What You Should Feed a Red Eared Slider

Almost all pet turtles, red eared slider breed among them, are herbivorous and are able to survive on vegetables including lettuce, carrots, cabbage or fruits such as berries. They can also eat live insects such as beetles, spiders or crickets or live earthworms. Commercial turtle food is also available if you feel that your turtle may not be getting all of its nutritional needs. Your turtle's age will determine in part their diet and how often they eat.

As your red eared slider gets older, its diet will change. As your turtle matures, it will tend to eat more vegetation and may not eat any meat at all. Younger turtles tend to ear a wider range of foods, including more insects.

Building The Right Habitat for Turtles - Red Eared Slider

For all turtles, red eared slider type included, it is important to have the proper habitat. Your turtle's size will determine the size of your tank. There should be approximately ten gallons of water for every inch of your turtle's length. For example, if you have an eight inch turtle, you should have an eighty gallon tank. This is something to remember before you buy your turtle. In addition, you should be sure that you not only have enough water but that it is clean and pure.

Lighting is another important factor. Turtles need sunlight for proper bone growth and vitamin synthesis. If your turtle doesn't get natural sunlight, buy a fluorescent light or other specially designed light for reptiles. Finally, keep out things that could harm the turtle if they eat it, as things like woods chips or other organic materials can be dangerous to your turtle's health.

For turtles, red eared slider breed and others, it is important to keep their tank at the right temperature. You should try to make sure your turtle stays warm. Outdoor turtles will often hibernate in the wintertime, but if your turtle is an indoor turtle you should be sure that you do not expose it to extremely cold temperatures. Indoor turtles should be housed at about 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. At night you can lower the temperature from five to ten degrees.
