While most of us have learned to think of spring as peak allergy season, there are still many year round air quality concerns in our homes. As we approach the winter months, there are a few factors which may negatively affect the air in our homes even more so than in the summer months.

Science has known for a while that the air outside is generally several times better than than the air in the common home. By keeping our doors and windows shut tight all winter, we have created an environment perfect for trapping contaminants.

In order for our homes to stay well heated during the winter, it is important that they are sealed well, minimizing any possible areas where the heat may leak out. This fact means all the contaminants in our homes are trapped inside, being circulated and built up over time.

This time of year is for most people and their pets not a time to be outside. We spend more of our time indoors during the colder months than any other part of the year. This leaves us exposed to toxins and contaminants for longer than we might be in the spring or summer.

Considering how many people have pets and how many of those pet owners have allergies, the winter could become a real problem. Dander is the primary cause of allergic reactions around pets. When its cold, its us and our pets, locked inside.

A few sources of air contamination many might not think to consider are fireplaces, furnaces, and gas stove burners. The use of all three of these goes up during the winter months, contributing to the air harmful particles resulting from combustion.

Additionally, I'm sure we have all noticed that cool air is drier air and tends to dry out both human and pet skin. Because the main ingredient in household dust is dead skin cells, this time of year might leave your house collecting much more dead skin than in the warmer months.

One thing that could help with this problem is adding a humidifier or an air purifier with a humidifier option. This could help reduce the buildup of skin cells in the home and may reduce the spread of viruses through the air.

I hope this reminder has opened you up to the idea that there are constantly allergens and irritants trapped inside our homes. It is important for our daily quality of life and longevity to do our best to rid these contaminants from our homes that we spend so much time in.
