Sometimes we tend to forget that when choosing a cat, we should consider more than just the basic care of feeding, watering, etc. One must consider the grooming requirements, personality types, and lifestyles of different cat breeds to determine which best suits your own. This article will list the top five most popular cat breeds, as well as information regarding physical and personality characteristics.
The Oriental breed is very inquisitive, and loyal to boot. While they look very fragile, they are actually quite muscular and lithe. They are of an energetic nature and would do very well with a covered yard for plenty of room to exercise.
One of the most popular family cat breeds is the American Short-hair. They are quite muscular, but are versatile in lifestyle. They do not require a great deal of exercise, and can be content as lap cats; however they can also adapt to an active lifestyle if you encourage such. They are known to be an extremely loving breed and can live happily with doting families.
The Birman breed has an easy-going, sometimes playful personality, but is perhaps best recognized by the dirty white body with dark face, ears, legs, and tail. It has a silky, long-haired coat that does not mat and a very sturdy, large body. The Birman enjoys playing, but isn't needy for attention.
If you're looking for a very affectionate, cuddly cat, then a Sphynx may be the breed for you. Although they look like they have no fur, they actually have a peach-like fuzz all over their body. As they don't have much hair to protect their skin, they should strictly be kept indoors. This breed does require a bit of extra care, particularly with room temperature, as this breed can easily become too cold.
A very mild and gentle cat breed is the Ragdoll, appropriately named such as it can be quite floppy and relaxed when picked up. If you love a cat that accompanies you from room to room, this breed would likely be a wonderful match for you. They are very careful not to use teeth or claws when playing around, so they would also make an excellent cat for children.
You should now have a better idea of the sort of cat that you will want to include in your family. Just remember that your lifestyle will ultimately be imposed upon your cat, so try to choose a breed whose lifestyle traits mesh the best with your own.
