Many dog owners wonder if you can make dog treats that include peanut butter. I imagine that this question is frequently asked because several people have become aware that nuts are not acceptable for dogs. It has been reported that many groups of nuts like Macadamia and walnuts are quite harmful.
Some problems with nuts include the levels of toxicity they can produce over time and the excessive phosphorus content which may cause kidney failure, bladder issues and even death. The same would hold true for chocolates including nuts.
There is important news for those of us that like to use peanut butter as an aid in administering medicine, rewarding our dogs with peanut butter dog treats or just sharing a bit on the tip of our finger. Peanuts are not really nuts! In fact, peanuts are really a species in the legume family (Fabaceae) to be specific. In other words, peanuts are really a type of bean!
Like many items is life, there is good and bad in most things. Initially you should feed only a small amount since dogs can have food allergies just like people. If you believe that your dog has an allergic reaction, stop feeding them peanut butter immediately. One of the best features of peanut butter is the fact that it is high in protein, just keep in mind that it is also high in calories. Organic brands can be evaluated if you are worried about preservatives and sugar.
To conclude, peanut butter has not been found to be bad to dogs. Since many products include other ingredients it makes sense to review the label. Although we think our dogs are almost human, they really can't make reliable decisions when it comes to their nutrition. My dogs are excited since they love peanut butter dog treats.

Dogs are easy to love, especially for people who like animals. Dogs seem to have unlimited reserves of energy and spend that energy unconditionally loving their owners. Who doesn't like that? Some people can't get as close to their dog, however, due to severe dog allergies. Certain dog allergies can rear their ugly heads and cause real problems. This forces some to find a quick fix, and they end up sending their dog to a new home. While technically this works, it's obviously not the ideal solution to the problem.
Dander (shed skin cells,) saliva, and urine; these are the main villains when discussing dog allergies. When people with sensitive immune systems come into contact with these allergens, reactions can occur. Don't worry about long haired dogs. It's a myth is that hairless dogs will not cause reactions anyway. Less allergens, in the case of skin cells, every dog with drool and urinate. And while annoying, it's good to know that most people will recognize dog allergy symptoms as normal allergy symptoms that they are used to anyway, such as red/itchy eyes, stopped up nose, shortness of breath, and rashes. Of course these are not any fun, but they are manageable.
A clean home is the best defense against dog allergies and allergens. Making a point to vacuum regularly helps, as does using furniture that is upholstered in leather. Changing your air filter to your AC unit will help reduce dander floating around in your house. And since fur can retain allergens, regular bathing is a good idea. Be sure to remember to wash your dog's bedding or cushions, or else anything you gained from giving the dog a bath will be lost quickly.
A much simpler way is to purchase allergen reduction products. Allerpet D for Dogs is an example of a shampoo that reduces the amount of dander in a dog without causing dryness of the skin. Decreasing dog allergies is as easy as adopting good management strategies!
An allergy specialist can give you additional advice as well. They can provide you with certain prescriptions and over the counter, that can mitigate the runny noses and itchy eyes. For reactions that are really bad, they can recommend and perform allergy shots, which are a good idea if you have bad allergies in general. Getting rid of your dog and sending it to another home should not be your first option.

The most important step in pet care lies first in mealtime, especially since the teacup yorkies stomach is extra temperamental. Most owners will tell you that many find foods exist on the market today that cater specifically for the breed. However, owners find that the care associated with yorkie mealtime is just as important to their pet's health and satisfaction.
Yorkies love to be stroked and encouraged during mealtime. This method is often recommended by top breeders, especially for young puppies. Teacup yorkies are very loyal to their owners and love to feel a part of the pack.
Yorkie food comes in many forms. You may want to mix or match your pet's food depending on many factors. Some examples are cost, availability, and pet preference.
Some canned foods contain all meat, but they are not complete. Others are mixtures of meat and grains. Such foods have been fortified with additional nutrients for a more complete and balanced diet.
Dog owners may want to serve dry food "as is" or mix it with warm water or broth. Or perhaps you'll choose to combine dry food with fresh or canned preparations. Either way, your yorkie will appreciate just a touch of variety without upsetting their regular diet.
You must help develop your teacup yorkie's eating habits, too. Try to serve your dog his meals at the same time each day and in the same location. He will get used to his daily routine and develop good eating habits.
Be sure to read the labels carefully before you make your dog food purchase. Most reputable pet food manufacturers list the ingredients and the nutritional content right on the can or package. Instructions are usually included so that you will know how much to feed your teacup yorkie to keep him thriving and in top condition.
Many teacup yorkie owners find supplements to be an additional preferential treatment for their pet. Liquid or powder vitamin and mineral supplements, or those in tablet form, are available. These supplements may be given if you need to feel certain that the diet is balanced.

Dog allergies to food can make a dog itch, scratch, and it cause much discomfort. All the reasons that this happens could be a mystery, but we can easily take a look at the symptoms, diagnosis the symptoms and get rid of the aggravating source in order to help our dog.
Food allergies have sometimes popped up in dogs around the age of 2 and in some, much later than this. These allergies do not discriminate either; many breeds can be affected. But just like ourselves, allergies can be very much related to sinus issues and contact allergens.
The most common allergies can come from wheat, soy, lamb, beef, chicken, fish, chicken eggs, and dairy. These symptoms can produce hair loss, scratching, biting on the skin and many types of infections.
The most common food allergies have been known to come from the following: chicken, dairy, lamb, beef, fish, chicken eggs, wheat, and soy. All of these ingredients are very common in most dog foods. The symptoms generally produce hair loss in dogs, scratching, biting on skin, ear infections, and skin infections.
Most of the irritation, the itchy feeling, typically occurs around the armpits, anus, forelegs, and paws. You need to consider that there could be many factors that go along with food allergies which are if you are dog actually responds to any steroid treatments or if he doesn't suffer all year long, then it probably is not a food allergy.
You want to make sure to rule out any dog allergy aggravators such as flea bit allergies or shampoos, etc. Once you rule out any aggravators you can begin testing the food that it eats. Pick one protein and one carbohydrate to test for the next 3 months with nothing but water and no treats. This is the only way, besides going to through expensive veterinarian testing. Once you narrow it down and are able to eliminate it, your dog will be much happier for it.

There are a lot of things you need to do to get ready for a new dog to enter your life. Besides getting them all their shots they need and an appointment with your local veterinarian you should also pick out the appropriate dog food for them. There are a lot of different types of dog food out there, so sometimes it can be really hard to select what might be right for your particular pet. Here are some tips to help out!
To start out you will want to consider what age your dog is. If you are getting a new puppy you will want to start out with a puppy chow. This type of dog food is generally smaller in size than regular dog food and it is softer for them. Puppies often have sensitive teeth, so this can really help them. Plus, puppies are often a bit overenthusiastic when they eat, so this makes choking less likely. There are a few different types of puppy chow on the market so you can look over each one and try them out to see which your puppy prefers.
If your dog is an older dog you will want to pick an advanced age dog food. Older dogs need slightly different nutrients and vitamins to remain healthy, which these foods can provide.
For a dog that is in the middle you can usually choose any type of dog food that they tolerate well. Here, flavor is often the biggest issue, so find something your dog likes.
Special situations, such as dog obesity, can also have a big impact on your dog food selection. Weight management dog foods can be a good first step towards helping your dog fight their weight issues. This type of dog food is great for getting your dog back on track to being healthy.
Some dog owners like to use wet food for their dogs especially smaller ones. Though wet dry food can be used well as a treat on top of dry food, it isn't really a necessity.
Don't forget to ask what sort of food your dog was on before you got it. Diet changes should be approached gradually to help your dog avoid digestion problems, especially since they're probably in a new place as well. By following these tips you will have an easier time getting the right dog food for your new friend.

Americans, including American dogs, are gaining more and more excess weight. They may live contentedly with their owners, but a lot of dogs are less active than they should be and eat less appropriate diets than dogs did only 10 to 20 years ago. We see more illness, more vet bills and dogs with much shorter life spans as well. Some people have begun putting their dogs on special diets. First they do the research to find out what their dog should be eating in the way of regular meals and dog treats. Once they know their dog information, they can make sure they are giving their dogs what they need.
Concerned owners have started to use their dog information to cook and/or bake their own dog food and snacks. Use caution! If you make your own dog food the wrong way, you can end up harming your dog more than helping them. For instance, there are certain meats and fats that your dog might have trouble digesting. There are some foods that are harmful to dogs and can cause illness. Some of these foods are chocolate, grapes and/or raisins, and dough. Like humans, dogs should never eat moldy food.
Some companies will make an all natural dog food for you. These companies have done the necessary research and they know your dog information, especially the vitamins and minerals your dog has to have to survive and be healthy. They are also aware of what foods your dog should avoid as they make him sick. Some companies, such as Flint River Ranch Dog Food, make human grade dog food, which means a person can eat it without becoming ill.
Today you can buy dog treats that are safe enough for people to eat. Specialist pet bakeries create these snacks and bake them just as if they were cookies or bread. Ask your pet bakery if you can bring your dog in for samples so you may buy the dog treats he loves most. Whatever you decide to feed your dog, make sure that you do your research to give your dog the best possible life. Plenty of water, rest, and exercise are all part of having a healthy pet and keeping him healthy. Remember that we are our pets' best friends and they need us to make wise decisions for them.
Family dogs in America, like their human counterparts, are becoming more obese and less healthy. This is primarily because of diet and decreased activity. Many people research dog information sources to learn what dogs need to eat and how much they should eat. If you are one of the people who want to make your own dog food at home, do the research carefully. If, however, this is not appealing to you, consider a provider such as flint river ranch dog food, which manufactures human grade dog food. Many safe dog treats are also available that are safe for humans to eat.

The dog is regarded as their best friend by many dog owners but they may not give much importance to the dog food. For dog information, many people turn to veterinarians. Some vets will recommend vitamin supplements or medications, but all that is required is to change your dog's diet as when your dog starts eating healthier, you may see improvements in its overall health.
You could also opt to make your own dog food. Flint River ranch dog food is also advisable as they manufacture their pet foods under rigorously controlled conditions. This is a top level dog food that will make your pet lick his bowl clean.
Many turn to their veterinarian for dog information and advice. Some vets will recommend vitamin supplements or medications. But this might not be necessary. It's possible that just a change to a healthier diet could make the difference in a dog's appearance, energy level and overall health. Lots of dog food products are made with leftover scraps from machines at the food processing plants. That not only sounds unappealing, it also is not the best choice for your dog's well-being.
There are alternatives for those dog owners that are seeking dog information regarding a healthy diet. One option is to make your own dog food. You can use the foods you prepare for yourself and your family. Simply cool the food to room temperature in the refrigerator before feeding it to your pet. However, there are several drawbacks to this arrangement.
The most important one is that unless you are well versed in dog information and nutrition, you will not be able to guarantee that your dog is getting the proper nutrients from your diet. Also, feeding an extra mouth at the table can be expensive and time consuming. It would be far preferable to discover a dog food product made with organic ingredients fit for human consumption. 1. Consult your veterinarian first. There are many canines that have special needs and some food might be particularly harmful to them. Get your dog a thorough check up to find out their present condition and prepare the necessary food and nutrients into their meals.
2. Research about food in relation to canines. There are a lot of food that are dangerous when ingested by animals?many of which are found right under our noses. 3. Some advocate the philosophy of feeding their dogs raw and all natural fare but for the purpose of safety, it is advisable to cook all meals thoroughly before serving. You can cook and prepare the food in advance and store them properly in the refrigerator for up to three days. The uncooked ingredients can be frozen until used.
4. Feed your pet a healthy mix of starch, meats and vegetables. You can put in 50% starch, 25% vegetables and 25% meat?check what ratio works best for your pet and go with that. Rice and potato are great sources of starch and any kind of meat will be good to give as long as you don?t give one particular kind too much (like liver or any kind of organ meat?too much may cause some problems). Use tomatoes, carrots, green beans and peas for his vegetable portions. Also, add chopped small pieces of fruits for the dog to snack on occasionally.
5. Pets have different lifestyles they adhere to. Usually it?s because of breed or as brought upon by their owner?s own way of life. As such, you will need to determine what the appropriate portion sized meals to give your dogs is. The more active canines would need high protein, frequent meals; and some will have to be monitored carefully because of weight and health issues. Check with your vet regarding this matter.
6. When transitioning the dog from store bought pet food to home made dog food, make sure that you do this slowly. Feed the canine the new dishes little by little and decrease his regular pet food gradually. If there is no adverse reaction to the new food, increase the home made fare until it becomes his standard meal.

All commercial pet food is regulated by the AAFCO. This agency sets the standards and does the testing on the ingredients that pet food manufacturers use in their food products. Because of the number of different food products and ingredients used, these standards can be somewhat vague. This gives manufacturers much leeway in meeting up to these standards. So having the AAFCO stamp of approval on a dog food label does not mean that the ingredients used to make that product are good for our dogs.
How then are we as consumers going to know what is the best dog food to serve our pets? Dog food labels provide us with much information. Some of it can be misleading. So if we want to feed our dogs with a nutritious meal, it is important for us to gain some knowledge in how to read and interpret what a label is really telling us.
Many of us are loyal to certain brands of dog food mostly because of the many marketing programs we have been subjected to. We think that we are buying a good product. However, many of us don't know that if a product name has an ingredient in its name (beef chow,) then 95% of that products weight must be of that ingredient, if it is a dry food or 70% if it is a wet food product. If the label mentions the word dinner or formula (chicken dinner,) then 25% of the weight of that product must be of that ingredient.
The ingredients of a particular dog food product are listed by weight in descending order. So if we were to read the ingredients of say a "chicken dinner" product, then by the percentages mentioned above, the chicken is only 1/4 of the product and therefore probably not the main ingredient. The main ingredients are more likely to be corn and bone meal. Both are undesirable as main ingredients and are mostly found in generic or discounted brands.
Most often times the main ingredient is never mentioned in the product name. We will see words like flavored like in "beef flavored." Products using this type of labeling are not required to have a certain percentage of the mentioned ingredient. Premium is another word we see on labels. Manufacturers of premium dog food maintain a strict following to the AAFCO standards and are products that we can rely on being nutritious. "Natural" is another word used on labels. It just means that this product contains no preservatives or artificial ingredients.
One of the best ways to find a good quality dog food product when checking out the list of ingredients is to identify the first fat ingredient source. Many times we will see on the ingredient list items such as beef fat or chicken fat. The ingredients listed prior to the fat source are the product's main ingredients. The more ingredients listed the lower quality of the food product. The items listed after the fat source are just fillers and flavorings used to enhance the product.
If we are feeding our dogs a commercial dog food brand, then the most important thing that we can do as a dog owner is to learn to read dog food labels. When reading through the list of ingredients if we come across an item that doesn't sound like something we would like to eat, then we should think twice about feeding it to our dogs. Let us take a little extra time to learn what we are really feeding our dogs.
As dog owners we are in total control when it comes to feeding our dogs. Knowing what the best dog food is, what are the right dog food ingredients and what dog food nutrition they provide can sometimes be confusing. Homemade dog food recipes have become much more popular in recent times. After the tainted dog food that caused many dogs to die, people have turned to making their own dog food using healthy and nutritious homemade recipes. Here are some things to think about if you are considering preparing your own dog's food.
A dog is a person's best friend. This is how most people treat their pet dogs. That is why they want only the best for their dogs, most especially when it comes to their food. Given that fact, convenience usually takes a backseat when dog nutrition is the subject. Most dog owners would sacrifice their time and effort just to make sure that they give their pet dogs' healthy food. Rather than buy ready made commercial food in the grocery, which ingredients they are not sure about, these dog owners would opt to have a homemade dog food prepared for their pets.
The choice to prepare home made dog food recipes might just save your pets life. It has been exposed that a large quantity of dog deaths have been caused by an ingestion of toxic substances contained in commercial dog food brands. Although, not all pet-food in our stores can be named as culprits, it's still more beneficial to be certain of what your family pet is taking in.
If you think making homemade dog food is a difficult chore, you're in for a surprise. Preparing your dog's meals at home can be just as easy as opening a can of his regular food. If you're skeptical, then you definitely want to keep reading. When you're done, you'll see how simple the task of making homemade dog food can be.
If you're looking to make homemade dog food on a budget, you can buy the ingredients that you need when they're on sale or substitute for some less expensive foods. There are also budget stores, membership warehouses, and bulk stores where you can do your shopping. Even these lower priced foods are healthier than the ingredients found in most commercial brand pet food.
Meat by-products, chemicals, preservatives, and fillers are common ingredients in many popular brands. It's been suggested that these kinds of nutritionally deficient components of your dog's meals can cause health problems, and disease. In fact, they could shorten your dog's life span by several years. Homemade meals, on the other hand, only have healthy, natural ingredients because you pick the recipes yourself.

High Quality, Nutritious, Healthy Dog Food is the Key to Your Dog's Long Term Good Health
Did you know that dog food you buy in a grocery store or pet supermarket is probably very low in nutritional value? Even if the food was somewhat nutritious when it was placed in the bag, that nutrition has deteriorated because the food is several months old by the time you purchase it at the store. So when you buy dog food in a store, you may be slowly killing your dog.
Think about our own health and nutrition. Eating fast food or other unhealthy food is not good for our own health. That type of food will lead to disease and a breakdown in our bodies over time.
It's no different for our dogs. An unhealthy diet will result in degenerative diseases and other health issues for them as well.
Veterinarians are treating dogs for heart disease, kidney failure, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. These ailments were much less prevalent before the introduction of commercial dog food.
You are probably like me. I want my dog to live a long, happy, and healthy life. He gives me unconditional love. He is completely dependent on me. I owe him the very best nutrition.
The picture of me and my dog, Romeo, is on a lot of the articles I write. He is 6 years old and just a mutt. He has been fed high quality, nutritious, healthy dog food ever since he was a little over one year old. I know I am biased, but he is the sweetest, healthiest, and happiest dog we have ever owned.
You possibly don't believe me when I say that, "you may be slowly killing your dog." I encourage you to read the article, "What's Really in Pet Food" which has been prepared by the Animal Protection Institute. You will find some "eye opening" information in this article.
According to this article, much of the food we give our dogs is "unfit for human consumption."
This includes both meat and grains. Is that what we want to feed our dogs - food that is unfit for human consumption?
Here's something to keep in mind. You can't rely on the ingredient label or the wording on the package to make your dog food selection. Just because the package describes the food as "high quality" or "premium," doesn't mean that it is a quality, nutritious, healthy dog food.
When you look at an ingredient label, it may appear that the bag contains a quality, nutritious, healthy dog food. But if the food is bought in a store, it could be 6-18 months old.
If you are told by a pet product store owner or employee that the food is fresh, they are probably being dishonest or don't know what they are talking about.
The dog food may be sold fairly soon after it arrives in the retail store. But the store owner has no control over how long the food has been in one or more warehouses. The nutritional value of the food is reduced as it ages because of heat, mold, bacteria, and many other reasons.
When selecting a quality, nutritious, healthy dog food to buy, you should consider the cooking method used. In general, the food should be cooked at low temperatures and for a short time. If not, the nutritional value of the food is destroyed.
Here are 4 recommendations in selecting a high quality, nutritious, healthy dog food:
1. The food should contain a high percentage of meat. Completely disregard any product that includes by-products.
Don't be concerned if you see chicken "meal" or fish "meal" as one of the ingredients. Chicken meal and fish meal are great ingredients as long as they comes from high quality chicken or fish.
For example, water is removed from the chicken to form chicken meal. So if you see "chicken meal" as the first item on the ingredient label, you know that there is a lot of chicken in the product. If "chicken" is listed as one of the top ingredients, it may be much lower on the list of ingredients when the water is removed. The manufacturer may be trying to mislead the consumer to think that chicken is one of the top ingredients.
2. Make sure that the food is very fresh. I have found that the best and freshest dog food comes from an online source that delivers a very fresh, nutritious, healthy dog food to your doorstep.
High quality chicken, chicken meal, fish, fish meal, lamb, and venison are excellent meat ingredients.
4. This is critical. Avoid any dog food that contains corn, wheat, artificial preservatives and colorings, steroids, and hormones.
Feeding your dog a high quality, nutritious, healthy dog food is critical to ensuring that your pet lives a long, healthy, and happy life. You are probably like me. I feel I owe that to my little dog.

Don't you consider your pets as part of the family and want to avoid giving her dangerous dog food? They are our friends and children. We wouldn't purposely feed tainted chow to our four-legged children.
Doesn't she deserve the best? When it comes to caring for our canine friends, all natural dog foods would seem the best option. However, if you're like I was, we tend to shop for our dog's food in grocery or chain stores.
This could be costly in terms of our pet's health and longevity.
We see the evidence all over the media concerning the dog food scares of some of the products we buy. It is wise to re-think buying these highly advertised dog chow brands.
Doing more research into the products we are feeding or best friends would be a smart move. Perhaps choosing natural dog foods instead and reading the labels on everything we get from the chain stores could secure our pets health.
When shopping for my two-legged family, I check the labels. If I can't even pronounce it or don't know what it is, I am not going to put it on the table. Watch the ingredient list on your pet's dog food label for the same things. If it makes you question at all what it is, don't put it in your dog's bowl.
In other words, if the ingredients on my baby's (dog baby, that is) food are something I would not eat then I'm not feeding it to her.
To keep our pets as healthy as possible, it is up to us as their parental units, to feed them all natural dog foods and avoid the dangerous dog food that lurks on the market.
We could actually help keep our dog around longer, even if for only a few months. However, with a bit of effort we might have them in our lives for years to come.

If you are like me, you love your pet and want the very best for them. We provide them with wonderful homes, groom them well and feed them with what we think are the best dog food in the market today. Well, the home and grooming is great; but did you know that homemade food may be a better alternative to most of the goods you see on grocery aisles? That?s right; give the best by giving homemade pet food to your beloved pet.
Let?s not make a mistake though - homemade dog food is not the scraps and things you see on the dinner plate when everyone else is done. Seed, stems and large pieces of hard bone should not be handed out to canines for their meals. If your family cuisine are of a healthy and low sodium fare, then it?s alright to give them these leftovers. Other than that, plan and prepare meals specifically for him.
Take care in avoiding certain kinds of food from the canines. We sometimes do not realize that some food in our cupboards and refrigerator are actually harmful to them. A few examples of these are cheese, spicy food, chocolate, grapes and ham. Put instead healthy grains such as oatmeal, rice and buckwheat in their meals. Include chopped up pieces of chicken, beef or liver. Make an effort to ensure that all meals are thoroughly washed and cooked before serving.
Fresh vegetables like carrots, broccoli, seaweed and bananas finely chopped and mashed will make for great additions to the meals you are preparing for him. The main purpose and goal with homemade pet food is to provide your dog with the right and appropriate nutrients that will make him as healthy as possible right? You can also read up on special supplements to fill in the essential vitamins he may not always get. As always, consult your vet first before proceeding with any diet changes.
It is recommended that dog owners do not combine serving homemade and processed meals to their pets. This will oftentimes lead to indigestion. If you have always given him certain pre-packed food but want to try nourishing him with homemade fare, do so slowly. Start by feeding him small bites and light snacks of the healthy nosh in between his regular fare. If the dog seems to have no untoward physical reactions to it, introduce the new food plan gradually. Decrease the amount of regular dog food and increase the volume of fresh food being provided.
The good news is, you don?t have to worry about the bother of preparing your dog?s food every day. What you can do is to take the healthy leftovers from the family dinner table the past few days and convert it to a week?s worth of tasty canine snacks. Change the menu frequently to lower the risk of your pet acquiring food allergies. Also, this will make mealtimes more interesting to the animal as well.
Not only will you be giving your pet a healthier lifestyle; you will also save more money when homemade dog food is prepared and planned well. Use the extra savings to buy doggie toys or other entertaining treats with. Now that?s something to wag your tail for!

Your dog's nutritional needs are different from ours. What we think is healthy, is not necessarily good for them. To keep you dog healthy, you will need to understand their particular needs and how to address them.
In order for your dog to grow, they need essential nutrients. Without these nutrients, your dog may experience poor health, stunted growth, shortened lifespan, and allergy symptoms.
Dogs, like any other animal, need five basic nutrients to survive: protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients provide different functions and are necessary to sustain the health and well-being of your pet.
Proteins consist of amino acids and are the building blocks of your dog's health. Although some of these amino acids can be synthesized by the dog, not all are. That is where your dog's food come into play - they must contain the essential amino acids that the dog cannot produce.
When choosing dog foods, ensure there is an adequate amount of protein to keep your dogs healthy. And the majority of the protein source needs to be from an animal source, not grain. But too much protein, however, can cause obesity as excess protein is converted to fat.
Fats are a very necessary nutrient for a healthy dog. Fats are what deliver fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) to cells. They are also necessary for proper kidney function and for a healthy coat. But just like with humans, it is the types of fats and amounts, that can cause or prevent health problems and obesity.
Carbohydrates are nutrients which are converted into energy for your dog. The best source of carbs for your dog are whole grains as they have the most nutrients still in them. Inferior dog foods will use grain by-products (left-over parts from other food processing) which tends to boost carb and protein ratios, but really has very little nutritional value for your dog. These grain by-products are also common allergy triggers for dogs. Look for minimal grain by-products in your dog food, and if your dog has allergies, stay away from common allergy triggers such as corn, wheat, and soy.
Vitamins and Minerals are the last area of necessary nutrients for your dog. These should be supplied naturally through your dog food. However, some dog foods will need to add in a lot of vitamins and minerals because they get destroyed in the manufacturing process of the food. But these vitamins and minerals will start to diminish in both quality and quantity the longer the bag of food is opened - so you won't get as much by the bottom of the bag as you do when you first open it. To ensure optimal health for your dog, you should provide a specially formulated vitamin supplement.

You therefore need to have a satisfactory amount of protein in your dog food to help your dogs grow and stay healthy. But too much protein can be a cause of obesity, as excess can be stored as fat, and has even been linked to temperament problems in dogs.
Fats are used to deliver other nutrients to the body as well as a source of energy. So much bad press about fats in diets has most of us thinking to avoid them as much as possible. But this is not true. Fats are necessary in diets, for both humans and their canine companions. It's the kind and amount of fat that can lead to health problems and obesity. Your dog needs the correct fats for proper kidney function, to transport fat-soluble vitamins to cells, and for a healthy skin and coat.
Carbohydrates are a main source of energy for your dog. But not all carbohydrates are created equal, and some are more common allergy triggers in sensitive dogs. Corn, wheat, and soy are common carb sources in dog food. By themselves, they are acceptable sources. However, if your dog is only getting by-products of these grains, they are not getting all the nutrients they need.
Vitamins and Minerals are needed to keep your dog healthy and almost all dog foods have added in vitamins and minerals. However, what most people don't realize is that the quality and quantity of these diminish as soon as the bag of dog food is opened. Specially formulated vitamin supplements are available for your dog and will ensure they get all the elemental vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health.

Premium dog foods are definitely better than your garden variety economy counterparts. But how do you tell the difference between the two? Is price the only indicator of how healthy the dog food is? Does a premium pet food have a different kind of label? How do you know what is premium?
The quality of the ingredients in the dog food is what differentiates a premium dog food from an economy one. Dog food companies will try to lure you in with great advertising about how great their food is for your dog. Many now show delicious pictures of food on the bags. Don't be fooled though. The only way to really tell a premium dog food is by looking at the dog food ingredients.
Before you purchase a premium dog food, check out the first two ingredients. Look at the actual ingredients listed on the ingredients label. They tell you a lot. Premium dog foods will have a meat listed first - dogs need animal proteins. Premium dog foods also use a better quality of grains.
Grains: Premium dog foods will use better grains (rice, oats) than economy foods (corn, soy, wheat). Why are these better? Because your dog can digest and metabolize the nutrients from these grains better. Grains are top ingredients in the economy dog foods, not in premium ones.
Some grains, such as soy, wheat, and corn, are also common sources for food allergies in dogs. When utilized as by-products, such as corn wheat gluten, they are nothing more than cheap fillers. Their main purpose is to fill up your dog's stomach so that he feels full. It's kind of like human junk food - fill your tummy with no nutrition.
Animal meat by-productsare another top 2 ingredient that just are not found in the best premium dog foods. Meat by-products are what is left from a slaughtered animal after all the human-grade meat has been removed - bones, feed, heat, lungs, brain, etc.
Meat by-products, like grain by-products, just do not have the quality and quantity of nutrients your dog needs. It is used as a cheap substitute for meat, with the dog food companies hoping pet owners don't really inquire about what a by-product is.
Premium dog foods almost always have a meat or meat meal as the first ingredient, unless it is a special need dog food. This is because dogs need animal protein - plain and simple. Meat by-products just don't cut it.
Will the price tell you if it is a premium dog food? Premium dog foods are not inexpensive - they just can't be, the quality ingredients used will cost more. Where the consumer needs to be careful is where some dog foods imply they are premium with their price and fancy advertising. If you want to know if you are looking at premium dog foods, you must read the ingredients.
And now there are even more types of dog food, like organic and all-natural. For more information about the different types of foods available for your dog and how to carefully choose the best premium dog foods for your beloved pet at the Healthy Dog Food blog. With the commercial pet food industry being under the gun in recent times, it can be hard for any of us to believe that we will not be seeing more pet food recalls in the near future. The sad truth is that the dog food we buy in the stores has the potential to cause extreme illness to our dogs.
These recalls weren't just small isolated cases - some of them were widespread and affected thousands of households.
Unfortunately many people didn't just see their dog get sick - thousands of dog owners lost their pets because of tainted dog food that they had purchased. It's not surprise that more and more people are starting to look into what exactly goes into commercial dog food.
Beyond tainted dog food, the large dog food companies have always been in the practice of providing food for dogs that is not healthy for our pets to begin with. This has always been a problem and still is today. There are hidden dangers in dog food many of us are not aware of.
The trend recently has been for us humans to eat better. The more nutritious the food is that we consume means we live healthier lives. Paying attention to diet and avoiding foods that have excessive fats and processed sugars, especially in the processed foods we buy, helps us to maintain bodies that are fit and trim.
However we often don't think twice about what we are feeding our dogs when we pick up a bag of food for them. However, the same theory applies to any animal - what you feed them has a direct impact on their health and quality of life.
Some of the ingredients in commercial dog food have no place in a dog's system. They are unreliable and extremely unhealthy.
As an example, corn gluten is a by-product that is found in dog foods. This is used because it is an incredibly cheap filler. However, not only is it an extremely poor source of protein, but it is one of the most common causes of allergies in dogs.
Another disturbing ingredient used in dog food is chicken by-product meal. Where this comes from is sickening - it is made up of chickens feet, intestines, necks etc. Again, it is an inexpensive ingredient that they are trying to claim is a source of protein. However, the protein is useless and this also has the potential to be tainted or toxic.
Soybean meal is also used as a protein source in dog food. The protein is a decent quality, however Soybean is also the number one allergy that dogs suffer from.
We could list several more ingredients, but I'm sure you get the point. The dog food you find in the stores is made up of such low quality ingredients that can put your dog's health at risk. The companies aren't looking to include the best ingredients for your pup - they just want to make as much money as they can.
It's amazing to see how much of a difference feeding your dog the right type of food can make. Your dog will be happier, healthier and even better behaved once you pay attention to their diet.
Does this mean that you can't ever use store-bought dog food? Of course not, but you absolutely must know what to look for. We included a link at the bottom of this article where you can find more information.
Once you understand the dangers of certain commercial dog food and which ingredients to avoid, it's incredibly easy to make sure your dog is being fed nothing but the best food possible. Not only will you have the happiest and healthiest dog on the block, but you might just save its life! All the best!

What are premium dog foods and are they really any better for my dog than your garden variety dog foods? How can you tell what a premium dog food is? Is it listed on the bag somewhere? Is it more expensive? What makes a premium dog food premium?
The main difference between premium and economy dog foods is the quality of the ingredients and the amount of actual nutrients digestible by your dog. Ignore any of the fancy wording or delicious looking pictures on the bag of food. Look, instead, at the dog food ingredients first.
Look at the first 2 ingredients to see if you are purchasing a premium dog food. Economy dog foods use a lot of low quality grains and meat by-products. Premium dog foods list an animal meat as the first ingredient.
Grains/Carbs: Dogs are better able to digest certain grains better than others. Rice, oats, lentils, and barley are all easily digestible for dogs. Corn, soy, and wheat are not. This means less nutrients for your dog. And since economy foods list grains as top ingredients, this means the dog food as a whole is less nutritional than premium dog foods.
Another problem with the type and quality of grains/carbs used by the economy dog foods is that they are common sources of food allergies for dogs. They are also usually the by-products of the grain, not the whole grain itself, and thus has virtually no nutritional value to your dog. The grains/carbs really turn out to be nothing more than a way to make your dog feel full.
A meat by-product is not a top 2 ingredient in premium dog foods. Meat by-product is just what is left over after all the usable meat has been removed. This includes the bones, head, intestines, and blood.
Again, like cheap grain by-products, meat by-products are just not an equal substitute for real animal meat for your dog. They are used to boost the protein percentages in the dog food and make pet owners feel like they are feeding their dogs animal meat.
Most premium dog food brands will have a animal meat or meat meal as the first ingredient. This means the major ingredient in the food is an actual animal protein which will have the most usable nutrients available for your dog.
Is price an indicator of premium dog foods? You certainly won't find any 'cheap' premium dog foods - quality ingredients cost more money. However, you will find some 'expensive' economy dog foods. These dog foods have high prices to make you think you are feeding a premium dog food, when in fact, all you are doing is increasing their profits. Always look at the ingredients list to see what you are paying for.
And now there are even more types of dog food, like organic and all-natural. There are literally hundreds of different types of dog food in the market, and almost all of them boast that they are a healthy dog food full of fresh meats. But are they? Only the dog food ingredients label can tell you how what kind of meat is actually in there - if you know how to read them.
First, what really constitutes a healthy dog food? The fact is a healthy food differs for each pet. Dogs may be allergic to certain ingredients, have different levels of activity, medical conditions, and different stages in life. All of these factor into what type of dog food is healthiest for your dog.
Now you must figure out the quality of the ingredients used. The proteins are a very important part of a good, quality dog food. They are also a good source of confusion when looking at the ingredients list. Animal proteins can be stated in different ways. Meat, meal, and by-product are the three main categories.
What is the difference between a Meat, Meal, and By-Product? An identified animal meat, chicken for example, means the clean flesh from a chicken. Meal is simply the ingredient that has be dehydrated and ground. So chicken meal is dehydrated, ground up chicken meat. By-product is what is left over after all the usable meat has been removed (like the neck, feet, intestines, etc.) Chicken by-product would be processed and ground up chicken necks, feet, and who really knows what else.
Animal vs. Animal Meal? Which one first? Although most people think that having an animal meat as the first ingredient is a good indicator of a quality dog food, it is very misleading. Yes, you want an identified meat in the first ingredient, but listing a specific meat meal is the best.
Ingredients must be listed in order of weight. Meat still has water in it, meat meal has been dehydrated. Therefore, one pound of meat meal will have more protein and nutrients in it than one pound of meat. When actually making the dog food, the meat will be dehydrated. If they listed the meat after this dehydration, it would fall much lower down the ingredient list.
What Does a Generic 'Meat' Mean? All animal meats must be identified on the label. If the food is from a specific animal, such as salmon, it will be stated as 'salmon'. If the food is from an animal class, like fish, then more than one type of that animal could be in the meat - like salmon, tuna, cod - and will labeled as 'fish'. A generic 'meat' or 'meat meal' is the absolute worse - it means the actual animal meat cannot be even identified. You could have some cow, goat, fish, geese, etc.
A general rule of thumb for a healthy dog food is if the animal source can't be identified, this is usually a good indicator to stay away from that dog food. 'Meat' is a definite clue for stay away! A class of meat, like poultry, although not as bad as just 'meat', still makes one question the source of the meat. A specific animal meat is best.

What you don't know could be bad for your dog, causing illness and even death. Most of us don't pay a lot of attention to what we feed our pets, trusting manufacturer labeling to be accurate and regulations to be followed. The truth is that there really aren't very many rules about what can and can't go into dog food.
Unfit For Consumption
Did you know that many different brands of dog food could contain unpleasant substances like hair, ligaments, organs, skin, nervous tissue, and meat from diseased animals? Or that spoiled meat and the bodies of euthanized zoo animals and pets could be used?
Most of even the good meat that ends up in dog and cat food is heavily processed, removing any nutritive value it once had. Ingredients like poultry broth, animal meal, and other nonspecific foods are unappealing and bad for our pets.
Animal meal, for instance, is what's left after fat and meat have been processed out of a carcass. What's left is dried and ground, resulting in a meal similar in texture to cornmeal. Broths are made up of processed carcasses from many different animal types, in just about any condition.
It's Legal!
Unfortunately, none of this is against the law. We're used to fairly good rules about what can and can't go into human food, and we're used to those laws being reasonably well enforced. The regulations about what can be put into pet food are much looser, and may not be enforced at all.
This means that just about anything might turn up in your dog's food, with labeling meaning little. Even the words "healthy and balanced" mean only that there's a particular ratio of protein and fat, as well as some added vitamins and minerals.
Preservatives and Additives
All of us have probably heard about the recent recalls due to melamine contamination. What you might not know is that this isn't the only additive in pet food that might cause illness or death. There are a number of preservatives used in pet food that cause real problems in humans who work with them, and could cause liver and kidney failure or cancer in your dog over time.
Not Just Cheap Foods
This is happening in cheap dog foods, but there's no way to tell if the expensive ones are affected, too. these pet foods are often higher in quality, but sometimes they're not. That means that even if your vet recommends it, you have to do your research.
Your Options
You have a number of choices when it comes to improving your pet's food. First is to learn how to read the labels. Ingredients that come first are there in bigger percentages, so look for named meats far up on the list instead of generic terms.
You can also learn about the additives and preservatives that can hurt your pets, and look for the foods with the lowest percentage of grains. There are also a number of excellent recipes out there that can help dedicated pet owners make their own foods. Just be sure to do something, since most foods are actually dangerous.

Most people have no idea how stressful it can be to have a dog that won't eat. To quickly get your dog eating again, you must first determine whether the problem of your dog not eating is physical or psychological.
Before diving into this problem, if you have a dog with a medical condition, or a puppy, pregnant dog, or nursing dog, you need to take them to the vet immediately. These dogs have certain nutritional requirements that are better if dealt with professionally.
Is this a sudden problem? First, is he listless, or in any type of pain? If so, take him to your vet immediately. If there are no apparent problems, just wait a day or two. Sometimes your dog gets into things that upset his stomach and he doesn't feel like eating. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water and the chance to got outside as needed. If after two days he still doesn't eat, take him to your vet as he may have an internal parasite problem.
If you have ruled out a physical problem that is keeping your dog from eating, then you've got a psychological problem on your hands. Keep these tips in mind when trying to get your dog to eat.
1. Does your dog get enough attention? Some dogs get lonely and bored if they don't get enough attention. When that happens, they will do anything to get attention from you. So they don't eat their dinner - and you freak out! Hey, the attention they desire. This soon develops into an eating problem for your dog. Start interacting with your pet more - play with him and take him on daily walks.
2. What if your dog is not trying to get attention, but is just plain spoiled? Then you need to step up and start acting like the master. Simply put his food bowl down and after 20 minutes pick it up and throw the food away. Do not give your dog any treats at any time during the day. Make his mealtime the only time he gets to eat. If he still has not eaten after 3 days of this, you may want to take him to the vet and make sure there are no physical problems.
3. What is your behavior during dinnertime? Do you watch your dog? Hover over him to see if he eats? If you are anxious about your dog not eating, you may be making him nervous. Your dog is more in tune with your feelings than you realize. You may be telling him to eat, but your dog can tell if you are afraid. You are afraid he won't eat, but all your dog knows is that you are afraid.
Give your dog his dinner, and leave. If he follows you instead of eating, put him in a room with his food and close the door. Do not return for 20 minutes - just let him be. If it doesn't work the first day, try again for a couple more days. Once he senses, or rather doesn't sense, your problems, he may be able to eat.
4. Did you ever think it might just be his dog food that he just doesn't like - plain and simple. If you are feeding an economy dog food, it is pretty much like junk food and fast food rolled into one for your pet. And he may be tired of it. His body needs more. Or there may be a certain ingredient in your current dog food that your dog is allergic to. Take a look at some super-premium or all-natural dog food alternatives. This may be what he needs to start eating again.
Try using these tips and you may solve your dog eating problems. Don't let your dog's dinnertime be a time of anxiety for you or your dog.

Have you ever looked at your dog food ingredients list? If you think it is hard to understand, you're not alone. But what you don't know about what is in your dog food could cause health problems for your dog. You only want the best for your pet, but his current dog food may actually be harming him.
Sometimes is seems like you need a degree to figure out all the ingredients in your dog food. What do all these terms mean? The dog food companies basically tell you not to worry about it - they will take care of your beloved pet. But consumers got a terrible wake-call with the massive pet food recalls over the last few years. They may know what is best for our dogs, but that is not what they are giving us. Thankfully, more organic and all-natural pet foods have been springing up, giving us healthier dog food choices.
Although some of the ingredients seem like a foreign language, one you learn some tips in reading through the label, you will be able to compare dog foods and figure out which one is healthiest for your dog.
1. Ingredients are listed by weight, by law. So the first 5 - 10 ingredients listed are the main ingredients in the dog food. Good ingredients will equal a good dog food.
2. Look for natural preservatives, such as vitamins E and C (also shown as tocopherols and ascorbic acid). Inferior dog foods still use BHT, BHA, and Ethoxyquin. These chemical preservatives have been banned from use in human food.
3. A trick some dog food companies use, legally, is to break up one ingredient into several "sub-ingredients," thus moving these ingredients lower in the ingredient list. This is especially true for inferior grains. For example, instead of seeing "corn" listed, you might see corn bran, corn gluten, and corn flour, even though they are all derived from corn. Now, another ingredient that weighs more than either of these sub-ingredients, will be listed before these.
4. We all want to see a meat listed as a top 2 ingredient. That way we know our pet will get the good protein he needs. But really, you want to see the meal of that meat listed instead. If a meat is listed by itself, then its weight is measured complete with liquid. That makes it very easy to put as a #1 or #2 ingredient. But when the food is actually processed, the liquid is removed, so weight-wise, it might actually fall down to #3 or #4. A meat meal is weighed after the meat has been dehydrated. So you get more of the animal protein and nutrients in the meat meal than you would just the meat.
The moral of the story? Learn to read the labels to see what you are actually feeding your dog. Your current dog food may be great, or it may be the worst thing for your dog. There has been a lot of concern over different kinds of dog food. Various recalls and consumer complaints have shown that not all commercially sold dog food are good for dogs. This has led a lot of people to consider giving their pets natural dog food. There are, however, a couple of things to keep in mind when choosing natural food for your dog.
* Understand Your Dog and His Food Needs
The first thing to keep in mind is that there are different forms of natural dog food. Raw and cooked meat and vegetables are usually understood as being natural, but commercially sold natural food is also in this category. Your job is to find out which type most fits the needs of your dog.
Not all dogs are same. Their nutritional requirements vary dependent on their different breeds and specific health conditions. You should always observe your dog's behavior and health condition, especially after changes in food. Consult your veterinarian with your observation and ask for his advice.
* Get Food Prepared for Your Dog
Many dog owners feel that they should be the ones preparing natural dog food for their pets. Again, this is only a good idea if you are fully aware of what exactly your dog needs and in what quantity. Some may serve raw meat while others feel that cooking meat and vegetables is a better idea. Heating and cooking can help destroy harmful bacteria that may have found their way into food.
You should also note that many human foods can be dangerous or even toxic to your dogs. Examples of such foods include chocolates, raisins, mushrooms and onions. You can make the list complete with your own research and observation. To play it safe, commercial brands of natural dog food are probably better choices over self-prepared natural dog food.
* Read What the Labels Say
Just like what you do with human food, you should always check what is on the lable when you purchase dog food. As a general rule, natural dog food should not have such ingredients as wheat and corn fillers, artificial coloring and flavoring, animal and plant by-products, as well as artificial preservatives. Many of dog's behavioral changes and health problems, such as gastrointestinal problem and malnutrion, can be attributed to these synthetic ingredients.
* Find Proteins and Nutrients for Your Dog
Dogs were built to be carnivorous so the bulk of their diet should remain protein-rich. The protein sources however should never be low-grade meat by-products. Your dog should be fed high quality lean meat and poultry.
Apart from protein, vitamins and minerals are also essential nutrients that should be found in natural dog food. You may choose to buy foods with fortified nutrients, or may feed your dog with vitamin-rich foods, such as squash, beans and peas.

If you own a dog and you love him very much, you may want to take some time to strengthen the relationship between you two. Playing is a great way of doing this. Especially playing fetch.
There are dogs that play fetch without having to go through training. Other dogs don't understand it when you're waving a ball around in their face. For this last group of dogs, a small investment of time and energy is required. Below, I describe three steps of training your dog to play fetch with you.
1. Your dog needs to pay attention to a ball that you want him to fetch. After all, if he's not paying attention, he'll never chase after it. In order to teach your doggy to become interested in a ball, praise him whenever he sniffs it or pays attention to it in any way. The objective is to teach your dog he will get a reward every time he follows the ball.
2. After your doggy learns paying attention to the ball, he needs to learn to pick it up. Should your doggy pick up the ball all by himself, simply continue petting and praising him. If your doggy doesn't pick up the ball by himself, smear some peanut butter or meat paste on there. Then, every time he picks up the ball, continue praising him and give him a dog treat.
3. After your dog knows how to follow a ball and pick it up, it's time that he learns he needs to take it back to you and drop it. You can do this by throwing the ball ten feet away until your dog follows it and then picks it up. Now you call him and show him a dog treat in your hand. This will make him run back to you with the ball still in his mouth. He will probably drop the ball in order to make place for the dog treat.
Once you have gone through this simple process a few times, you can do some tests to see if your doggy has gotten it. Toss the ball a short distance away and order your dog to fetch it. Keep increasing the distance with every time you toss the ball away. Once he gets it right, praise him and give him a dog treat.
If you stick to these simple training steps, your doggy should learn to play fetch in a matter of days or weeks. In time, your doggy will likely gain a better understanding of what playing fetch is all about. The game then becomes its own reward and you won't have to stock up on dog treats anymore.
Dog owners all over the world know how fantastic it is to have a dog around the house. Dogs are very loyal creatures that are good company. If you love your dog, chances are you are always looking for ways to get closer to him. A good way of doing this is to play fetch with him. So follow these guidelines and teach your dog how to play with you!

I started to get serious about health issues for dogs once mine started having them at the age of six. Instead of wasting time watching TV, lately, I have been studying ways to ensure my dogs have the longest lives possible.
For the ones that are familiar with my work and opinions, you will already know that I feel that commercial dog food is one of the main cause of health problems. For this reason I have become practically evangelical about the benefits of homemade dog food; I truly believe that it is the best dog food out there.
The fact is most people, even if they change to homemade food, they will need to add some type of commercial food. This is the reason why I dedicate as much time as I do to the topic of the best dog food.
During my research I come across many debates on different ingredients, and one such ingredient is meat by products. This could be listed as chicken, poultry, beef or just about any type of meat followed with the word by-product.
What does it contain and is it any good for your pet? If you really get into this matter, you will discover there are two different groups, one the feels that by-products are just fine, and the other that feels that they are unhealthy to feed your dog.
The answer is, it depends; we need to explore what it really means when we say there are poultry by-products.
The by-products taken from animals such as chicken and turkeys, consists of ground up, processed, and cleaned left over parts of the carcasses. These parts include the beaks, necks, feet, intestines, and other parts with exception of the feathers, though trace amounts may be present. The problem with "by-product" ingredients is that you don't know what you're actually getting and in what amount. Currently, no standard exists that specifies how many feet, quantity of intestines or makeup of nutritional content. Honestly, none of this is really fit for human consumption.
Some will debate that a wild dog will consume anything that is found on the by product ingredient list and this is why it is alright to give this to your dog. Although there is some truth to it, it is like saying that humans could eat from dumpsters and garbage cans if necessary.
Because I want the best possible nutrition for my dog, I'll avoid those foods that contain by-products and stick with the best dog food with natural ingredients.

With concerns about the nutritional value of the contents of commercial dog food, some dog owners opt to make their own dog food. Manufactured dog foods advertised as using natural dog food recipes are becoming common. Dog owners have more options for choosing the best dog food for their dogs.
Amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can be found in natural dog food recipes of some commercial dog foods. Many dog food manufacturers advertise that they use natural ingredients such as lamb and vegetables. The dog owner may want to check the list of ingredients or information on the manufacturers websites when choosing a healthy commercial dog food.
Some dog owners select commercial dog foods that have natural ingredients and are satisfied with their choice. For dog owners who are concerned about commercial dog foods, they may want to look for homemade dog food recipes. Homemade dog food can be similar to cooked food for people or can be part of a raw food diet.
There are numerous resources for natural dog food recipes on the Internet. Some natural dog food recipes utilize fresh vegetables and meats.
Some natural dog food recipes emphasize convenience and use ingredients that may already be present in the home such as meats and canned, fresh, or frozen vegetables. Some raw food diet recipes call for specialty ingredients like bone meal that the dog owner would have to order from a specialized company.
One natural dog food recipe is called meat and rice dinner. The dog owner cooks one half pound of ground meat. The meat can be ground chicken, ground turkey, ground beef, or ground pork. The meat should be cooked thoroughly.
The dog owner can choose a vegetable to be included in the meat and rice dinner. Suggested vegetables include carrots, potato, sweet potato, or green beans. The dog owner may use half a cup each of two vegetables.
Three to four cups of rice are included in the recipe. The ingredients are boiled together until the meat is cooked through and the vegetables are tender. The dog owner may want to cook the ground meat first to make sure it is thoroughly cooked.

Maybe the day will come when breeders, and pet stores will provide you with the equivalent of a Car Fax when you shop for a puppy, but that is not the case today. The safe bet is to buy from a Breeder, but it's no guarantee that the mother was properly fed and supplemented, so that her milk provided your puppy with a strong immune system. The importance of real food and supplements is just as likely to be overlooked by a Breeder as is by the majority of MDs and Veterinarians in this country.
Just how high is the risk when you buy from a Pet Store and Rescue Facility? Most of the animals sold in rescue facilities were poorly cared for. Feral females are often impregnated when they are quite young, and are often impregnated while caring for a litter! Feral dogs must scavenge for food, which usually is loaded with bacterium that causes diarrhea. Diarrhea quickly causes dehydration, and leads to more advanced illnesses, which compromises the milk the pups rely on to develop strong immune systems.
Since the mid-1980s, families and empty nesters have been buying Pet Store Puppies at a pace that has turned breeding facilities (puppy mills) into Big Business. Even though you may spend a lot of money for your new puppy, price is no guarantee of health! Most of these puppies come from Puppy Mills, where the living conditions are highly stressful to the mothers. This stress is passed genetically onto the puppies; affecting their disposition, personality and health. Mothers are often over bred, with no regard to replacing the nutrients lost to the prior litter. Puppy Mills also cut corners when it comes to food costs. Manufactured dog foods, despite label claims, are sorely lacking in nutritional value, and especially in human-grade animal protein that should make up the majority of a dogs diet.
The living conditions in the puppy mill are highly stressful, but that is not the end of a puppy's stress. Premature weaning compromises the puppys developing immune system. Puppies are transported like cargo, in all kinds of adverse weather conditions; often going days without light, food or water, and living in their own feces and urine. Arrival to the pet store is also stressful. If they acclimate at all, the stress starts all over again coming to your home.
Bringing Your Puppy Home No matter how healthy your puppy is, they will succumb to emotional stress; imagine the effect on a puppy with a weak immune system. New puppies experience stress on many levels; Meeting you, leaving the store, traveling and adjusting to your home, new people, new sounds, new smells, new food, other pets, and all the attention Any one of these can cause your puppy to have diarrhea. First time puppy owners often panic, and run to the vet, where they will likely come home with antibiotics and steroids, and told to withhold food and water for 24-48 hours. Thats rough for a full grown dog, let alone a puppy. Stress related diarrhea can be quickly, and safely resolved by administering soil-based probiotic organisms (SBOs), clinically to restore bacterial balance.
Everyone wants to know What is The Best Food to Feed a Puppy? To answer that question, you need to understand a few things: 90% of your puppys total immune system is located in their digestive system. By providing the nutrients and supplements any puppy needs, you can supercharge their immune system and thus prevent most health crisis from developing later in life. Reinforcing the need to supplement the digestive system throughout your dogs life; 80% of all chronic disease is caused by an unhealthy digestive system.
Manufactured dog food lacks human-grade animal protein and digestive supplements any dog needs to grow up healthy, and stay healthy. People who have switched to a meat-based diet report improvements in health, energy, and behavior: however, no matter what diet you choose, it needs to be supplemented with digestive enzymes, soil-based probiotic organisms (SBOs) and a complement of omega 3-6 oils; all are essential to develop and sustain a strong digestive/immune system.
Hopefully, this article is a wake-up call. Owning a puppy is a huge responsibility that should not be taken lightly. All one has to do is look around at the millions of sick pets and ask "What do they have in common?" The answer is manufactured dog food, and a lack of digestive aids needed to break food down into absorbable elements. The knowledge you need to make sure your puppy grows up to be healthy and happy, as well as live a full life is very simple.

Feeding your dog can be filled with stress.
Many dog owners take a zealous approach to how they feed their dog and can be very judgmental of other dog owners when the issue of a dog's food comes up.
The reality is that what you feed your dog is your own decision. It will be guided by how you have always fed your dogs and what you think is right for your current dog or dogs.
A dog's food is only one part of raising a healthy and happy dog, but it's a very important part, and worth some careful consideration.
How to Choose a Dog Food
If you go shopping for dog food, you quickly see that there are many options. There's premium dog food, low-cost dog food and so many dog food brands your head can spin.
Here are some tips for finding the correct dog food:
* Begin your search before you go the store. If you make your choice in the store, it could easily be the wrong one. * Ask friends and family for recommendations. If they use a particularly good dog food, consider that as one of your viable choices. * Ask your vet for a recommendation. Based on your dog's age and health, your vet may have a specific recommendation for your dog. * Remember that the best dog food for one dog isn't necessarily the best for another. Consider your own needs and budget before settling on a dog food choice. * Read dog food reviews. If they are reputable and published in well-known publications or web sites, you can generally trust them. * Remember that puppy dog food is a completely different beast than food you feed an older dog. Don't feed a puppy regular dog food, and don't feed an adult dog puppy dog food.
When looking at learning more about Best Dog Food, read as much as you can.
The health of your dog depends on it!
What About Homemade Dog Food?
Recently, the safety of pet food was questioned when many dogs became ill and died after eating commercial dog food. Some of the brands in question were even considered premium dog food brands, so it seemed that no brand was safe.
This safety scare led many people to decide to give their dog a homemade dog food diet. It's an excellent option if you have the time and money. Feeding a dog a homemade dog food diet can be expensive and somewhat time consuming, though it does get easier the longer you do it.
If you are thinking you might skip the dog food brands and go for the homemade dog food, consider these tips:
* Make sure the dog food you make is nutritionally balanced. Dogs need a good amount of carbohydrates, fat and protein. Do some reading ahead of time to make sure that you get just the right proportion of nutrients for your size and breed of dog. * Be willing to cook animal body parts that you might not consider desirable. Dogs can eat organs, necks and legs. In fact, many believe that one of the main advantages of a homemade dog food diet is that your dog can get more raw meat and bones, which many consider to be the ideal dog food diet. * Remember that if you start Fido on a homemade dog food diet, it can be hard to switch to a more traditional diet. You can't just put a bowl of kibble down because you are too tired and can't be bothered to make your dog's dinner. To that end, it's best to do a lot of preparation ahead of time so there are packages in the freezer you can pull out and thaw.
Conclusion
The best dog food diet for your dog is the diet that proves to be best for you. Depending on your budget and free time available, you might make a choice that's different to your neighbors. The key is to find dog food brands that are accessible, affordable and that feed your dog healthfully. Or make your own. It's truly your choice.

Cushings disease in dogs is also known as hyperadrenocorticism. Canine Cushings disease causes the dogs body to produce excessive amounts of corticosteroids. A common cause of canine Cushings disease is a tumor on the adrenal or pituitary gland.
Cushings disease in dogs causes high blood pressure, panting, increased urination, increased thirst, increased appetite, and patchy or uneven hair loss. The Cushing dogs skin is affected by the disease. The skin may develop calcified lumps, thinning, and may be prone to infection.
Blood tests are often used to diagnose Cushings disease in dogs. Treatments for Canine Cushings disease include medications and surgery to remove the tumor if that is the cause. Dogs diagnosed with Cushings disease have a shortened life expectancy even with treatment.
In addition to surgical treatment or other treatment suggested by the veterinarian, some dog owners feed their Cushings dogs a special diet. A diet for a Cushing's dog is high in protein and low in fat, fiber, and purine.
Hills Prescription i/d diet is formulated to treat gastrointestinal disorders, but it is also recommended for many other dog health problems including Cushings disease. Some experts suggest that the owner of a dog with Cushings disease avoid feeding the dog any manufactured food.
An alternative to commercial dog food is a raw food diet for Cushings dogs. The raw food diet for Cushings dogs should contain mostly raw meat and vegetables.
Many supplements and vitamins with antioxidants are marketed as treatment for Cushings disease, but a dog owner should consult the veterinarian before using these supplements. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and selenium are antioxidants that are thought to improve the negatively impact Cushings has on the immune system.
Some sources recommend foods high in potassium in a diet for Cushings dogs. Beans, broccoli, and potatoes with the skin are high in potassium. The dog should always have access to fresh water. The dogs water dish may need to be filled more often than usual.

Cushings disease, also called hyperadrenocorticism, causes the dogs body to produce excess corticosteroids. Tumors on the adrenal gland or pituitary gland are common causes of Cushings disease in dogs.
Canine Cushings disease symptoms are increased appetite and thirst, increased urination, patchy hair loss, high blood pressure, and panting. The dogs skin is affected by Cushings disease. This condition can cause calcified lumps, thinning of the skin, and makes the skin prone to infections.
For the diagnosis of Cushing disease, the veterinarian may perform blood tests. Medications or surgery to remove any tumors may be recommended for treatment of the disease. Treatment does not necessarily lengthen the dogs life, but may improve the quality of the dogs life.
A diet for a Cushing's dog may help with the symptoms of Cushings disease. Any diet for a dog with Cushings disease should be low fat, low fiber, low purine, and high protein.
Some sources refer to Hill's Prescription i/d diet as an ideal diet for a Cushing's dog. Even though the Hills Prescription i/d diet is formulated to treat gastrointestinal disorders, it is also used to treat many other dog health conditions.
Dog owners may try to help treat their dog with a raw food diet of a Cushings dog. The recommendations for the main ingredients of a raw food diet for a Cushings dog are raw meat and vegetables.
Other treatments for Canine Cushings disease are vitamins and supplements, but the dog owner should consult the veterinarian before giving them to the dog. Antioxidants like Vitamin E, selenium, and Vitamin C are sometimes used to boost the immune system of dogs with Cushings disease.
Foods that are high in Potassium are recommended for Cushings dogs. Examples of foods high in Potassium are potatoes with the skin, beans, and broccoli. The dog owner should provide a constant supply of fresh water.

The answer on how to serve your dog food may be a glaringly obvious one but if you are feeding all or part of your dogs food in a bowl, only small or medium dogs should eat with their bowl directly on the floor. Dogs of Labrador height or larger should be fed with their bowl at shoulder height and on a stand. This can aid the movement of the food to the dogs stomach and prevent gastric dilation.
Human beings have to chew thier food to get the digestive juices going while the dogs digestive juices do not start to flow until the food reaches the stomach. This is why dogs seem to gulp their food down and this in turn can leads to air entering the digestive system and causing dilation
With a large dog eating from a bowl in the floor the food has to travel upwards and so more air is taken in. This is probably the main reason why it is always better to feed your adult dog twice a day rather than give him one huge meal. Puppies of course are differant and need to be fed between 4 and 6 times a day to begin with. When the dog is living on a natural diet then he will eat this outside and also will usually lie down
With regard to giving your dog Tit bits, which of course they love just remember that dogs cannot digest refined sugar. Do not give them those nice little biscuits, or snack food made for human consumption. They love them too. Tit bits can be used for training exercises where they should be the branded type or small pieces of apple or cheese. A big nono is chocolate that is designed for humans and that goes for dark chocolate especially. It contains a substance called Theo bromine which is a bitter white crystalline alkaloid related to caffeine and Cocoa. Theobromine is a heart stimulant and depending on how much the dog has eaten and his size this could cause your dog serious problems. Theo bromine is also found in cocoa shell mulch, the type of mulch that is used for many pot plants so be aware that any potted plants that you buy may also present a real danger to your dog.
Lets look at how much we feed our dog
As a rough guide he should be having about 20 percent of his total target body weight in food over one week. To begin with use your common sense and either decrease or increase the amount depending on hos the puppy is growing or the dogs weight. Once a dog is fully grown you will have to level out the amounts and may have to reduce them.

Many dog owners have concerns about the ingredients and nutritional value of commercial dog food. The poor quality of the protein content and the presence of chemical preservatives are common problems with manufactured dog food.
While some dog owners make homemade dog food to make sure that their dogs are receiving healthy meals. Those who rely on the convenience of commercial dog foods may wonder which dog food on the market is the best.
The Internet has a lot of valuable information about the safety and nutritional value of commercial dog foods. Consumer reviews and manufacturers websites can answer dog owners questions about dog food.
Is commercial dog food safe? Is science diet bad dog food? What dog food ingredients should I look for? These are just a couple of the questions that dog owners may have.
Wet dog food often contains more protein than dry dog foods. The ingredients of wet, canned, dog food is thought to be slightly higher quality than dry dog food since there is much less processing involved in the production of canned dog food.
What type of protein is in dog food? The typical commercial dog food contains animal by-products. Animal by-products are the leftover parts of animals that are deemed unsuitable for human consumption. These could be the spleen, blood, bones, intestines, feet, and fat that would not be used in meat products for people.
The words on dog food labels can be misleading. If a dog food is called a lamb dinner, most people would assume that the dog food contains mostly lamb. However, the regulations only require that the dog food labeled as a dinner has at least twenty-five percent of its ingredients be that ingredient.
Science Diet pet foods are touted as a healthier pet food. Many of the ingredients in Science Diet dog foods are similar to other commercial dog foods. For specific questions regarding the contents of a particular brand of dog food, the dog owner can often find information on the ingredients on the manufacturers website.

While most dog owners rely on the convenience of manufactured dog food, many dog owners enjoy making their dogs food. A dog health food recipe can come in handy if the dog has a health problem like obesity or diabetes.
A dog health food recipe can be found on the Internet. Some dog health food recipes are designed specifically for dogs with health problems. Other dog food recipes are created to be a healthy alternative to commercial dog food for any dog.
One easy dog health food recipe is for lamb stew. The ingredients are: one pound lamb, three diced potatoes, two chopped celery sticks, two chopped carrots, two pints of chicken broth, and two tablespoons of olive oil.
After the meat is browned in the olive oil, add the chicken broth and allow to cook for forty-five minutes. The vegetables should be added and allowed to stew for forty-five more minutes. The stew should be allowed to cool before being served to the dog.
Lean ground beef or lean cuts of beef can be substituted for the lamb. Other ingredients can be added like corn or rice. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for use in the next day or two. The dog owner should not over-feed the dog even though this food is healthy.
The dog owner can make a cabbage roll dog health food recipe. The ingredients are four large cabbage leaves, one half cup of white rice, one fourth cup of plain yogurt, chicken broth, and one half cup of cooked, shredded chicken breast. The large vein should be removed from the cabbage leaves, then they should be boiled.
The other ingredients should be mixed for the cabbage roll filling. Divide the cabbage roll filling among the cabbage leaves. Roll up the cabbage leaves and place in a baking dish with chicken broth to cover the bottom of the baking dish and part of the cabbage rolls before baking for thirty minutes.

Do you consider big name dog food brands to be made with the best dog food ingredients? After studying the matter I've come to the conclusion that people are aware of a brand not because it's particularly healthy but because it's a brand that can afford some heavy advertising.
Your vet, unfortunately, does not have the best dog food available for your canine. I'll bet that 90% of Vets that sell dog food are selling Science Diet, yet it does not meet the requirements to make my top ten best dog food list.
I have done many hours of research trying to find out how to pick the best dog food, ever since my Beagle started having Seizures. I learned more about how to read a dog food label, and decipher what those ingredients really are then most people do for human food.
The problem was the more research I would do the deeper I would get into this ugly world of commercial dog foods.
It didn't take me long to figure out that I would have to learn some things about the Pet food industry in order to give my dogs the best dog food that's out there.
I have documented my findings in many articles about the pet food industry, which is virtually self-regulated, and about how the industry uses deceptive labeling language to deceive pet owners about true contents of pet food.
There is no law to assist us for selecting most suitable dog food apart from the law that makes it compulsory to mention the contents on label in descending order of weight of ingredients. If corn is the initial ingredient listed it is the largest component of the product regardless of what it is called.
Do yourself a favor and ignore the name on the bag and take a look at the ingredient list to determine what the food really is. After looking at the first few ingredients and rubbing your head, then you can look at the rest of the list which you'll have no clue what the word mean. Yet here I am telling you the label is still the best place to learn what is really in the food.
As you start to look at ingredient lists, your going to see healthy sounding ingredients like dried egg products. Don't be fooled this particular ingredient is anything but healthy. The only thing healthy in dried egg products is the word egg, and the last I checked you can't eat a word. Why do you want to feed your dog food with ingredients that need to be marked not fit for human consumption before sold? Another good one, is Chicken by-products, if you think this has anything to do with chicken you would serve your family, think again.
When you look at the listed ingredients of this item, you can figure out some of them, however it will be more difficult to identify the preservatives and vitamins as the names are less familiar.
I have learned what to look for in the best dog food on the market.
This has helped my weed through over 150 brands of dog food, and only 10 were good enough to make my top 10 best dog food list. When you compare the labels on these 10 to the brands your Vet are selling, you are going to start to take healthy feeding decisions out of the hands of your Vet and do it yourself.

You may have heard the stories of canned and boxed pet foods turning out to be dangerous leading to a recall of these types of products. Some dog owners who worry about pet food recalls are becoming quite skeptical about the quality of commercial dog food. To this extent they are looking for safe, nutritious foods for their dogs and opting to make home cooked dog food rather than buy commercial foods.
Making your pets food yourself is the best way to ensure that your best friend is getting a complete and balanced nourishment. Some dog foods are good, yet some are made with undesirable additives such as dyes, preservatives and fillers. However, if you make home cooked dog food, all it contains is the top quality meat, grains and vegetables you normally buy for your family at the market.
For years, dogs were fed almost exclusively from table scraps (which were often not a healthy option) or some other form of homemade dog food. Today, pet owners have become dependent on buying commercial dog food as it seems easier than preparing it. They would probably be very surprised to learn how easy and convenient it is to make your own home cooked dog food with the proper recipes.
Should you decide to prepare home cooked dog food, you may find it convenient to cook for your family and your dog at the same time. Human grade ingredients are used in the preparation of home cooked dog food recipes, so it is not necessary to use different dishes, pans or utensils when cooking for both. To save time, you may find it convenient to prepare batches of food in quantity, then freeze or refrigerate the extra portions.
Dont start preparing your dogs meals until you have consulted your vet. You should seek guidance as to which ingredients are right for your dog's breed and any other concerns. The doctor might even suggest that vitamin and/or mineral supplements be added to the home cooked dog food.
One of the best things you can do to safeguard the health, energy and vitality of your dog is to give them food that you've prepared for them yourself. Home cooked dog food that is formulated from special recipes provides much better nutritional value than many commercially available foods. And you might be surprised to discover just how easy and convenient it is to keep your dog healthy and happy by preparing food for him. Another issue that you may not have considered is that by making your pets food more digestible there will be less dog poop around the yard too.
You'll be happy to know that there are many home cooked dog food recipes available. And if you like cooking for your dog, you can make special treats for him as well. Not only will your dog love the special foods you make, you will have the peace of mind of knowing he is getting safe and healthy food.

I had just started my very first online offbeat cartoons and funny gifts venture, and stopped immediately my daily creative routine. Having grown up in rural Mississippi, I was used to the hot muggy afternoons which often brought tornadoes and rain. Thor was about twelve years old but was staring at the walls and not responding to my voice. He had been very active up until then. I got him to the veterinarian within ten minutes and the diagnosis was some rare ailment that dogs that age often get similar to seizures and he must be put down. I had been a dog lover and owner since age four. My intuition made me skeptical of the veterinarians conclusion instead I decided to keep Thor comfortable for a few days at home. Once Thor was resting I urgently began searching the Internet for alternative solutions and discovered Dr. Ian Billinghurst an Aussie author/vet/surgeon.
Dr. Ian Billinghurst was not easy to find. He is an Australian holistic/but also also practices traditional western medicine and surgery. He had just penned the controversial book titled Give Your Dog A Bone. It entailed a diet plan that was basically raw foods, bought at the grocery preferably organic. The special recipe contained lots of raw meaty bones and occasionally a blend of vegetables, raw burger, etc. in a blender. I discovered that raw organic tripe is one of the most perfect foods for domestic animals. The first time I fed Thor a raw chicken wing, I was mortified. I had heard all my life this was the surest way to kill a dog, but I was desperate. I could already see and feel his soul energy fading. Thor surprisingly took to this new diet, after not eating at all or drinking very much water for several days, and even then only by dropper. I switched his water to bottled spring and ordered herb tinctures and live flash-glanced vitamins with live minerals as well. He was devouring these raw foods, from hamburger to raw chicken to carrots to pears to romaine lettuce (and a blend of them all).
Slowly, very slowly, I could see him coming back to life. The biggest problem was the terrible odor and coloration of his stools and urine for the first month. Dr. Billinghurst warned me that would happen. The toxins of commercial pet food were leaving his system. One morning, about a month after beginning Thor on the B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods), Thor jumped on my bed, something he had never done prior to the diet. He was wagging his tail and ready to go out and play. He grabbed his leash and was ready for a walk. He didn't want a short walk but was willing to go with me my usual five miles. He kept up with me without even panting or having a shortness of breath. The vet had also advised me that in addition to the mystery disease, Thor also suffered from level two heart diseases. I started giving him the same herbs I was taking for my heart disease such as hawthorn berry and very hot cayenne tincture. I stopped all vaccinations as advised and bought homeopathic nosode vaccines ordered online from an only pet care service in California. His daily diet also consisted of fresh organic fruit and vegetables (and occasionally yogurt mixed in a blender. He loved it all and devoured every meal like a wolf in a hen house, whereas in the days of feeding him commercial dog food, even the best, he approached it with great disappointment and rarely finished a bowl (usually left it less than half-finished).
This should have been no surprise. According to Dr. Billinghurst and now other experts on the subject of the raw pet diet, dogs digestive systems have not evolved very much from their earlier days, before domestication, when they were still wolves, just as cat's systems had not since they were lions. Thor's energy level kept growing and growing as did his wanting to be near me and play at every given chance, whereas he used to mostly lay around and sleep during his pre-barf days. Up until age twenty, he continued to greatly enjoy our walks, usually three to five miles. It was only when he was about twenty one, that his phase two heart disease changed to phase four, and I knew that was dangerous. It was only then, almost a decade since his last vet visit, except for checkups, that I was forced to also use allopathic medicines, such as Lasix for his heart. I did so very hesitantly, as I was aware this type medicine would eventually hurt his liver and kidneys, which of course it did. In his final year, he had several near-death experiences in which I rushed him to the vet. I was already resolved that if he were in any kind of discomfort, or his quality of life was compromised, I would sadly have my best friend put down. The vet insisted he would not put him down. After all Thor had made three major comebacks at age twenty-two which he considered nothing less than a miracle. After a final try of a body flush, I could tell he was almost gone. I asked the vet what to do. He said to take him home, there was still a chance. I knew there was not. I could see his life and soul fading from his eyes. I knew him too well. He had been by my side, by my desk at home where I work, for a decade. I said I would take him home but I ordered a bottle of morphine which I administered around the clock as I slept on the floor cradling him during his final night. I had to put the morphine pill down his throat and set my alarm clock for every three hours so as to wake up and give him another. On the 6 am alarm, I opened the bottle to give Thor his pill, but his life-force was now gone. I looked down and saw there was no breath, no heartbeat. Even though I knew he was "in a better place" I cried for weeks. I looked closely at his face and he was still smiling. He always had a smile through life, and now it stayed with him even in death.
It was snowing heavily outside, icy, and it was hard to carry his almost forty pound body up the hill. He had a favorite hill behind our home where he chased birds, squirrels, eagles, chipmunks, rabbits and every animal imaginable. I built a small casket for him and a headstone. I had a shovel in the other hand. I lay him down in the casket, and begin digging, first through the snow and ice and finally through the hard dirt until the hole was about four feet deep. I lay him in it, said a prayer, and filled it cold and shivering and still crying. I carefully placed the coffin in the ground and filled it up. I placed the headstone. It's epitaph read, To Thor: A Special Dog Who Brought Only Joy & Happiness To All. Loved and missed more than he will ever know. Your best friend, Rick
Almost two years has passed since I buried Thor on that snowy day. I grieved much longer and was more intense than I had calculated lasting nearly half a year; and still think of him often. Friends were suggesting I go immediately to the shelter and adopt another. I could not do it then but now I know I will one day. It is after all what Thor would have wanted. I can only thank God, and thank Dr. Ian Billinghurst the Father of The Raw Food Diet, and Shirleys Wellness Cafe, for giving Thor and I another beautiful ten years together. Although one veterinarian had decided it was time to put Thor down, it was, in reality, time for Thor to begin living. Thanks to the B.A.R.F. diet, I had ten more wonderful years with the best dog anyone could ever imagine.

Many pet owners want the best for their animals, in particular the kind of food that they are being fed. They search for healthy foods for their pets put it can often be confusing or impossible to determine the good from the bad. More people are providing home cooked dog food for their pets, rather than use commercial foods, especially after the recent rash of recalled commercial dog food stories in the papers and on television.
Although not all dog foods are bad, some commercially available dog food can contain some rather undesirable ingredients, such as artificial colors and fillers. But you can ensure that your pet never eats these types of ingredients and that he is getting all of the nutrition he needs by cooking your own dog food at home. Your home cooked dog food will contain only the ingredients youve selected to put into it, so you can be sure that your dog is getting only quality, human grade meat, vegetables and grains.
Not so long ago it was commonplace for pets to eat food prepared at home. Then pet owners started to depend on the ease of opening a can or box of factory made dog food products. But, contrary to what you might think, preparing home cooked dog food yourself is actually not an inconvenience.
Many people who prepare a pets meals at home do so while cooking for the rest of the family. Since home cooked dog food contains the same ingredients people consume, you dont have to be concerned about which cookware you reserve for this activity. One time-saving and labor-sparing approach is to prepare the food in large quantities, some of which can be refrigerated or frozen for use at a later date.
Dont start preparing your dogs meals until you have consulted your vet. You should seek guidance as to which ingredients are right for your dog's breed and any other concerns. The doctor might even suggest that vitamin and/or mineral supplements be added to the home cooked dog food.
It makes sense to start cooking home made dog food. If you follow formulated recipes you can provide well balanced meals for your pet. You will know the quality of the ingredients that go into the food (which is often impossible with commercial foods). Your pet will be happier and healthier with more vitality. Once you get into the routine, you will find it is actually not a big hassle on your time or finances for a noticeable improvement of your dog's energy level.
You'll be happy to know that there are many home cooked dog food recipes available. And if you like cooking for your dog, you can make special treats for him as well. Not only will your dog love the special foods you make, you will have the peace of mind of knowing he is getting safe and healthy food.

Nothing is more essential to good training than good health. And the foundation of good health is a good diet.
Depending on your budget you may or may not be able to feed your dog a larger proportion of fresh meat, but at least be prepared to spend enough for a good dry food. Here are a few things to look for...
All dog foods are labeled with the ingredients in order by proportion. That is, the ingredient with largest percentage is listed first, followed by the second and subsequently the rest of the ingredients.
One of the ingredients that you don't want for your dog, but found in many feed because they are cheap, are animal by products. When you see this mentioned on the label you might reconsider buying the brand. Higher quality brands might mention it on the label, but you'll find it normally at the bottom of the ingredient list.
By-Products Meals are animal parts like feathers, claws, blood that are not good for human consumption. You can find them in animal food, because it is legal to use them for animals, but they don't provide high quality energy and they don't attribute to a good health of your dog.
One way to see if your dog is on a healthy diet is by checking his coat. Especially long haired breeds will have shinier coats and shed a lot less hair, presuming they are bathed and combed regularly.
Some experts believe that the proper ratio of meat, vegetables and starch should be around 40%, 30%, 30% respectively.
Common meats used are chicken, lamb and beef. These provide readily digestible sources of protein - essential to healthy coats, muscles, etc.
Important for healthy bones are the vegetables that provide the vitamins and minerals. A good dog food can contain many vegetables, but especially carrots and squash are good examples of quality vegetables.
The best starch comes from brown or integral rice. Rice is an terrific carbohydrate, unlike other cereals like corn. Starch is broken down by the dogs stomach and provides energy and aids in cell repair.
Just like humans, some dogs have special diet needs. For example Golden Retrievers are sensitive to wheat products. And in general corn is the worst cereal you can find in a diet, because it is so hard to digest for dogs.
Avoid bad ingredients and when in doubt talk to your vet about the best diet for your dog. Especially when your dog has diarrhea, scratches a lot, or has flatulancy.
Some dogs will find dry dog food more enjoyable if prepared with a little water and microwaved for about 30 seconds. Feed dry is thought to add to teeth and gum hygiene.
Don't overdo it with the treats. The high fat content in treats can make your dog overweight. Manufacturers add fat to the treats, because your dog loves it. If you are training your dog and you give him more than a normal amount of treats, you might consider lowering his daily ratio of dry food.
The price difference between a supermarket food and a premium food can be high. But the investment in the higher quality brand probably compensates for lower veterinary bills and a much livelier dog.
The shininess of his coat, the clear and moist eyes and other less clear indicators will show you have chosen the right food. And, to finish off with a final remark. Isn't the health of your dog priceless?
