How To Raise A Kitten

It is a good idea to learn how to raise a kitten, before you actually bring your new kitten home. This way you are well prepared and have a better understanding of what is required and what to expect.

Most kittens are between 6 and 8 weeks when you bring them home, which is a good age to start a new life. At this age they are fully weaned, eating proper food and have learnt the basics of clean habits. Kittens that are very young may not thrive properly.

Check that your kitten has received the necessary vaccinations, and find out in advance what local government regulations apply where you live. Take the kitten to your vet as soon as possible to be cleared of any health problems. Ask the vet's advice about spaying and ongoing health needs, like worming and vaccinations.

You will need to be prepared with some important items, like an easy-to-clean litter tray and a bag of litter, bowls for food and water, kitten's food, a bed and a few of toys. Cats are naturally clean animals, and will use the litter tray as long as it has clean litter in it; so show it where the litter tray is and there shouldn't be too many messes. Replace the litter and wash the tray regularly, as cats won't use dirty litter. Keep the litter tray in a quiet corner.

Continue feeding the food the kitten is used to for a few weeks to help prevent stomach upsets which are sometimes caused by changing the diet suddenly. This also reduces the number of major changes happening to the kitten and helps it settle better. Be sure to feed at regular times, and let the kitten eat in peace, without interruption. Fresh water must be available all the time. Wash the food and water dishes every day.

The type of bedding you provide for your kitten will depend on your budget and your preference. A cat really appreciates a cat basket, but a soft blanket or a couple of towels will do just as well. Show the kitten its bed and it will soon know to use it. Remember the kitten is a baby and needs lots of sleep in the first weeks in its new home.

You need to provide toys for your kitten for activity and to prevent boredom. Kittens love to play and without toys may well decide to play with something inappropriate. Make sure you have several play sessions with your kitten each day; this creates a bond between you. While there is a huge range of cat toys available, a ball of paper or a stuffed sock is just as much fun for the kitten.

A new kitten will generally settle quickly into their new home. Some discipline may be necessary if your kitten decides to sharpen its claws on the furniture or climb your curtains, but a firm "no" should be enough. Invest in a cat scratching post; claw sharpening is a cat's natural instinct.

When you know how to raise a kitten properly, you will enjoy the company and fun that living with a cat represents.
