Walking your dog should be a fun experience for both of you. Walking an uncontrolled dog can pull you off balance and be a strain on your arms and back. A dog harness is a humane way to keep dogs of any size under control and safe while walking.
Buying a harness for your dog is quite simple. Measure your dog around his chest right behind the front legs. Measure around the dog's neck. Use these measurements to help you select the right size for your dog.
It is better to get one that is a little larger and adjust it down to fit, than to get one that is too small. If you have a growing puppy, make sure it can grow with your dog. You may need several during your puppy's growth cycle.
To make sure the harness fits correctly, make sure you can slide your fingers comfortably between the dog's skin and the webbing. It shouldn't be so loose that it slides around too easily. A comfortable fit will be tight enough, but not too tight.
When you introduce the harness to your dog, do so calmly. Help the dog associate it with pleasure. After you put it on, give your dog a treat as a reward.
Using a harness keeps your dog safe. It is much harder for a dog to wriggle out of than a collar. This prevents your pet from running loose and possibly being hit by a car.
Training is simple. Since the pressure is spread out over the dog's rib cage instead of the neck, the dog will be more comfortable and cooperative. If your dog starts to pull, simply stop in your tracks until he stops.
Be consistent in your training. Let your dog know you are in control during walks. It won't take long for your daily walks to be a pleasure for both you and your dog.
