When pet owners attempt pet grooming at home, there are a few normal mistakes that are made. Pet grooming is a skill, and you need to be careful. If you are clumsy with the clippers, it can result in injury to your pet. This isn't just physical trauma, but emotional. Trust is lost once you inflict pain and your pet may have a different attitude towards you subsequently.

The most normal error is using the clippers too near to the skin. The shears can leave a serious cut that might provide a breeding ground to subsequent infections. If the skin is damaged accidentally when grooming, quit at once and treat the wound. Put on some antibacterial ointment and clean the injury if possible. Hug your pet to let it know that you are sorry and it was a mistake. Routinely inspect the cut and if it gets red or oozes pus, contact your veterinarian right away. If the animal washes or otherwise irritates the injury, you might want to buy a special plastic collar to put a stop to this behavior.

A further error in novice pet grooming is getting shampoo or other chemicals in your pet's eye. Shampoo can splatter, either from your mistake or from the animal's head movements. This inadvertent act will cause your animal's eyes to sting and create an uncomfortable pet grooming experience. Wash the soap out with water or saline solution and daub the corners of the eye with a clean cloth.

One potentially lethal error in pet grooming is leaving your animal unrestrained or loose during grooming, particularly if you're outside. Some pets, particularly cats, can't stand baths and will dart away at any chance. Your cat or dog can put itself in hazardous situations by attempting to get away from the grooming activity. It might run out into the road and be hit by an automobile or be the victim of a stray animal. Be sure your pet is at least on a leash. You might even want to place a muzzle on your pet to protect both of you.

Grooming your pet yourself may create a successful experience that will be cheaper than an expert pet groomer. Bonding with your pet during this time is an added advantage to grooming your pet yourself. It can be worthwhile for both of you if the correct safety tips are followed and you feel comfortable in the undertaking.

When it comes to keeping your pet happy and healthy there is nothing more important than proper pets grooming. Whether you take your pet to a professional groomer or do the job yourself using the appropriate dog or cat grooming tools, you are demonstrating your love and affection for your pet.
