Fish are great starter pets for kids. They do not need a great deal of attention or special care, like a dog might. They are quiet, reliable pets. Though the fish themselves require minimal care, there is much aquarium maintenance that one needs to think about. If a fish is the first pet your child ever has, teach them proper care. It is a good foundation for taking further responsibility with more complicated pets later on.

When choosing a fish tank, consider getting a good-size tank rather than a fishbowl. The bigger the tank you have, the more water, and the less likely that any contaminant will affect the fish.

You can also have more fish in a bigger tank, and they can all live happily and have their own space. Why buy all of the equipment for a tank and have just a solitary, lonely fish? The fish themselves are very inexpensive and do not require much food. Having more fish is good for the health of all the others because it is more like a natural environment. It is good for them to interact.

Your goal is to keep the ecology in the tank as normal as possible. The fewer the fish, the less genetic diversity, and the more chance of an ecological disturbance if a fish is sick or dies. Think of how life really is in an live body or water.

The maintenance of a tank depends on what type of fish you have. If you have fresh water fish, you do not have to worry quite as much. If you have salt water fish, you need to measure the salt content of the water you put in. Salt may require specialized systems for briny species. It can be difficult to measure the levels.

Apart from the system, which you should discuss and decide upon with the sales associate at the pet store, the system should be cleaned every two weeks. That is how often the water should be changed. You should be taking some out and replacing it with new. Usually between ten and thirty percent is sufficient. Once again, a tank is not the same as an open body of water. Contaminants will infiltrate because there is only so much water to deal with. You can reduce water changes and create a healthy ecosystem with the new EcoBio-Block products. You can also test the water for pH levels occasionally, or more often if they seem stressed and you can't find any other possible reason.

Change the filter inserts at least once per month to ensure everything is going all right. Apart from that, just be observant. Count your fish, if you have a lot of them. Watch how they play with each other every day, if there is bullying, if some are not getting any food, or if others are getting too much. If you have an overly aggressive fish, you should remove it.

Aquarium canister filters are needed in order to maintain the balance and cleanliness of the aquarium. This type of canister filters may be used for either a freshwater or saltwater aquarium. Depending on the type of canister filter, it may contain media that may filter the water through mechanical, chemical, or biological means.

The canister filters and the hang-on type of filters are comparable in the way they look and perform their functions. However, one of their major differences is that the canister filter may be placed in different locations in the aquarium. Aside from hanging the canister filter, it may also be placed below the aquarium, which will allow you to improve the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium. It may also be placed inside the aquarium. This type of water filter is also referred to as ?submersible filter.? Because of the improved filtration mechanisms of the canister filter, this is usually recommended for those aquariums that have messy eaters that tend to produce a lot of waste.

One of the best advantages of having a canister filter is that it has a larger capacity compared with other filters. Despite the large capacity, it is more compact so you can hide it from view, if you would like to. On the other hand, one of the disadvantages of using canister filters is that they have to be frequently cleaned. This is because the filtration relies on mechanical means. The filtration device will be easily clogged up by the filtered wastes and these have to be removed as soon as possible to prevent the decaying matter to come back into the water.

For this filter, the water is pumped at regular speeds into the filter. The filter usually performs its task using mechanical filters, such as a micron filter cartridge or glass wool. After the mechanical filtration stage, the water is then allowed to pass through different layers of media, including carbon and other absorbents. This will trap the odor, chlorine, ammonia, and other unnecessary chemicals that are in the water.

The canister filter has three types of filtration device. First, the water is allowed to pass the mechanical filter, which usually has the glass wool or the micron filter cartridge. This will filter the solid wastes in the water. Next, the water is subjected to chemical filtration by allowing it to pass through a layer of carbon. This will absorb the odor and chemicals such as ammonia and chlorine from the water. Biological filtration is the last step. Here, a mixture of bacteria is allowed to act on the nitrites that are in the water. These toxic chemicals are converted into nitrates, which are less toxic.

Guide to proper choice of canister filters

You have to do this as soon as you detect a problem in order to prevent leaks that might threaten the lives of the fish and other animals in your aquarium. Introducing new fish to an already existing aquarium is not as easy as it may seem. There are a lot of things to think about and prepare before you can safely transfer your new fish to your aquarium. You cannot just buy any aquarium fish you want then dump them in the tank as soon as you reach home.

First thing to check is the quality of your water. It is stressful enough for all the fish involved when new fish are introduced to their number. Do not add to it by making them suffer in poor water quality. The stress in them might reach fatal levels. Make sure that you have the highest possible water quality by testing for the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Do the necessary changes or cleaning before you add the new fish to the aquarium. If you dont like frequent aquarium cleaning, add an EcoBio-Block to your aquarium to give it the beneficial bacteria and trace minerals that can reduce harmful substances in your water and keep it clean, healthy and clear.

When adding new fish to your aquarium set up, choose the kinds that are compatible with the fish that are already in your aquarium. Choose those that will peacefully and comfortably co-exist with your present fish. You dont want them hurting or eating or killing any of your old fish and vice versa. It will be wiser to introduce more than one fish to your aquarium to minimize the chances of the new fish being picked on by the old fish. Also choose those that will thrive in the same water environment that you have in your tank. There are specific pH and water temperature levels that have to be considered when introducing new fish to any water.

One way to avoid conflict among the fish is to rearrange the tank before putting in the new fish. Your old fish are likely to have established regular hiding spots, which they can get territorial with, if a new fish is introduced. Rearrange your plants and other accessories as part of your preparation for that new fish. Give them as many hiding spots as possible to help them steer clear of each other while getting used to the new set up.

One important rule in introducing a new aquarium fish to an established tank is to first acclimatize the fish to its new environment before releasing them into the water. If you dont do this, the shock to their system will surely kill them. The thing to do is immerse the bag of water containing your new aquarium fish, into your aquarium water. Let it stay there until the temperatures are equal and the fish have had the chance to look over their new environment. When a few hours have passed, release the fish slowly into the aquarium.

Ideally, a new tank can be set up for the new fish. This is so you could isolate them first and check them for diseases they may have. You wouldnt want any carry-over sickness to contaminate your aquarium.

Careful preparation to the aquarium, timing of the introduction of new fish, plus proper acclimatizing will ensure a smooth transition with minimal stress to all your aquarium fish.

When buying an aquarium tank, the first thing you have to consider is how many fish you want and what type of fish they are. This will determine the actual size of the tank that you need to buy. The fish you start with may grow to a size that will make your aquarium too small in the future. Be sure, therefore, that the aquarium you get now will be big enough to accommodate all your fish at their full adult size. You then avoid the additional expense and work involved in transferring everything from the smaller aquarium.

Some fish require larger tanks. To determine the proper tank size, follow this simple rule of thumb: for every fish that grows to less than 4 inches, you need one gallon of water for every inch of fish. For bigger fish like the cichlid, you will need at least 55 gallons of water and for the angelfish, 29 or more gallons of water. The bigger the tank, the bigger the capacity to house more fish. The more water in the tank, the more oxygen there will be for your fish.

Aquarium tanks come in many sizes, anywhere from two and a half gallons to several hundred gallons. They may be rectangular, bow-front, or hexagonal, or designed for a corner, among other shapes. Smaller tanks are a good choice for a first aquarium, because they generally have lower maintenance needs. Don't go too small, though, or your fish won't have enough room. For a first aquarium, consider a prepackaged kit containing everything you need to get started, like a filter, light, and heater.

Aquarium tanks can be found in both glass and acrylic styles. Those that are glass are less expensive and widely available. The glass will not scratch, but it is heavy. Glass aquariums come in limited shapes. Compared to glass, acrylic is lightweight. The acrylic material allows for a wider range of custom shapes and sizes. They are easier to scratch than glass aquariums, however, and are usually the more expensive option.

Once an aquarium is filled, it can get very heavy. It can weigh 10 pounds for every gallon of water. Be sure that the stand that you put it on is very sturdy and will not collapse under the heavy weight. There are stands, made of either wood or metal, which are specially built for heavy aquariums tanks. They even come equipped with compartments that will hold your aquarium supplies. Aside from the stand, you will also need to get a lid for the tank. Make sure that the lid, sometimes called the "hood" fits your tank properly.

There are many things to consider when selecting an aquarium tank. One of them is the size of the aquarium. To determine the ideal size for you, you have to know the kind of fish that you are putting in the aquarium and exactly how many of them. Also, try to find out how big your fish can grow. If you buy a fish without finding out its maximum growth size, you may someday find your aquarium tank too small or too crowded. Remember to choose the aquarium that will be big enough for all the fish at maximum growth size.

Although some fish species require larger tanks, there is a rule of thumb for determining appropriate tank size. For fish with an adult size of less than 4 inches, like tetras and guppies, allow one gallon of water for every inch of fish. For larger fish, water requirements can vary greatly between species, so do your research. A large cichlid requires a 55 gallon aquarium, and an angel fish needs 29 or more gallons, even though the adult sizes of these fish will never approach 55 or 29 inches.

Aquarium tanks come in many sizes, anywhere from two and a half gallons to several hundred gallons. They may be rectangular, bow-front, or hexagonal, or designed for a corner, among other shapes. Smaller tanks are a good choice for a first aquarium, because they generally have lower maintenance needs. Don't go too small, though, or your fish won't have enough room. For a first aquarium, consider a prepackaged kit containing everything you need to get started, like a filter, light, and heater.

Aquarium tanks can be found in both glass and acrylic styles. Those that are glass are less expensive and widely available. The glass will not scratch, but it is heavy. Glass aquariums come in limited shapes. Compared to glass, acrylic is lightweight. The acrylic material allows for a wider range of custom shapes and sizes. They are easier to scratch than glass aquariums, however, and are usually the more expensive option.

An aquarium weighs about 10 pounds for every gallon of water once it's filled. A large aquarium can be very heavy. Choose a stand that can support this weight; don't just place your large aquarium on a table or bookcase, because it could collapse under the weight. Specialized aquarium stands in metal or wood provide aquarium supply storage and an attractive, sturdy method for holding the tank. Besides the aquarium and a stand, you'll also need a lid for the tank. Sometimes this is referred to as a 'hood.' This is often purchased as a set with the aquarium itself so that you can be sure it is the appropriate size.

When you have chosen and purchased your aquarium tank, test it first before putting your fish in. Place it in a container, like your bathtub (or you can place it outside in your yard), and put water in it. Then add and plug in all your aquarium equipment like the filter and the heater. Let your test run for a day to check if all the equipment is functioning properly. Make sure also that your tank doesn't leak. If all goes well, transfer your fish to their new home carefully, and watch them live a long and healthy life in your safe aquarium tank.
