If dog fleas are ruining your life, and no doubt ruining the life of your dog, you need a plan to get rid of them and keep them from coming back. Flea infestations have to be one of the most stubborn and frustrating things to deal with, but it is possible to rid your home and dog of these annoying little animals. To get your plan off to a good start, lets talk about the steps you will need to perform to be effective in killing fleas.
Before you even start, it's a good idea to get an idea of the scope of problem you are dealing with. Most people don't realize that the fleas living on and biting your dog (and you), are only about 5% of the total population of fleas in their various life stages that are in your dogs living space. This living space includes all areas that he normally frequents, including your yard, patio, basement, garage, car etc. If you fail to rid fleas in these other areas, or in the other life stages, then you are going to fail at getting rid of the fleas.
1 -Rid your house of fleas - first, take your dog outside so that he won't be spreading fleas back to the areas that you have just cleaned. Second, pick up anything and everything that is on the floor in all of your living spaces, including bedrooms, bathrooms, closets ? everywhere your dog has access to fleas will exist. Wash EVERYTHING - launder your clothes, sheets, dog toys, dog bedding, blankets etc. Anything that can't be dried, hang up to dry outside in the sunlight.
Go through the entire house and vacuum as thoroughly as possible, making sure to get under all beds, as close to the walls as possible, under and behind furniture. Also vacuum any upholstered items in the areas your dog frequents. Once this is done, throw out the vacuum bag so fleas don't re-emerge or hatch and re-emerge. Use soap and water to clean all hard surfaces, including closet floors, garage floors, and patio decks. Once everything has been thoroughly cleaned to get rid of obvious fleas, arrange to leave the house while you have a flea treatment. Make sure not to come back until the recommended time has passed and the treatment has been allowed to dry thoroughly.
2 - Rid your outdoor spaces of fleas - any fleas that are outside the home are a problem as well, since they will be brought back into the house again the first time you dog visits these areas. At the same time that you are having your house treated for fleas, it is a good idea to have your yard and any other outdoor space treated as well. Remember to pay special attention to dark humid places where fleas typically like to hide, such as corners, cracks, and underneath things like your patio deck.
3 - Get rid of fleas on your dog - now is the time to get rid of the adult fleas on your dog. Give your dog a bath with dog shampoo, and then thoroughly dry him. Once he is dry, double check that all fleas have been killed by going over your dog with a flea comb. It's probably a good idea to throw your dog washing clothes in the laundry, just in case some fleas jumped to you for safety during the bath.
4 - Kill fleas for the next 2 weeks to prevent re-infection - 2 weeks after the initial treatment, any fleas in the larvae stage which were impervious to the chemical treatment will now hatch and reinfest your home. After the initial treatment, make sure to follow up with vacuuming, floor washing, laundering and pet bathing regularly over the next two weeks, and your chances of catching young fleas before they have a chance to re-infest will be greatly increased.

The joys of pet ownership come with the burdens of pet ownership. Fleas are one example of such a burden. At one point or another, all pet owners will have to treat and or prevent flea infestations on their beloved pets. Fleas are a hassle and are also a great discomfort to our pets. The faster we can get rid of them, the easy the job will be and the better our pets will feel.
The best way to deal with dog fleas is to prevent dog fleas. However, even with the best of intentions and discipline, our pets will at some time come into contact with fleas. The most effective way to deal with fleas is to take a multi-pronged approach. First, you must get rid of the fleas on your pet, Secondly, you must rid the immediate environment of fleas to prevent immediate re-infestation. Lastly, you must re-double your efforts towards flea prevention.
There are now some flea medications available though your local vet that make the fight against fleas much easier. These products include the brand names Frontline and Advantage. Both of these products, if used correctly, can rid your pet of fleas within 3 to 4 days of the first application. Your pet will feel noticeable relief within 1-2 days. Applied to the base of the pet's neck, these solutions are non toxic to the pet.
There are also ways to get rid of fleas naturally. More common methods include rubbing olive oil on to your pet's skin. Working from the head to the tail, the olive oil drowns the fleas. Of course, this method can prove to be expensive for larger animals. A similar method uses baby powder or talcum powder.
It is vitally important to rid your environment of fleas. Failure to get fleas out of your home will result in consecutive flea infestations on your pet. Fleas will be living everywhere your pet has been. That means attention must be paid to every bed, every sofa, and every carpet that may have played host to even the briefest pet nap. Be methodical. Start with the bedding and work your way to the living spaces of your main floor. The more effort you put into cleaning your home, the more likely you will be successful in solving your flea problems.
Once you have eliminated fleas from your pet and your home you can think about taking steps to prevent further flea problems. There are commercially available flea prevention solutions and natural flea prevention solutions. Adopt whatever flea prevention tactics you are most comfortable with and which you will apply diligently. Preventing fleas is a lot easier than getting rid of fleas.

All natural flea remedies would not be needed if pet owners would just use some all natural flea control techniques. Fleas are a headache. The best way to deal with fleas is to prevent fleas. The best way to prevent fleas is to use natural flea control methods. People are always looking for natural healthy ways to treat fleas.
All natural flea control techniques are safe and easy to accomplish. Pet owners often use a citrus repellent. To create this type of repellant for your pet, cut up a lemon and place in a 2 litre pot. Cover the lemon pieces with boiling water and let them soak overnight or for at least 8 hours. After the lemon pieces have soaked for enough time, transfer the citrusy water into a spray bottle. You now have an all natural flea repellent for your pooch. Spray your dog all over remembering to pay special attention to around his neck and ears, around the base of his tail and under each leg. Be careful of spraying around your dog's head as citrus spray can sting.
Some dog owners use an aromatherapy repellant. By using 10 ml. of sweet almond oil as your base and add 5 drops of cedarwood essence and 10 drops of lavender essence . Shake the potion generously and spread a few drops over the skin, especially around your dog's neck. Repeat this treatment as needed or at least a few times per week. Admittedly, these ingredients can be a bit pricey and hard to find but this repellant really does work.
An all natural flea collar can be created by rubbing a few drops of citronella, lavender eucalyptus oil, Tea Tree Oil, or geranium essence on to your pet's ordinary webbing, rope or cloth collar. A fashionable bandanna also works wonderfully. Re-apply this essence or oil every 3 days or as needed.
Another common sense and very helpful suggestion is to reduce your dogs exposure to fleas. You may want to begin by reducing the dog fleas outside your home. A failure to deal with these fleas will result in your pet continually getting infested. One method to reduce fleas outside is to install a Purple Martin bird house. Purple Martins like to dine on dog fleas, thus controlling the outdoor flea population.
Remember, fleas make your loved pet uncomfortable and they are no picnic for the dog owner. The best cure is an ounce of prevention. The best all natural flea remedy is to use an all natural flea control techniques.

Pet owners everywhere are at one time or another faced with the issue of how to get rid of fleas! When your pet gets infested with fleas it can be a terribly frustrating experience for both the owner and pet. Our local pet food store sells an assortment of flea collars, flea powders and flea shampoo including Frontline for fleas. Even though the staff are helpful, it is pretty hard to know which product to use and almost impossible to know all of the active ingredients of these dog flea products. There can be some hazardous side-effects of those well known but potentially highly harmful dog flea products. The chemicals used in some of the household name products and major national popular brands on the market may be poisoning our pets and marginalizing our own family?s health at the same time. So the question is, how to get rid of fleas safely?
More often these days, pet owners are seeking natural or homeopathic alternatives to the issue of dog fleas. Some of the most commonly used natural dog flea remedies are outlined below:
1. Household salt. Sprinkle it all over the house and let it sit for a week or more. Apparently fleas don?t seem to like salt. Your dog will lay on the carpet and the salt will get on his coat. A short time thereafter the fleas are gone.
2. Talcum powder to treat dog fleas. Cover your dog or cat with baby powder and this will smother the fleas. This remedy is often recommended for puppies or kittens who are too young to be treated with any flea chemical. You can also use baking soda.
3. For the dog fleas on adult dogs, you could try an olive oil bath. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the fleas just drown in it and fall out. Start from the dog?s head and work your way back so the fleas don't move to the face where it's really hard to pluck them off. Then you just shampoo the oil out and the dog fleas will wash down the drain.
4. The Garlic solution. Some people swear that garlic is the best all-natural dog fleas remedy. Some people use a garlic pill supplement while others use freshly chopped garlic and mix it into the dog food. The fleas don?t like the scent emitted through the skin of the dog after he ingests garlic.
It would appear that there are many natural alternatives to treating dog fleas. These treatments will likely work best at the point of initial infestation. For a really bad cases of fleas you might need to try a stronger dog flea remedy such as Frontline. In figuring out how to get rid of fleas its best to do your research. However, with all matters pertaining to the health of our dogs and cats, please check with your doctor about potential side effects.

My dog and I have a great weekend schedule. First thing each weekend morning we get up, have a snack, grab a latte at the coffee shop on the way, and end up at the dog park. I just love bringing my dog to the park, since it's pretty obvious that this is one of the highlights of his week.
At the dog park, my dog gets to have loads of exercise and socialize with other dogs. I, on the other hand get to sit on a bench, enjoy my coffee, chat with my friends or leaf through a newspaper. We both like the dog park. However, the dog park does have one distinct drawback. My dog has been known to get a good dose of dog fleas after a morning of playing at the dog park.
I can't remember exactly when I made the decision to stop going to the dog park, but it was an unconscious decision over about a month I think, as I was just dreading having to go through the inevitable process of ridding fleas from my dog and my house. Well, after a few months, I began to rethink that decision. Yes, my dog got rid of the fleas, but we have both noticeably missed the dog park. I decided that maybe it was worth trying to re-establish the dog park routine.
I called my dog groomer for advice. How could we enjoy our weekend trips to the dog park and avoid getting fleas? The dog groomer was full of good ideas. She knew that I was a believer in non toxic and organic living so I needed an all natural flea prevention solution. Thankfully, those solutions are pretty common and easy to apply.
I started to feed my dog a wee bit of garlic with his wet food every morning. The groomer told me that in a matter of days the garlic will start to be emitted through my dogs skin and saliva. The smell is imperceptible to humans but acts as a significant flea deterrent. She was right. At least, I have not noticed any fleas after going to the dog park. As an added precaution, I dosed a bandanna in some citronella oil and tied it around my dog's neck. My dog doesn't seem to mind the smell and it helps to repel fleas.
Fleas can be a nuisance. If you are going to bring your dog to places where they can socialize with other dogs, fleas are going to be a problem. Fortunately getting rid of fleas naturally and all natural flea repellents are safe and easy to apply.

TICKS
Ticks are not as common as fleas but a dog can still get them even if they live in a town.Hedgehogs carry ticks and also farm animals. The Adult tick lives on the host sucking the blood, it then falls off and lays its eggs. The eggs have a mechanism where they can attach themselves to grasses and branches and wait for the next host to pass by. When the host appears then they attach themselves and the cycle starts again.
It is not untill the tick begins to grow that you will notice it . Before that the actual body is very small. As it starts to engorge itself with blood it will swell and end up looking like a wart .Do not be tempted to pull it off as the head will remain behind and this could cause an infection or abscess.Ticks are usually found on the chest, legs, neck or face
LICE
Less common than either the flea or the Tick, lice can infest the run down or stray dog. There are two types-those which bite and feed off dead skin and sucking lice which feed from the blood of the dog. Flea prevention techniques and products should also prevent lice.
STINGS
The effect of bee and wasp stings on dogs is the same as on humans . Many times a puppy will be fascinated by the buzzing noise in the grass and will try to catch the bee. If the doh gets stung on the mouth, head or neck it will cause swelling which will block the breathing passage. This happens quickly and so you need to get a vet asap.
I will never forget the time in S.Africa when I was in the house and my pug was playing outside. He came into the house and sort of collapsed on the carpet. He was struggling to breath and I was bewildered as to what had suddenly gone wrong. It was then that I remembered a story I had read in a James Herriot book where a boxer had been stung by a Bee and nearly died .I did a quick check around my pugs head and mouth and there sure enough on his lip was the sting .This was quickly removed and an emergency call made to the vet. We managed to get him there in time but it was close!
If your dog is stung on the foot, perhaps by treading on the wasp or bee and provided that the dog shows no sign of allergic reaction [such as distress or collapse] You should be able to treat the sting yourself. Bathe the area with vinegar for a wasp sting or with bicarbonate of soda for a Bee sting. If in any doubt contact your VET

Flea bites cause small, round marks on the skin that may bleed freely.
Notwithstanding, if you do use vacuuming to help control fleas, you need to make certain that you discard the bag immediately, as the larvae will hatch inside the bag, then escape into your home. If you suffer from flea bites, you should take action immediately by treating your pets and working to eliminate the pests from your home. There are several things that you can do to combat flea bites. As you severely cut down the amount of fleas that live in the area by crippling their breeding abilities, you will cut down on the number of bites suffered. Due to the tears in the skin, the bites itch, which encourage scratching and further damage to the skin.
As fleas require humidity to hatch from their larva state, purchasing and using a dehumidifier can assist in controlling flea bites. Flea bites can have grave consequences outside of the pain associated with just the bite. The most notable example of this occurring was in the medieval ages and the black plague. First, make certain you treat any pets you own with flea control medicines, such as Advantage, Advantage, and Front line and Front line PLUS. Fleas would prey upon rats which had the bubonic plague, and the the fleas would bite a human.
For those who are allergic to flea bites, the small round, red marks turn into rashes, which can swell and itch even more than a standard bite. The flea, a small insect that preys on humans, cats, dogs and other mammals, feed from blood by tearing into the skin. While the bubonic plague is no longer a significant threat to modern nations, illnesses like West Nile can be transmitted through flea and mosquito bites. As fleas tend to prey upon many hosts, they can draw the diseases from the blood of other victims and pass it onto you. This can cause a chain reaction, resulting in the flea bites lingering for up to several weeks.
These medications, when applied properly to a pet, allow the pet to become walking flea killers, as the fleas die upon exposure to an animal treated with one of these medications. For homes infested with fleas, flea bites can be painful annoyances that also carry the risk of disease. The place where the flea bit and transmitted the disease would bear a mark looking like a ring around the bite. Vacuuming is another good way to aid control flea populations.

Dog fleas are excellent jumpers, which allows them to hop onto a new host animal easily.
There are numerous ways to remove dog fleas from your home if you find yourself facing an infestation. There are many species of dog fleas, although the most notable type to live on a dog, ironically, is the cat flea. After all living fleas have been removed, it can take over two years to insure that every last egg left behind has died. These medications are highly useful, as they not only protect your dog against bites, they also help kill off the flea populations in your home. This can cause problems for people, as the fleas will jump from a dog to their owner.
If you find you have a problem with dog fleas in your home, you should make certain that you treat your pets with either Front Line, Advantage or other anti-flea medications. If you utilize these in conjunction with flea bombs, you can effectively remove living fleas from a home. Flea bites are extremely uncomfortable, causing a red, swelling spot that can itch for up to two weeks. To be effective, the room has to be completely sealed off, with air vents being covered and airways surrounding doors and windows being sealed. Dog fleas can also be repelled through the use of natural products, such as Citronella, Lemongrass and Cedar.
Dog fleas are a very common problem in households around the world. These potent, toxic tools can speedily kill a population of fleas in any room if they are utilized correctly. This can take up to five hours to do for each room, depending on how much furniture needs to be protected and how open the chamber is. Anti-flea medications on your pet can lower the number of fleas significantly, but this method can take several months to be completed.
Many cat fleas will even feed on birds, should the opportunity arise. If you are allergic to fleas, the bite can be significantly worse and need doctor's attention to resolve. This itching usually occurs regardless of whether or not you are allergic to fleas. If applied properly, they can form a repelling barrier to prevent fleas from getting in. The cat flea is commonly referred to as dog fleas, as this species of flea will feed from almost any type of mammal.
If you need faster results, you can use flea bombs or flea foggers. As many dogs go outside to play, they bring in fleas with them when they come inside. however, flea control needs long term care.

Fleas have to be the most annoying thing that most pet owners inevitably deal with at one time or another. The hardest part of getting rid of fleas is that they seem to just keep coming back. Most often the reason that fleas "keep coming back" is that you never fully got rid of them in the first place. The second you notice your pet might have fleas, you have to start the flea control process immediately, as time is of the essence when it comes to stopping fleas from multiplying.
There are two significant areas that will require your attention. You must pay attention to both areas otherwise you will never win the battle against a flea infestation. The first and most obvious area of attention is your pet itself. The second area of importance is killing the fleas that have jumped off or have fallen off your pet and now live in your carpets or linens. The second category also includes flea larvae.
The first step is to remove your dog from your house so he is not re-infected as soon as you give him a good flea bath or treatment. Killing the fleas on your dog will involve either a chemical treatment, such as Advantage or Frontline, or a more natural solution such as olive oil baths, garlic treatments or talcum powder. You can follow up the natural treatment with a flea comb. I wouldn't suggest a flea comb if you've used a flea medication, since these can be pretty toxic chemicals. This might be one reason you choose to get rid of dog fleas naturally.
To get rid of the fleas that have already escaped into your house may be a bit harder. Finding all the spots where your dog has been, and fleas may now be hiding or have laid their eggs will be tricky. Start by washing anything and everything that your dog may have come into contact with, and any clothes or portable items (IE stuffed toys) that are in areas that your dog frequents. Washing clothes, toys, linens and rugs in hot water, and then drying in the dryer or hanging them out to dry in the sun will get rid of any flea eggs that are on these items.
Once everything that you can pick up has been washed, you need to go through the house top to bottom, everywhere your dog has been, and vacuum. Be especially careful to vacuum corners and cracks in floorboards, in closets, under beds, and all your upholstery. Even better, steam clean your carpets and upholstered furniture to get rid of flea eggs and larvae. Throw out your vacuum bag once you have finished the task, which will prevent fleas from escaping, or larvae from hatching and re-infesting your house.
Once fleas have moved into your house, regaining a flea free house is a tough job, but it is possible. You need to be very persistent and thorough with cleaning all areas of your house, and ridding your dog of fleas. Once you have gotten rid of all fleas, remember to keep up the cleaning and flea treatment, since you may see a re-infestation if you have missed some of the flea eggs and larvae. If you continue the cleaning cycle periodically after the first cleaning, you will be able to catch any fleas missed the first time around and end the cycle.
