Speedy Leash Training For Your New Dog

Add comments

One of the great pleasures of owning a dog is being able to go for a walk. A dog that is well leash trained makes a walk relaxing and pleasurable but if your dog is not leash trained that same walk becomes an exercise in frustration and it can even be dangerous.

Begin training your puppy for leash training when he is very young. The younger he is the more success you will have. The first thing to do is get him used to wearing a collar. He will likely fight it at first so make sure that you make him wear it even if he starts whining. Be sure to remove the collar when you crate him though so you can avoid any mishaps.

After your puppy has grown used to the collar you can start getting him used to the leash. Attach it to the collar and just allow him to drag it around the house. Make sure that you are there to supervise him as he could cause some chaos if the leash gets tangled with anything. Pretty soon you can take the leash and practice walking around in the house with him. It may seem odd to walk your puppy around in the house but you will have success earlier if you start out in a place where he is comfortable and as far as that goes there is no place like home.

When he gets comfortable with the leash in the house you can take him out in your yard. He should still be comfortable but he will have a few more distractions. When you are walking him make sure that you discourage any bad behavior and encourage the better behaviors.

If you puppy is pulling at the leash, just stop walking. Stand still. He may still pull for awhile but if you stop every time he pulls he will soon learn not to do that. Make sure that you are speaking with him and giving him commands, this is a good time for communication.

Another technique you can use when your dog is pulling is to turn and immediately walk the other direction. He will be confused but if you do it every time he will soon learn that pulling is something that you will not put up with. Repeat these techniques until he completely stops pulling on the leash.

Sometimes your puppy will stop himself. If he stops and won't go along on the walk you can use treats as encouragement. Don't call him to you but rather drop the treat by your feet and make him come to it. It may take a few times but soon he will be walking with you instead of sitting behind.

It doesn't take very long to properly leash train a puppy and it is really nice when they walk obediently beside you with a slack leash. This is the behavior you want to reinforce so make sure that he gets ample praise and attention when he starts doing this well. Stop all bad behavior early on and you will soon be enjoying walks with your dog for a long time to come.
