Every owner will have cat health questions from time to time. Short of calling a vet or paying for an expensive visit every time a little issue crosses your mind, you have to find resources that will give you answers directly. Cats are a pleasure to have in the home, but their health must be looked after just as any other animal requires.

Are pain medications safe for a cat?

If your cat were to somehow get injured and appeared to be in severe pain, what would you do? This is a common issue with cat owners, because this species of pet is very good at hiding signs of pain. The good news is there are some specific pain killers that are safe for cats as long as they are given in the right dosage and at the right intervals. If you think your cat is in pain take them to the vet and never try to medicate them on your own.

Can felines give a disease to humans?

It is hard for many owners to even entertain the idea that their beloved pet could actually pass a disease or health condition to their own body. The truth is there are some feline diseases and conditions that can in fact be passed to humans.

So, does this mean cats living inside the home are unsafe or unsanitary? Absolutely not! It just means that you have to take proper care of your cat to ensure everyone stays healthy and disease free. Proper care includes looking after the litter box so it is always sanitary, bathing and grooming your pet regularly, and taking them in for all of the required vaccinations and health checks with a licensed vet.

How long will my cat live?

A feline is not going to live anywhere near as long as a human, but they are living longer in modern times than they did in the past. There are some cats living twenty or more years thanks to owners keeping them properly vaccinated and well cared for.

The average life span for a cat is around nine years, but if you are properly caring for your cat do not be surprised if your feline friend survives much longer than that.

In an attempt to rid of the fleas off my cat, I used a bit of an over the counter flea remedy. I by mistake used the remedy made for my dog, and for the next three days was not certain if, my cat would live. Fleas are a huge bother, and also having fleas can influence the health of your animal. You have to be cautious, nonetheless, to respond appropriately.

WHAT KIND OF DISEASES DO FLEAS CAUSE? The most common result of fleas is FAD. This is abbreviated for flea allergic dermatitis. The flea's saliva makes the cat itch, then scratch, then the skin gets inflamed - and it keeps going. Scratching is one of the first signs your cat has fleas if you don't comb them regularly, and the quicker you work to eliminate the fleas, the easier it will be.

Fleas also cause tapeworms. Since cats groom themselves, they may ingest a flea that has tapeworm larva. To check for tapeworms in your cat, look at the anus and see if there are any rice shaped segments. With a heavy infestation, cats bodies can't absorb nutrients from food. Anemia is the worst case scenario, as well as feline anemia infection. With enough time, fleas can ultimately cause the blood cells to rupture, resulting in death.

Consult your veterinarian for help in eliminating fleas from your pets. Over the counter formulas can cause reactions, just like medication from the veterinarian. The difference is that the vet alerts you for signs of reactions and is available if your kitty has a deadly reaction. Never exposed small kittens any type of flea medication. They are too small to handle the toxins easily.

Regular grooming, including the use of a flea comb, will help you remove any fleas that have found the way onto your cat. This can be a relaxing time for you and your cat; simply comb and keep a cup with soapy water near by to drown any little buggers you find. One natural remedy you can try is mixing one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into your cats water. The smell that it will create through your cats skin over time is said to repel fleas and ticks.

TREATMENT. If your cat gets plagued with fleas, speak to your veterinarian regarding getting a tablet to combat the current fleas, and integrating that with a cure for the eggs. Ridding of fleas is a series of actions, not a one-time attempt. If your cat ventures out of doors, it will be necessary to treat your yard as well.

The most difficult time I had was getting rid of the fleas in my carpet. I tried everything! Nothing worked, but the good news is the least expensive solution finally gave me relief. Simply mix half table sale with half borax in a baggie (borax is found by the laundry soap), sprinkle on your carpet and any fabric furniture, leave for 24-48 hours and vacuum. Magic. I never saw another flea.

No matter what avenue you take, keeping your feline friend content and healthy is a goal all cat lovers have in common. Following these tips will go a long way to reaching your goal.

Cat Mange is spread by mites that burrow under the skin and is a very painful problem, but one that can be treated efficiently and quickly if approached correctly. It is true that mites on cats are there as a matter of course but it is only when the infestation becomes out of control that mange is the result.

Any explosion in the mite population can be thanks to many things - disease in elderly or very young cats is one popular reason, and poor nutrition another Cat Mange is displayed by notable scratching and obvious red areas on the skin, as the mites dine on the hair follicles causing the cats coat to become untidy. There are different mites that spread mange, and the most common type is Sarcoptic mange, a disease that can also be found in people where it is known as scabies. Sarcoptic mange is volatile famously, so if there are further animals in contact with an affected cat they need also be treated.

It is wise keeping an eye open for any signs of extreme tiredness or lack of appetite, as well as poor sleep patterns and foul odors as these can also be signs that signal the onset of mange on cats. Recognizing mange is a simple affair and involves a sample of skin from the diseased area; this will identify the severity and type of mange in effect and help to identify the proper method of treatment. It is unusual but not unknown, for mange to turn life threatening, and it is usually the elderly or very young cats that are most prone to this. Any clear alterations in behavior that could indicate mange should be taken seriously and rapid treatment is recommended.

Excessive itching should be taken as a clear indication that mange may be present, and treatment should begin straight way. It is important that rapid treatment is used in treating mange, as this is not a condition that will pass over or heal of its own accord. Cat Mange, being caused by mites, must be treated quickly and efficiently and the mites eradicated in order to rectify the problem, and the treatments for doing this are very specific to the condition. If left unattended mange will only worsen as the mites take a hold; in all cases the mange can travel from a specific part of the cat's body to become an all-encompassing infection that is painful for the cat.

Treatment for mange is straightforward and usually quick, although it depends on the type of cat concerned as long haired cats are harder to treat. There are a number of ways in which mange in cats is eradicated; the application of creams and lotions is generally a preferred method, and sometimes a spray is also applied and an antibiotic prescribed. In a number of cases of mange treatment results should begin to be noticed after treatment has been ongoing for a week, but sometimes the breed, age and condition of the cat in question has an effect on the lifetime of the treatment.

Any cat mange treatment has to be one that can get deep into the cats skin and remove not only the mites but any eggs they may have laid, as mites multiply at an alarming rate and the population can increase very quickly. Attacking the mange problem at root cause is the only real solution, as once the mite population has been killed there will be no additional spread of infection and the cat should heal effectively. Cat Mange is sadly a common problem but is one that can be treated successfully with the proper approach; should a cat perform any of the symptoms described it should be treated quickly.

If you are a pet owner and your pet is either a cat or a dog you probably already know these things. Most of the time pet owners tend to forget how important these things are so I am here to remind you.

* Movement: Both a pet cat and a pet dog will need for you to make them use their physics. Their body need exercise to function and the larger the pet's body is the more exercise will be required.

* Way to exercise: If your cat is a stay at home cat you will need to take it out into nature. If you live in a big city you must take it for daily walks. When considering adding a new dog to the home, there are many factors to think about. Feline coccidiosis is a condition in cats that causes watery stool, dehydration, abdominal pains, and vomiting. All cats are at risk from this unfortunate disease, though kittens and debiliated cats are the most common sufferers.

Actually, coccidia is very common among both felines and canines. It is thought that around a third of cats and dogs are in fact infected with the disease. However, not all of these animals will show symptoms of infection.

Coccidiosis is caused by one-celled organisms called protozoa. Acting in a similar way to other parasites, such as worms, protozoa live in the intestinal tract of cats.

However, coccidia and worms require different treatments. This makes it very important that you take your cat to a veterinarian as soon as you notice symptoms of intestinal distress, diarrhea, and vomiting.

So, how do cats become infected with coccidia? Through coming into contact with infected fecal matter. All cat stool contain immature protozoa (referred to as oocytes), which are relatively harmless until they mature in an open environment. The longer a cat stool has been to decay, the more the oocytes develop, and the more at risk cats coming into contact with it become. Another way of cats developing coccidiosis is from licking or eating protozoan infected mice.

To prevent against coccidia infestations, you should...

1. Keep basic sanitation for catteries and kennels. Where they sleep, eat and play should be clean, tidy and well maintained. Of particular importance is the disposing of stool within a day or two of it appearing.

2. Disinfect. Before doing this, you may want to move your pets to a different location for the time being. The reason being that the fumes from disinfectants are potentially harmful to animals. You may then spray the area with a disinfectant that contains a considerable amount of ammonia or a little bleach mixed with a good amount of water.

3. Not forget to tend to crevices, and hard to reach areas. Pets, being curious, end up sniffing around in lots of places that you might not expect. They are exactly the places that parasites lurk in so don't forget about cleaning and disinfecting those areas too.

4. Repaint. Coccidian oocytes living on the walls of your house will instantly be killed should you repaint the areas where they are.

Obesity in cats and dogs can cause health problems. The pet owner may not be aware of the health risks associated with obesity. Pet owners may even think that their pets look cuter being overweight and that there is no cause for concern.

The risks of diabetes and arthritis are increased by obesity in cats and dogs. Losing weight can often make these conditions less severe. Obesity should be considered a reason to consult a veterinarian.

Certain medical conditions can cause obesity. The veterinarian may do blood tests or other tests to check for these conditions.

One example of a medical condition that can cause obesity is a thyroid condition. Hyperthyroidism and other metabolic conditions can cause the pet to put on weight and can cause other symptoms as well. If the metabolic condition is treated, it may help with the pets obesity.

Cat owners should be aware of plants poisonous to cats. Though many people decorate with plants without thinking about any consequences, the cat owner needs to be responsible for keeping plants that are poisonous to cats off the property.

The plants poisonous to cats are often plants that are sold for seasonal decoration. Mistletoe and poinsettias can cause the cat to have vomiting and diarrhea. These plants can also cause difficulty breathing and blistering in the mouth.

Maine coon cats are hardy cats with a sturdy build and thick coats. Two of the distinguishing characteristics of Maine Coon cats are their heavily-tufted ears and bushy, brush-like tail.

Many legends tell stories about the origin of the Maine Coon cat. One such legend is that the Maine Coon cat breed originated from the mating of raccoons and feral domestic cats. This is not genetically possible.

The physical characteristics of the Maine Coon cats seem well adapted to the winters of Maine. Maine Coon cats have thick, long coats and tufted toes that have been compared to snowshoes.

The Maine Coon cat has a rectangular body. Their rounded eyes are large. Possible eye colors for Maine Coon cats are gold, green, green-gold, or copper. Blue eye and odd-eyes are possible on white and bi-colored Maine Coon cats.

The large, heavily-tufted ears are set wide on the Maine Coons medium-sized head. Maine Coon cats may have a frontal ruff which is considered a desirable characteristic by breed standards.

White, blue, red, cream, and black are the possible solid colorings for Maine Coon cats. The possible colorings other than the solid colors are tabby, shaded, smoke, calico, tortoiseshell, and bi-colored.

Families who have changes in financial circumstances or living arrangements may find themselves unable to care for their cats. Some cats may have behavior problems or health problems for which the family feels unable to handle.

Kittens may be surrendered due to their families lack of desire to care for them or inability to be responsible for multiple cats. Sometimes, a family member is allergic to cats and therefore can longer have a cat in the home.

In most cases, the cats in cat rescue homes and shelters have been placed there due to problems with the family and not a problem with the cats behavior or health. Despite this fact, many people are reluctant to adopt cats and other pets from shelters due to the assumption that there must be something wrong with the pet.

A cat rescue home can be a small rescue group that shelters the cats in homes or people who choose to foster cats who are currently without permanent homes. Some cat rescue homes are dedicated to fostering a particular cat breed, though breed-specific rescue homes are more common with dogs than cats.

Many animal shelters rely on fosterers to care for some of the animals in their homes. A cat foster home can provide a cat with a more natural, family setting with social interaction until a permanent home is found.

Many people become fosterers for different reasons. They may have a desire to feel needed by the fostered pets or are proud to be a part of animal rescue efforts. Fosterers often receive benefits directly from the pets in their care in the form of companionship and affection.

People may feel unable to become a cat fosterer in their current situation. It should be known that many of the costs like veterinary bills are usually covered by the animal shelter. Some animal shelters even provide the necessary supplies such as cat food and litter.

Feline distemper is a dangerous cat viral infection that is preventable. This condition is sometimes called feline panleukopenia or feline panleuk. The feline distemper virus is related to the virus that causes distemper in dogs.

People may mistakenly think that the name distemper means that the cat disease causes aggression or changes the cats temperament. Two common signs of feline distemper are vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms of feline distemper include abdominal pain and hunched posture.

Feline panleukopenia causes a drastic drop in the cats white blood cell levels. A cat with this cat disease may develop a high fever.

Cats infected with feline distemper often become depressed and lose their appetites. They may stop grooming themselves. The third eyelid may become more noticeable in the corner of the eye.

Feline distemper is highly contagious. It is transmitted from cat to cat by shared litter boxes, fleas, shared food or water bowls, mutual grooming, or shared bedding.

A kitten may be born with feline distemper if the mother was infected with the virus. Feline distemper can be spread from human contact with infected and uninfected cats.

Though kittens born to mothers with the antibodies have a natural immunity to the virus that causes feline distemper, this immunity is temporary. The temporary immunity to feline distemper lasts about eight weeks. In order to be protected, the kitten needs to receive the appropriate vaccines.

There is no cure for feline distemper. Treatments for feline distemper help alleviate the diarrhea and other symptoms. If the cat is to survive, the cats immune system must fight the viral infection.

Bleach is used to disinfect surfaces that may have been contaminated by the feline distemper virus. This virus can live on surfaces for years, so it is important to thoroughly disinfect all contaminated surfaces to prevent the spread of the disease.
