One Guinea Pig, Two Guinea Pig, Three Guinea Pig, More

Notice how people always keep more than one guinea pig if they have these at home. And if you are buying one, It is always strongly encouraged that you get a partner or a group of guinea pigs.

Not only are guinea pigs extremely social creatures, they love the company of others. They can get lonely by themselves, and their health will suffer if left alone.

Thus, having one guinea pig is not such a good idea, especially if you can't keep him company in the cage 24/7 (which of course, is not possible!). Thus, the most viable option is give your guinea pig a partner.

Let's Talk About Sex

Should you get two women, two men, one of each, or three men, or three women, or three... oh my! Can you just imagine all of the combinations you can think of when you get up to higher numbers?

Obviously, this wouldn't be a problem if you just have one. Ultimately, the girls act like ladies, who like to leisurely laze inside their cages while the boys are sprightly and energetic.

There is a myth that a pair of males will kill each other in one cage. There is not truth to this.

But with guinea pigs, this is a workable situation, as long as the cage is big enough for them to establish their own turf.

If you have two male guinea pigs, you cannot introduce a female guinea pig to the cage. The males will fight for dominance (And therefore the female), and the loser would have to be removed from the cage immediately. If he's left there, he will starve to death as the dominate male will keep him away from both the food and water.

It is a good idea to get two female guinea pigs, as they will not cause any serious harm to each other. Just the typical girly-fights.

The best idea however, is to have a female and a male together. Since guinea pigs take on their traditional gender roles, there will be no conflicts here.

In fact, this union will be so harmonious that you have to get ready to have more guinea pigs in your home.

The girls will carry their babies for two months, after their female cycle of eighteen days. Be prepared for lots of babies as guinea pigs are known to have lots of offspring.

Peace and Order

Many pet stores will have at least one cage of guinea pigs, if not two or more. It's simply that guinea pigs give birth a lot, and there is a demand for the puppies they produce.

You might get so excited that you will want to get one pig from each cage you see. Don't do this unless you want to have a chaotic and fighting bunch. To keep the peace and order, get pigs from the same cage.
