When you are getting a chinchilla, the cage and its contents will be an important part of keeping your pet healthy and safe. A chinchilla can overheat very easily so it is important that the chinchilla cage not be in direct sunlight or a place that gets too warm.

Chinchillas like space. If the cage selected is tall and has a 24" x 24" floor, your pet will be comfortable. Remember that if you add toys and a wheel, you will need a larger floor space and more height. Your chinchilla cage needs to be made of wire. A chinchilla will nibble on everything and plastic, vinyl, and small parts are not healthy for this pet.

Put shelves and ladders in the cage for the chinchilla to climb on. This will be how they get most of their exercise and they like to climb. Be sure to put thin wood planks on floors and shelves, if they are made of wire, so that the feet of your pet will be protected.

Using wood shavings or newspaper to line the cage will help to keep it clean and allow your pet to nest. Adding a wooden nesting box that has newspaper in it will also be a good idea. Chinchillas like to have places that they can hide when they want. The best shavings to use for your pet will be made of aspen.

Bowls in the cage will not be effective for the chinchilla. If bowls are used, they need to be very heavy and cleaned on a daily basis. By using a glass bottle that has a chew guard and feed hopper that attaches to the cage you will be able to keep food and water clean for your pet.

Chinchillas need a pumice block to keep their teeth the right length. In the wild they chew on stones to keep their teeth ground down. You will need to give them a way to do this in their cage.

Find out why it's especially important to have a large chinchilla cage if you have two chinchillas, and things to be aware of when making your chinchilla cage plans.
