shrimp nauplii. It will be time to transfer them to a grow out aquarium. They have no resemblance to Angel fish at this phase.

After a couple of weeks. if everything has gone right up to this point, you may have too many for your aquarium. Also some have grown larger than others and possibly will need to be separated. At this point, you must decide whether it's time to seek out a potential buyer for your growing angelfish collection.

Altum, which is the Latin word for tall, appropriately describes the Altum angelfish. The tallest of the freshwater angelfish, it can attain a height of 12" and a length of 6". The Altum is a species of Pterophyllum that originates from the waters of the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela. More explicitly, they are found in the Amazon waterway basin where the upper Negro River drains, and from the Orinico river basin.

Altum angelfish are silvery colored with tan vertical stripes. This striped patterned helps them hide among the vertical plant life native to the region. The mouth of the Altum looks as though it is pointed. The forehead of the Altum is steeply sloped and the body is taller. Four dark, cross ways bands cover the body, and one or two faint bands are also present. The first dark band runs through the eye; the second runs near the mid-section of the body, while the third runs from the tip of the dorsal fin, through the body, and to the tip of the anal fin. The final band runs on the caudal penuncle.

Being a such a big angelfish, they need a larger and higher tank. Aquariums should be a minimum of 30" tall and 4 ft long. The aquarium ought to be decorated with sizable pieces of bogwood that if possible should reach the waters surface. Sizable leafed plants like Amazon swordsplants can also be beneficial and are typically left alone.

Low nitrate levels and slowly filtered water are also important to keeping Altums healthy. These circumstances carefully correspond with their native natural environment. Water quality is a fundamental component to effectively raising Altum angelfish since most are captured in the in their natural habitat.

Unlike the common angelfish, the Scalare, Altums can be tough to keep and successfully raise in captivity. This is due largely to the fact that practically all Altum sold are wild caught, not domestically farmed. Because of this they can more difficult to get and not a lot of folks try and keep them.

Since they are wild caught fish, Altums can be challenging to come across at times. And one must be cautious of phony Altums being sold. They can be challenging to tell apart from Scalares if not properly trained.

Although Altums are calm, they can also be extremely defensive. As a result, Altums are not the greatest of community fish. They can be successfully kept with a good number serene fish, and are ideally kept with other calm type from the similar area such as Discus and Tetras. Also keep in mind that no matter how peaceful Altum appear to be, they will eat smaller fish if given the occasion. Smaller tetras such as cardinals and neons would most likely turn out to be expensive fish food.

Altums have an incredibly insatiable appetite. They like eating live foods. As most are caught from the wild, they will prefer to eat live food. However, you will be able to feed them food such as frozen brine shrimp, granular fish food, and live and frozen blood worms.

Despite providing great water conditions and a good diet, Altum angelfish can be difficult to raise and even more challenging to breed. Determining the sex can also be exceptionally tricky, as it is with nearly all of the angelfish species.

Glofish do not exist in nature. They were created in a laboratory. No, you are not seeing things. You may not read about it on the front page of USA Today. You may not hear about it on a television commercial break that ends with the words, "film at 11." BUT... whether you realize it or not there have been over 660 patents issued on biogenetically engineered animals in the USA alone. And that number is growing every year. Transgenic animals are being patented like the never before seen, latest feature on a microwave oven or the next generation of digital music player. The difference is that here we are talking about living, breathing organisms rather than motherboards and microchips.

The Golfish just turned 10 years old. Happy birthbay! Just a decade ago there was no such thing as a Glofish. What exactly would be the purpose for making a fish glow? Good question, especially if you stop to consider how much easier they would for a potential predator to find and decide they might make a tasty snack. But the goal was not to create a fish that screamed out, "Here I am. Come eat me." Nor was it to create an entirely new species for the thriving global ornamental fish industry. In fact, monetary gain did not come into play at all when in 1999 when Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and his team of bioengineers at NSU (the National University of Singapore) decide to genetically modify a preexisting freshwater species of fish to make it glow. So if eradicating a nuisance species by making it more easily detectable, or accumulating a vast fortune by creating a "must have" novelty item for the hungry fish hobbyist market was not the objective, then what was? As incredulous as it may sound, the objective was to create a fish that would selectively luminescence when it came into contact with environmental contaminants. Hmmm... a fish that fights pollution by tracking industrial ecological offenders to their source, we might be on to something here! Do you think it was a sheer coincidence that the first Glofish ever created was GREEN?

So exactly what is involved in creating a species that is biologically designed to help save the planet? The logical first step is to engineer a fish that glows to begin with. Once you have a fish that glows then you can set about tackling the issue of selective bioluminescence.

These are the obstacles Dr. Zhiyuan Gong and his colleagues decided to overcome in 1999. The first step was to select a fish. The geneticists chose the Brachydanio reri a rather small fish in the minnow family native to India. This species is more commonly known as a zebra danio or zebrafish because of it distinctive horizontal stripping. Zebrafish are raised on fish farms in Singapore for export so their eggs were readily available.

With the selection process complete it was now time to initiate phase one of the process of creating the world's fist aquatic toxic avenger. The genetics team integrated a bioluminescent gene found in crystal jellyfish known as GFP (Green Flourescent Protein) into a fertilized zebrafish egg and allowed it to gestate. The introduction of this gene into the embryo's genome produced fluorescent green zebrafish. Experimentation with a variation of GFP resulted in yellow fluorescing fish. RFP (Red Flourescent Protein) found in certain species of sea coral added yet another twist in the spectrum of what was soon to be called Glofish.

The creation of the world's first florescent fish was bound to draw some attention. It did not take long for news of NUS's success to reach the desks of entrepreneurs Alan Blake and Richard Crockett. They wasted no time in sewing up exclusive worldwide rights for the sell of Glofish. Yorktown Technologies of Austin, Texas then went to work commercially raising Glofish for the thriving aquarium trade industry. Fortunately for Blake and Crockett, fish farms for the production of zebra danios had been in existence in the southern parts of United States since as early as the 30s. It was not much of a leap to raise a species that is only a single gene removed.

Glofish were slated to hit the market in late 2003. The question now becomes how should both national and regional governmental agencies react to the idea of a genetically engineered organism being unleashed on the general public? The European Union outright banned the sell of all genetically modified organisms within its member countries. The distribution or possession of Glofish is also prohibited in Canada, Australia, and Japan. Glofish are legal in 49 states in the U.S. The State of California issued the Environmental Quality Act to halt the sell of GloFish before they were even available to the public. Who would have thought something as benign as an ornamental aquarium fish would create such a stir? Ironically, fluorescing quickly became top sellers within the aquarium trade in most of Asia and in the U.S.

There is far more to consider here than just the subject of genetic manipulation. Environmentalists have longed cautioned on the unforeseen and possibly devastating consequences of introducing an unknown factor into an established ecosystem. The sell of piranha is illegal in most of the United States and much of the world for fear that one of the most predacious species in existence will suddenly and irreversibly establish itself as the number one predator at the top of the food chain. Common sense dictates that this is perhaps the most extreme example one could come up with. While this is true, there are a number of instances relating to a new species being introduced into previously uninhabited aquatic eco-system. The southern platyfish of Central America has established feral populations in Florida, Montana, Columbia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Hong Kong ecologists have indicated that the introduction of this species inflicted serious damage on its freshwater ecosystems. The sword tail, another popular aquarium fish native to both North and South America, has reproduced at such an alarming rate that its presence is threatening the indigenous freshwater species of both Africa and Australia. Both of these species introductions into previously uninhabited waters are aquarium trade related. Fish are not like an item in your local supermarket. Once they have made their way into the wild they can't be subject to a product recall and quickly pulled off the shelf.

Do Glofish pose a threat? The end of World War II marked beginning of an explosion in the aquarium trade industry. There is only a single gene separating Glofish from their natural counterpart, zebra danio. Over 200 million of these fish have been imported and sold in the U.S. alone over the past half century. Zebrafish are incapable of surviving the temperate water conditions in all but the most southern states. To date, there has not been a single report of an established reproducing population in the wild anywhere in the United States.

A lot has happened since Glofish first hit the market in 2003. In the name of progress scientists have created fluorescing pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats. I'm not sure how I would react if I suddenly realized that my daughter's cat just gave birth to a litter of kittens that glowed under a black light. Although I'm willing to be that she would think it was the coolest thing since Sponge Bob Square Pants. Fish, on the other hand, can not impregnate an entire neighborhood if left to prowl freely. If the zebra danio was adaptable enough to become one of the ever growing number of nuisance species as a result of their global exportation they would already be on the list. While the sale of a genetically altered fish simply because they look prettier than their "natural" counterparts may be ethically questionable, they are strikingly beautiful fish. It almost begs the question, "How many times have you upgraded a cell phone in perfect working order simply because the new model cooler, was more compact, or everyone in the office had a newer model than yours?

Glofish are ideal for smaller aquariums. They would look fantastic in a desktop nano fish tank. If you found this article interesting, discover more reliable information about the most popular freshwater aquarium fish by going to our Online fish guide.

There are a few things to consider when you are buying tropical fish tanks. First you have to decide if you want saltwater or freshwater fish. Saltwater fish are a little harder to care for and require more to set up the tank. For this reason, freshwater tropical fish are usually recommended for beginners. Saltwater tanks can take weeks to get ready for fish while a freshwater tank can be fish ready within 24 hours.

Another main concern when buying tropical fish tanks is location. Location is almost as important as deciding the type of fish. There are a lot of rules when it comes to placing an aquarium. For example: Aquariums can't be placed in direct sunlight because that can overheat the water and kill your fish. The tank can't be placed somewhere that has extreme temperature changes, such as in a unfinished basement or unheated garage.

The perfect location would be somewhere out of the immediate walkway, with a level floor and easy access to an electrical outlet. It also needs to be accessible to you for cleaning and redecorating purposes. The reason you want tropical fish tanks in a slightly out of the way area is because of their size. Even a 20 gallon tank can be quite heavy when filled with water, gravel, plants and fish. Being on a level floor helps keep the weight of the water from putting stress on some seals more than others, preventing leaks. Tropical tanks need an electrical outlet mainly for their heater, but most tanks come with a lighted cover that also needs to be plugged in.

Once you have all the information you can get from your house, its time to go to the store and actually pick your tank. There are a few things to keep in mind when picking out tropical fish tanks at the store too. Your main concerns at the store will be shape, size and material of the aquarium.

First the shape. The longer and wider a tank is the larger the surface area of water, which is how oxygen gets into the water for your fish to breath. The size of your aquarium matters too. The larger a tank is, the easier to care for the fish but keep in mind where you want to put it when you get home. Finally material of the aquarium. Most aquariums are made out of glass or acrylic. Glass is easier to care for and therefore recommended for beginners.

Tropical home aquariums are beautiful and fun to own. These are basic tips for setting up tropical fish tanks in your home.

So you want to set up a fish tank, well the first thing that I will tell you is that you have to be patient and should not jump right into putting fish in your tank. In this article I will be explaining all of the steps to setting up a fish tank for tropical fish only.

When you are selecting an aquarium to buy you must know what kind of fish that are going to be living in it and how big the fish will get. As a simple rule, for every inch of fish that there is there should be 1 gallon of water.

The items that you will need to set up a fish tank are the aquarium, filter pump, heat pump. Optional items that you should get also are gravel, thermometer, lamp, decorations, and a back up filter pump in case the main one goes bad.

Now that you have all the items you need next is to set up the stand and put the tank on it. Make sure you choose a good spot that will not be blocking anything you will need to get to later on like receptacles, air vents, etc.

Now that your tank is positioned right it is time to leak test it. Do this by filling the tank up completely with water and let it sit for a day or two. Inspect the surrounding area for any signs of water, nothing is worse than a leaky aquarium, bad for your home and the fish. Once you are sure there are no leaks go ahead and empty the tank.

While you are leak testing your aquarium you can start filling up jugs of tap water. Mix the tap water with water conditioner as fish do not like plain tap water. I also add bacteria supplement to the water also. Make sure you follow the directions on the water conditioner bottle exactly.

Next you can start adding gravel, make sure that you rinse the gravel very good. Since the tank is still empty you can start putting in the gravel and decorations. It is very important to make sure that everything that you put into your fish tank is washed well, as it only takes a little bit of dish soap to kill fish.

Start setting up the filter pump and the heating pump. Add the water solution from the jugs that you already pre-mixed, fill the tank up to about an inch from the top. Put the overhead lamp on if you have one and turn on the heater and the filter pump, you now want to be patient and let the water cycle for a week at the minimum.

Let the fish tank cycle the water for at least one week. After that one week you can add a couple of fish to get the tanks ecosystem in action, but do not add anymore fish for at least 5 weeks. Be patient and your fish will be healthy and live for a long time.

When starting a fish tank, the hardest thing to decide may surprisingly be the type of fish to raise. Even though the funniest thing about owning a fish tank may be choosing the types of fish. Choosing fish can be a difficult and fun task, but if it is done incorrectly can cost a lot of money and time. There are many combinations of fish to chose from, but narrowing down these choices is fairly easy. To narrow down the choices, you need to decide the types of fish you would like to raise.

A common choice that people make is to raise fish for offspring. When fish have offspring, it can be a very fun part of raising fish. I would suggest a peaceful tank so that the fry will survive. Mollies and Guppies are good livebearers to start with and easily breed. They have many offspring, so the chances of some of the fry surviving are high. Adding some bottom feeders is also nice, I would suggest some Cory Cats and Plecostomus.

If you would like a community tank with a variety of fish and many colors, there are many possibilities. Barbs, Tetras, Angel Fish and Kribensis make for a nice community tank. These fish swim around the tank for an active tank. Loaches, Cory Cats and Plecostomus are good bottom feeders.

If you just like a certain type of fish, or would like interesting fish to own I would suggest Cichlids. African Cichlids are very fun fish to rise, but can be very difficult. Finding the right type of Cichlids can be difficult and the wrong kind can cause fighting. Only get the same species of Cichlids in a tank, and you will be fine. Cichlids are egg layers and very protective of their young.

There are some fish that can be very hard to raise no matter the circumstance. I have had experience with certain types of fish that are impossible to raise. Jack Dempsies eat other smaller fish and I would not suggest owning one to begin with. Chinese Algae Eaters are very good at eating algae, but have one problem, they suck the slime off other fish and can kill them.

If you are new to fish raising, I would suggest using a few of these combinations to start with, you can add more fish and experiment as your tank grows. I would not start out with aggressive fish, these fish can be very difficult to own even if you are experienced. Trying new combinations of fish is good, but after you add a new fish, watch the fish to for a while to make sure they fit in.

In your quest for the perfect fish tank you will come across many problems and have many difficulties. The biggest problem can be the fish, which are in the tank. The books can give you the types of fish that work well together. For the most part the books are right and will not mislead you; but something can go wrong and the books are not always correct. The only way to be sure of the fish to be correct is experience. Sometimes experimenting is good for the success of a fish tank.

For the most part it is suggested to go by the books and get fish that are compatible. As stated before the books are not always correct, so event if it is said that the fish will be fine together than they may not be. After new fish are added to your tank, keep close attention to the fish for a week or so. If everyone in the tank is happy than you can lessen your watch more and more as time recedes.

If you find a fish that is causing a problem you must first identify the problem. The fish may be attacking all the other fish or attacking a certain group of fish. The case may be that two of the fish are battling it out or one fish does not like a certain other fish. The fish may just be digging or very hyper. Whatever the problem is it can be fixed.

Solving this problem can be easy and done without having to kill the fish. Isolating the fish that has the problem in a different tank for a while is best. If the problems cease in your main tank then the fish cannot be with the other fish in the tank, and is best left alone or maybe only with its own kind.

If you have checked everything that you possibly can then it is time to take action. First, try removing the fish and all of its kind from the tank and put them in another tank alone. This should usually solve the problem within your main tank. If you find that the fish are still acting up, that you should see if they might be sick or breeding. Give the fish a week or so in the new tank if they are still acting up, the water or temperature may be the problem. Next, experiment with the decorations in the tank. Finally, if you still are pursuing the problem then the fish might have to be given to a different home.

The most common problem with fish that have a problem is that they dislike a different fish. If you find that this is the problem then try just giving the problem the fish away. This will avoid conflict and make life easier.

Cleaning your fish tank is task that must be done every few weeks or so until your tank is established. Once established, your tank will only need to be cleaned a few times a month. The size of your tank can depend on how long it takes to clean. The bigger the tank and more decor is the, the harder it will be to clean.

When cleaning a tank, changing the filters is the first step. If you have a bio filter, or power filter changing the filters is a breeze. A under gravel filter is another story. You must remove all the plants, decor and accessories. Then you must pull it out from under the gravel to clean.

Once the filters are cleaned, replace them with new ones. If you have an underground filter do not replace it back in the tank yet. If you have an established tank then leave the plants and decor, even if they have algae on them. If you do not have an established tank or smaller tank (ten gallon or smaller) then wash off all the plants and decor. If you have real plants do not wash them.

After the accessories, decor and plants have been washed do not place them back in the tank yet. The next step is to siphon the tank. Siphon no more than one third of the water out of the tank. If there is still debris at the bottom of the tank fill it with water and re siphon until all debris is gone. If you have an established tank then only siphon out some of the debris and leave a little in the gravel.

When replacing the water only use soft water so the fish do not die of shock. Soft water is water without minerals. Tap water or filtered water is considered soft water. After the water has been replaced remember to not fill the tank too high because, the plants, decor and filters have to still be added.

Replace the under gravel filter if you have one. Also consider in investing a power filter, this will make your life a lot easier. Then replace the plants and decor. You're all done, and now your tank is clean. Remember that cleaning a tank can be traumatizing for the fish, so they might be timid for a while after the clean.

The best part of owning an aquarium is decorating it however you want. Decorating an aquarium can be fun, but the decorations still have to be suitable for the fish. Fish feel more secure with more hiding places. If you have only a few decorations in the tank the fish will not feel secure and not swim around the tank as much. If you have lots of hiding places then you will not be able to see the fish very often. There is a balance that you must find for a happy, healthy tank.

First, when designing an aquarium the essentials are needed such as lights, filters and heaters. The tank first needs the filters, depending on your size of tank, depends on how many filters you have. A lid for your aquarium is vital for the fishes' health. A lid protects them from outside dangers, and also can provide light. A lid is highly suggested for an aquarium hobbyist.

If you do not have a lid on your aquarium, then I suggest investing in one. A lid provides more security for the fish so that things do not get into the tank. Also a lid helps regulate the temperature in the tank. Most lids have lights and, which are very beneficial. If you can, invest in a lid with a light, most aquarium tanks come with a standard lid with a fluorescent light.

Filters are very useful and needed to keep the tank clean. If you have a power or wheel filter, decorating can be a lot easier than if you have an under gravel filter. If you have a under gravel filter then I suggest investing in a power filter, they are inexpensive and get the job done.

Heaters are necessary for fish life, but can get in the way. Make sure to put them in a place out of the way of the fish. Submersible heaters work the best. Just to be safe put at least tow heaters in your tank so that if one stops working the fish will still have one heater to regulate the habitat.

Lights are a nice add-on for an aquarium, and make the fish feel more secure. The light can give the fish a difference between night and day, so that their feeding routines stay the same.

Bubblers are great for the tank to get oxygen for the fish, and also look cool. Place bubblers off to the side of the tank so that they do not disturb the fish that do not like the bubbles.

When it comes to decorating your tank keep these tips in mind do make a tank a good living environment for the fish. The accessories and decor for the fish tank are great but keep in mind to not forget about the essentials such as filters and heaters.

Aquarium canister filters are needed in order to maintain the balance and cleanliness of the aquarium. This type of canister filters may be used for either a freshwater or saltwater aquarium. Depending on the type of canister filter, it may contain media that may filter the water through mechanical, chemical, or biological means.

The canister filters and the hang-on type of filters are comparable in the way they look and perform their functions. However, one of their major differences is that the canister filter may be placed in different locations in the aquarium. Aside from hanging the canister filter, it may also be placed below the aquarium, which will allow you to improve the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium. It may also be placed inside the aquarium. This type of water filter is also referred to as ?submersible filter.? Because of the improved filtration mechanisms of the canister filter, this is usually recommended for those aquariums that have messy eaters that tend to produce a lot of waste.

One of the best advantages of having a canister filter is that it has a larger capacity compared with other filters. Despite the large capacity, it is more compact so you can hide it from view, if you would like to. On the other hand, one of the disadvantages of using canister filters is that they have to be frequently cleaned. This is because the filtration relies on mechanical means. The filtration device will be easily clogged up by the filtered wastes and these have to be removed as soon as possible to prevent the decaying matter to come back into the water.

For this filter, the water is pumped at regular speeds into the filter. The filter usually performs its task using mechanical filters, such as a micron filter cartridge or glass wool. After the mechanical filtration stage, the water is then allowed to pass through different layers of media, including carbon and other absorbents. This will trap the odor, chlorine, ammonia, and other unnecessary chemicals that are in the water.

The canister filter has three types of filtration device. First, the water is allowed to pass the mechanical filter, which usually has the glass wool or the micron filter cartridge. This will filter the solid wastes in the water. Next, the water is subjected to chemical filtration by allowing it to pass through a layer of carbon. This will absorb the odor and chemicals such as ammonia and chlorine from the water. Biological filtration is the last step. Here, a mixture of bacteria is allowed to act on the nitrites that are in the water. These toxic chemicals are converted into nitrates, which are less toxic.

Guide to proper choice of canister filters

1. Replacement parts are readily available

After some time of use, you will have to replace some of the parts of your aquarium filter. You have to do this as soon as you detect a problem in order to prevent leaks that might threaten the lives of the fish and other animals in your aquarium. It is best if the store where you will get the filter also offers the replacement parts. Get some spare rubber gaskets and impellers and store them near your aquarium.

2. Are these the right ones for your aquarium type?

While there are canister filters that will work for both freshwater and saltwater, there are some that are not recommended for saltwater. Inform the seller what type of aquarium you have before buying one.

3. Are these easy to use?

While you can get someone to install the canister filter for you, it should be easy enough for you to operate without any help from an expert. Also, you have to make sure that during emergencies, you will be able to manipulate the filters to prevent any danger on your pets. Many hobbyists prefer getting canister filters because they are inexpensive and have a variety of functions. With sufficient information on how to use them, your aquatic pets will have a better aquarium environment.

If you want to have healthy fish, you need to have the right type of water in your fish tank. Many people who are just beginning to set up a fish tank don't understand how important it is to test your water and treat it for any imbalances. You need to have the right water for your fish.

Different fish have different requirements when it comes to the condition of the water that they will do best in. It is always a good idea to test your water for the pH, gH, and kH levels and try to get fish that thrive in water similar to the water that you already have. This will mean less work for you when it comes to fish tank water treatment.

Tap water tends to be the best type of water for your freshwater fish tanks, but it does need some treatment before it can be used. Chlorine is not good for fish, so you need to remove the chlorine from the water before adding it to your tank. You can use a conditioner as a way to try to correct any imbalances in your water and add beneficial substances. This type of fish tank water treatment is common. It will get rid of the chlorine. You can also leave tap water sitting out for 24 hours to get rid of chlorine, though this will not correct any other imbalances.

If the pH of your water is not at the right level, or is not remaining stable, you might need to do a fish tank water treatment in order to correct this. Sometimes this can be as simple as mixing a small amount of spring water in with the tank water. Other times you will need to treat whatever is causing the pH fluctuation.

You also need to make sure that the kH, or concentration of carbonates and bicarbonates, in your water is at the proper level. These help to buffer the water so that the pH stays more constant, otherwise as time goes on it will get acidic. There are a number of different options you can use for fish tank water treatment if you have high or low kH levels, including various chemicals you can purchase at the store.

You gH is the general hardness of your water. Some fish prefer harder water and some prefer softer water. You can use peat moss to soften the water, or add rocks to help harden the water. The simplest thing to do is get fish that suit the water that you already have so you don't need to do too much treatment of your water.

Anybody that has had an aquarium understands that algae cannot be avoided and it is simply a thing that fish owners, whether salt or freshwater, need to deal with on a regular basis. There's four major types of algae - green, brown, red-brush, and blue green.

If you have a fish tank that receives plenty of light, the green algae will most probably be the type that will have to be dealt with. In this case, what fish owners see the most often is either the hair algae or the "green dot algae". The first one is simply long strings of algae, while the latter one is the green dots on the aquarium's side. The second type is also very hard to remove.

Brown algae appears very often in new aquariums within the first few days. If it can be seen in tanks that have been in use for a while already, it is necessary to check if the water contains enough phosphate and nitrate. Brown algae is usually likely to appear if not enough light reaches the aquarium. Cleaning the tank and assuring that it is lit well enough usually solves the problem.

Red-brush algae is a form of algae that loves aquariums that have a high PH, however it's incredibly difficult to manually remove red-brush algae from aquariums.

Blue-green algae is misleading because it's not exactly algae, it's really a cynobacteria. When it appears within an aquarium it looks like a slime that is commandeering your tank and can not only be detrimental to plants in the aquarium, but may endanger the health of your fish.

Among the easiest methods to reduce the volume of algae within the tank is to lower your lighting utilizing the smallest wattage you can. Keeping your aquarium lights on for less then nine hours a day will limit the amount of time algae has for photosynthesis.

Utilize distilled water as you clean the saltwater aquarium or swap out the water because altering your water every two to three weeks will limit the amount of time algae may thrive within the tank. As you swap out the water ensure you vacuum the rocks and keep utilization of additives as low as possible, changing the pre-filter pad every week. Stock the tank full of algae consuming fish. With saltwater aquariums that would be - Hard Star Fish, Yellow Tang Fish, Blennies, Turbo Snails, Angel Fish, and small Hermit Crabs.

Obtain the biggest, sturdiest glass cleansing algae magnet you're able to locate and then make use of it. If you utilize the magnet every single time that you cleanse the water in your aquarium the glass in the tank will probably remain algae free. For especially stubborn algae spots, you will have to use a razor blade, however do not fail to clean the runoff pipes. If you follow the advice found in this article, getting rid of fish tank algae will not be a problem for you ever again.

Setting up a fully functional aquarium does not merely require a fish tank and a stand. There are a few accessories you need to set up, and among the most important are fish tank heaters. Aquarium heaters help maintain the right temperature in the water, which is important if you want your fish and aquatic plants to thrive in an ideal environment.

Fish tanks need to be able to provide the right temperature for the right kind of fish, since not all fish types necessitate the same level of water temperature. During the winter months, your fish needs sufficient heating for optimum health. In their natural habitat, the water temperature typically varies from 18 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. Before buying any heater, make sure that it provides the kind of heating needed by your fish.

The size of your fish tank needs to be considered too, if you must buy a heater. Generally, a small fish tank would require a low-watt heater, such as one with only 25 watts of power. If you have a 75-gallon tank for example, you will require a more powerful heater, such as a 300-watt aquarium heater.

If you must put some aquatic plants in your fish tank, setting up the right heater is highly necessary. Fish tank heaters do not merely keep the fish alive especially during wintry months; they provide enough heat for the plants too. In line with this, both the fish and the plants should require the same temperature in order to thrive.

The fish cannot breed successfully in low water temperatures, so heating is always a requirement for fish tanks when breeding. Different fish species normally require various temperatures in order to breed effectively, but the normal temperature ranges from 25 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is below 20 degrees, the breeding success rate may not be as high as expected

You need to take note nonetheless that there are many other factors which contribute to the success rate of fish breeding. It is important that you monitor the pressure and current of the water too. The temperature of your tank is just one of the more crucial factors which you should keep an eye on. Using a thermometer will help you do this with ease.

Fish do not produce body heat by themselves, which is why they thrive best in an environment where there is adequate heating. Fish tank heaters are also necessary even during warmer seasons. The water temperature could vary between night and day, making it uncomfortable for your aquarium fish. Fish normally dont like being placed in fluctuating environments. A heater distributes an even temperature throughout the tank, so the fish can grow and breed in comfort.

Heaters can take some time before being able to fully warm the tank. Placing a lid on your fish tank allows for faster and more thorough heating. There are many types of heaters available in the market, so it is best to choose a top quality product. Placing the heater properly helps prevent any accidents or damage. Fish tank heaters play a crucial role in maintaining the health of your fish and aquarium plants, so it is always best to choose them with care.

Likewise, if you have a bigger tank, choose a heater that can accommodate its needs better.

You also need to take into account the water current and pressure, as well as the chemistry in the water. The best way to monitor the water temperature successfully is to use a thermometer on a regular basis.

Fish are unable to produce their own body heating, so your aquarium should have quality heating accessories. In fact, setting up aquarium heaters is also needed even for places with warmer climates. The temperature can vary between the day and night, and since most fish do not like fluctuations in temperature, it is best to choose the appropriate heating device.

Keeping a lid on your aquarium will allow it to heat fast, so if you want faster and more even heating, you can place a lid on the tank. The proper placement of the heater needs to be taken care of at all times, depending on the type of heater you have chosen. Whether you plan on installing an aquarium for hobby purposes or you want to get into fish breeding, choosing the right fish tank heaters should be one of your priorities.

If you have always planned on setting up an aquarium, you have to choose the necessary fish supplies carefully. There are various types of fish tank supplies available, all designed to cater to the needs of different fish species and different aquarium types. The web is home to some of the best retailers of supplies around -- from fish tank filters and pumps to aquarium decorations.

One of the more common aquarium filters is the under gravel filter. This type of filter has recently given way to power filters and canister filters; however, under gravel filters still have a range of advantages. They are easy to maintain and easy to set up and best of all they work as excellent bio filters.

An aquarium stand is important since it provides support to your aquarium. You have to get the stand perfect for your fish tank, whether it is made from glass or acrylic. Different types require various kinds of support, so you need to know this before setting out to buy one. Fish tank hoods are important too, since you would want to keep your fish in the tank and keep the water from evaporating.

Choosing the right type of fish food should always be a priority. This is one of the fish supplies you should not scrimp on. The four types of fish food include flakes, pellets or grains, frozen or freeze-dried food, and raw or live food. The type of fish you have in your tank can be surface feeders, bottom feeders, or mid feeders. Flakes for example, are perfect for bottom and surface feeders since flakes float for a while before settling on the tanks' bottom.

The ideal oxygen levels need to be maintained inside the fish tank, so you need to get the right water pump. You also need to get water filters and an aquarium hood for the fish tank. Water filters are necessary to keep impurities from settling inside the aquarium. As for the lighting, many aquarium hoods also provide incandescent or fluorescent illumination for the fish tank.

These fish tank filters work in a biological, chemical, and mechanical manner. Filters provide a breeding ground for good bacteria, so the ammonia that comes from fish waste is broken down into less dangerous nitrites and nitrates. Also, filters are designed to remove debris from the water, as well as harmful metal traces.

When choosing aquarium filters, you need to examine your tank, the types of fish you have in the aquarium, and even your budget. Under gravel filters are the cheapest, so if you have a small tank and an equally small budget, these types of filters will suffice.

Fish tank water filters clean the water inside the aquarium and they also provide aeration to the water and the fish tank. Filters are also crucial in controlling ammonia levels in the water. To ensure the health of your fishes and the best conditions of your aquarium, it is crucial that you choose the right filters.

Testing of water in a fresh water aquarium involves two steps, the first is when you first start an aquarium and the second stage is when the tank has already been established and you have fish in them.

Fish thrive or die, depending on the water quality, so it is imperative for their health that you understand the sort of conditions and the quality of water that your fish need to live healthily. This is not uniform for all fishes, so a bit of study is necessary.

Procedure for a new fish tank:

You first need to establish that the nitrogen cycle has taken place. This is important because after this cycle has occurred it is safe to add fish. Fish waste and undigested food lead to an ammonia spike. This is the first stage of the nitrogen cycle and you can detect this by an Ammonia test. After this friendly bacteria called Nirosomonas start to breed, causing a nitrate spike. This is the second stage of the nitrogen cycle.

The third stage occurs when nitrospira bacteria breed converting the dangerous nitrite into less harmful nitrates. Once this occurs it is safe to add fish. Add the fish gradually, testing the water every couple of days, partially changing the water if there is too much ammonia or nitrite in it. This cycle takes place over a few weeks so it is important to keep testing the water so that you know which stage of the cycle you are on.

There are three test kits that are a must for any fish tank owner, to monitor the nitrogen cycle, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate testing kits. You also need a pH testing kit to check the water for acidity. This is important because if there is too much of a difference in the acidity level of the tank they lived in before you bought them, they may die of stress or shock.

Once your tank is established you do not need to keep on testing all the time. However, you still need to check the water for nitrates. Even though nitrates are not as harmful as the nitrites and ammonia, too much nitrate can also be detrimental to the health of your fish. To avoid any kind of problems, make it your habit to check the water quality and carry out regular water changes so that your fish are healthy and active. You can control the nitrate build up by adding plants and nitrate eating fish to your tank and monitoring the quality of water.

Have you ever thought of owning freshwater fish? Before you go out buying freshwater fish, you will need a freshwater fish aquarium set up. You do not want to just buy any freshwater fish aquarium either. There are many factors you must consider.

You need to do some research before you buy a freshwater fish aquarium. For example, you need to know the right size aquarium, what to put in your aquarium, and how to clean your aquarium.

The first step in buying a freshwater fish aquarium is to figure out the right size of the aquarium. Not only do you need to consider how much swimming area your freshwater fish will need, but you also have to consider how much space in your house is available for installing an aquarium. Do not just estimate the amount of space you need. Get a ruler and measure the exact space needed.

Figure out what you will put in your freshwater fish aquarium. Put some plants and other small figures for eye appeal. Make sure the fish you buy will not eat the plants.

Research into the type of fish you want to put in your freshwater fish aquarium. You have to be very careful and not put predator and prey fish in the same tank. It would be a great waste of money if your fish ate all the other fish.

You should also research on how to clean your freshwater fish aquarium. Algae can grow in your aquarium and you have to have a method for getting rid of that. You could put algae eating fish in your freshwater fish aquarium to take care of the issue. You can also use a filter.

Another way you can clean the tank is by putting in plants. Not only will the plants help make the freshwater fish aquarium look good, but it will clear out the nitrates in the tank.

Setting up a freshwater fish aquarium is not simple task. If you do your research you should be able to set one up easily though.

Betta fish are a perfect start for anyone who wishes to own tropical fish. They are beautiful and taking care of them is far from difficult. Another great thing about the Betta Splendens is that they do not require too much space, which means you won't need to buy a large tank, at least in the beginning.

To ensure the well being of your betta the water's temperature should be kept at the level of about eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Specific betta fish food will also have to be provided. The food usually comes as pellets or flakes, and may also contain special additives meant to improve the color of the fish.

You will probably have to change the water in the tank approximately once a week, though with a filter installed that period may be a bit longer. As betta fish do not require large tanks, the process of replacing water does not take too long most of the time.

A great many people believe that betta fish cannot be retained with other fish or marine life, but this is not the case, even though you do have to be mindful what type you decide to join your betta in its tank. Naturally, setting a female betta in the aquarium with the male is not likely to produce a problem and other good fish include tiny fish that don't have large or flashy tails. You can even add a snail, for instance, the large apple snail.

It is important to remember nonetheless that setting a male in the same tank with a female will result in a large number of extra bettas. It is the truth though, that you cannot keep two male bettas together - even placing them in bowls close to each other creates exhibits of hostility.

You can add different ornaments to the tank, as well as crushed rock if needed. The betta should feel comfortable in the aquarium, which should be a place where it can swim around, play or hide whenever it wants to.

Betta fish are perfect for anyone who is hoping to begin in tropical fish maintaining as they are simple to look after and do not call for a lot of care. Nor do they call for a big amount of room and can manage without a lot of items that other varieties of tropical fish can't do without. When thinking of a betta or creating a habitat, consider having additional kinds of smaller fish that that don't have display signals such as flashy tails.

If you buy freshwater fish online, you can avoid having to go to a store to buy them. The store might not even carry the type of fish you want. When you buy fish online, you have many choices of fish.

Before you buy freshwater fish online, you should make sure your aquarium is fit. You should be able to find an aquarium from the freshwater fish store too. You will have to buy food for your freshwater aquarium fish. Just ask the sales rep what type of food you should buy.

You should also find out how to take care of your freshwater fish. To do this, read some books on caring for your freshwater fish or do some research online. Some things to consider are how to clean the aquarium and the amount of food you should feed your freshwater fish.

Do some research on how your fish acts. Some freshwater fish will cannibalize other fish in an aquarium, so you might not want to put a predator fish in a tank with its prey. This would definitely be a waste of your money.

There are several freshwater fish online stores where you can purchase your freshwater fish. A search on the search engine should pull up some of the top freshwater fish online stores. When choosing the freshwater fish store that suits you, first you should of course consider the costs. Each store probably has different pricing so you should check each one.

You should also find out how knowledgeable the freshwater fish store is about their products. If they are unsure or can not answer your questions, then perhaps they might not even provide you with a quality freshwater fish.

You can also check on the reviews of the freshwater fish online store by going to review sites. These sites have feedback from buyers who have bought from the stores.

When calculating the cost of buying freshwater fish online, do not forget the shipping cost. If you do not plan on buying a lot of fish, it may not be worth it to buy freshwater fish online. However, if you want to buy freshwater fish in bulk, then online stores is a good way to go.

Aquarium filters play an extremely important role in maintaining a proper environment in your fish tank. They remove toxins and chemicals from the water.

There are three types of filtration that a proper filter will provide, and all are necessary to keep your tank and the fish healthy. The types are chemical, mechanical, and biological filtration. Most filters that are on the market today will perform all three types of filtration. As far as the actual types of filters, there are several different types and styles. There are biowheel filters, internal, sponge filters, diatom, and wet/dry filters.

Aquarium filters also come as canister filters, undergravel filters, and power filters. Undergravel filters have somewhat of a bad reputation for not working very well. However, if you use them with a powerhead performance of the undergravel filter will be improved. Choosing the appropriate filter for you aquarium is very important. Choosing the wrong one can lead to an unhealthy. If you have too small of a filter chemicals and toxins that need to be removed will not be removed as well as they should. This will leave you with a tank that as an improper environment which in turn could lead to dead fish.

An aquarium filter provides a place for two bacteria types to grow which will establish a healthy biological filter. These bacteria are important for their ability to break down the chemicals that fish produce through their waste. Fish waste produces a chemical called ammonia, which is very toxic to fish, these bacteria break down this toxin into nitrites. Nitrites are also very toxic to fish, another bacteria breaks down nitrites into a less toxic chemical called nitrates. Aquarium filters reduce harmful toxins and can help maintain excellent water in aquariums, but it's still essential to clean your aquarium and to change some of the water twice each week.

Slime growth and stressed out fish are a result of improper filtration. Aquarium filters also assist in less algae build up in tanks. Doing your research on the proper size and kind of filter that you will need will help to ensure the health of your tank as well as your fish. With the right type of tank filtration your fish should live a long happy life.
