Without the Fox Terrier, fox hunting has been not only difficult but almost impossible for hunters, especially when these targets start to run back to their dens. The most trusted hunting companions then were the Fox Hounds but even they could not surpass the dark and narrow burrows of the foxes. So with this problem, the Fox Terrier breed had been developed and it proved to be the perfect answer to this fox hunting dilemma.
The Fox Terrier breed is very popular as superb and fearless fox chaser. With its small body, ferocious power and brave spirit, it is able to chase down foxes. Using these intrinsic abilities, the Fox Terrier was able to crawl down to the Fox's burrow and fight there one on one until the prey gives up.
During the late 19th century, Fox Terrier was used to refer to a group of dogs that were bred for hunting. Today, the name Fox Terrier means a breed that represents two varieties called the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. In Australia, however, in order to avoid confusion, they use the name Standard Fox Terrier to refer to variety of the breed.
The pedigree does not end with the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers, however, because since the introduction of this breed as a superb fox hunter, many variations have been developed in different parts of the world. Today, breeds such as the Japanese Terrier, Chilean Fox Terrier, Tenterfield Terrier and Brazilian Terrier are among the offset of this breed. Moreover, smaller versions of the Fox Terrier have also been developed and these are the Miniature Fox Terrier and Toy Fox Terrier.
The Fox Terriers are well-known to be quiet yet possess rather admirable qualities. They are called the jumpy dogs because they love to jump on surfaces and in to people's arms because they have a liking for being carried around and hugged. They are known to be hardheaded but they are also gentle and sociable to other dog breeds and other animals.
They are also highly active, loving, and chirpy. They are fearless and highly biddable and they can learn tricks very fast. At a glance, they manifest an elegant, stylish, and intelligent personality.
The Wire Fox Terrier have a dense, broken to the touch, and wiry coat while the Smooth Fox Terrier has a smooth, dense, hard and flat coat. Except for their differently textured coats, these Fox Terrier varieties are almost the same in everything. Additionally, aside from being excellent fox hunters, they also have strong jaws, well-formed teeth, great strength and fearless spirit.
Normally, this breed weighs 13 to 20 pounds and stands 13 to 16 inches in height. Coat colors often appear in tan, black and tan, black and white, and all of these may have white markings. Foiler was the first Fox Terrier to be listed in a kennel club in the year 1875.
