When you think about natures pet food offerings, what do you think of? Perhaps you may envision a giraffe chewing leaves, or a rabbit nibbling in a garden, or a cow eating grass in a field. However, if you are the owner of a traditional home dwelling animal such as a dog or cat, have you considered what they may be eating? Is there a pet franchise out there who takes into account that many animal owners are looking to make sure that their beloved friends are well fed? There are some misconceptions out there about what is best when it is relative to the good health of your animal. Additionally, there are some misconceptions about what should be considered off limits too. Here are a few things to consider when it comes to the health and well being of your four legged friends.
1. Take it easy on the servings of "people food." For as long as families have lived with their animals, children have fed unwanted dinner scraps to the dog. Human food, though tasty to the animal should not be the basis for their healthy diet. Human food can be bad for the digestion of your dog and can be void of the vitamins and nutrients a dog so desperately needs.
2. Be stingy with the quantity and size of treats given. It can be tempting to give a number of daily treats to your animal. Particularly when using treats as reward for training it can be easy to overdue, but resist the temptation. Too many treats can lead to a dog gaining excessive weight. Overweight dogs often suffer for it when it comes to their long term health.
3. Get your dog plenty of daily exercise. The necessity of fitness cannot be stressed enough. Whether that be some time spent at the dog park, a long walk around the neighborhood, or fetching the ball in the back yard, a dog needs to move. Dog owners who are faithful to exercise their animal tend to be more fit themselves.
4. Choose food which is formulated just for your dog. Dog food is made on the basis of age, weight, size, and dietary restrictions. The creation of proper food is a science which is studied quite religiously.
5. Make sure to attend to hygiene needs for your dog. Proper maintenance of a coat, nails, and teeth are essential to the overall health of your dog.
6. Routine vet checks can proactively head off any potential health issues. Make sure to keep up with routine shots and schedule applications for things such as heartworm
It is so important to make the health and nutrition of your dog very seriously. Perhaps the best secrets to a long life and good health for your dog are proper nutrition, regular exercise, and good veterinary care. For those who dearly love their four legged friends, taking care of them is truly an honor and not a chore. Feeding your animal the proper food for growth and development, giving your dog exercise opportunities every day, and having access to medical precautions and care should give your dog many days of good health.
