Turtles fall under the class reptiles. Turtles have a total of 313 species and 200 subspecies. Though turtles can't hear, the have other forms of defense like their shell that helps in thermoregulation. The turtles mostly live in hot and sultry areas, and many of them are close to becoming extinct.
Can land turtle be more interesting companion than a water turtle? Many people decide on the basis of the cost. But it is not a good criterion to judge. They acknowledged their error later. A lot of those people now prefer the water turtles as better pets then the land turtles. Some turtles can give the dogs a tough competition. They have been known to respond to their owners and do everything what you want a pet to do.
It takes expert knowledge to discern the male from the female turtle. The shape of the shell of the male differs from that of the female in that it is convex, but that of the female is concave. The sex can also be identified by looking at their claws. The male has relatively longer claws than the female and the female has curved claws unlike the male which has curved claws.
A temperature of 30 to 32 degree Celsius should be maintained during the day time inside the aquarium. At night a temperature of around 5 to 10 degree Celsius is suitable during autumn and spring. You can also use sun beds for the water turtles.
The owners need to provide them the food they are used to consuming in their natural habitats. Shrimp, liver, insects etc will make them feel at home. If you want to include plants in their diet, then go with water hyacinth and watercress as they have high content of Phosphorous and Calcium. You can also drop crushed shells for extra nourishment.
Turtles have a body temperature much lower than ours. Hence, they can laze around in the sun and then cool down in water. They can survive on much lesser energy than human beings. So , unlike us , they don't need to eat every day. The turtles have proven to be adorable pets if they are well looked after.

There are all types of amphibians. Beyond frogs there are axolotls, newts, and more. Once you have seen a few amphibians in your local pet store you will know that they are some of the most colorful creatures out there. This makes them great to watch, and you can also select colorful and attractive plants for their vivariums.
Amphibians were on planet earth before any humans, and in fact before any reptiles, birds or mammals. They truly are the link between man and the creatures of the ocean. Amphi is the Greek word for life, and bios is the Greek word for both. Amphibians derived their name from the fact that the can live on both land and water. Amphibians have two stages to their life cycle - the first in the water, and the second during which they spend more time on land.
Amphibians slough their skin from time to time, and usually then eat it. Their skin comes in a remarkable array of colors, in order to ward off predators, and for the purpose of camouflage. Another strange fact about amphibians is that they are ectotherms. This means that they rely on the external environment in order to regulate their body temperatures. These external temperatures can be recreated in the terrarium by using heat lamps or heat maps. Exotic pets need thoughtful care.
One thing that you may remember from a school science class is that amphibians are vertebrates with a full skeleton. They even have toe bones. They do have teeth, but these are to hold the prey before it is swallowed rather than to chew. The skeleton helps protect the internal organs of the amphibian.
Amphibian reproduction is a hit and miss affair: of the thousands of jelly-coated eggs that are laid in the water, and on the leaves overhanging the water, only a handful will ever make it to the next stage of the life cycle. Often this is less than one percent. The reason is that amphibian eggs are a good source of food for predators.
These are just a few basic pieces of information about these exotic pet amphibians. You will learn more if you decide to keep them. One final interesting fact is that they both breath and drink through their skin. So make sure you provide them with good quality water as this water-permeable skin makes them very sensitive to their environment.

The carpet python (Morelia spilotes variegata) are so called because they look like oriental rugs, well at least until the start sliding across your floor that is. They can grow up to a massive seventeen feet, and can be found throughout Australia and New Guinea. By python standards they are medium-sized; larger than a green tree python, but only half the size of the longest snake in the world, which is the reticulated Python (Python reticularis) that can reach an amazing thirty three feet in length.
If you desperately want the carpet python because of its stunning patterns, but can only manage a smaller snake, then Morelia spilotes spilotes could be the species for you. Also known as the diamond python, this is a species that is closely related to the carpet python and is distinguished by its beautiful diamond patterns.
A vivarium for the carpet python should be kept at temperatures between twenty three and thirty degrees centigrade. In their native habitat they as happy climbing trees as they are burrowing so you should provide some good quality climbing branches. They won't be climbing as much as a green tree python, but they will enjoy climbing nonetheless. A carpet python is just as likely to be found in woodland as a desert so that gives you a lot of latitude in setting up a vivarium.
An important consideration with a carpet python is that they are not that easy to handle as adults. They tend to move around a lot and wrap themselves around any loose objects once they are out of the vivarium. However, it is important that you handle them when they are young so they get used to human contact. Once they are adults you can still handle them if you have the patience! These legless, oily, reptiles have all their organs running down one side of their body.
To summarize we can say that carpet pythons make good pets, but you must be sure that you have enough space, and are happy with a pet that you cannot easily handle. Even feeding is easy as they will eat virtually any mammal and are far less fussy than some other snakes. They may still require that you twizzle dead rodents to make them look like an appetizing meal though!
Green tree pythons are another alternative to the carpet python, and I would suggest that they are more stunning. When you are getting a chinchilla, the cage and its contents will be an important part of keeping your pet healthy and safe. A chinchilla can overheat very easily so it is important that the chinchilla cage not be in direct sunlight or a place that gets too warm.
Chinchillas like space. If the cage selected is tall and has a 24" x 24" floor, your pet will be comfortable. Remember that if you add toys and a wheel, you will need a larger floor space and more height. Your chinchilla cage needs to be made of wire. A chinchilla will nibble on everything and plastic, vinyl, and small parts are not healthy for this pet.
Put shelves and ladders in the cage for the chinchilla to climb on. This will be how they get most of their exercise and they like to climb. Be sure to put thin wood planks on floors and shelves, if they are made of wire, so that the feet of your pet will be protected.
Using wood shavings or newspaper to line the cage will help to keep it clean and allow your pet to nest. Adding a wooden nesting box that has newspaper in it will also be a good idea. Chinchillas like to have places that they can hide when they want. The best shavings to use for your pet will be made of aspen.
Bowls in the cage will not be effective for the chinchilla. If bowls are used, they need to be very heavy and cleaned on a daily basis. By using a glass bottle that has a chew guard and feed hopper that attaches to the cage you will be able to keep food and water clean for your pet.
Chinchillas need a pumice block to keep their teeth the right length. In the wild they chew on stones to keep their teeth ground down. You will need to give them a way to do this in their cage.
Find out why it's especially important to have a large chinchilla cage if you have two chinchillas, and things to be aware of when making your chinchilla cage plans. Stick insects have the military skills of camouflage and defense. These skills include giving of defensive odors, spraying harmful chemicals, mimicking branches, changing color, and faking their own deaths. However, even with this array of defenses from their predators the stick insect is vulnerable to attack from them, and because of this they rarely gather sufficient numbers for a plague.
However, they have had their moments, and in'63 a plague of stick insects descended on 650 square miles of forest in Southern Australia and stripped it bare. There have also been similar cases in the Pacific where coconut plantations have proved to be rich breeding grounds.
A number of factors have to align in order for something as rare as a stick insect plague to occur. Multiple years without forest fires is needed so that the flora and fauna is plentiful enough to support population growth. In addition to this a consistent temperature over many years to enable the plague population to grow. This lack of fires not only ensures plant growth, but also means that stick insects do not die in fires.
Introduction of a species of stick insect into a habitat that they do not naturally occur in can cause the changes in population levels that leads to plagues. As a pet owner you must be responsible enough not to allow your stick insect to escape and threaten a delicately balanced ecosystem.
So in conclusion we can say that whilst stick insects face threats from rats, birds, mammals, and even wasps, they can sometimes rise up, form a plague, and cause significant damage. So next time you are at home looking at you delicate pet in its vivarium, just remember what a devastating creature it can be when it is unleashed in a plague.

So you've purchased your chinchilla and you're excited to get him or her home, but first you need a good house for your pet. Chinchilla cages can be purchased in a lot of different styles and sizes.
When you begin looking for a cage, search for one that is metal because chinchillas like to chew on things and he or she wont be able to chew through the metal.
Pick a house with a bottom tray for easier cleaning. Line it with news paper and clean it regularly. You'll also need to make sure that your pets new home has a lot of room for play and exercise. Chinchillas like to jump and play.
When you get your cage set up, you'll want to put it in a place where there is no wind and it should be out of direct sunlight. Chinchilla cages should be placed out of the sun because chinchillas have long, thick hair and they like the temperature to be approximately between 60 and 75 degrees.
Now that you have found a perfect location for your new cage, its time to put in some fun and accessories. Chinchillas like to hide, so maybe you can add a hideaway box or some tunnels. You should add some shelves for jumping and lounging.
A great addition to all chinchilla cages is an exercise wheel. Its good for your pets well being and it will keep your friend from getting bored. A hammock is another nice addition for lounging and naps. There are more than enough of different things to add. Try a few of these and just see what your pet enjoys the best.
Your chinchilla needs to stay clean and they like to take baths. They don't like to get wet, so chinchilla dust keeps them clean and keeps their hair soft. When you get ready to get a dust bath house, find one that attaches to the inside of the cage. You will probably want to find one that detaches and is enclosed. You want one that is enclosed so your pet can bathe without getting dust in the air.

In order to provide a safe environment for your baby ferret, he will need a home of his own. Ferrets like lots of space, so it's important to provide a spacious cage. You should also take care to line the cage with a non-porous material to make cleaning a breeze.
A hard material such as linoleum is great because of its ease in cleanup. You want to make sure that the baby ferret's toes won't get trapped in the grill of the cage, and linoleum will prevent that. The cage will need to be cleaned often, because ferrets have sweat glands with a distinctive odor.
If the linen for sleeping is not cleaned at least once a week, it may become too smelly for the owner. Even if the ferret is given a bath, the stink would be back on its fur if the bedding is not washed thoroughly.
Baby ferrets can be trained very early on to use a litter box. You want to litter train them as soon as possible to avoid any waste management problems. It's a pretty simple process of putting litter boxes in areas that both the ferret and the owner will find convenient.
Once they are introduced in a specific spot, it should be permanent. If the owner would keep on moving the litter box, the ferret might have a hard time remembering where to go when they need to.
Introducing baby ferrets to their litter boxes is as simple as putting a small amount of waste in the litter box. After that, their instincts would tell them of what to do. It would also be ideal if the litter box is not completely cleaned or the ferret would be confused.
Ferrets are so much fun because they just love to play. Baby ferrets need a lot of regular exercise, so you should take them out of their cage to play at least twice a day, more whenever you're able. There are lots of ferret toys that you can buy to amuse them.
Always carefully examine the toys that you provide to your ferret. You should stay away from toys that are made out of materials such as rubber, fabric or latex. Because ferrets like to chew on their toys, you wouldn't want your ferret accidentally eating a piece of latex.
Ferrets just love to hide, and putting tunnels both inside and outside of the cage would stimulate and excite your ferret. There are also quite a few ferret toys that make sounds. Baby ferrets are drawn to toys that make a noise of some type. You might also want to invest in a harness and leash so that you can take your ferret for a walk.
