How nice would it be if your puppy came home trained and ready to go? No chewing on furniture, shoes, and most importantly you! Lets not forget about the pee and poo all over the place. There is nothing like waking up in the middle of the night and stepping in a fresh batch of dog poo.

I felt it was important for me to write this article and share some of my experiences on how I came to train my dogs. I will share my trials and tribulations in hopes that you can avoid many of the pitfalls that I encountered along the way. I have wasted thousands of dollars on dog training schools, books, and videos. Some methods worked a little better than others, however none of the methods had any longevity.

While growing up we had a German Shepard named Wags. My father was the one who trained him, and I am telling you Wags could have been one of those dogs on television. As a puppy when Wags would pee or poo in the house dad would grab him by the fur on the back of his neck, rub his nose in it and toss him out the back door. It did not take Wags long to figure out he was not suppose to pee and poo in the house. My dad use to pretend that he was John Wayne and tell the dog to stick'em up, and he would stand on his back legs with his two front paws in the air as if he had his hand up. My dad would then say "BANG" and the dog would fall over and play dead. It was defiantly a dog that our family would never forget.

I eventually started a family of my own, and could not wait to add a family dog to my growing family. When it came to choosing a family dog I was out voted by my wife who lovingly let me know that we were getting a toy poodle. The poodle that she choose had to be spawn by the devil himself. This dog has never liked me for some reason, she would target my shoes to chew on, she would urinate on my clothing, the list goes on regarding the torture techniques that this demon dog would use to make my life miserable.

My wife thought it was all me, and all she cared about was what cute outfit she was going to dress the poodle up in today. In her mind obedience was not the important issue, as long as the dog accessories matched. Then the day that now pet owner ever wants to face hit our family like a ton of bricks. Our dog while playing with the kids bit one of them. We still do not know if it was intentional or accidental. Either way something had to be done. I took it upon myself to isolate the dog and start training it myself. Things were going great until my wife found out that I was training our dog the same way my dad use to. She went through the roof because she felt that my dads training method was inhuman. I had never seen my wife this outraged in my life, in fact I spent a few nights with my Snuggy on the couch. We decided to start researching puppy training classes - boy was I blown away by how much money it cost.

After doing months of research we finally found a puppy training class that we mutually agreed upon. Once the training was over and our little poodle was back home everything seemed to go well for a few months. Then what seemed like overnight the family dog was back up to her old ways. We repeated this process several times and the results was unsatisfactory to say the least.

After going the route of several so-called professional dog trainers we decided to take matters in our own hands. We spend several hundred dollars on dog training courses, puppy training classes, books, DVD's and the list goes on and on. The strange part is each of the courses did nothing but contradict the next course. Each course that we studied swore up and down that his or her method was the best ever. Do not get me wrong... A few of the techniques worked like a charm, while others were nothing more than a big fat waste of time.

My main problem with all of the dog training classes, courses or whatever you want to call it out their was they offered no guarantee. I believe if you are confident in your ability then you should offer some type of guarantee. For example if I sent my dog to your training school and three or four months later he or she returned to their normal demeanor give back a partial refund, a free bag of dog food - anything is better than nothing. Even when we purchased a book I often felt as if I had been robbed without a gun.

We decided to stop the madness and take matters into our own hands. My wife agreed to let me handle the training as long as it was not a cruel method such as the ones used by my father. I wish that I could tell you that everything went well immediately after making that decision, but it did not. After another few months I finally found a method that was extremely easy. In fact it was so easy that I I passed it along to family and friends who were also using it to train their puppies, dogs both young and old themselves.
