Any top dog trainer, skilled in dog obedience training techniques, knows that dogs value food. So much, that food treats are the absolute best motivators for dog training success. But, when that food becomes a bone of contention among dogs, or between a dog and a human, a food guarding situation has developed, and can be dangerous for dogs and humans alike.

Historically, food guarding was necessary for survival of wolf individuals in the wild. When a carcass was carried back to the pack, the wolves that fought for the right to eat earned the best, and the most, meat. Defending this right sprung from the fact that most wolves only got to eat every few days, so the opportunity to eat didn't arise often, and had to be seized. Today, there's an unlimited supply of kibble, but your dog might not grasp that concept without a little help.

The submissive dog might develop a food guarding habit, or eat her food in large gulps, to protect her meal from more dominant dogs, who feel that they have the right to horn in on lesser citizens' food. Conversely, dominant dogs might scarf food or develop a food guarding issue in response to the scroungers who circle, hoping to usurp the right to eat.

Food guarding might be perfectly natural, but, as with many dog behaviors that we feel the need to change with dog training, it's not ideal for modern day living. Prevention of this behavior, when your dog is young, with dog obedience training techniques, is the best course of action. Take these steps to prevent this potentially dangerous habit from developing:

When training puppy, feed him only a few pieces of food at once, picking up the bowl frequently and adding more food to it.

Stroke your puppy while he's eating.

Hold the food bowl in your hands while she's eating.

Command your puppy to sit before feeding him. Then, while he's eating, ask him to stop and sit again. Reward him with a piece of turkey or chicken, or anything that he prefers over what is in his food bowl.

Interrupt mealtime and ask your puppy to sit. Reward her. Now take a piece of steak or chicken and put it into her food bowl. Stir the contents with your hand. Allow her to continue eating.

Take the food bowl partway through her meal. Put her favorite meat treat into the bowl. Replace the bowl and allow her to finish eating.

Invite other members of the family, and visitors, to perform these exercises.

A top dog trainer, who has been in the business for more than a few years, will undoubtedly remember that as recently as within the past few decades, aggressively establishing dominance was considered a valid, and effective, method for training a dog.

The modern day dog owner is searching for a respectful dog human relationship, not the teetering, explosive link that's established with dominance dog training. This is due, in part, to the fairly recent findings of animal biologists and other professionals.

When a dog growls, barks, runs ahead of her owner, jumps on guests, or pulls on her leash, she's not necessarily vying for dominance. Most often, bad dog behavior is just that: bad dog behavior.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, AVSAB, has this to say about dominance based training: "Dominance is defined as a relationship between individual animals that is established by force or aggression and submission, to determine who has priority access to multiple resources such as food, preferred resting spots, and mates. Most undesirable behaviors in our pets are not related to priority access to resources; rather, they are due to accidental rewarding of the undesirable behavior."

For instance, if a dog is barking, his owner might play ball with him, yell at him, release him from his crate, or kick him. All of these responses are forms of attention, whether positive or negative, and will cement the barking behavior as acceptable in the mind of the dog.

Many times, dog owners are not familiar with the modern definition of effective dog obedience training techniques, so they start with aggressive dominance displays, like growling or alpha rolls. This starts a dangerous chain response, and will likely result in the eventual development of aggression in the dog.

Alpha rolls are good examples of how dominance dog training has gone awry. Watch a video of wolves interacting with one another. You'll notice that submissive members of the pack will often roll on their backs to show allegiance to the leader. The alpha members of the pack do not force those submissive dogs onto their backs, as humans do in the alpha roll technique. This dog training technique not only goes against dogs' natural instincts, but it initiates a pattern of aggressive behavior through bullying.

If you've observed, or been part of, a loving, respectful, human family, you'll understand that leadership is more effective than dominance. Wildlife biologists are changing their views of wolf pack dynamics; they now believe that packs are not unlike respectful human families. A functional human family has one or two leaders at its head, and the others respect the leader or leaders. This respect isn't stolen with abuse; it's earned through effective, positive leadership. Using this example, it's easy to understand why the AVSAB says that dominance and leadership are two different concepts, and that leadership is the more effective and humane approach when training a dog.

Establishing yourself as a leader, and getting respect from your dog, means using positive dog obedience training techniques, like crate training and clicker training. It's natural for your dog to want to jump, bark, bite, chew, and dig. But if you use positivity to reward good behavior, and replace bad behaviors with good ones, you can get your dog to walk on a leash, stop digging and chewing behaviors, and stop your dog from barking and jumping.

Clicker training and crate training, when implemented properly, are two examples of positive, leadership based dog training methods.
