Guinea pigs are really social and need a steady flow of attention. In today's busy world, you might find it difficult to give your pet Guinea Pig everything it needs to stay healthy in terms of attention. Children especially can fall short of handling their guinea pigs enough if they have busy little lives...as many children do these days. A good fix for that is to get two guinea pigs that can keep each other company. However, be extra sure that both of your guinea pigs of choice are the same sex or you might have a whole litter of these cutie patooties.

Guinea pigs live about 5 to 7 years, so consider this a long term commitment. That's a good thing as well, as it can teach your children how to be responsible for the long term. In addition guinea pigs give unconditional love, and all children need that as they are growing up and enduring school. Just be sure that as the parent, you also check in on these pets to be sure they are getting everything they need.

Guinea pigs need lots of room in their cage. Most cages sold in the pet stores are much too small for a healthy guinea pig. It's okay to build your own guinea pig cage as these pets don't try to escape their home! Just make sure the floor is smooth as their feet can be a little tender. Making your own cage can make for a much nicer guinea pig home and less expensive as well.
