When you interbreed a Shih Tzu and a Toy Poodle the result is the adorable hybrid dog Shih Poo. This dog is slowly becoming a household name but the kennel clubs still don't recognize it as an official breed. In view of this, no breed standard yet exists for this dog and that every temperament and appearance from this interbreeding is considered acceptable.

You can expect a Shih Poo to possess traits that are seen on both the Shih Tzu and Poodle although one parent breed's quality may come out dominant. Every Shih Poo is unique from each other in terms of appearance and temperament. However, they are all the same when it comes to being hypoallergenic and this quality is inherited from the Poodle.

The Shih Poo was developed in order to have a dog that is safe for sensitive people, at the same time, still little as a toy poodle and adorable as a Shih Tzu. No dog is completely hypoallergenic but comparing to other breeds, the Shih Poo without a doubt produces less dander and sheds very little. Being said, allergic people can enjoy this pet and may experience negligible or none allergic reactions at all.

Another advantage of interbreeding a Shih Tzu and Poodle is a healthier offspring. Shih Poos are found to have less genetic problems than the parent breeds and that this is more apparent with Shih Tzu- Poodle breeding than Shih Poo-Shih Poo intermixing. Moreover, the Shih Poo may live up to 14 up to 17 years.

There is no standard when it comes to coat colors of the Shih Poo but the common ones often seen with this hybrid are black and white, brown, grey, white and apricot. Generally, this hybrid weights from 10 to 15 lbs and stands 8 to 11 inches in height. Some Shih Poos have coats that are curly and short, and there are some that appear long and straight.

To keep this dog's hair beautiful and orderly, at least three times a week of brushing and combing are necessary because if not, the hair might become tangled, matted and dirty. Hair clipping must also be done at least once every two or three months. You will also notice that the Shih Poo's hair would hang over his eyes preventing him to see that's why it is good to tie it in a knot above the head.

Albeit being miniscule and delicate-looking, the Shih Poo is surprisingly quick and agile. Its little body is strong, solid and possesses boundless energy. Because of this, he must be let out to play and exercise everyday in forms of vigorous but light activities such as playing fetch.

Not only is this dog an infinitely energized creature but is also highly intelligent and extremely biddable. He learns quickly and most often picks up commands and tricks easily. Additionally, this dog is being loved for being happy, loving, sweet and playful and these are evident through its constant kissing of the master.
