Bulldogs have been around for quite some time, originating in England in the 17th century. The sole purpose of the breed at this time was bull baiting, or setting dogs on bulls in an arena. Everyone I talk to says that I should get an English bulldog that is female because it will be mellower and will interact better with my children; however, I would really like to get a male dog. My opinion based on my professional standing as a breeder of bulldogs, is that just about every bulldog has a wonderful personality. These dogs tend to love people. They are almost all very friendly. When it comes to their personality, the majority of bulldogs will have a very mellow attitude and they will love being around people. You should not anticipate a huge difference between the sexes when it comes to this gentle personality trait.

The actual physique or build of a bulldog will usually vary between the males and females. Generally speaking, male dogs will have a bigger head, its shoulders and chest will usually be wider and it will have a larger ribcage as well. The female dog will still be rather big boned, but it will be considerable smaller and more slender than its male counterpart. Of course, this is all just a generalization. There will always be exceptions among the breed. If you want a bulldog that is large boned and has a huge rib cage and big head, then in all likelihood your choice will probably be for getting a male bulldog. Here is an excellent question. Should I breed my bulldog? Many times a pet owner loves their dog and wishes to experience the joy of raising a bulldog litter. There is little I hate more than some stuck up snob who will only sell their dogs with limited AKC reg. This means your dog is a pet only and can never be bred. Or at least bred and have the puppies registered with the AKC. What makes that breeder so special that THEY...... can breed and produce bulldogs, but nobody that they sell to can ever have a litter out of one of their puppies. That irks me like not much else. How much more stuck up can a person get?

If you are planning on breeding your pet anyway, there are several points you should consider before breeding your pet. First and foremost, raising a litter of puppies can be extremely expensive and very time consuming to say the least.

There is the necessary consideration of quality. Is your bulldog one that can meet the standards of the AKC for what a bulldog is supposed to look like? If this is not the case, when you breed your dog you will simply be perpetuating any undesirable trait. While your dog might be a very beautiful animal as well as a wonderful addition to your family, will it be able to improve this breed?

Secondly, there is the important consideration of cost. Many people who attempt to breed English Bulldogs can plan on having to pay for a stud service. A stud service can range between $600 and $800 for a stud dog that is well-put together. This does not provide any guarantee that the puppies will eventually come to look like their Dad, or even that you will get a litter that is large. All this will get you is the breeder. Many breeders who are offering a stud service will provide a repeat breeding for no additional charge if the female dog does not take on the first try. However, this will typically be limited to people who have done progesterone tests in order to verify that the female is indeed in heat and she has not yet ovulated prior to being bred. If you have your vet draw blood and do 4 progesterone tests you will most likely have spent an additional $200 - $400 depending on your vets fees. Then of course, there is the added cost of breeding to be considered. You may A.I. you dog yourself, however if you have your vet do the surgical implantation of semen or A.I., it can cost you an additional $150 to $1000. Yes, that is correct. It can cost as much as $1000. There is then the cost for a C-section. You should be prepared to pay another $300 to $1500 in the event of a C-section. That of course will assume that your dog avoids going into labor over an evening or weekend. If evening or weekend services are needed, the C-section cost might go up to as much as $1500 to $3000. As you are probably noticing, you could very easily wind up spending anywhere from $2000 to $5000 just in order to produce the litter of pups. Then, you might end up with only a single pup and obviously, there will be no guarantee that this pup will even live.

Thirdly, you certainly need to consider the time that will be needed. The puppies will have to be fed every two hours after they are born. This will continue throughout the night. You will need to be prepared to be taking a month or more off from work. Well, not exactly off from work, it will just be off from work without pay. There will be plenty of work that you will need to do and you will not be getting very much sleep either.

With all of that said it can certainly be enjoyable and fun if you happen to have a female which will warrant being bred, if sleep deprivation is something you do not mind, and IF you will be able to handle the cost.

Secondly, find a breeder whose online website is professional. Someone who puts time and effort into their website is likely to do the same thing with their dogs. If the pictures are of poor quality. If they are grainy and do not properly show what the dogs look like, then that could be a sign of what sort of pride they take in their dogs.

Make sure to find breeders with complete contact information and that they live in America. You can cross check by matching the numbers in the contact with the area code of the place in their contact details. This might sound silly but this is for your safety. Give them a call and talk to them straight over the phone and simply do not believe if the correct numbers exist on the website.

Try to find a website that has pictures of dogs from various angles. This is essential to get a better view of how the dog exactly looks like. Because by viewing a single photograph, you won't be able to decide how the dog looks in real life does.

Imagine trying to drink milkshake through a straw designed for coffee (they are usually brown and used to stir and drink your coffee through). You can do it but it is not easy. Then there is the soft pallet to consider. In the majority of Bulldogs, an excess of skin and tissue is to be found on the soft pallet and this obstructs the passage of air. I know the above claim may surprise many people but dishonesty in the dog business is very common. There are many dog breeds but this article will focus on English bulldogs and their importers. Some importers are sourcing inexpensive puppies from outside the U.S.A, importing them into the U.S.A and selling them for as much as quadruple the cost price. In addition, it appears as though many of these importers violate several federal laws when attempting to pursue their dishonest business scheme. This is why it is very important when buying an English bulldog, to be certain that the dealer is legitimate and reputable. Due diligence on the part of the consumer may actually protect the consumer from having to spend lots of money on vet bills.

One of the ways these importers cheat the system is through lying to the U.S. customs regarding the age of the puppy. It is illegal for an importer to bring a puppy into the U.S. and then sell it to another person without that puppy having been given their rabies vaccine plus waiting a 30-day period of time. In California a puppy needs to be 4 months of age before being given the rabies vaccine. It most other states it will need to be 3 months of age. When you add to this age a 30-day waiting period before the puppy can be sent to its new owner, the YOUNGEST the puppy can be sent to its new home after being imported is 4 to 5 months old. And this is assuming the puppy was vaccinated at the absolute youngest possible age. And as most of you know, this if usually not the case. Typically things don't happen quite on time.

So how do importers get around the U.S. customs? Very simple. They lie. They have the breeder put on the health certificate that the bulldog puppy in question is a miniature bulldog (hence its small size) and that it is 4 to 7 months old and has already been rabies vaccinated. I have confronted an importer in Mississippi. This lady has a prominent website and claims to import dozens of bulldogs a year. When I caught her in this lie she flat out told us that if the U.S. customs had a problem with this that they would do something about it. According to this lady, everybody does it. And the U.S. customs does nothing about it. So by default. While it is not lawful, it is permitted.

One should understand that you usually get what you pay for. Do not be enticed by a cheap price on a puppy. A cheap puppy will most likely be underage and it should be understood that a reputable breeder will not sell an underage puppy to an importer or lie about their puppies on health certificates and vaccination cards. If a breeder or importer is willing to lie about such things, how can you be sure that they are not lying about the pedigree of the puppy or other related matters?

For one's own peace of mind and to save unnecessary spending, one would buy a well-bred, healthy English bulldog directly from a reputable breeder. Do not use a middleman. Though there may be some honest resellers, most are just looking to make money quick. Stay with an experienced breeder with a good reputation to be sure you will be treated fairly and honestly.
