As the market for parrots as pets grows, so does the number of abandoned parrots. Many parrot owners do not understand the commitment required in owning a parrot. They become easily frustrated, and ultimately choose to give up. Parrot rescue shelters and pet stores are full of parrots waiting for homes. However, if making the decision to choose a parrot companion from a shelter or store instead of from a breeder becomes a real possibility, owners must be aware of some behavioral problems that shelter or store parrots may have accumulated.

Many parrots have the behavioral problem of biting or chewing. Instinctively, parrots use their beaks as a way of expressing and protecting themselves. Biting or chewing is also a way of learning about the world around them. If parrot owners want to maximize the discouragement of biting and chewing, the solution is simple: provide the parrot with chewing toys and entertaining food variety. Providing parrots with large chunks of a variety of fruits and vegetables, cuttlebones and mineral blocks, or chew trees and toys will not only assist with their well-balanced, nutritional needs, but will also aid to lower their need to bite and chew things owners don't want them to.

Most varieties of parrots are vocal birds. The next problem arises when parrot's screeching and screaming becomes excessive. The solution to this problem is training a parrot to mimic their owners voice or other sounds. This will require time, patience, and dedication, but will ultimately be better for both the parrot and owner. Certain parrot varieties will be easier to train than others, but by providing a parrot with an alternative to screeching whether with vocal training or toys, owners will see a lessening in screeching issues.

Parrots are known for their ability to sing, mimic and talk. However, if not given the time, love, and attention needed to train them, parrots will develop the problem of screeching or screaming as a means to express themselves and communicate. Solving this problem is simple: train the parrots to speak. In reality, however, the solution may be much more challenging. The species, background, and personality of the parrot will all play an important part in the degrees of difficulty associated with speech training. Regardless of those factors, the solution requires a patient and dedicated owner.

Parrots are intelligent and sensitive creatures. They require an enormous amount of understanding and attention. Behavioral problems will occur throughout the course of a parrot's long life. The solutions may be challenging, even frustrating at times. However, with patience, love, and routine, owners can remedy the previously and newly accumulated problems. Over time, owners may even find that their newly trained, loving parrot pal is the solution to many of their problems, as well!
