Having grown up around animals I always enjoyed their company. My Nan's dog Wolf was my brother, my playmate, my protector and I spent hours simply just being with him. I was always safe with Wolf and I knew we understood each other, but I was never aware of communicating with him. Animal communication in those days was an unbelievable concept.

By the age of 10 I was convinced you really could talk to the animals. My bond with them was so close, and I knew they understood me. Having watched the original Dr. Doolittle film staring Rex Harrison, I was convinced I was right.

The film was so beautiful it awoke a deep passion in me. Now I knew who I was going to be. I was going to be like Dr. Doolittle. I would share my life with these amazing creatures and would spend my time talking with them and healing them.

Sadly my hopes were dashed when I shared my ideals with my dad. He looked rather dismayed when he told the film was only a story, not real at all. No one can truly talk to the animals, and they certainly can't hear them.

The years passed, I started training as a medium and then Sullivan, a gorgeous border collie, entered my life. He'd had a bad start in life and had been extremely ill. Sadly his illness had started to affect his behaviour.

Sullivan's long illness had upset the whole family and I was uncertain of the outcome. One night as I sat with him pondering on his future I was suddenly aware of images in my mind; his birth, his mother and his illness.

I was communicating with my dog! Dear little Sullivan had had such an impact on my life he had started me on the path of being an animal communicator. This was his purpose in life, to push through my doubts and show me the truth.

Since then I have started training as an animal communicator and my whole world has changed. To talk to the animals is wonderful. They have so much love to give and willingly share this love with you. I'm on the path now to being a professional animal communicator and all thanks to a very persistent border collie!

You might be searching for a cage for your new or existing parrot, it can be quite a large decision to make. I am going to help you make this a bit easier by giving you a number of things to consider.

Parrots are very long lived and will be with you for many years so they need to be kept happy, comfortable and relaxed.

The most important rule when looking for a new cage is to go for the largest one you can afford.

Parrots require a lot of space so a cage that is too small is a big problem!

Parrots require lots of stimulation and are very intelligent. Your parrot needs to come out of his cage on a daily basis to play with you or by himself. An area where the parrot can play such as an open top cage is ideal. You can use this for training sessions, rewarding or just general play with your parrot.

Parrot cages need to be very spacious so that whichever parrot cage you choose it needs to provide your parrot with plenty of space and comfort.

It is important that your parrot cage is durable as those powerful beaks can do a lot of damage. Make sure that your cage is parrot proof and designed to last a lifetime rather than a few years.

It is best to position the cage in an active room to help keep your parrot stimulated and happy. The parrot cage should be placed away from areas of high traffic (next to doorways), direct sunshine and draughts as these can stress him out.

Parrots can feel more secure with a wall behind them so a corner of a room can be a good place. Corner cages take up less space than a conventional cage and can provide your parrot with lots of comfort and space that will keep him happy.

Please remember your parrots cage is his home. It is important that he comes out of the cage regularly to interact with you but it is also important that he can also go back to his cage for some personal space if need be.

Remember these important points and you will have a happy, healthy parrot for years to come.

For the most part dogs are enthusiastic to do what their owners want and try their best to please when it comes to receiving a reward for doing so. These are dog tendencies that need to be used when it comes time to teach them tricks. It makes sense to take advantage of their natural predilections. By building on these natural 'dog' attributes and behaviors in combination with rewards to develop pet tricks, the operation becomes easier than trying to teach a trick from square one.

Watch what your dog does for his own amusement. Does he spring into the air pursuing butterflies? Does he like to lay on his back with his feet in the air? If some kind of instinctive behavior can be fostered into an enjoyable trick, that will quicken the training process. Be ready to use a fitting hand motion and verbal command when this behavior is demonstrated and then follow with an instantaneous reward.

For most dogs there are dietary requirements that you'll need to pay mind to, and bearing that in mind you shouldn't actually give your dog an excessive amount of treats. Treats are a great way to get started, but later on the hand signals and some praise will suffice. When you get everything down pat, you can decrease the amount of treats or stop giving them period.

For the most part dogs learn very fast and they'll understand that a treat waits for them so long as they perform the trick when you give the command. Sometimes you might have to improvise, so for example after you teach them "down" you might from that position teach them "play dead", and you'll have to get the dog to associate the new command with the additional trick. After a bit of training you can use other commands such as "stay", "come", and even "sit" and add on tricks from those starting points.

Another way to get your dog's undivided attention when working on some tricks is to utilize a favorite toy. Using a tug toy or a ball your dog likes to play with, just out of his reach, rapidly move it up and down coaxing him to jump at the same time giving him the "jump" vocal command. After repeating until he relates the command and hand motion with the act of jumping, dispose of the toy and just utilize your hand and the vocal command.

Your dog's ability to smell is a huge factor in the training. One thing that you can do is play a little game with your dog that involves hiding a favorite toy or treat and then having them find it. You can start out by putting the toy in a close location so that it's easy for them to find the object, and when they become more adept at that you can hide it farther away so that they have to work for it. After a while you will be able to use this as a viable trick to entertain your dog as well as any guests that you might have.

Having your dog give you a high five is also great, and the good news is it's not a hard trick for a dog to pull off. The majority of dogs will just hand you their paw as soon as you show them your hand, but for those that don't there might be a little more work involved. You may need to teach them several times, and make sure you give them a treat every time they do it properly so that they know there's an actual reason to do it for you!

Quite often the dog will present you his paw at once. With some dogs you will have to help them get the idea by elevating their paw whilst using the verbal command. Bear in mind the need to praise even if you have to elevate his paw into position, then lower the paw back down and repeat.

After a trick has been taught it's simple to augment it. "Give me five" can without difficulty be expanded into "sit up" by slowly elevating the paw so that the other foot will spontaneously raise up. By then holding both feet so that the dog is in a "sit up" position, vocalizing the command and rewarding with praise or a treat, he will, with repetition, connect the dots.

Training a dog can be fun, and it has a few other benefits as well. By training your dog and spending time with him or her you will create a strong bond. You and your dog will become very close and you both will be a lot happier!

There are many things to consider when you are starting a Koi pond project. It's easy to see why so many people forget to pay attention to the plumbing aspect of the project. This is a mistake I hope you won't make. A lot of headaches can be avoided if you pay proper attention to the pipe and valve layout of your project before you get started.

Lay out a schematic of all the piping and valves you plan to use. Mark the type and size of each length of pipe and valve. Identify and lengths of pipe that will be underground and whether there will be any sections under pressure. This will depend on the type of pond you are building and the equipment and accessories you will use.

There are always many questions about the type of piping and valves to use. When comes to piping there both flexible piping and rigid plastic piping. The flexible piping is very versatile but it can't handle the various valves and other equipment you will probably want to have in your system. I would avoid this type and only consider using it when rigid piping just can't be used.

Rigid plastic pipe is always the best choice for any Koi pond. It will look the best and give the best long term, durable installation. Make sure you use the size pipe for the job at hand. For example, don't use a 1 in. pipe for the floor drain in a gravity-fed system and them be surprised when it won't work as you anticipated. It's too small. You need at least a 4 in. pipe for this kind a drain.

Do a "dry run" of the system. Layout each section and valve combination. Remember once you have glued the connections they won't come apart unless you cut them and start over. Mark the location of all the pieces for later assembly.

Make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation of all equipment. You would be surprise how many people think they have a better way to do it. Also use plenty of valves before and after various components so they can be isolated and/or removed for repair and maintenance.

The alternative is to cut the piping to remove them - a very expensive and time consuming approach. Always use a slide or ball valve before the filtration system so it can be isolated from the pond for maintenance and cleaning.

These simple steps should make your Koi pond project go a lot faster with better results and less money out of your pocket. Follow these tips and you are on your way to a successful Koi pond project.

Parrots make amazing pets. Teaching them to sing can be a joy to listen to. They live a long time, sometimes up to 100 years. So, you can be friends with them for the rest of your life. Training these 3 parrots will achieve you the best results. Get our parrot training newsletter for more info.

The Parrot: African Grey

These parrots are medium sized and are usually of a greyish colour. Sometimes they have non standard colouring. This is best parrot for talking. Parrots speak in a multitude of voices. Unfortunately not all Grey's will speak. It has been known for Grey's not to show any sign of talking. They can be very loud and scream a lot so need much attention. Once you make friends, the bird will be the most loyal pet you could ever hope for.

The Conure Parrot

These parrots are small sized and have very big tails attached to their bodies. They come in many colours and are extremely intelligent. They love to fool around, clown others and play endlessly. They can be quick learners and good to train. They will be happy if you teach them to talk. The drawback is that they are best matched to owners who have lots of time to spend with them.

This is because they need several hours of training every day to learn how to socialize, not bite the owner and correct behavioural defects. You need to train these birds early in order to stop them screeching a lot.

Macaw

These parrots have been known to survive for about more than fifty years and knowing this you should be ready for a long relation with your bird. You will want to get this parrot a big enclosure as it is large. You need to get a high and wide cage to make this parrot comfortable. Keep this bird out of its cage as much as possible.

it has a powerful snapper and ike to bite on things. Give them lots of toys so they they dont attack your furniture and ruin it. Get a good amount of toys for this parrot to ensure it is happy.

Remember parrot training is vital, never neglect your parrot or you could end up with parrot behaviour problems.

A very good question!

I would have to say YES you definitely need to train your Parrot whether you have a Budgie or a Blue and Gold Macaw.

All parrots are highly intelligent, social creatures that require lots of stimulation in both the wild and in captivity. In their natural environment parrots spend most of their life learning. Young birds learn from their parents and will pick up new behaviours quickly. From how to find food to recognising a predator all young parrots have to learn to interact with others of their own species.

In captivity, parrots still have that natural instinct and desire to learn either from their parents or in the case of most captive birds " their owners.

What if I don't train my parrot?

Well quite simply this is often how unwanted or problem behaviours develop. A parrot that is deprived of attention is going to try to get some whenever it gets the opportunity. Any reaction from their owner is a positive experience to the parrot and will encourage the parrot to repeat the behaviour. So when your parrot starts screaming like crazy late at night it is trying to prompt a reaction from you. If you start screaming (and often swearing!) back then your parrot will be very pleased, as he has managed to get you to respond. This unwanted screaming will then increase over time as the parrot has been rewarded for doing it.

The owners of parrots are the usual cause of behavioural problems. Your parrot can be accidentally rewarded without you realising it.

Parrot behaviour will be positively or negatively affected by everything that you do while you are close to your parrot. When you react to something your parrot has done then that behaviour will either decrease or increase over time.

An example would be if your parrot is in a bad mood and you try to take him out of his cage to give him a treat. Most likely he will be reluctant to come and may back away from you or even show a sign of aggression to tell you he wants to stay put. You give up but give him his treat anyway so therefore reward him for either being aggressive or backing away from you. In the future this behaviour is likely to increase as a result of this.

When you are with your parrot you really need to think about everything you do.

A happy and healthy parrot needs a ongoing training schedule. Try to make sure that you are rewarding the things you want him to do and try to avoid rewarding those things you don't want.

Your relationship with your parrot will be taken to a whole new level when your parrot understands what YOU want from him.

The Border Terrier is a medium sized terrier breed that originally came from the region between Scotland and England. This dog came from the line of Scottish terriers primarily the Dandie Dinmont and Bedlington terriers. Currently, the Border Terrier is a favorite companion of many people that it ranked 10th in UK kennel registrations and 81st in the American Kennel Club.

The name Border Terrier is derived from the fact that it was discovered living in the communities along the Scottish borders. This breed has existed for many centuries but it was only in 1920 that the Kennel Club recognized it as an official breed. Before, however, the Border Terrier would only fall under the "Any Other Variety" category.

What differentiates this breed from other terriers is its otter-shaped head which is a broad skull and a short, strong muzzle. Its ears are V-shaped and hang towards the cheeks. Its tail is naturally fairly short, thick at the base and tapers at the end.

Its body is lean and narrow and is covered with short, dense coat. The average height of this dog is between 13 to 26 inches at the withers. The weight is 13 to 15.5 pounds for the male and 11.5 to 14 for the female.

The Border Terrier has a double coat that is soft underneath and coarse, stringy and weather resistant at the top. This rough-looking coat sheds twice a year and thus needs hand stripping during these seasons so as to remove dead hair and allow the coat to grow back unobstructed. The common coat colors for this breed are blue and tan, red, wheaten, and grizzle and tan.

This dog may look rough but it is actually amiable and gets along well with other dogs and animals. It is not aggressive and is not wary of strangers. The Border Terrier is highly intelligent and even tempered but sometimes it is confrontational and stubborn, too.

When it comes to task training, the Border terrier performs excellently and it can jump up to amazing heights and even run fast given that it has short legs. When it comes to agility, this dog is quick to learn and outperforms other breeds outstandingly. However, when it comes to learning tricks, this dog is less trainable.

The Border Terrier is originally a hunter and so it has great stamina and energy that needs to be taken care of with daily exercise such as long walks. This dog is also sensitive to pain and so owners should watch for this dog's health. An apartment living is sufficient for this dog's space needs because it is not overly active inside the house.

One contagious respiratory infection is known as kennel cough. Kennel cough is also known as tracheobronchitis, canine infectious tracheobronchitis, Bordetella, and Bordetellosis.

This highly contagious respiratory infection can easily spread to dogs that are confined together in a kennel. This is how this condition became known as kennel cough.

This respiratory infection can be contracted in ways other than confinement in a kennel with an infected dog. Kennel cough can be spread between dogs through contact with contaminated ground or toys that had been in contact with a dog with kennel cough.

This respiratory infection causes a hacking cough and can cause the dog to gag, sneeze, or vomit. Kennel cough may cause snorting and fever.

A veterinarian is likely to question the dog owner about any history of being in a kennel or around dogs with respiratory symptoms when diagnosing kennel cough. Some diagnostic tests, like blood tests or a bacteria culture, may be used to confirm the diagnosis of kennel cough.

The condition often goes away on its own. Kennel cough typically lasts ten to twenty days. In some cases the kennel cough may be prolonged or be recurrent. Severe cases of kennel cough can lead to pneumonia.

Antibiotics may be given to treat kennel cough. Sometimes, a cough suppressant is also given. The best prevention of kennel cough is a vaccination that is normally given as part of a puppys vaccines.

Preventing the disease is done by limiting contact of dogs with infected dogs. A kennel should require proof that the dog has been vaccinated for kennel cough. If a cage or toys were used by a dog with kennel cough, the items need to be thoroughly disinfected.

There is some debate if kennel cough poses any risk to humans. In the past, human risk was dismissed as not possible, but some evidence suggests that young children and people with compromised immune systems could contract tracheobronchitis.

A dog is not naturally stubborn, but he definitely does not understand what he needs to do. That is the reason why it is necessary for the owner to establish that he is the alpha in the house. This enforcement of proper behavior can be done by being firm and patient. And that can be seen when trying to enforce the command of 'come'.

It's in their nature for dogs to probe their surroundings. They will smell anything and everything, dig up, turn things over, and snatch little items. When doing a teaching session diminish any distractions by trying to be as far away from other people, aninmals, and voices as practical. It's a good idea to use an area that is clear of obstructions or a room without small objects on the floor.

Be sure to take full advantage of any spontaneous behavior you see. For instance when you observe the dog coming toward you, give a voice command along with a hand gesture to reinforce this behavior. Try to use a word and signal that you don't normally use during your training sessions.

Put the dog in a sitting position facing you. Reinforce the command of 'stay' as you move away. Use hand gestures and voice commands. Praise the dog if the behavior is correct. Do not reward the dog for an incorrect or partial response.

Keep repeating this, as you move back. If your dog comes towards you too quickly, use 'sit/stay' commands again. If the dog does not move try coaxing with treats or toys.

Reluctant or slow learners might need collar training or leash training. Put the dog in the sit and stay position. Start moving away, letting the leash go slack. If the dog does not obey you, tug the leash gently with the appropriate hand and voice command.

For a dog that comes too early, use a long rope or leash and wrap it around a stake or a tree. If the dog starts to respond too early pull the cord as you vocalize the "stay" command. If there are no trees available, use a friend to help with the session. The detrimental part about using someone else during the session is the dog can become confused about who they should listen to. It's always best if they just focus on one person.

Consistence as well as patience is necessary during training sessions. Human induced commands like sit, stay and come are not naturally understood by dogs. Yelling at the dog when it makes errors or does not obey your orders is quite a counterproductive exercise. You have to establish your alpha status by your body posture, a firm voice, and your patience while you wait for it to obey you. Physical leading and restraint is not such a helpful technique.

Many dog breeds are quite willing to be trained, and respond very positively to quick praise, for proper and correct behavior. If necessary, you have to show that you are the stubborn one waiting for them to 'come', instead of your going to them.

Rabbits can live anywhere between 12-18 years, so it really pays to do your research before you commit to adopting a rabbit. Rabbits require exercise, human interaction, training and attention on a daily basis. Rabbits are social animals and really thrive in an environment where they are interacting with your family.

Young children and rabbits are usually not a very good mix. As rabbits are fragile, young ones usually do not know how to handle the rabbit gently. Rabbits can easily suffer from stress and the loud unpredictable nature of children can cause your bunny to have a heart attack.

Older kids do really benefit from the responsibility of owing a pet, they know how to care and understand easily how to handle your rabbit. Parents beware though, often children lose interest and the parents do get lumped with the rabbits care. Younger children really do not know how to handle the rabbit with care, so rabbits are traditionally for older children.

Making sure that you are well informed about what to except when raising your rabbit, is the best way to avoid any problems later down the track. There is a lot involved when you own a rabbit, but knowing what to expect will ensure that your rabbit is well behaved and a great addition to any family.

Rabbits can show aggression and can be quite misbehaved. Doing your research about the breeders and the parents of the bunny can show you what he or she is likely to be like when they are older. Well behaved rabbits are wonderful additions to any family. To ensure a well behaved rabbit, investing in a good rabbit care guide will ensure that you have all the correct information to raise your rabbit correctly. A correctly behaved rabbit is a wonderful addition to any family.

The Puggle dog unbelievably rose to fame since its inception 20 years ago that today it is regarded as the most famous of the hybrids. This hybrid resulted from the crossing of a female beagle and a male pug during the 1980's when the US started on developing a new breed of dogs. The Puggle was the particular result of experimentations of Wallace Havens of Wisconsin, USA.

The Puggle is famous as a lap dog and many famous people such as Uma Thurman and Julianne Moore are known to own one. Countless of articles pertaining to the Puggle are also said to have contributed to the fame of this hybrid. Finally in 2000, Wallace Haven began commercially breeding the Puggle.

At a glance, the Puggle can be likened to an English Mastiff only several times smaller because both hold similarities in appearance and behavior. These two, except for size, have almost the same broad snout, short coat and dangling ears. For the Puggle, however, there is no set standard for its appearance and behavior because each can have differing traits depending on what and how much it inherited from the parent breeds.

The general weight for this dog is 15 to 30 pounds and the height is between 10 to 15 inches at the shoulders. There are Puggles that have larger and distinct heads while there are some that have thinner and smaller heads. Most Puggles have the tail of the Beagle but curls up like the Pug; some have inherited the underbite of the Pug and some have not.

The body of the Puggle may be described as stocky and muscled with a coat that's short and smooth; the forehead is wrinkled and the legs are short. Common coat colors of the Puggle are fawn, white, black, and multicolored such as a combination of brown and black. This coat also sheds heavily that's why this dog is not suited with people who have allergies to dog hair and dander.

Because this dog is a heavy shedder, daily brushing with a fur-removing brush is helpful as well as regular baths. Its eyes discharge quite frequently and so its facial wrinkles and under eyes should be wiped clean regularly using a warm washcloth. The nails of this dog also grow quite quickly therefore regular clipping is necessary together with ear cleaning and tooth brushing.

The Puggle is a highly energetic dog and it has an independent spirit and a curious sense of smell. One of its critical needs is daily exercise in the form of walking, running, or playing in a well-spaced yard or in the park. Like the Beagle, the Puggle also loves to dig and howl and like the Pug, it likes to wander off on a mission to follow a distinct smell.

The Puggles are widely known to be highly sociable creatures that love meeting and interacting with new dog breeds and animals. They are very affectionate towards humans and they love to have some attention from the family and new people especially little children. These dogs have a great desire for closeness that they like to lick, snuggle and bond with humans.

The jaw muscles of a dog are some of the strongest muscles in the animal kingdom. The Golden retriever, which is just average sized can strip and tear apart a thick Rawhide bone in just a couple of minutes. And that is why it is a pity that they can treat furniture the same way.

Different breeds will have different tendencies to chew and that is why owners need to know their own breed's behavior patterns. However, mostly all dogs will chew on objects in and about the house. This is why it is important to focus their attention on objects intended for them. Still, making the dog do this can be very difficult.

Puppies and younger dogs definitely do not discriminate between whatever they chew. However, owners can train dogs in such a manner that they do not chew on objects which Owners want them to keep away from.

This can be done by making sure that an object that might cause temptation is put away from the dog's reach. That is also why dogs should not gain easy access to laundry and items like shoes to chew upon. Another good idea is to keep the dog's toys away from children's toys.

One can also keep a large number of attractive toys at different locations, both indoors and outdoors, which can be chewed by the dog. Some of these items may include hard rubber, plastic bones, and rawhide bones according to the breed one has. It is not suggested to give a real bone like a chicken bone to a dog, because it might splinter and cause internal injuries.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of toys made especially for dogs and some of them have treats in hollow interiors. A dog needs to work really hard to get to the treat and not only is it going to have a good physical and mental workout, but it is going to get a treat reward at the end of the activity.

One can also admonished the dog firmly especially when it decides to chew upon unsuitable objects. However, yelling or sharp physical punishment is not desirable. So instead of yelling at one's dog, one needs to vent that anger and frustration somewhere else. That is not easily done, but has to be followed, for a harmonious relationship between the pet and the master.

The development of specific habits can be done by leashing the dog. Then an unsuitable object has to be placed near the dog. The moment, the dog approaches it, the leash should be jerked sideways, and No said very firmly.

Remember that the leash always has to be jerked sideways, instead of the neck being yanked back. The muscles of the neck are strong, but the throat can be bruised easily. The jerking movement is not a punishment, but reinforcement.

A dog may have the tendency of chewing objects found outside like fences, chairs, plants and other items. Such behavior can be contained by coating homemade mixtures like cayenne pepper, upon the surfaces which the dog likes to chew. Some commercial products also have bitter apple, which discourages the dog from chewing any surface.

Successful dog training can only be done with consistency, patience and a lot of persistence. The idea behind stopping chewing is not to start a new behavior pattern, but to "suppress" a natural behavior pattern.

Often, redirecting the dog to acceptable objects is the best bet since it is impossible to eliminate the dog's instincts. That is why it is necessary to be calm and vigilant. Keep your cool even when the dog chews on the new carpet. Objects can be replaced. A good relationship with a pet cannot.

Magnets are used as an alternative treatment for pain. Magnetic dog collars are an option for the treatment of dog pain. People who use magnets themselves often claim to have received benefits from the use of magnets, so the theory is that magnets will also help dogs.

Many alternative treatments for pets start as treatment for people. Aromatherapy, acupuncture, herbal remedies, and massage are alternative treatments used for dogs because they show benefits for people.

Magnetic dog collars are made in many different styles and sizes. Some magnetic dog collars are thick, leather collars with embedded magnets. Other magnetic dog collars are made of nylon or other material.

Used mostly for arthritis and joint pain, magnets are thought to have anti-inflammatory abilities. Many people believe that magnets have detoxifying power and can improve circulation. The use of magnets to treat medical conditions is sometimes referred to as magnotherapy.

Some magnetic dog collar retailers claim that magnetic dog collars repel fleas. Since reviews from customers are on the websites that sell magnetic pet products, the reviews may be biased and only positive reviews are shown. Therefore, it is difficult to judge what dog owners experiences have been with magnetic dog collars.

Some dog owners have asked other dog owners if the magnetic dog collars work. Many dog owners recommended the use of chondroitin and glucosamine instead of a magnetic dog collar. Dog owners may want to ask the veterinarian for an opinion on the effectiveness of magnetic dog collars.

Other pet products have been designed to use magnets for the treatment of dog pain. Dog beds that contain magnets are sold. Some dog pads containing magnets are designed to be placed under the dogs regular dog bed. Magnetic dog vests are similar to dog sweaters, but they contain magnets.

These products can be found on the websites of Internet retailers that specialize in magnet pet products. Some websites that sell magnetic dog collars claim that the magnets of the collar do not interfere with the micro-chipping of pets.

When Judy's fourteen year old cat passed away, she was faced with a decision: Should her beloved pet be brought to a vet for disposal, or buried in her own backyard?

Judy isn't sure what the right thing is to do, or how to move forward, but she can't just throw her beloved pet away like trash. That would be wrong because it doesn't honor her companion's spirit. What choices does a cat-lover have?

Check with your city or township administration whether there are any laws regarding pet burials. Some communities forbid home burials of any animals, pets or not.

If you are uncomfortable with legal restrictions imposed by the town, talk to your vet. Find out if the laws are enforced. What are the consequences for ignoring restrictions? Sadness over the loss of your pet is no excuse for breaking the law or endangering your neighbors sanitation.

Your vet may offer to take on the task of disposing of the cat. Some people are better off letting somebody else they trust take care of deceased pet. You'll never know how the feline body was discarded. The Vet will be very discreet about it. Just don't ask.

If you are a no-nonsense person, just find a space in your yard and bury the kitty there. As long as nobody complains, it's your yard and you have a right to use it the way you like. If you decide to do this, make sure to mark the site and avoid digging there or planting anything for at least 5 years.

If it feels right, you may want to make the grave site attractive with a stone and pretty plantings. One could make a plaque or wooden sign to commemorate the pet by name and, like a human gravesite, it will be a comforting place to remember the beloved cat and take pleasure in happy memories.

Some practical tips: be sure to dig a hole at least two feet deep, and keep larger animals out of the yard who might be tempted to dig. That would not be pleasant for you. Dogs like terriers are particularly bad about this, as are raccoons. Overall, gather information and investigate all the options, and you'll be most pleased with your choice.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), started in 1866, was the first humane organization in the United States. The purpose of the ASPCA is to ""to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States." Through education, awareness, and legislative programs its 750,000 members have helped in the prevention of animal cruelty.

It's very easy to find ASPCA logo-themed items. Not only are they attractive, but you can also feel good about yourself knowing that for every product you buy with an ASPCA logo, 6% of the retail price goes towards one of its humane programs. Even personal checks now contain images from ASPCA.

Profits from sales of these items benefits such programs as an animal hospital, an adoption facility, and the Humane Law Enforcement Department, which is located in New York City. The ASPCA even has a poison control hotline for animals.

One of the reasons that the ASPCA is so popular is that they prevent animal cruelty primarily to animals that function as pets. Many dog and cat lovers appreciate this, as pets can become part of your family and you want to protect them.

When trying to decide on what image to use for your ASPCA checks, you don't have to worry about either being a cat or dog person. There are checks available with both animals on them. You can also find different breeds of dogs available as images. One of the cutest checks has a picture of three little puppies posing together in a stack of hay.

The fun thing about ASPCA checks is that they also come with matching accessories. While you enjoy your personal bank checks, you can also enjoy matching address labels and even a coordinating canvas checkbook cover.

While the personal checks feature images of dogs or cats, you may find checkbook covers that have little paw prints walking steadfastly over the cover. You can find the color orange featured on the checkbook covers since orange is the ASPCA's official color.

Aside from single checks, you can also order duplicate checks. If you're the type of person that forgets to record your transactions then duplicate checks can be good because they keep a copy of the checks that have been written right there in the checkbook.

Aside from the checks being stylish than plain white checks, you can also order them feeling good about yourself since you know that the proceeds will benefit animals.

Personal bank checks with stylish images can be expensive when you order them from your local bank. However, by ordering checks online you can save around 50% of the total cost. You can also expect to have them delivered in about 5 days, which can even be faster than your bank can get them to you.

Heartworms are parasitic worms that are transmitted by mosquitoes. The heartworms from a mosquito bite migrate to the dogs heart and cause heartworm disease.

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal condition. Heartworm disease is a worldwide dog health problem. Dog owners can help prevent heartworm disease with heartworm medication for dogs.

Puppies as young as eight weeks old can start preventative treatment for heartworm disease. An adult dog should be tested for heartworms before being given medicine to prevent heartworm disease.

Coughing, shortness of breath, jaundice, vision problems, and convulsions are possible symptoms of heartworm disease in dogs. A sign of heartworm disease is a decrease in activity or tendency to tire easily.

Severe heartworm disease can cause an enlarged liver, accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, and loss of consciousness. As the heartworm disease progresses, the dog may succumb to congestive heart failure.

The veterinarian uses blood tests to check for dog heartworms. The blood samples are analyzed for the presence of heartworm larvae. X-rays may be used to confirm a diagnosis and check the severity of heartworm disease in dogs.

Treatment for heartworm disease has the best outcome when the heartworm disease is caught early. Dogs should be tested regularly for heartworm disease. If the heartworm disease is advanced, the treatment can be fatal.

The harsh chemicals used to treat heartworm disease kills the adult and immature heartworms. There is also danger of a large collection of heartworms being killed in the heart and blocking the blood flow. A veterinarian may not recommend heartworm treatment for dogs with severe heartworm disease or other health problems.

Heartworm disease can infect other animals besides dogs. Domestic cats, foxes, and other wild animals can get heartworm disease. Heartworms are not considered to pose a risk of heartworm disease in humans.

Many common dog illnesses can be prevented. Some common dog illnesses are prevented by vaccinations that dogs normally receive. Other common dog illnesses can be prevented by the dog owners vigilance.

While not all common dog illnesses can be prevented, getting the dog the proper vaccines can prevent many potentially serious dog illnesses. Rabies and parvovirus are two examples of common dog illnesses that are prevented by dog vaccinations.

The viral infection known as rabies is contracted through a bite from an infected animal. Rabies is one of the few dog diseases that can infect humans. Rabies in dogs has become much less common since dogs are routinely vaccinated for this disease.

Parvovirus is another viral infection that can be prevented with dog vaccinations. Parvovirus causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms including bloody diarrhea. Young puppies with the parvovirus can experience sudden death is the viral infection attacks the heart.

A common reason for taking a dog to the veterinarian is diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by viral infections or ingesting dangerous substances or rotten food. A dog owner should keep garbage secured from a dogs access to help prevent diarrhea.

Many veterinary visits are due to the dog experiencing vomiting. The same causes of diarrhea can cause vomiting in dogs. The dog owner should contact the veterinarian if the dog has blood in either diarrhea or vomit or has vomiting or diarrhea for more than a day.

Another common dog illness is ear infections. Keeping the dogs ears clean and free from dirt and debris can reduce the risk for ear infections. Ear mites can pose a risk for ear infections, so any ear mite infestation should be treated promptly.

Brushing the dogs teeth and taking the dog for regular veterinary dental visits and cleanings can prevent periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a common dog illness that can be prevented. It is caused by plaque and tartar buildup on the dogs teeth.

If you are getting ready to purchase a guinea pig cage, there are some things that you want to keep in mind. Your guinea pig will spend a great deal of time in his cage. Therefore you want to make sure he has plenty of space. Following are some other tips purchasing a guinea pig cage.

One of the most important things is size. Your guinea pig will need approximately 6 ft. at the minimum. And even if that, you want to let him out to run for exercise some at least each day.

Okay now we know how big the cage should be, let's talk about the structure of the cage. never use a fish aquarium for your guinea pig. It is very important that the guinea pig fresh air, so you want to be sure to find a cage that has wire sides, so that air can circulate freely.

The top of the guinea pigs cage should also be wire. You do not want the cage to be open especially if you have other pets in the home. Guinea pigs do not climb, but you'll want to keep other hazards out of the cage.

Now, for the bottom, you do not wire. This will make it difficult for your guinea pig to walk on it may hurt his feet. Ideally, the bottom should be a smooth plastic material that is washable. Wood is not recommended as it will absorb water, and will begin to have an odor over time.

If you shop in a place like PetSmart, you'll find a great assortment of guinea pig cages to meet all of these criteria. The national chain pet stores have done research and know what is best for each type of animal, and carry the best supplies for them.

Just as important as choosing the cage, is deciding upon a place to put the cage in your home. It's best not to leave the cage on the floor where there may be drafts. If positioning the cage on a table or counter, be sure there is plenty of room for the entire base.

We have discussed all of the things that you need to keep in mind when purchasing your first guinea pig cage. All of these guidelines will help you to pick just the right one, and you'll be well on your way to a happy healthy guinea pig.

Maine coon cats are hardy cats with a sturdy build and thick coats. Two of the distinguishing characteristics of Maine Coon cats are their heavily-tufted ears and bushy, brush-like tail.

Many legends tell stories about the origin of the Maine Coon cat. One such legend is that the Maine Coon cat breed originated from the mating of raccoons and feral domestic cats. This is not genetically possible.

The physical characteristics of the Maine Coon cats seem well adapted to the winters of Maine. Maine Coon cats have thick, long coats and tufted toes that have been compared to snowshoes.

The Maine Coon cat has a rectangular body. Their rounded eyes are large. Possible eye colors for Maine Coon cats are gold, green, green-gold, or copper. Blue eye and odd-eyes are possible on white and bi-colored Maine Coon cats.

The large, heavily-tufted ears are set wide on the Maine Coons medium-sized head. Maine Coon cats may have a frontal ruff which is considered a desirable characteristic by breed standards.

White, blue, red, cream, and black are the possible solid colorings for Maine Coon cats. The possible colorings other than the solid colors are tabby, shaded, smoke, calico, tortoiseshell, and bi-colored.

Maine Coon kittens are slow to develop. They only reach full size at three to five years of age. Kittens of other cat breeds often reach adult size by the time they are two years old.

The average weight range for a Maine Coon cat is twelve to twenty pounds with the females weighing less than the males. They are heavy-boned and broad chested. They are considered to be medium to large sized cats.

A prospective cat owner should contact a reputable Maine Coon breeder. There may be a waiting list for a Maine Coon kitten as there often is for many cat breeds.

Putting a pet on a plane for travel can be a stressful time for owners and their pet. Before you travel with your pet, it is important to make sure you have implemented the following tips to ensure your pets safety as well as its health and well-being.

Pet Risk Destination Assessment: Check health risks in the destination area such as Lyme disease, Rabies, Heartworm, and other parasites and viruses. Treat your pet to prevent affliction. As well, check for breed restrictions at the destination before traveling. Some types of breeds and animal species are banned.

Assess Your Pets Health: Travel can be a stressful time for any pet. Make sure that your pet is healthy. Sick, injured, too young or too old, and pregnant pets should not fly. Make sure all of the vaccinations are up-to-date. Vaccinations must be administered at least 30 days before departure. Rabies certificates should be obtained and signed no more than 10 days before departure. Make sure that your pet's nails have been clipped to protect against them hooking on the carrier's door, holes, and other small spaces. Do not feed your pet for four to six hours prior to air travel. Vomiting in the carrier is messy.

Pet Identification: Provide your pet with two identification tags. Make sure the tag contains your name, all of your contact numbers, home address, and phone number and address of your destination location. A microchip is a permanent way to identify your pet. Another option is to acquire a pet passport. A pet passport can be purchased at most local pet stores or on the internet. The passport will keep all of your pets health information and emergency contacts readily available. Attach a photograph of your pet to the top of the carrier. This will help with identification if it gets out of the carrier. You should keep a picture in your purse or wallet. You should also place the words, "Live Animal" on the top and the sides of the carrier.

Appropriate Pet Carrier: Make sure you have a durable carrier with handles and proper locking. It should also have good ventilation and the pet should be able stand up, turn around and lie down. Write your home and destination contact information on the carrier. On the inside, lay comfortable bedding such as linen. As well, place ice cubes in the pets dish in the carrier. It will melt during the trip and provide the pet with water without making a mess.

Know Your Airlines Pet Policies: Pet policies differ among the various airlines. Some airlines have such restrictions as cabin weight limitations, a certain breed prohibited, no pets when there is bad weather, and certain pet carrier guidelines. Make sure you call ahead of time to obtain the essential information on flights and flying with your pet.

Traveling with a pet requires much planning and preparation. When you pack for your pet, make sure to include leashes, collar, food, medication and its favorite toy. Following the above tips will help ensure a safe and less stressful trip on the airplane making your trip much more relaxing and enjoyable.

Have you ever thought of owning freshwater fish? Before you go out buying freshwater fish, you will need a freshwater fish aquarium set up. You do not want to just buy any freshwater fish aquarium either. There are many factors you must consider.

You need to do some research before you buy a freshwater fish aquarium. For example, you need to know the right size aquarium, what to put in your aquarium, and how to clean your aquarium.

The first step in buying a freshwater fish aquarium is to figure out the right size of the aquarium. Not only do you need to consider how much swimming area your freshwater fish will need, but you also have to consider how much space in your house is available for installing an aquarium. Do not just estimate the amount of space you need. Get a ruler and measure the exact space needed.

Figure out what you will put in your freshwater fish aquarium. Put some plants and other small figures for eye appeal. Make sure the fish you buy will not eat the plants.

Research into the type of fish you want to put in your freshwater fish aquarium. You have to be very careful and not put predator and prey fish in the same tank. It would be a great waste of money if your fish ate all the other fish.

You should also research on how to clean your freshwater fish aquarium. Algae can grow in your aquarium and you have to have a method for getting rid of that. You could put algae eating fish in your freshwater fish aquarium to take care of the issue. You can also use a filter.

Another way you can clean the tank is by putting in plants. Not only will the plants help make the freshwater fish aquarium look good, but it will clear out the nitrates in the tank.

Setting up a freshwater fish aquarium is not simple task. If you do your research you should be able to set one up easily though.

Though bladder problems in dogs be terribly uncomfortable, there are safe, gentle options for treatment him which mediate the pain and your dog's overall health.

Stone-like material or crystals build up in the urinary tract or in bladder of dogs. This leaves your dog vulnerable to bladder problems. The first step in treating crystals or stones in your dog's bladder is understanding what causes them.

Canine struvite crystals occur frequently in dogs and they are usually caused by urinary tract infection. On the other hand, canine oxalate bladder stones are caused by a build up of calcium in the blood stream.

No matter which kind of stones your dog experiences, your dog is going through considerable pain and discomfort. If you need to know how to treat crystals in bladder of dogs without further exacerbating the problem, then the answer is homeopathic remedies. Using a special blend of plant based ingredients, these all natural products can help to ease symptoms and strengthen the immune system to improve overall health.

To be effective, homeopathic remedies must be part of a healthy daily routine. Feeding your dog a special diet low in certain minerals and proteins can help to balance pH levels in urine and encourage stones to dissolve naturally, avoiding the necessity for surgery.

Along with a proper diet, free of additives and preservatives, one answer as to treating crystals in bladder of dogs is by ensuring he is well hydrated. Your dog needs reliable access to a clean water source. Water is vital to flushing the toxins out of your dogs system. Exercise is also extremely important as it helps to keep the entire body functioning properly. So too is proper hygiene since regular bathing and brushing can stop the spread of bacteria.

The other step in treating crystals in dog bladder is to make sure your dog urinates regularly. Holding it in can cause serious urinary tract damage, so you should always heed the signs that your dog needs to go out. The more vigilant you are about this, the less of a chance there is that your dog will develop crystals or other urinary tract problems.

So what about treating an infection in bladder of dogs? Homeopathic remedies are made from 100% natural ingredients. These products can work to alleviate painful symptoms without subjecting your dog to harsh side effects. Natural ingredients have healing antiseptic and antibacterial properties which help to soothe and protect the urinary tract while naturally ridding it of blockage.

Its critical to seek immediate veterinary treatment when you notice the signs of a problem kidney in a cat. The earlier your cat gets treatment the more chances she has for a longer life with you. While chronic renal failure arrives over a long period of time, acute kidney failure is an emergency. Here's some tips to recognizing the symptoms of kidney failure in cats.

Feline kidneys are vulnerable to a number of life-threatening disorders that can lead to a failing kidney in a cat or chronic renal failure. Your vet would probably agree with the statistics that they see more cats 7 years and older that are showing signs of kidney failure in cats.

The risk for feline kidney disease may be inherited. Some long-haired breeds like Angoras and Persians and short-haired cats like the Abyssinian are more genetically predisposed to kidney problems, either acute or chronic renal failure.

The main difference between chronic and acute kidney failure in cats is that acute renal failure is a very severe situation that occurs relatively suddenly - over a week or a month. Chronic renal failure creeps up on your cat over a longer time, years even.

The most common cause of kidney failure in cats occurs when your cat swallows a toxic substance like antifreeze, pesticides, cleaning fluids and human medications. Common causes of acute renal failure include blockages that prevent a good flow of blood to the kidney in a cat or stones and inflammations blocking the flow of urine from the kidney into the bladder.

Signs Of Kidney Failure In Cats

Occasional vomiting Increase in water consumption Increase in urination Weight loss Loss of appetite

Your vet may refer to some of these symptoms with the terms "polydipsia" or "polyuria". Polydipsia means that your cat is drinking a lot of water - lots of it. On the other end, In fact, you this may be the first sign your recognize of a problem kidney in a cat. When you clean the litter box you find numerous pee-balls of cat litter, or unusually large ones.

If your vet suspects kidney failure in a cat she will evaluate your cat's BUN. BUN stands for blood urea nitrogen, as well as the creatinine levels. When these are elevated it means your cat's kidneys aren't working right and need extra help.

Traditionally, treating renal failure in cats is determined by the disorder causing the condition. If acute kidney failure is caused by a urinary tract blockage the stone must be removed immediately. Treating chronic renal failure is done with a more conservative approach. This may include intravenous fluid therapy and changes to diet.

Dog dental care is often ignored by dog owners unless the dog develops a dental problem. Routine dental care can prevent dental problems. A dogs teeth should be brushed every day.

Like humans, dogs can develop dental problems including dog dental disease and infections due to a buildup of tartar and plaque on the teeth. Dog dental disease can cause pain, especially when chewing. Regular brushing removes the plaque that causes problems.

In addition to daily brushing, the dogs teeth should be cleaned by a veterinarian at least once a year. The veterinarian can also check for dental problems during this appointment.

Many dogs resist allowing their teeth to be brushed. If teeth brushing is started while the dog is a puppy, there is likely to be less resistance.

Some dog dental care products are designed specifically for dogs that resist teeth brushing. Finger brushes are small toothbrushes that fit on the dog owners finger. They often have soft, rubber projections instead of bristles.

If a dog resists the use of a finger brush, a warm washcloth can be used to wipe the dogs teeth. After the dog learns to relax when this is done, the dog owner may be able to start using a finger brush or childs soft toothbrush.

Dog toothpaste can be found at many pet stores and through pet supply retailers on the Internet. Toothpastes for humans can make a dog ill.

Some dog foods and dog treats are marketed as being good for a dogs teeth. Many of these food products are not proven to be effective. They should not be used as an alternative to proper dog dental care.

Dental dog bones and some rope toys are designed to improve the dental health of dogs. Daily teeth brushing is still recommended if these products are used.

Older dogs often develop considerable wearing down of the teeth. This may not cause any problems as it is a natural occurrence. If it becomes problematic, a veterinarian may recommend treatment.

Chihuahuas are a very sensitive breed. Due to the size of them they need to be taken care of very differently from other dogs. If trained well your Chihuahua can be a wonderful pet. If not trained properly, it can soon become a real terror. Knowing what you are in for is the best way to ensure your new addition is well taken care of and is raised correctly.

If you are planning on being away from home a lot, a Chihuahua may not suit your lifestyle. Chis require a lot of attention, love and training, so if you do not have the knowledge or the time, you might be looking at the wrong breed of dog. There are many important things you need to know before you consider owning a Chi.

Having two Chihuahuas myself, I know that to have well behaved dogs you need to train them. But they don't train like other dogs, Chis are super smart, and often do things when you turn your back for 2 seconds. They rarely get caught doing anything wrong, because they usually know your patterns. To avoid having Chihuahuas that are little terrors, it pays to know how to deal with your Chihuahuas behaviour and train them properly at the start.

There are many things out there in everyday life that can seriously harm your Chi. If you live in a climate that is too hot or too cold, this can shorten their life. Chis can suffer from low blood sugar levels, there are certain things that a Chi has to avoid otherwise it can put them into a coma. Knowing how to look after them is the best insurance against their life.

Knowledge is the key when it comes to owning a Chihuahua. They are precious little bundles who can easily become sick or even worse. As a Chi owner and lover my only suggestion is get the knowledge you need, then you are less likely to blame yourself if something was to happen to your precious Chihuahua.

Age and heredity can be factors in causing kidney failure in cat. A kidney failure in cat can be caused by fungal or bacterial infections. Overdoses of Vitamin D and rodent poison can do heavy damage to your cats kidneys, but there are a number of other everyday things around your home and yard that can lead to a kidney failure in cat.

While young cats may get kidney failure, senior cats, that is, cats around 5 years old and older, are prone to chronic renal failure. So be wary for the symptoms of a kidney failure in cat. Your cat has a better chance for a long life with you with an early diagnosis of a kidney failure in cat.

Recognizing the symptoms of a kidney failure in cat. Your cat will drink a lot of water. A lot. Then she will urinate massive amounts in a single session. At the same time she many stop eating or even begin vomiting. Her coat will loose its glossiness. She may hide away in a dark place and seem to be very sleepy and lethargic. She is not feeling very good at all.

Watch out for products made of Vitamin D like calcitriol and calcipotrien. Just a small amount of these can cause the calcium level to spike in your cat. The symptoms don't appear for about 24 hours, but your cat may well be on the road to a diagnosis of a kidney failure in cat.

Japanese showy lilies (Lilium speciosum and Lilium lancifolium), Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum), tiger lilies (Lilium tigrinum), rubrum and various day lilies (Hemerocallis species) can cause kidney failure in cats and even death. All parts of these plants, including the flowering parts are toxic. If your cat consumes as little as a single leaf you better both get on the road to the vet.

A couple of popular human remedy that can cause feline renal failure is ibuprofen or naproxen. These are also called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. In effect, the kidney failure in cats occurs because these drugs are poison to her kidneys. Cats are extremely sensitive to these drugs and can experience stomach ulcers along with the kidney damage.

If you feed your cat table scraps, lay off the onions. Onions contain thiosulfate compounds that damage the red blood cells in your cat. These damaged cells clump together and form a mass called Heinz bodies. These Heinz bodies destroy the red blood cells leading to anemia and kidney problems in cats.

Consider giving violets or Easter daisies instead of Easter lilies during the Spring holiday. Make sure you keep vitamins and drugs in the cabinet and not laying around for your cat to eat accidentally. Check the garage for open containers of antifreeze, rat poison and anything with arsenic in it.

How to build dog kennels is not difficult if the dog owner follows a few easy instructions. When building a dog kennel, the owner can create a plan for a dog kennel that will meet the needs of the owner and the dog.

Some dog owners have failed at providing adequate housing for their dogs. Using stacked crates or other makeshift materials can be unsafe for the dog or cause unsanitary conditions.

The local laws must be considered even when designing a homemade dog kennel. Some municipalities may have restrictions on building outdoor kennels. Therefore, it is best to consult the authorities before making plans to build so that the plans can be tailored to meet the local laws.

Step one for how to build a dog kennel is to plan the dimensions and materials for the dog kennel. When determining the optimal dimensions, the dog owner should consider the size of the dog and the size of the dog house to be included in the kennel.

For materials for the walls of the kennel, many dog owners use chain link fencing materials. Other fencing materials may be used.

The posts for the fencing material should be well secured. This can be done by sinking the posts into concrete.

For the floors of the dog kennel, some dog owners use concrete, wood, or the ground. The ground should only be used if the dog owner is sure that the dog will not dig under the walls of the dog kennel.

The floor of the kennel can be designed to be a slight slope. Therefore, the dog owner can use a hose to spray the floor of the kennel to clean it.

Ideally, kennels provide dogs with areas of shade and areas of direct sunlight. If no trees are near the desired location of the kennel, the dog owner can create a shaded area by including a partial roof in the kennel design.

The gate or door to the kennel should be secured by a metal latch. Using rope to tie the door shut can allow the dog to push it open, especially over time as the rope wears and becomes more elastic.

Thinking about buying Frontline for pets? One of the most important thing about using this or any other pet flea medication is making sure you administer it properly to your dog or cat.

Did you know that they make Frontline for pets in a lot of different varieties? You can customize your pet's flea medicine based mostly on:

* Pet's size ( weight ) ...

* Kind of Pet (canine or cat )

* And Even Application Strategy ( sprays versus drops )

It's crucial to select the right variety of Frontline for pets and not share among pets of different species or sizes.

For instance, don't use Frontline for dogs on your cats. Also, do not use Frontline for a 50-pound dog on a 15-pound dog. To do so could jeopardise your pets health and / or possibly be less effective.

Whenever using a chemical flea killer, even a well-known brand with the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, like Frontline and, it is important to read and FOLLOW the package instructions when you're applying the flea medicine to your pet.

Personally, I have used and favor the flea drops version of the Frontline pet meds, not the flea spray. I like that I am able to control where the medication goes so it's not spraying all over my home, into the air, or into my pet's face. However, if your dog has skin allergies or a grim flea infestation, it could be better to use Frontline flea spray. I'd check with a vet or, if you order online, you can talk with a pet pharmacist about what's right for your puppy or kitty.

Flea season lasts all year in many regions. If fleas are a difficulty where you reside, stock up on flea control - you can save more money when you order a larger amount at one time. Just ensure you read the instructions before using the product! Also, if it is's your very first time using Frontline flea control, you might want to reserve a smaller amount to test it and make sure your pet does not have a bad reaction.

Getting rid of fleas on your pet and in your house can be really challenging without using some sort of flea killer product. I know, I attempted to go the natural way, removing fleas from my dog by hand and it simply didn't work. I tried the cheap brands of flea medicine, and those didn't work either. What did work on my dog was Frontline flea control.

Once you eliminate the fleas, with the first batch, keep them in check with monthly applications of the flea control product. Beginning and stopping the flea control ( using it intermittently ) is likely to create "resistant" fleas which will eventually be more difficult to dispose of.

Keep your dog comfortable and healthy by helping him get rid of bugs on his skin. You do not need them biting your dog or getting into your home and biting you.

Frontline is the perfect solution for eliminating fleas on your pet safely, effectively, and fast.

If you have been considering which pet health insurance company is right for you, consider this: Today's veterinary medicine is able to treat an ever-growing list of serious pet ailments including surgeries for accidents and chemo-therapy for cancer. If your dog or cat were to fall ill, would you be able to pay for these costly medical procedures? Many families can not and that is why they are eager to find a pet health insurance company that can help them when the time comes so they don't end up having to say goodbye to their beloved pet for purely financial reasons.

Clearly, if you regard your pet as a family member, you don't want to ever be in the situation where deciding to save your pet's life is impossible due to financial constraints. Nor do you want to go broke paying for medical treatment. With so many pricey medical options these days, many people find themselves offered treatment at the vet for extending their pet's life, only to be in a position where they're not able to pay for it.

Medical Care For Pets Can Be Expensive

Most likely, you already have medical insurance for the human members of your family. In a similar vein, you want to have vet insurance for your pets. Pet health insurance has been around for years, and there are many pet health insurance companies to choose from. As medical care has become more expensive, you can't always expect to be able to give your pet the best treatment with out-of-pocket payments. With pet health insurance, you can be sure the top-of-the-line care is always available to your pet, without worrying that you won't be able to afford it.

When choosing pet care health insurance plans you need to look very carefully because today many insurance providers have a number of restrictions that you have to be aware of. The last thing you want is to be surprised by a big medical bill that you are responsible for because your insurance didn't cover it.

Before you sign on the dotted line with any policy, make sure you have read it through so you understand what you are getting. Talk to a customer service representative if you are unclear about what you are getting.

Think about what you are going to use your pet's veterinarian coverage for. If you plan to use it for routine care, you may end up paying quite a bit more for premiums. Reserving pet insurance for just the big emergency type expenses will help keep your costs down, but give you the peace of mind you're looking for when it comes to your dog's health.

Also, I hope this doesn't burst your bubble, but your pet has to be healthy before you can sign up for pet insurance. If you just got a diagnosis of feline leukemia for your cat, don't think that you're going to be able to sign up for pet insurance and have them cover those costs. You may be able to get an insurance policy of some kind, if your pet is already ill, but most likely it will note that any expenses related to the known condition are exempt from being reimbursed by the insurer.

If your pet does get seriously ill or injured, medical treatments can be very expensive. Pet health insurance allows you to affordably take care of your pet should the worst occur.

When it comes to spoiling your dog and helping them to get a good night's rest, there are a variety of dog bedding styles to choose from.

Choices For Winter Dog Bedding

A heated dog bed is the choice for winter so that your dog stays warm and toasty. There is a large assortment of styles that you can choose from such as the orthopedic heated beds with thick orthopedic foam to help cushion the joints and decrease pressure points, pillow-style beds with a heater inside, igloo style half-rounded heated pads to fit in igloo dog houses, heated, oval beds for small and toy-breed dogs, and heated kennel mats for use outside.

Things to consider when selecting a heated dog bedding:

Dual thermostats to ensure consistent temperature; 102 degrees is an optimal temperature for dogs. Look for a heated bed that provides a full-range, variable heat control. This allows you to adjust the heat from off to full temperature heat quickly and easily. Look for heated beds that maintain the surface temperature of the bed about 12 to 15 degrees above ambient air temperature. When your dog lies on the bed, the temperature warms to a cozy 102. Because the heater from the warmer insert only warms up when your dog is on the bed, it doesn't waste a lot of energy. Depending on the size of the bed, most heated beds use 6-13 watts. A removable heater is also recommended so that you can wash the bed and use it year-round without the heat. Read the product information vigilantly. Some heated beds are suitable and used for indoor use only, while other beds, such as heated kennel mats, are suitable for outside use.

Dog Bedding For Summer

If you live in a warmer climate with hot summer months, your pet may enjoy a durable aluminum framed pet bed that is like to a camping cot. These beds are raised just enough to circulate air from beneath to keep your pet cool but still low enough for them to climb onto. You can also place a blanket on top of the bed to create a cozy place for your pet to snuggle. These types of beds are lightweight and great in keeping your pet's odor from becoming immersed into your carpets.

For hot summer months you can select a cool dog bed. Cool dog beds are great as they can be filled with water and the internal structure will cool the water down. Cooling, by nature, has a therapeutic effect on a dog's health. It slows, relaxes and helps treat pain and swelling. This allows the pet to be more agile, limber and playful so it is a great bed for the young and older dog.

No matter what time of the year it is there will always be a type of dog bed that will be suitable for your dog just be sure that you measure your dog to purchase the correct the right size . There are three general rules of thumb when measuring up your dog for a bed.

Measure Your Pet Lying Down

Cool beds are another great option as they can be filled with water and the internal structure will cool the water down. The cooling nature has a therapeutic effect on a dog's health. It slows, relaxes and helps treat pain and swelling. This allows the pet to be more agile, limber and playful so it is a great bed for the young and older dog.

By ensuring you have picked the right size bed and one that suits the season your dog will be comfortable and happy.

GPS technology has come a long way in the past few years. It has also become much less expensive. Now the units are affordable for keeping track of pets that may wander away from home. Man's best friend is no longer helpless and lost when he leaves the yard.

Dogs are lost for many reasons. Whatever the reason, it often brings heartache to the families to which the pet belongs. Kids and sometimes Mom and Dad shed tears as a family member has gone missing and no one seems to know where he has gone. Posters with Fido's picture are placed around town and rewards are offered. The sad fact is that many times, Fido is never found. He is left to fend for himself, and may die due to hunger, injury or disease. Until now, with a GPS dog collar. With the touch of a button you can find Fido and bring him home again.

The idea is very easy; all you have to do is to attach a GPS receiver to your dog's collar. When the dog turns up missing, you activate the GPS system installed to your cell phone. The system sends a simple SMS to the dog GPS receiver through the mobile network. The dog's SIM card located on the receiver sends back the pup's location information to your cell phone. This process takes only seconds to complete. And even more, you can set a parameter in the GPS system settings, when the dog crosses that parameter, you get alerted.

There are two types of this kind of GPS systems. The first is bought with an expensive upfront cost but with no monthly fees. The second is with a cheap upfront cost but requires monthly fees. The cheap system only notifies you when the dog is far away.

You will find these devices available in many differing brand names. This allows you to choose the system that works best for you and fits in your budget.

There are many brand names and companies selling these devices. That is a good thing as customers will have the option to choose the best deal available that they can afford and suits them the best. The thing is there are two parties involved in developing and providing customers with the dog tracking systems.

Before purchasing a GPS dog collar, here are some factors to consider. The weight of the GPS unit should not hinder the dog since he or she will be wearing the unit at all times. It should be compact enough that the dog cannot reach the unit to chew on it rendering it useless. The accuracy of the unit is also very important since it will lead you to your dog.

We love our pets and treat them as part of the family. Why not make the investment to be sure that they are always safe and will be safely found.

While most dog owners rely on the convenience of manufactured dog food, many dog owners enjoy making their dogs food. A dog health food recipe can come in handy if the dog has a health problem like obesity or diabetes.

A dog health food recipe can be found on the Internet. Some dog health food recipes are designed specifically for dogs with health problems. Other dog food recipes are created to be a healthy alternative to commercial dog food for any dog.

One easy dog health food recipe is for lamb stew. The ingredients are: one pound lamb, three diced potatoes, two chopped celery sticks, two chopped carrots, two pints of chicken broth, and two tablespoons of olive oil.

After the meat is browned in the olive oil, add the chicken broth and allow to cook for forty-five minutes. The vegetables should be added and allowed to stew for forty-five more minutes. The stew should be allowed to cool before being served to the dog.

Lean ground beef or lean cuts of beef can be substituted for the lamb. Other ingredients can be added like corn or rice. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for use in the next day or two. The dog owner should not over-feed the dog even though this food is healthy.

The dog owner can make a cabbage roll dog health food recipe. The ingredients are four large cabbage leaves, one half cup of white rice, one fourth cup of plain yogurt, chicken broth, and one half cup of cooked, shredded chicken breast. The large vein should be removed from the cabbage leaves, then they should be boiled.

The other ingredients should be mixed for the cabbage roll filling. Divide the cabbage roll filling among the cabbage leaves. Roll up the cabbage leaves and place in a baking dish with chicken broth to cover the bottom of the baking dish and part of the cabbage rolls before baking for thirty minutes.

Some common dog health problems are preventable. Several health problems for dogs can have severe health consequences if not treated.

Fleas are often seen as a nuisance instead of a dog health problem. However, fleas can cause skin irritation that can become severe and infected. Fleas can carry parasites as well.

Fleas can be difficult to get rid of, especially if not treated promptly. Dog owners should carefully follow the directions when using flea products such as sprays and shampoo. Monthly applications of dog flea repellent may be beneficial.

In addition to fleas, heartworms are another parasitic dog health problem. A heartworm infestation and the treatment for heartworms can be fatal. Dog owners should discuss medications that prevent heartworms with the veterinarian.

Ear infections in dogs can be cause by ear mites or dirt and bacteria accumulating in the ears. Dogs with earflaps are most susceptible to ear infections. Cleaning the ears can help prevent ear infections.

Many common dog diseases are prevented by vaccines. A dog owner should discuss the recommended vaccination schedule for dogs with the veterinarian to make sure that the dog is protected from disease.

Parvo, distemper, rabies, and kennel cough are common dog diseases that can be prevented with vaccinations. The seriousness of these dog diseases shows how important dog vaccinations are.

One common dog health problem that is not prevented by vaccines is bloat. This potentially fatal condition is caused by the twisting of the stomach. Large dog breeds are prone to bloat. Dog owners should not let their dogs be active after eating.

Some skeletal conditions are common dog health problems. Some dog breeds, especially larger dogs, are prone to hip dysplasia. Other skeletal problems are common with some dog breeds such as spinal problems in Dachshunds.

Just like humans, dogs can develop dental problems when their dental health is not routinely addressed. Teeth brushing and veterinary dental visits can prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar that cause dental disease.

In 17th century, the Gypsies and tinkers are well-known to have with them in their travels a dog that's dependable and amusing. This dog is called a Lurcher and it is not a breed but rather just a type of dog. This dog resulted from the crossbreeding of several sightsounds with Greyhound, Terrier or Collie.

During this century, the Lurcher is most known as a hare, rabbit or other small animals poacher. In fact, its name is derived from the Roman word lur, which means "thief". Today, however, the Lurcher is best known as a dependable and fun-loving pet.

Usually, a Lurcher is made up of three fourths sighthound but this also varies depending on the way of breeding. The most common combination of the Lurcher, however, are Greyhound/Collie and Greyhound/Terrier. The most favored size and form of the Lurcher today is similar to a Greyhound.

Since there is no set type for the Lurcher, this dog can then grow as little as a Whippet or as big as a Deerhound. This dog's coat can be like the Greyhound which is short and smooth, longer and thicker like the Collie, or rough and broken like the Terrier. Gypsies, however, are said to have loved the short-haired Lurcher most.

The Lurcher has a smooth undercoat which thickens in the winter season and can be a heavy or light shedder depending on its inherited traits. The legs of this creature are long and straight, and the chest is deep that provides better lung capacity for endurance. There is no set color for this dog because it varies greatly according to the sighthound with which it was crossed.

There is no fixed temperament for the Lurcher too because it also varies depending on breeds used for crossing. Some Lurchers may have temperaments similar to a Greyhound and there are some that have temperaments like that of the herding breeds or terrier breeds. Most Lurchers, however, possess strong hunting instincts that they got mostly from the sighthhounds.

This dog loves to have fun, loves to be surrounded by loving people and likes to be affectionate itself. It is a docile dog that learns commands quickly and trains highly, too. This creature is very energetic therefore it will appreciate being taken in by a family that shares its love for activities.

Being confined in an apartment will not suit the Lurcher because it needs to be outside and be active often. It needs daily walks and running everyday that's why a house with a wide yard is ideal. This dog will always want to chase and catch small animals and run freely so keep him in a fenced area all the time.

No more fear of losing your dog, and you have the assurance of recovering it even when it is stolen. Just read on and know more about it.

GPS when expanded reads Global Positioning System. The dog GPS is a system that is electronically designed to monitor the movement of dogs. Many dog owners have faced the challenge of losing their dog or the dog may come back home late. You can easily locate the where about of your dog with the electronic tracker. The dog GPS consists of two parts; the GPS collar that is usually fastened to the dog, and a receiver that displays information for the dog parent or owner. There are various types of dog trackers in different sizes and prices. The Dog GPS produced earlier are bulky but more recent ones are lighter and portable.

Modern dog trackers have different mechanisms of operation. In some types, information or alerts sent from the collar attached to the dog are transmitted to the dog owner through GSM, fax or e-mail. In many others, a separate screen held by the dog owner displays information.

The Dog GPS has many advantages over the manual tracker, which was in use earlier. The manual tracker consists of a collar containing some vital information like, dog name, owner's name, and the contact information. In situations where, a particular dog strays to areas that people cannot see it, the manual tracker is no longer useful.

The dog GPS will send alerts indicating the geographical location of the dog. When your dog goes astray beyond the stipulated boundary, the alerts will enable you to know on time. You can then follow the data to track the direction of the dog. You now know where to go and find your dog.

The dog GPS also allows you to know the places your dog visited when it comes back. This is interesting, as it will give you information on the activities of your dog. Dogs could display certain habits such as visiting a particular place more often. Dogs do this either in connection with food availability or a companion dog is present.

The Garmin is an example of Dog GPS. It is designed in such a way that it does not need GSM to work. It can work anywhere on earth and in places which do not have GSM coverage. It does not also require monthly payment or additional communication fees. Some have special advantages. With Some you can set up a GPS fence which makes the device to produce audible alarm whenever your dog goes beyond the defined perimeter. It includes an LCD screen which displays information about your dog's location, direction and velocity. It does not require installation and it can track up to three dogs at a time.

The Gamin Astro dog GPS is another example. This one works differently from the Romeo tracker in that information from the dog to the dog owner is transmitted through radio signals. It is made up of a transmitter, the part attached to the dog (also called CD 20) and a portable colour screen GPS device which is held by hand. Firstly, the system has to be activated. This is done by taking them out doors and turning them on to acquire satellite signals. You can now attach the transmitter to your dog. This device can monitor as many as 10 dogs at a time.

The GPS technology has found application not only in tracking of dogs; it can also be used to track vehicles, animals and human beings including children.

The English Setter is a gun dog that is popularly known for being an elegant and excellent game bird setter. It is in the same family with the Irish Red and White Setters, Irish Setters, and Gordon Setters, which are excellent hunting breeds as well. This dog is named as setter because of its almost sitting position when it finds a game bird to be hunted.

This dog has flat, smooth and slightly wavy coat that drapes its body all over. This coat is mostly found speckled with a different color and this combination is referred to as a "belton". There are several beltons for this breed and they are the blue belton (white with black specks), orange belton (white with orange specks), lemon belton (white with orange flecks and nose is light), liver belton (white with liver flecks) and tricolor (blue or liver belton with tan markings on face, chest and legs).

The long hair of this dog covers its pendant ears, legs and tail like a fringe. Its velvety coat wraps around its body to emphasize its slim and elegant body. This coat is just in perfect thickness to allow the dog comfort whether in a cold or humid temperature.

There are two types of the English Setter and these are the hunting or field type and the bench or show type. The hunting type has a shorter coat which requires a little grooming while the show type has longer and more flowing coat that definitely requires more grooming. This dog is an average shedder and needs to be bathed or dry shampooed when necessary.

The English Setter is a gentle and sweet-natured breed that is excellent especially around children. It loves to please its master; it is calm and friendly that people call him a "gentleman by nature". This breed is very intelligent and can do tasks that other dogs can perform except maybe herding.

In Stanley Cohen's The Intelligence of Dogs, this breed ranks 37th and it is proven indeed that the working and obedience ability of this dog is above average. This dog is highly active and should be placed in the care of a family that has active tasks to do as well or better yet, this dog can do very well with a hunter for a master. This dog is suitable to live in a house that has an ample-sized backyard because this dog requires daily jog or brisk walk everyday.

This dog may be highly trainable but it is mischievous and strong-willed at times, too. Never apply harsh criticisms or negative reinforcements in training the English Setter because it is highly sensitive. It is best to reinforce this dog with positive remarks only or else, it will refrain from doing tasks for fear of displeasing the master.

This creature originally came from France in 1500s and ended up becoming popular in England during the 1800s. It supposedly came from crosses of Spanish Pointer, large Water Spaniel and Springer Spaniel. Edward Laverack and Purcell Llewelin are two separate breeders who are responsible for making the breed as beautiful as it is today and actually there are two varieties of this breed namely the Laverack and the Llewellin.

Nothing is more essential to good training than good health. And the foundation of good health is a good diet.

Depending on your budget you may or may not be able to feed your dog a larger proportion of fresh meat, but at least be prepared to spend enough for a good dry food. Here are a few things to look for...

All dog foods are labeled with the ingredients in order by proportion. That is, the ingredient with largest percentage is listed first, followed by the second and subsequently the rest of the ingredients.

One of the ingredients that you don't want for your dog, but found in many feed because they are cheap, are animal by products. When you see this mentioned on the label you might reconsider buying the brand. Higher quality brands might mention it on the label, but you'll find it normally at the bottom of the ingredient list.

By-Products Meals are animal parts like feathers, claws, blood that are not good for human consumption. You can find them in animal food, because it is legal to use them for animals, but they don't provide high quality energy and they don't attribute to a good health of your dog.

One way to see if your dog is on a healthy diet is by checking his coat. Especially long haired breeds will have shinier coats and shed a lot less hair, presuming they are bathed and combed regularly.

Some experts believe that the proper ratio of meat, vegetables and starch should be around 40%, 30%, 30% respectively.

Common meats used are chicken, lamb and beef. These provide readily digestible sources of protein - essential to healthy coats, muscles, etc.

Important for healthy bones are the vegetables that provide the vitamins and minerals. A good dog food can contain many vegetables, but especially carrots and squash are good examples of quality vegetables.

The best starch comes from brown or integral rice. Rice is an terrific carbohydrate, unlike other cereals like corn. Starch is broken down by the dogs stomach and provides energy and aids in cell repair.

Just like humans, some dogs have special diet needs. For example Golden Retrievers are sensitive to wheat products. And in general corn is the worst cereal you can find in a diet, because it is so hard to digest for dogs.

Avoid bad ingredients and when in doubt talk to your vet about the best diet for your dog. Especially when your dog has diarrhea, scratches a lot, or has flatulancy.

Some dogs will find dry dog food more enjoyable if prepared with a little water and microwaved for about 30 seconds. Feed dry is thought to add to teeth and gum hygiene.

Don't overdo it with the treats. The high fat content in treats can make your dog overweight. Manufacturers add fat to the treats, because your dog loves it. If you are training your dog and you give him more than a normal amount of treats, you might consider lowering his daily ratio of dry food.

The price difference between a supermarket food and a premium food can be high. But the investment in the higher quality brand probably compensates for lower veterinary bills and a much livelier dog.

The shininess of his coat, the clear and moist eyes and other less clear indicators will show you have chosen the right food. And, to finish off with a final remark. Isn't the health of your dog priceless?
