There are a few steps that need to be taken in order to begin training your cat to use the toilet in the bathroom using a toilet trainer. It is pretty easy to use a cat toilet seat. A cat may not be too keen on the idea of using the toilet trainer in the beginning, so you wil need to be very patient with the cat's independence.
The first step to using a cat toilet seat is to move the litter box into the bathroom. If it is already in the bathroom, then you are one step ahead. If you have two bathrooms, you may want to use the bathroom that gets the least amount of traffic. This will allow the cat more freedom and comfort. Many cats will not use the bathroom when there are people watching. They may end up going in a corner or under a bed if they are not comfortable in the bathroom.
The next step is to make sure that the litter box is put at a height that is as high as the toilet. If you are certain that the litter box will stay as the cat uses it, you can put the litter box right on the toilet. In the bathroom that the cat will be using, you can get a sturdy table that is almost the same height as the toilet, and put the cat's litter box on that. In this way, your cat will be used to having to jump to get to the litter box.
After this is done, you need to get a cat toilet trainer or cat toilet seat. Most of the time, this is just a plastic pan that is shallow, that goes under the toilet seat. In this pan, cat litter needs to be put in. Then, when your cat uses the bathroom, it will be in the pan. There are parts of the cat toilet trainer that come out. Pieces of the trainer can be removed, as the cat gets used to the cat toilet trainer. The parts are removed from the middle out, until the kitty is no longer using the pan, instead he is using the toilet.
