Pet Ferret Care – Ensuring The Safety Of Your Pet Ferret

Add comments

Congratulations on choosing a pet ferret to care for. It is a wonderful pet to have and will be immensely rewarding. You are probably used to hearing the responsibility speech that goes alongside owning a pet, and you are already doing your part by learning, so I'll spare you.

You need to check your pet ferret's medical history when you first get it. Ensure it has all of the necessary vaccinations and so forth. If you've gotten a kit, this will normally include a series of distemper shots and a rabies shot.

Your pet ferret will get into everything, so by minimizing what is available to them, they can't take you by surprise as easily. If you can, set up one room in the mentality of asking yourself not whether the items therein could hurt, but whether they're needed. If not, try to take the items out.

Before you let your pet ferret roam, also keep in mind that they have flexible skeletons and are known as brilliant escape artists.

I wrote the prior sentence presupposing that you are going to let them out of their cage rather often because they need play and exercise to remain happy and healthy. Sometimes a ferret owner will walk their fuzzy pet. A ferret harness is necessary should you want to try. It takes a little while to get them used to it, but they'll love getting out.

You want to feed your pet ferret a very specific diet. Table scraps are not an option. Their digestive systems can not process fiber. They do not do very well with large amounts of carbohydrates either, their diet should consist mostly of fat and protein. Online is the easiest place to find some specialty ferret food that hits all of these marks.

Aim to spend at least 30 minutes per day playing with your ferret, and always keep an eye out for details and changes in behavior. The sooner you notice any changes and get them checked out, the safer your pet will be. Overall, if you watch out for your pet ferret it will have a long, happy life.
