The Bichon Frise is a captivating dog that looks like a puff ball because of its curly hair. Energetic, this lovable, curly-haired dog is smart, bubbly and even-tempered. Its affable character makes it a winner for anybody, young or old, to have as a companion at home. It is believed to be a cross between the Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle. It gained popularity as a circus performer and as the organ player's dog!

Compatibility and Usage: Due to his happy disposition, he makes for a complete family dog. The Bichon Frise is not a guard dog nor is it a popular show dog. He loves being indoors but at the same time will love to take a walk outdoors or at a dog park where he will happily make many friends.

Physical Appearance: Most dogs of the breed have the characteristic non-shedding white coat although there are others that display off-white, beige or yellow-orange with dark shades around the ears. Purebreds have a white coat, black or brown eyes with the clearly identifiable mask around the eyes.

Temperament: its overfriendliness with humans including strangers makes the Bichon Frise a poor choice for a guard dog. Nonetheless, its cheerfulness, warm and loving attitude make it very popular as a family dog especially those with small children. Its temperament makes it easy for the Brison Frise to ingratiate itself with humans and even other dogs.

Although they have a streak of stubbornness but it is rarely displayed. Sudden bursts of energetic display is quite common with a Bichon Frise and most of the time you will end up having a laugh especially when they start running after their tail. They are very good around children and elderly people.

Caring & Health: The average lifespan of the Bichon is approximately 12 years. The male Bichon has a maximum height of 12 inches and the female from 9 to 11 inches. Their weights may vary anywhere from 7 to 12 pounds. The Bichon's non-shedding coat calls for regular grooming otherwise it may lead to an assortment of skin allergies and problems.

The only way you can avoid the tangling of the Brison's coat is through regular brushing which makes the dog's coat puffier and more beautiful. Refrain from feeding your dog with high fat foods as this can lead to pancreatitis, very common with this breed of dogs. Regular daily walking exercise with the right type of dog food is enough to keep the dog healthy.

The breed is also susceptible to skin irritations and allergy if hygienic practice is not done regularly. In their old age, they may also contract eye cataract and senility. Ear infections are also common but a regular bath and cleaning of the ear area is enough preventive measure. The Bichon would certainly make any member of the family happy and contented with its cute and cuddly appearance and playful attitude.

There's no denial of the fact that bad health can strike anyone. In fact birds too aren't spared of the health worries in the present times. Many a times your pet bird can easily fall prey to some or the other kind of sickness. However, you may you may not realize about the same. If neglected for long, the poor health of your pet bird can take serious shape and may result in irreparable damage to the health. So it is very important to understand the indicators that pet show about their ill health. Let's have a look at some of the signs that you need to watch out for to grasp if your bird is sick or not.

A number of symptoms might show that your pet bird is sick. Of these, evidence of skin are very prominent. The skin of a sick bird changes. For most of the forms of issues in most birds, the common manifestation is redness of skin or swelling. In some birds, this could be accompanied by skin turning flaky and sore. Frequently check your pet for any such issues.

The eyes, ears, nose and mouth are some of the most important body parts to watch out for in case you suspect sickness. You will just notice change in color around these body parts. Discharge from any of these body parts may also indicate sickness or ill health. Inflammation of the eyes and the nose are some other critical signals of illness in pet birds.

Weakness and fatigue are some obvious indicators of sickness in pets. If your pet isn't as active, you might just suspect an issue. Most pets like dogs, cats and even birds incline to adhere to themselves in case they are nursing some form of sickness. Your pet's social behavior may also appear influenced or curtailed if he is suffering from some problem.

It's also vital that you keep a close watch on the mannerism and personality of your bird. Counting on the species of bird you have as a pet, there could be subtle or extreme changes in the bird's overall behavior. Look for any unusual aggressiveness in the pet, or if the bird just lies down in the cage. Any such symptoms might be due to the fact that your pet bird is suffering from some illness.

Changes in eating habits can also help you diagnose sickness in your pet bird. Your pet bird won't be eating in the same quantity. To ascertain any changes in the eating pattern, you may try by giving your pet bird his fave meal. If your pet does not eat in the common quantity or does not touch the dish at all, possibilities are that your pet bird is ill.

Most professional dog trainers believe that a good rapport between the dog and its trainer is of utmost importance. Many dog owners believe that training is too challenging and wish they had good dog training abilities. Dog training usually is not effective if there are no treats. You shouldn't over do dog training, or you will fail. You need to use positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and punishment to train dogs as per some guides or books. Some texts state that you are head of a household, not your canine. Dogs feel more comfortable in a familiar environment.

You will be having better results when you provide training to your dog alone so that the dog is not sidetracked by other dogs and thus your dog would be able to focus upon and learn new tricks. If you have a large dog, it is important for them to be obedient, since they can get you into a lot of trouble. Dogs that don't experience decent attention from humans during the first two months of their life are often more adaptable to being trained and living in a people household. The disorder breakup anxiety, which a dog can suffer. Normally, dogs will not hold as much respect for children and younger kids as they will for an adult or an older teenager. To take control of your dogs behavior by active dog training. You need to be the one who trains the dog and not vice versa.

Adult and child canines are playful animals. They learn much when they interact with other individuals and especially pooches. Puppies, for instance, learn a lot of their social behavior from their mother and other puppies they are raised with. If a puppy lashes out and bites another young puppy, chances are very good that he or she will get bitten back very quickly. This will teach the puppy that it is the correct behavior to bite back at certain times. A new puppy considers you as its parent, so it is important to take this role seriously by providing the best training possible.

Dog breeds vary in that some are smarter than others. It is important to accept that a compromise may possibly required at some point as you can still achieve some degree of behavior therapy. Training your do without assistance requires regular consistent routines.

It's not a good idea to train your dog when your stressed out or not in a good mood. Dogs are usually scared by yelling. Their trust is unconditional so it is important to maintain that trust. However, your pet must be aware who it's master is, so the best option is to be a firm owner but not too stern, not like a dictator. Being an important part of their mental health, let your dog have fun and enjoy what they like doing. In addition to a nutritious diet; physical exercise is also important. Like people, canines have their own set of quirks and issues.

Dogs are mankind's best friend. A well behaved dog is a lot better than having a disobedient dog. I don't care what kind of dog breed you have. To those who want to groom and train their dogs so they can become better and well behaved pets, turn to "Secrets to Dog Training".

Secrets to Dog Training is an online dog training guide written by Daniel Stevens. In reality, the program is a 186 page e-book that teaches pet owners the correct way to deal with a rowdy dog's training and behavior problems.

This e-book is broken up into assorted parts and each deals with a different aspect. The first chapters of this e-book mainly revolves on some aspects like picking out a breed, canine growth phases, responsible ownership and many more fascinating dog facts.

The following chapters of Secrets to Dog Training would speak about dog training. It's divided into different sections so it makes it easy to reference and select each dog training method you want to help you completely understand this part of the e-book. Feel free to test them all out if you want.

Before reviewing Secrets to Dog Training, I asked myself what is what that led me to finding this dog training guide. I had no idea that when I got my first dog Cobra that he would be unruly and a pain in my side when I took him home. If I may jump to the ending of this anecdote, my dog would never listen to me and I didn't know what to do or where to turn. Prior to getting a Cobra I always desired to own a dog. Dogs are great friends and good at protecting homes, but some dog owners need to pay more attention to their pet's behavior.

I looked into dog obedience schools, but thought it would be better to train him myself. Some of them didn't cover every thing that I had hoped however some of them did have use full content in them and i tried reading books about dog training. I can never really tell how my dog will turn out and I tried just about every technique there is for dog obedience training and read virtually hundreds of books on how to train your dog.

My best friend introduced me to Secrets to Dog Training it worked miracles on her miniature dachshund. Secrets to Dog Training is also filled with great tricks and tips that really do work!

If you're like me your dog is more like a family member than a pet. It can be very aggregating for both my dog and me when we can't be on the same page. However Secrets to Dog Training has changed all that. My experience with this training guide has been extraordinary. I have learned more in just a few days than I have ever known about dogs, and how they can react in cretin situations. As soon as I started applying the dog training techniques in this amazing guide I had great results. For more information on how to properly train your dog visit dogtrainingperfected.com

Once it comes to dog obedience training people usually do what they believe is right contrary to all of the of opinions and advice that may be given to them. I'm not saying that people don't try different methods of dog training. However nine times out of ten the end results were always the same.

My dog cobra had a big problem in barking when he saw strangers due to chewing of non dog toys, snapping. He additionally had some other routine dog behavior issues. The obnoxious barking was probably the worst quality. Anything at all that he saw from the window, whether it was a little bird or a bunch of people, would set him off barking. A close acquaintance of mine suggested the possibility of using a training collar for my canine, but I think that is cruel and inhumane. Why buy a puppy if you don't intend to care for him properly?

Nobody wanted to come to my home any more because my dog Cobra was so rambunctious and impossible to handle. I found a program online that worked for Cobra, I had tried training books and was almost ready to enroll him in obedience school.

I found a great book for dog and puppy training. The title is "Secrets to Dog Training." The training methods in the book are at a high caliber. I learned some up-to-date techniques which are really user-friendly and was able to train my dog Cobra like the professional trainers in a short amount of time.

My dog now obeys me both at home and in public. It will very easy for my to follow these techniques by using plenty of photos. You can also view some videos on the subject. Where other advise and guides are proved as failures this online software worked wonderfully. Basically if you are have any kind of behavioral problems with you dog this online guide most likely has the answer for you.

What kind of a problem is your dog having? Too violent? Out of control? Regardless of age or type of dog, it does not matter what the issue is. You can learn the secrets of professional dog trainers without spending the money. These easy-to-learn techniques can help you correct dog behavior issues.

What also impressed me about this software is all the information that it gives you besides the dog and puppy training techniques. They go beyond the training knowing that besides you wanting an obedient dog you also want a healthy and happy dog. You and your dog will have fun together while teaching him basic and tricks like rolling over, crawling, shake hands, etc. You will know about all of the illness concerns of dogs and also what you need to know before you choose a veteran. Plus homemade recipes you can use to make your dog healthier.

No need to buy a bunch of separate books you get every thing dog related here. This review can not possibly give you all of the several benefits that are in the e-book but after checking out other books, I found this product book to be the best and I completely 100% recommend it. An untrained dog can and does cause his owner a lot of stress as well as also endangers the very life of the dog as well. It is then necessary for every dog owner to start dog training as soon as their dog or pup is old enough to be given instructions. The first part of dog training involves teaching your pet essential commands after which your pet will get to learn to do simple things like 'sit' when told to do so and to 'stay', and 'go' when so commanded.

An Early Start Is Recommended

The most important aspect to dog training is to start him off as early as is possible because once your dog has grown older it will then become harder to break his established habits. Early training will ensure that your dog learns how to behave properly and it will also be easier to train your dog. At the same time it is also necessary to understand the value of imparting dog training in short bursts rather than in long boring training sessions.

Dogs are well-known to have very short attention spans and so to use this trait of theirs to your advantage requires that you only perform the training while his concentration is focused on what you are teaching him. In addition, you need to create a routine for him to follow which can consist of five minute training sessions in the morning followed by the same duration in the afternoon as well as in the evening.

Training my dog is not always a smooth process and there are many times when common problems will arise. One of the reasons for such problems arising is that you have not managed to earn the respect of your dog. As harsh as this may sound it is nevertheless a very real reason why dogs won't follow your commands. It will take a lot of effort to teach them that you are the master and not they.

Another common dog training problem that you will need to overcome is that your dog jumps too much. In order to rectify this behavior you should try and turn your back on him to show him (who is a pack animal) that such behavior is unacceptable and your dog too will soon come to realize that when he jumps on you and you turn your back to him he is being shunned. Optimistically, this will help cure him of this common dog training problem.

You need to think about sending your dog to a dog training school in case you don't have time available to train your dog or you feel that you want your dog to be trained by professionals. Even when it proves to be hard to get your dog to obey you, taking professional help in the matter will soon help rectify the situation.

Fortunately, not all canines are created equal. The differences in every individuals vary from one another and the same goes with the variation among the disposition and personality of each dog breeds. The key to be successful with your efforts to bring home a dog is knowing which breed of dog can be suitable to you or your home. There are a great deal of different dog types that are known to the world, not to mention those produced as cross-types like in the form of Labradoodle which is a fusion of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle.

Obviously, asking yourself with - "what size of dog can your family handle?" is the mere question that you should consider. A large dog can have enough space to run and play when placed in a house in the suburbs with a large yard. Is a well-built dog but is cuddly enough and can get along well playing with children something that you wish to have? Are you hoping to get a watchdog for your home or business? Are you the competitive type of person that you even want to train a dog that you can compete with others as a show dog? Perhaps you would want to choose a pet that can be your best buddy as it can go with your simple way of resting such as watching Television all day and with size suitable enough in your apartment. In searching for the kind of dog breed that may be right for you, these things are in reality practical enough to be considered.

Consider the number of individuals living in your home. If you are a single individual, you might want a pet that needs not much of an attention and can be left alone inside your house while you go working all throughout the day and he would just keep himself busy by playing with his toys or sleeping all day. A medium to large-size dog is what a home with small kids might need since most of them are gentle and patient with kids by nature. Treating dogs similar to a toy is something that you can expect from small children - they don't know that a dog is not something they should involve in their roughhousing since they are just one of those living and breathing animals that they might hurt.

Some breeds would not tolerate the antics of small children, but would be great with older children. older adults are best with the kinds of dogs which are calm, demand not much of a time and effort as well as maintenance.

Dogs can also be divided into two important categories - dogs that tend to shed and those dogs that don't really shed. Shedding hair is a huge complaint of dog keepers. You just can't avoid seeing that dog hair clinging on to your furniture, clothing and even to your guests who would happen to roam around your house. Short haired dogs may look simpler but they can lose hair, too. Those that barely lose hair, seasonal only shedding and constant shedding are the categories to which you can divide shedding.

You must remember that when you are choosing the size of the breed, both the height and weight matter should be considered. Smaller dogs weigh under ten pounds, medium dogs weigh eleven to twenty five pounds, large dogs weigh 26-50 pounds and extra large dogs weigh fifty one to eighty pounds. exceedingly large dogs, like Mastiffs and St. Bernards, can tip the scale at 100-180 pounds.

Is your furniture tough enough to stand anything that a dog can do? pick out a dog breed based on its potential size or how it would turn out to be as an adult and not as what you would want him as a puppy since your dog will grow up soon. Anticipate big dogs to eat a lot of food to satisfy themselves. If you bring home a Mastiff, you may need another job just to pay for the dog food and care.

Care demands are another fundamental consideration. Some dog breeds require more grooming and care than others. Dogs that have fancy coats, like poodles or show dogs may spend more time in the spa than you do. A weekly or even daily grooming should not be deprived to ordinary family dogs since they might need it to untangle their coats and to keep themselves in a good physical health. Take time to study the dog breed, size, temperament and grooming demands before you make a choice. It is only you who can provide the basic needs as well as the kind and quantity of love and attention that the dog of your choice may need, so you better be mindful of the things that you should know and give to live prosperously with your dog.

In searching for the kind of dog breed that may be right for you, these things are in reality practical enough to be considered.

Are you living alone or with your home? How many other people are living in your house? A single individual who works long hours needs to pick out a dog breed that can manage with lots of alone time indoors - perhaps a dog that enjoys toys and entertains himself. A dog which can be gentle and patient with youngsters, usually with the size ranging from medium to large is a kind of dog that a home with small youngsters is best to have. For small children, a dog is like a toy - the fact that a dog is one of the pets that they might get hurt with their rough kind of play is not something that they are truly conscious about.

There are extremely large dogs which can weigh up to one hundred to one hundred and eighty pounds such as the Mastiffs and St. Bernards.

Is your furniture tough enough to stand anything that a dog can do? When you are trying to make a decision with respect to the perfect choice of the dog breed, expand your view of the dog in terms of its potential size and not only as you see him as a pup. You shouldn't be shocked to see that your big dogs would consume a lot more food than you do. If you bring home a Mastiff, you may need another job just to pay for the dog food and care.

Care requirements are another fundamental consideration. More grooming and care may be needed of some dog types while some of them can go with the basics. Those fancy coats are for show dogs like poodles and they too, would need or be given by some dog keepers more time spent in the spa more than they pamper themselves. Even ordinary family dogs may need weekly (or even daily) grooming to keep their coats from tangles and to maintain good physical health. You should be able to give time in doing some proper study with regards to the vital facts about the dog breed such as its size, disposition and grooming demands. It's only fair to the dog you choose that you be prepared to care for basic needs, plus provide the love and care that only you can give.

We did not have to spend long researching the breed of dog we wanted as our favorite has always been the pit bull. However, if you do not have a favorite breed right now and you are trying to pick out a dog breed, then this can be a bit difficult. We do not mean to complicate matters even worse, but do you realize that there are over two hundred different breeds of dogs? When you are looking for a breed, this can be a bit harsh. However, there are some questions you can ask yourself to help you make the decision.

To start with, do you live in an apartment that is small? If this is true, then you should rule out those large dogs. Instead, you should settle for the Toy group, such as the Yorkshire Terrier or the Terrier group. If you live in a large area, then it would be a good idea to have a dog.

Do you have children who live with you? Those dogs that are small can easily be injured by children, so it may be best to have a large dog.

Do you have kids who are living with you? If so, then choosing the small breed may not be such a swell idea. Why? This is because small breeds are fragile and they are easy to hurt. Your child could accidentally hurt the dog.

How much exercise will the breed require? If you have a fenced in yard, then an energetic breed such as a pit bull or hound would be a great idea. However, if you have a small yard, then you should look into the dogs that are not high in energy.

No matter what the breed of dog is, you should always plan on taking the dog for a walk during the day time. You should also look at the responsibility that is required for each breed. Some require lots of grooming and some do not.

Brazilian mastiffs are large dogs, male and female both. The males stand upwards of thirty inches at the shoulder and weigh more than 100 pounds, while the females are usually just a few inches shorter and tend to top out at 90 pounds. They have soft, short fur and their necks are very thick. They resemble bloodhounds in the face and their coat color comes in various hues and might range through yellow, brindle, reddish tan, and black. They are quite a lovely dog to look at!

The Brazilian mastiff was bred to run fast and to have a bone structure that could support an attack if need be. Their courage is known to be intense, and they are also known to be an alert dog. While they can be quite savage and hostile to strangers, they are considered to be very loving with children.

There are several qualities of the Brazilian Mastiff. Well be looking at both of the breeds, you see the hunting instinct from the Bloodhound. Add that with the guarding instinct of the Mastiff. There are well known for looking out for cattle. They seem to be a great well rounded dog. They were also trained to attack and then waiting on their master. Some were able to even keep wild jaguars away from cattle.

Another one of their unique tasks were to track down slaves that had run away. The word 'Fila' means 'to hold' in Portuguese. Along with their great hunting and holding skills, the Brazilian Mastiff can even run extremely fast and are able to gallop to the fullest.

Remember that when you are dealing with this dog that it is never so keen on strangers. They are suspicious of people that they do not know, and though this might be a good thing if they are guard dogs, it might be as good if you have visitors. In many cases, they will undergo character testing to see whether they can be trusted to only attack when they are instructed to. It is important to keep this mind when you are thinking about purchasing a Brazilian mastiff. During dog shows, they maintain this aloof and wary quality and judges are often instructed not to touch the dog.

Despite the fact the breed is fairly hostile to strangers, also keep in mind that the Brazilian mastiff is quite warm and loving towards his own family. The breed, when well trained, shows an impressive loyalty to the home and the master of the house. Do keep in mind that they can be quite fierce strangers.

If you are thinking about adopting a Brazilian mastiff puppy, look for a good breeder. Consider going to the shows and going to the homes of private breeders. Do not stop at looking at just one breeder. Ask every question that you think of and see whether the breeder is someone who really feels for their dogs. Remember that they should be able to answer any questions that you throw out at them. Remember that you can always check out pictures of the breed online as well.

This dog is quite adorable, with its rectangular body, its droopy hound dog ears and its flabby lips. Remember that any dog that you do not know well should be regarded with caution and this breed is no exception. Though they have a reputation for being fierce, they are also known to be wonderfully gentle with their own families and particularly with children.

The American Bandogge Mastiff is one of the newer breeds. It's been around for less than 50 years but has already managed to make a lot of friends. These dogs were first bred by veterinarian John Swinford, who bred an American pit bull terrier with a Neapolitan mastiff; and the rest is history in the making.

Swinfords efforts were soon followed by breeder Joe Lucero and the breed has been gaining in popularity ever since. Other than the pit bull/Neapolitan mastiff mix, there are also Bandogges which are pit bull/English mastiff crosses. As with any other crossbred dog, the animals whose parents are genuine purebreds of their respective breeds are the healthiest, most attractive and have the best temperaments. Of course, the Bandogge Mastiff is definitely a handsome dog itself. These dogs are very well muscled, something they get from the pit bull side of the family. Like pit bulls, brindled coats are the general rule with black being the most common. However, you'll also see tawny, red and even blue show up in their coats.

With their quiet nature, they also tend to have separation anxiety. They get lonely quickly and do not like for their owners to be out of their sight. Despite the lack of barking at intruders as they come about, these gentle giants will howl when their owners are absent. Just like most dogs, if they are raised from a puppy around other animals, even kittens, they can get along with them just fine, despite their large build.

Bandogges are very friendly and sociable, meaning that they tend to get lonely easily when their human family isn't around and are known to need some coaxing to get over their separation anxiety. These imposing but loving and loveable animals may not do a lot of barking, but they might howl when they miss you. Like any other dog, they can get along with other dogs, cats or any animals if they're introduced while young.

Like other large breeds, a Bandogge likes to get plenty of exercise and has lots of energy for running and playtime and is always game for a good long walk. You'll want to give them a couple of daily walks and any other outdoor activity time you can spare. These loveable animals form close bonds with your family and any other pets in the household quickly and are extremely loyal. Their friendly, playful nature and calm temperaments make these gentle giants one of the very best breeds for families with children too! American Bandogge Mastiffs can sometimes have slightly dry skin, but they are an all around low maintenance pet where grooming is concerned. I had just started my very first online offbeat cartoons and funny gifts venture, and stopped immediately my daily creative routine. Having grown up in rural Mississippi, I was used to the hot muggy afternoons which often brought tornadoes and rain. Thor was about twelve years old but was staring at the walls and not responding to my voice. He had been very active up until then. I got him to the veterinarian within ten minutes and the diagnosis was some rare ailment that dogs that age often get similar to seizures and he must be put down. I had been a dog lover and owner since age four. My intuition made me skeptical of the veterinarians conclusion instead I decided to keep Thor comfortable for a few days at home. Once Thor was resting I urgently began searching the Internet for alternative solutions and discovered Dr. Ian Billinghurst an Aussie author/vet/surgeon.

Dr. Ian Billinghurst was not easy to find. He is an Australian holistic/but also also practices traditional western medicine and surgery. He had just penned the controversial book titled Give Your Dog A Bone. It entailed a diet plan that was basically raw foods, bought at the grocery preferably organic. The special recipe contained lots of raw meaty bones and occasionally a blend of vegetables, raw burger, etc. in a blender. I discovered that raw organic tripe is one of the most perfect foods for domestic animals. The first time I fed Thor a raw chicken wing, I was mortified. I had heard all my life this was the surest way to kill a dog, but I was desperate. I could already see and feel his soul energy fading. Thor surprisingly took to this new diet, after not eating at all or drinking very much water for several days, and even then only by dropper. I switched his water to bottled spring and ordered herb tinctures and live flash-glanced vitamins with live minerals as well. He was devouring these raw foods, from hamburger to raw chicken to carrots to pears to romaine lettuce (and a blend of them all).

Slowly, very slowly, I could see him coming back to life. The biggest problem was the terrible odor and coloration of his stools and urine for the first month. Dr. Billinghurst warned me that would happen. The toxins of commercial pet food were leaving his system. One morning, about a month after beginning Thor on the B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods), Thor jumped on my bed, something he had never done prior to the diet. He was wagging his tail and ready to go out and play. He grabbed his leash and was ready for a walk. He didn't want a short walk but was willing to go with me my usual five miles. He kept up with me without even panting or having a shortness of breath. The vet had also advised me that in addition to the mystery disease, Thor also suffered from level two heart diseases. I started giving him the same herbs I was taking for my heart disease such as hawthorn berry and very hot cayenne tincture. I stopped all vaccinations as advised and bought homeopathic nosode vaccines ordered online from an only pet care service in California. His daily diet also consisted of fresh organic fruit and vegetables (and occasionally yogurt mixed in a blender. He loved it all and devoured every meal like a wolf in a hen house, whereas in the days of feeding him commercial dog food, even the best, he approached it with great disappointment and rarely finished a bowl (usually left it less than half-finished).

This should have been no surprise. According to Dr. Billinghurst and now other experts on the subject of the raw pet diet, dogs digestive systems have not evolved very much from their earlier days, before domestication, when they were still wolves, just as cat's systems had not since they were lions. Thor's energy level kept growing and growing as did his wanting to be near me and play at every given chance, whereas he used to mostly lay around and sleep during his pre-barf days. Up until age twenty, he continued to greatly enjoy our walks, usually three to five miles. It was only when he was about twenty one, that his phase two heart disease changed to phase four, and I knew that was dangerous. It was only then, almost a decade since his last vet visit, except for checkups, that I was forced to also use allopathic medicines, such as Lasix for his heart. I did so very hesitantly, as I was aware this type medicine would eventually hurt his liver and kidneys, which of course it did. In his final year, he had several near-death experiences in which I rushed him to the vet. I was already resolved that if he were in any kind of discomfort, or his quality of life was compromised, I would sadly have my best friend put down. The vet insisted he would not put him down. After all Thor had made three major comebacks at age twenty-two which he considered nothing less than a miracle. After a final try of a body flush, I could tell he was almost gone. I asked the vet what to do. He said to take him home, there was still a chance. I knew there was not. I could see his life and soul fading from his eyes. I knew him too well. He had been by my side, by my desk at home where I work, for a decade. I said I would take him home but I ordered a bottle of morphine which I administered around the clock as I slept on the floor cradling him during his final night. I had to put the morphine pill down his throat and set my alarm clock for every three hours so as to wake up and give him another. On the 6 am alarm, I opened the bottle to give Thor his pill, but his life-force was now gone. I looked down and saw there was no breath, no heartbeat. Even though I knew he was "in a better place" I cried for weeks. I looked closely at his face and he was still smiling. He always had a smile through life, and now it stayed with him even in death.

It was snowing heavily outside, icy, and it was hard to carry his almost forty pound body up the hill. He had a favorite hill behind our home where he chased birds, squirrels, eagles, chipmunks, rabbits and every animal imaginable. I built a small casket for him and a headstone. I had a shovel in the other hand. I lay him down in the casket, and begin digging, first through the snow and ice and finally through the hard dirt until the hole was about four feet deep. I lay him in it, said a prayer, and filled it cold and shivering and still crying. I carefully placed the coffin in the ground and filled it up. I placed the headstone. It's epitaph read, To Thor: A Special Dog Who Brought Only Joy & Happiness To All. Loved and missed more than he will ever know. Your best friend, Rick

Almost two years has passed since I buried Thor on that snowy day. I grieved much longer and was more intense than I had calculated lasting nearly half a year; and still think of him often. Friends were suggesting I go immediately to the shelter and adopt another. I could not do it then but now I know I will one day. It is after all what Thor would have wanted. I can only thank God, and thank Dr. Ian Billinghurst the Father of The Raw Food Diet, and Shirleys Wellness Cafe, for giving Thor and I another beautiful ten years together. Although one veterinarian had decided it was time to put Thor down, it was, in reality, time for Thor to begin living. Thanks to the B.A.R.F. diet, I had ten more wonderful years with the best dog anyone could ever imagine.
