Ringworm in dogs is quite common. Lots of other animals, including the human animal are also susceptible to ringworm. It is extremely communicable and easily passes from pet to human or human to pet. Being aware of its symptoms and signs is very important when sharing your residence with animals.
One of the easiest ways to recognize ringworm in dogs is through missing patches of fur. Ringworm hardens the skin and fur follicles which causes the fur to break off at the base. The ringworm dog skin in the area of the infection will appear as a red raised circular rash. It may look kind of crusty or scaly, with the middle area appearing mostly normal.
You will almost certainly notice your dog scratching the spot given that the ringworm rash is really itchy. Scratching the rash will likely cause the rash to spread to other areas of the dog's body. If the dog comes into contact with furnishings the rash can easily spread to humans from this indirect contact.
If your dogs is showing signs of ringworm it is most likely time to take it to your local veterinarian. The vet will be able to take a sample of the skin and make a correct diagnosis. After the diagnosis is confirmed, which may take a number of days, the vet can then prescribe the correct remedy. There are various treatments available. None are complicated. But persistence in treatment is the key to victory. The gestation period between exposure and occurrence with ringworm is ten days. If you do not completely rid your dog or home or ringworm re-infestation can occur. You will need to stay on top of it and put in the work so it can be eliminated promptly. The initial step is to start treating your dog. Your vet might prescribe medicine, cream or shampoo. Usually the medication prescribed for your dog should be given on a every day basis. Creams as medication, although recommended for humans, by and large do not work on dogs as they tend to lick or rub them off. Anti-fungal shampoos are usually more effective in treating dogs and other animals. Anti-fungal shampoo is the most effective treatment for dogs due to its ability to cover the entire body with the anti-fungal medication. This helps destroy any existing ringworm fungus spores that might have not yet developed into a visible rash.
Along with the treatment of the dog itself, it is essential to treat your residence for ringworm. Wash your dog's bedcovers everyday with bleach and hot water. Avoid direct contact with your dog to avoid becoming contaminated yourself. If you have other dogs or cats living in your dwelling make sure that you treat them as well. The shampoo provided by your vet can be used to cleanse the dog's bedding. The one thing above all else you should do is stick to the treatment plan wholly to the end. Once the fungus is gone it may be a excellent idea to take your dog back to the vet for a follow up examination just to make sure the ringworm fungus is completely gone.
